.Net Framework 1.0, SQL Ce 2.0 And Windows Mobile 5.0 Work Together?
May 4, 2006
Hi,
Does anyone know if I have created a replication using SQL Server 2000 (sp3a), .Netframework 1.0 with Pocket pc Sql Server CE 2.0 will work or not in pocket pc windows mobile 5.0 environment (with the .netframework for pocket pc(netcf.core.ppc3.arm.cab) and sql ce file (sqlce.ppc3.arm.CAB) installed in pocket pc)?
I have it working in pocket pc Windows mobile 2003 version. But, after I tried to install the exact same cab files and system into Windows mobile 5.0, the replication fail.
Anyone has any idea?

Dear ppl,
I am writing an application for a device (MDA Pro T-Mobile) having Windows Mobile 5.0 using
-MS .NET Compact Framework 2.0 SP-1
-SQL Mobile 2005.
-VS 2005 .NET
The application uses Merge Replication. The error occurs in the Synchronise() Method of the SqlCeReplication object.
"SQL Server Mobile encountered problems when opening the database."
repl.AddSubscription(AddOption.CreateDatabase);
repl.Synchronize();
I don't understand why I am having this error. It does create the database on AddSubscription() method but it is failing opening the database on Synchronise(). I have also tried uninstalling and then reinstalling all the SQL Mobile components in the following order.
-sqlce30.wce5.armv4i.cab
-sqlce30.repl.wce5.armv4i.cab
-sqlce30.dev.ENU.wce5.armv4i.cab
However, when i run this application on a device(Dell X50 AXIM) with Pocket PC 2003, it runs fine creating the database and sysnchronising it.
The target platform for the project is Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC SDK.
Does any one have any clue what could be the problem ?
Regards
Nabeel

Hello,
I am developping a non-managed C++ application for PocketPC using a SQL Server mobile database.
The application is compiled for PocketPC 2003 and uses SQL Server Mobile v2. I use Visual Studio 2005. But I need to compile the application for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. So I installed the WM5 SDK and had the WM5 into my project configuration.
The "ssceoledb.h" which I include incluses the "transact.h" file. But my problem is that this file is only provided with the PocketPC 2003 SDK and not in the WM5 SDK.
So I cannot use the WM5 configuration project with SQL Server. I also tried with the last SQL Server Mobile 2005 (ie v3.0) and the "ssceoledb30.h" also includes "transact.h".
Did I miss something to install ?
Do you know how I can resolve the problem ?
By advance, thank you for any answer.

Using MS VS 2005 (incl SQL Server Mobile)
MS Pocket PC 2005 SDK
I am working on a project that builds for Pocket PC on both Mobile 2003 and Mobile 5. The project uses/will use SQL Server Mobile to store local data.
Project created from new with support for both platforms. I include required header files ssceerr30.h and ssceoledb30.h.
Project builds fine in WM2003 configuration, release and debug.
When I build for WM5 the compiler cannot find the header file transact.h. This is included from within ssceoledb30.h. Same as under WM2003.
In WM2003 configuration if I highlight the ssceoledb30.h include in Visual Studio and open the header, it takes me to <Visual Studio dir>SmartDevicesSDKSQL ServerMobilev3.0. I then locate the include for transact.h and do the same, which takes me <Visual Studio dir>SDKPocketPC2003include. The file exists.
If I repeat the above 'browsing' under the WM5 configuration, ssceoledb30.h takes me to a different copy in the WM5 SDK directory. There is no diff between the file here and the other copy used by WM2003. If I attempt to open transact.h - file does not exist.
Fix (which I'm not too sure about, i.e. is it OK?) - If I copy transact.h to the WM5 SDK directory, the project builds.
Why has transact.h disappeared from WM5 SDK?
I can find no ref's to this problem anywhere. Is my installation of the WM5 SDK corrupt? What else could I be missing?
Is there a sample for SQL Server mobile (like the NorthwindOLEDB sample) that comes configured to build for WM5?

Long story short -
Have two C# applications - one WinForms desktop app, the other a WinForms smart device app. Both use SQL Server Compact CE 3.5 to store data locally. Both work just fine.
Now the desktop app needs to open and update the .SDF file that is stored on the Windows Mobile device. (Device will be docked via USB.)
What format would the path to the .SDF look like that the WinForms application would need to specify in order to open it?
Thanks for reading.

Is there another version of SQL Server that works with .NET Framework 3.0 and runs under Vista Ultimate?

I wanted to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, instead of installing .Net Framework 2.0, I installed .Net Framework 3.5. When I tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition I received the following error:
SQL_ERROR (-1) in OdbcStatement::execute_batch
sqlstate=42000, level=16, state=2, native_error=7404, msg=[Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]The server could not load DCOM.
Error Code: 0x80071cec (7404)
Windows Error Text: Source File Name: libodbc_statement.h
Compiler Timestamp: Wed Jun 14 16:28:15 2006
Function Name: OdbcStatement::execute_batch@sysdbupg.sql@56
Source Line Number: 91
I then decided maybe I do need .net framework 2.0, but when I try to install it it says it's already included with the OS.
But the "Programs and Featuers" only list .Net Framework 1.1 and .Net Framework 1,1 Hotfix (KB92979).
I uninstalled .Net Framework 3.5 and tried to install .Net Framework 2.0 again, but it still says it's included in the OS.
After uninstalling .Net Framework 3.5, I tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, but still received the above error message.
Is .Net Framework 2.0 included with Windows Vista Home Edition?
If it is, any ideas in solving the Server 2005 Express Edition installation error?
Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm trying to programmatically create a new table that is a copy of another. The SQL statement I'm making is:
"SELECT * INTO sensor_stream_temp FROM sensor_stream"
and various combinations thereof (such as specifying the columns, etc)
The error I keep getting is:
There was an error parsing the query. [Token line number 1, Token line offset 10, , Token in error = INTO ]
Is it not possible to copy a table using this statement? *sigh*
Thanks in advance for any help.

Dear All:
Is there a tutorial for WM5.0 to connect to SQL CE 3.0 using Ole DB using the headers:
#include "ca_merge30.h"
#include "ssceoledb30.h"
#include "ssceerr30.h"
The example Northwind at "Sql Mobile 5.0" doesn't works with WM5.0 SDK, due to imcompatibility issues. It works with the WM2003 sdk, but i'm programming in native c++ for WM5 devices.
I'm using the header from SQL Everywhere.
Thanks.

Can an application developed in VS 2005 with the .NET Compact Framework 2, and the windows mobile 5 sdk run on a windows mobile 6 device?
I am having a problem with creating a merge subscription on the windows mobile 6 device. After all parameters are entered, i click on the routine to build the db and then subscribe to the server database publication and the device keeps throwing invalid cast exception, then drops out of the program. I have a try catch in the routine for the invalidcastexception but it still seems to be fatal. The catch block notification code does not show any exception details.
The program runs fine when connected to a populated test database.
I have triple checked all the parameters that are entered to create the subscription, and tested connectivity to sqlcesa30.dll.
Thanks for your consideration.

Hi
My application :
On PC : Access application + Access DB
On PocketPC : Embedded Visual Basic 3.0 application + PocketAccess DB
I synchronise my DBs through ActivSync.
It runs good before Windows Mobile 5.
My customers asked me for new PocketPC with this application, so I bought some new PocketPCs : but as I see, syncronisation with Access is no more supported.
So what are my solutions ?
My customer wait for there PocketPC, so I need a quick solution, I don't want to rewrite all my application now.
My application run before WM5, so now I don't want to have to pay for a Visual Studio .Net, some SQL Server, etc ....
Please, what are the solutions that won't cost me more than the time that have already lost with this new Windows Mobile 5 ?

I am storing information in the executable directory and need to interact with it.
In Windows XP/Vista you can use Application.StartupPath to obtain current location and then add your folder/file name on the end of the string to interact with the file. How in the world do you do it in Mobile?

Hi there, i am building a mobile app using vs 2008, the app has about 8 - 12 forms that collect data.. i am thinking of
i am trying to decide how i want to save the temporary work data while the user fills the data collection forms.
when the user selects to create a new report, i will
create a new xml file...
as user moves from form to form, i will update the file
when the user has finished filling up all the data i will create a transaction and insert the data into the sql ce database and delete the file...
i will be using sql ce 3.5
i think it supports transactions
i think it also supports identity.... i am using sql management studio 2005 standalone , so i cannot visually modify the 3.5 sdf.,..,. is there a tool for 2008 that will let me visually modify the table(s)? i dont want to use the 2008 feb community edition...
is there a better way to do this? should i skip the xml and go directly into sql ce insert (for the first record creation) and updates? i think this will be a performance killer on a win mob devilce (5.0)
p.s. i cannot store data in a class, and then commit the class to the transaction because if the application crashes i will loose class data, so xml file will be needed.,
suggestions?

I've read that microsoft.applicationblocks.data for .net v2 can't be deployed to a mobile app, and my experience bears that out. So I 'm wondering if there are application blocks for windows mobile 5 that would know how to both talk to sql server mobile and sql server 2005. I see OpenNetCF has a port but as far as I can tell, they only address sql server mobile and not talking to a sql server 2005 remote database. I can use the OpenNetCF version for my sql server mobile requirements, but I'm hoping there is an encapsulation of sqlclient calls for communication with my server db.
thanks

Hi,
I developed a mobile application (CF 2.0) that uses merge replication to synchronize data between SQL Server Mobile and SQL Server 2000 SP4. The application uses asynchronous synchronization (BeginSynchronize method) to initiate the replication and update the user about the progress. The application worked perfectly on PPC2003 and Windows CE .Net 4.2 platformes.
The problem started when I moved it to WM5 platform. We're using Symbol MC70 devices.
When I start the replication for the first time it synchronizes without a problem. If I perform additional synchronizations(updates) it synchronizes without a problem. If I exit the application and start it again the sync process hangs when I try to synchronize it(to deliver updates).
Any ideas?
Thank you

Dear ppl,
I have a windows mobile 5.0 application that syncronises with SQL Sever 2005 (Merge Replication). The replication works fine without SSL. But when using SSL it doesn't work .On the device i get an error
28037, A request to send data to the computer running IIS has failed.
I have created a a Wild Card Certificate (*.domain-name.net) using Microsoft Certificate Services (Stand Alone) and setup the replication website with replication virtual directory under it , in IIS, to use this certificate. The host header for the replication site is set to "sql.domain-name.net". I have binded the host headers to the port as well.
I can access the https://sql.domain-name.net/replication/sqlcesa30.dll from remote computer and device and it says Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition Server Agent, that means it is setup correctly.
I have installed the certificate authority and its wild card certificate on the device Root Certificates. Now when I call repl.syncrhonise() from device .. it throws exception with error 28037, A request to send data to the computer running IIS has failed.
which i think means, it can't find the service url.
I am not sure what is the problem..something to do with Trust - SSL certificates... Is there any thing i am missing ?
Awaiting,

Can't get winmobile 5 to connect to my sql server 2005 (using vs2005). Here's the connect string:
"Data Source=tcp:XXXXXXdefault,1433;Database=YYYYYY;" _

This very same string, and variations of it, work in a vs2005 winforms app, but not a windows mobile 5. I'm (obviously) using system.data.sqlclient. MS documentation says it's supported on both platforms with no syntax changes. Any suggestions?

Hi ,
I am trynig to insert an image from the Windows mobile to the SQL database.
Is it possible to perform this using RDA ?
After some search in this forum , I got an impression that the only way to do this by storing the image in a local database and then do a merge replication.
I do not want to do the merge replcation just fo rthis reason.
Is it possible in RDA?
Debugging shows only some part of the data is getting updated.
While trying to retrieve the image in a webpage error is poping up.
My code is :
string strbytes = (Convert.ToBase64String(bytes)).ToString();
DbObj.GetSubmitSql("Update Odrs set SignedBy ='" + txtSign.Text + "', Signature = Convert(Image,'" + bytes + "') where OrderId=" + orderNo + "");

I am now writing application to connect SQL Server Express in Windows Mobile 5.0.
While running the code, I got error "PlatformNotSupportedException". I realized that it is a problem on different locale on the PDA and the SQL Server. So I tried to re-install the SQL Server for another collation, which is Latin1_General_CI_AI. I have also set the collation to Latin1_General_CI_AI at database-level.
Unfortunately, in the Visual Studio Debugger, I found that the error message is
mscorlib.dll!System.Globalization.CultureInfo.CultureInfo(int culture = 3076, bool useUserOverride = true) + 0xc8 bytes
where the 3076 means Chinese (Hong Kong SAR, PRC) locale from MSDN.
Seems to me that I cannot really change the collation in this Express Edition.
How can I solve it?
Thanks

I've been trying to create an installer for a little .NET CF 3.5 app I've written for Windows Mobile. It uses SQL Server Compact 3.5.
I've got the .NET CF and my program to deploy on the device using ini files and ceappmgr.exe, but when I try to do the same for SQLCE 3.5, it doesn't work (more on this in a sec).
I need my installer to install across lots of different CPU architectures, so I created an ceappmgr INI file that includes all the different cabs for the different CPU architectures.
I'm trying to test the installer by making it install on my smartphone (ARM CPU). The problem is, when I install it I get an error message on the device "The installation file is not intended for this device.". I reckon this means ceappmgr is picking the wrong cab file and trying to make my phone install it!
I did a bit of testing and found out if I remove all the cabs from my ceappmgr INI file EXCEPT for the one that is appropriate for my smartphone, then it works fine! But as soon as I include a cab file that is not appropriate for my device (eg a different cpu architecture, or the ARM PPC cab file), it stops working and I get that "not intended for this device" message.
My INI file looks like this:
[CEAppManager]
Version = 1.0
Component = SQL Server Compact 3.5
[SQL Server Compact 3.5]
Description = Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5
CabFiles = sqlce.phone.wce5.armv4i.CAB,sqlce.wce5.armv4i.CAB,sqlce.ppc.wce5.armv4i.CAB,sqlce.wce5.mipsii.CAB,sqlce.wce5.mipsii_fp.CAB,sqlce.wce5.mipsiv.CAB,sqlce.wce5.mipsiv_fp.CAB,sqlce.wce5.sh4.CAB,sqlce.wce5.x86.CAB
Any idea why ceappmgr would be (seemingly) picking the wrong cab file and trying to make my device install it?
Btw, my smartphone uses the "sqlce.phone.wce5.armv4i.CAB" cab file.
Cheers in advance.

We have setup a 32-bit IIS server on a 32-bit machine. Installed necessary SQL Server components (32-bit replication components). We have installed SQL Server 2005 64-bit SP1 with latest hotfixes on a 64-bit machine.
On the Mobile device we installed SQL Server 2005 Mobile.
When we start mergereplication the problem we have is error 28009 (An instance of the SQL Server Reconciler cannot be created) on the mobile device. I read allot about it, but still have a questetion.
Should this work?
I found the doc: SQL Server 2005 Upgrade Technical Resource Guide:
Note: If your upgrade involves SQL Server CE subscribers, you must perform additional actions on the IIS server. You will need to install SQL Server 2005 client connectivity components along with SQL Server Mobile Edition components on the IIS server. You will also have to replace sqlcesa30.dlll, sqlcerp30.dll, and all the replication components on the IIS server.
From this I conclude it should work or is the doc in error?
If it does not, what can we do?
32-bit SQL Server 2005 on the 64-bit machine should work. (Can a 64-bit SQL Server 2005 run alongside 32-bit SQL Server 2005?).
Beste regards,
Hans Mank
