[TCP/IP Sockets] ConnectionRead (recv()) Error
Aug 9, 2001
Has anyone encountered this error and found a solution?
A batch process received this error for the first time last night.
We are running SQL 7 on an NT4 server, and the client machine is a Win2K box.
The process is a VB application, using ADO to connect to the database.
We are using TCP/IP protocol.
We were using the Named Pipes protocol in the past, but changed to TCP/IP a few weeks ago, because we kept getting a "ConnectionWrite(GetOverLappedResults)" error, and found information that stated the error was due to the Named Pipes protocol, and the solution was to switch to TCP/IP.
FYI, since switching protocols we have not seen the ConnectionWrite(GetOverLappedResults) error, and we used to get it everytime the process ran.
Any help or suggestions are appreciated.
If any further information about our systems or the process would help, let mw know and I will provide it.
Thanks.

I keep getting this error while I run my application. I used to run the application but it was taking to long so I decided to add some stored procedures to it and this error started happening.
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionRead (recv()).
Does anyone know what this error is referring to?

Hello together,
since over a week I've been looking to
find out the reason for two error messages I get from our users and
servers, unfortunately without success up to now.
I really hope you can help me.
We are using Win 2k servers with active directory and SQL Server 2000,
clients are all Win XP with SP2. Versions of access are 2002 &
2003. The errors are userspecific and occur in both versions. The
SQL-Servers are accessed with an adp-file in 2002-format.
We have one usergroup which is member of specially many groups. This
affects the size of their windows access token which becomes constantly
larger. In order to enable those users to still access their mailboxes
on our Exchange servers, the DWORD entry "MaxTokenSize" with the
decimal value "65535" was made to the newly created key "Parameters" of
their registry branch
"HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlLsaKerberos ".
Since then those users can not access any of our SQL Servers using the
windows authentification. One of them gets the error
"[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead(recv().] General network error. Check your
network documentation.", the others the error "Check connection:
Failed: Cannot generate SSPI context".
In case of resetting the registry entries (by deleting them), the one
user receives the same error message as the rest while it doesn't make
any difference to those (but at least they can't connect to their
mailboxes).
After having researched the web, I realised in one of the SQL-Servers
logfiles the entry "Invalid buffer received from client.." which lead
me to start to believe it could have to do something with the kerberos
encryption in the first place. Therefore I asked if changes to the
tokensize had been made. I applied the change with "EXEC sp_configure
'network packet size', 65535 RECONFIGURE" on our testsystem and "EXEC
sp_configure" confirms that the value is run.
Consequence: The entry in the SQL Server log doesn't appear any longer, but the users still receive their error messages.
Do you have any hints?
Your comments will be highly appreciated!
Regards,
caracol

Hello all,
We have a Windows 2003 Web Edition server serving a site through IIS. It connects to a Windows 2003 Standard Edition server running SQL 2000 SP3a.
This site receives the following error as seen in the topic:
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead (recv()).]General network error. Check your network documentation.
We've configured the server network utility to only allow TCP/IP connections. The connection string for the site is as follows:
<%
' FileName="Connection_ado_conn_string.htm"
' Type="ADO"
' HTTP="false"
' Catalog=""
' Schema=""
MM_connSpankMSSQL_STRING = "Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=SERVER_IP,1433;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=ourmaindb_1;User ID=ourmaindb_1;Password=hotcookies;"
%>
Any ideas or tips on solving this issue? We've noticed it is due to larger queries as smaller ones do work with no problems.
The servers are behind a BSD box running iptables, has 1433,1434 along with standard web ports wide open. Anything outbound is allowed.
Some further testing via ODBC on the IIS server improved things. No more connection pooling for the SQL Server driver allows for 1/3 of the query to run. Still 2/3s of it doesn't show up, and that general network error message appears.
Should have 330 rows if it works right.

Since we change the web server to window 2003, we occasionally receive the message
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionWrite (send())
We use ASP and ODBC to access sql 2005. I have specified to use TCP/IP and port 1433 in ODBC.
Any idea to solve it?
Thank you in advance.

When executing an sp from the Analyzer, I get the following:
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionRead (WrapperRead()).
Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
General network error. Check your network documentation.
I don't get this with other procedures, nor do the eventlog from w2k or errorlog from SQLServer indicate something is wrong. The procedure that I call, calls another procedure which gives this error. When I call that procedure directly, I do not get this (or any other) error.
Any idea?

Assuming that IP/Sockets was added during the SQL installation.
Forgetting the known reasons for selecting them (Integrated security, etc.)
I've never fully understood why one connect method worked in some cases and the other did not. Can someone attempt to convey what the real differences are. What are required to use Pipes/Sockets. Do you need to be in same Workgroup/Domain, have a name server, etc.
I believe we all could benefit from a good explanation of this.
Thanks for any input,
Dano

A Win95 PC was having some TCP/IP problems that were corrected by the helpdesk. After that, SQL 6.5 client utilities were not working properly.
When trying to configure TCP/IP sockets in the Client Config, there is an error "Unable to locate the Net Library in Path". The necessary files appear to be in the correct path when I choose locate. I deinstalled and reinstalled the client utilities with no luck.
Also, when I enter the SQL Enterprise Manager, the error "Network Communications layer not loaded" appears.
Any ideas?

We would like to use dns entries (CNAME) to create transparency between server infrastructure and logical servernames. So we could physically move databases onto another server and changing the dns entry without reconfiguring all client applications.
Old situation:
- Financeapplication connects to SERVERA (wins) through a .ini file.
New situation:
- Financeapplication connects to finserver.mydomain.be (CNAME)
- finserver.mydomain.be points to servera.mydomain.be (A record) in dns
- servera.mydomain.be is refering to the ip address of SERVERA
We tried to connect and got a 'get_overlapped_results' (clientside) when using a dns name in combination with named pipes. At the server we are getting this error:
Error: 17832, Severity: 18, State: 8
2001-08-24 13:10:16.64 ods Connection opened but invalid login packet(s) sent. Connection closed.
Connecting to the wins name of the server does work! Connecting to the dns name also works when using tcp sockets instead of named pipes.
Though, on some client pc's this does work with named pipes too, but we couldn't find any regularity or logic when it works or when it doesn't (service packs, mdac versions, NT/95/98/2000, ... etc).
We also noticed that integrated security works with tcp sockets when using dns names, but it doesn't when using wins names.
Does anyone have a clue?
Kurt.

Background:
NT EE, MSCS, SQL 7.0 in Active/Passive environment. Add'l SQL installed on Passive server is hosting our Report database(any tips on Log Shipping?).
Anyway, I am unable to configure a client to connect to the secondary server via TCP/IP sockets.(Error 10061). I use the standard port 1433 and I've tried using both the name and the IP address for the server name.
What it looks like it's doing is only listening to port 1433 on the hearbeat nic. The reason I believe this is because when I ping the server name from that server, it returns a succesful ping, but using the heartbeat(seperate subnet)nics IP address.
Ping from a remote box works fine(DNS/Wins Resolution), and I connect fine with Named Pipes.
Both the primary and secondary server display the same results, the difference appears to be that only a virtual server in a clustered environment can have TCP/IP clients connect to it.
Can anyone verify this for me? Thanks a bunch...
MS says to go Active/Active and I am willing to do so, eventually.
Looking for a short term solution.
I'm not able to listen on a different port(again, appears only a Virtual server can).

We are having some problems using TCP/IP connection and was wondering what the benefits are to using this versus Named Pipes. The company that provides our software stated that this would improve performance but I do not see it and I am getting a lot of errors connecting. This also locks many of the users and I end up having to stop and start the database to clear the locks because there are so many. Would it be better to place the clients on Multi-protocol. It seems more powerful to use but I wanted to get some feedback from some people that may have dealt with this issue before.
Thanks,

Hello,
One of our customers is experiencing a problem that makes me think there is a network problem, because we make a request and never return from the driver, but the transaction is still open on the server awaiting the next command (and holding locks blocking other processes). I see a number of other driver writers have described similar problems, and their "workaround" is to set SO_TIMEOUT on the sockets (setSoTimeout) they create which is a last defense so that the transaction won't block forever.
I do not see this in the API documentation- how can I set this? Many other drivers use a connection string parameter, do you offer the same?
Is there any logging I can enable that can show me for sure that the driver is waiting indefinately on socket.read (thats not terribly expensive)?
Thanks,
Steve

I am running Windows 2003 Standard edition with IIS and SQL 2000 SP3a installed on it.
The web clients use ASP pages which use DSN to connect to SQL 2000 database. It has been working fine since last 1.5 years except 2 days ago when I faced this error suddenly on server:
In accessing any ASP page, it said:
[Microsoft][ODBC_SQL_Server_Driver][TCP/IP_Sockets_SQL_Server_does_not_exist_or_access_den ied.
On SQL Server error log, this was the entry at that time which I found:
SQLServer Error: 17, SQL Server does not exist or access denied. [SQLSTATE 08001]
The server (including SQL Server and agent service) were last stopped atleast a couple of days before, so it was not the problem about startup.
To troubleshoot, I restarted SQL Server and it worked for some time.
Then again on ASP pages, I found this error:
|80004005|[Microsoft][ODBC_SQL_Server_Driver][TCP/IP_Sockets]General_network_error._Check_your_network_document ation.
I checked the error logs of SQL server and didn't find anything.
Only entries were that the SQL is starting database, ports and IPs on which it is listening etc. The usual stuff. No errors in starting.
The SQL Agent log showed following errors:
2004-11-30 04:45:33 - ! [298] SQLServer Error: 2, ConnectionOpen (Connect()). [SQLSTATE 01000]
2004-11-30 04:45:33 - ! [382] Logon to server '(local)' failed (JobManager)
2004-11-30 04:45:36 - ! [298] SQLServer Error: 17, SQL Server does not exist or access denied. [SQLSTATE
I don't understand what was the problem. It first occured when nothing on server was changed, next it occured 30-32 hours later, and still now it hasn't happened again.
Does anyone know what can be wrong?
Thanks.

Then we went to Report Server, Reporting Service and SQL Server service are all are running fine.
Important thing is some time the reports are working fine, sometimes i am receiving this error. Please help.
We predict whether the services are automatically restarted or transaction logs exceeding the limit or any other parameters to set to avaoid this error?

I'm trying to use an XML Task to do a simple XSLT operation, but it fails with this error message:
[XML Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "There are multiple root elements. Line 5, position 2.".
The source XML file validates fine and I've successfully used it as the XML Source in a data flow task to load some SQL Server tables. It has very few line breaks, so the first 5 lines are pretty long: almost 4000 characters, including 34 start-tags, 19 end-tags, and 2 empty element tags. Here's the very beginning of it:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<ESDU releaselevel="2006-02" createdate="26 May 2006"><package id="1" title="_standard" shorttitle="_standard" filename="pk_stan" supplementdate="01/05/2005" supplementlevel="1">
<![CDATA[This package contains the standard ESDU Series.]]>
There is only 1 ESDU root element and only 1 package element.
Of course, the XSLT stylesheet is also an XML document in its own right. I specify it directly in the XML Task:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"/>
<xsl:template name="identity" match="@*|node()">
<xsl:copy>
<xsl:apply-templates select="@*|node()"/>
</xsl:copy>
</xsl:template>
<xsl:template match="kw">
<xsl:copy>
<xsl:apply-templates select="@*"/>
<xsl:attribute name="ihs_cats_seq" select="position()"/>
<xsl:apply-templates select="node()"/>
</xsl:copy>
</xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>
Its 5th line is the first xsl:template element.
What is going on here? I do not see multiple root elements in either the XML document or the XSLT stylesheet.
Thanks!

I have looked where the error logs should be, but there are no error logs.
I rebuilt the query as I needed to change this, but this did not help.
Is there someone who could point me in the correct direction.

This has worked fine for weeks, and months.
I'm running Vista Ultimate. SQL 2005 is set as my Default instance, and SQL2000 is set as (local)SQL2000.
Today, actually half way through today, I restarted my computer after installing Photoshop Updates.
Upon getting my computer back up and running, I cannot access SQL2000 from any website on my computer, nor can I access it from SQL2005 Management Stdio. I CAN access it from Enterprise Manager (SQL2000 tool).
Whenever I run an web app that connects to it I get this error:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
Now I usually get these when ASP.NET can't point to the right spot, but in this case I'm pointing exactly where I need to go. Any thoughts?
--Edit
I should also add my password got changed a few days ago on our Domain. This was the first time restarting after the PW change.

I have one table "ItemMaster" in my database.There is no relationship with this table,it is standalone.I am updating its values from Windows Mobile Device.
I am performing below operations for that.
Step : 1 Pull To Mobile
Code BlockmoSqlCeRemoteDataAccess.Pull("ItemMaster", "SELECT * FROM ItemMaster", lsConnectString,RdaTrackOption.TrackingOn);
Step : 2 Using one device form i am updating table "ItemMaster" table's values.
Step : 3 Push From Mobile

"The Push method returned one or more error rows. See the specified error table. [ Error table name = ]".
I have tried it in different ways but still i am getting this error.
Note : Synchronization is working fine.There is not issue with my IIS,SQL CE & SQL Server 2k.
Can any one help me?I am trying for that since last 3 days.

Hi All,
Recently in an SSIS package I am getting the following error for a particular Data flow task.
Error: 2008-01-25 12:01:48.58
Code: 0xC0202009
Source: Import Datasynapse Data User Events Source [3017]
Description: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x8000FFFF.
End Error
Error: 2008-01-25 12:01:48.73
Code: 0xC004701A
Source: Import Datasynapse Data DTS.Pipeline
Description: component "User Events Source" (3017) failed the pre-execute phase and returned error code 0xC0202009.
End Error
Our guess is when the data size of User Events table is more it throws this error. If we try to transfer small subset of data it succeeds. What could be reason for this error?
Since this is very urgent, immediate response would be very much appreciated.
Thanks & Regards,
Prakash Srinivasan

We are encounrtering a strange error in out sql error log:
source: ods
error: 17824, severity 10, state 0
source: ods
unable to write to ListenOn connection '.pipesqlquery', loginname 'op', hostname 'BOR0181'
This error occurs multiple times per day from several client stations.
It started when we enabled replication on that server, and started replicating the whole database to another server.
Can somebody give me an idea on what the problem could be ?
