1 Gb Memory Limitation, Total Or Per Instance?
Nov 8, 2006Good Morning,

If I install SQL 2005 Standard on Windows 2003 Standard, is SQL limited to 4 gigs of physical RAM?
I'm planning a new system that will run SQL 2005 Standard edition on a Windows 2003 Standard platform. The spec calls for 8 GB of RAM. My experience would lead me to suspect I need to install Windows 2003 Enterprise to take advantage of all the installed memory.
Question:
Can the SQL 2005 express edition can be installed on a machine that has more than 1 GB memory?
If so, is the SQL 2005 express edition will be using memory upto 1 GB?
I have been reading through the article pointed to by the link below on msdn and its documented that one functional limitation of user instances is "Only local connections are allowed." I didn't understand the technical details(meaning) of that limitation and hopefully some one might explain it to me so that i can understand it better.

I did a load testing and found the following observations:
1. The Memory:Pages/sec was crossing the limit beyond 20.
2. The Target Server Memory was always greater than Total Server Memory
Seeing the above data it seems to be memory pressure. But I found that AvailableMemory was always above 200 MB. Also Buffer Cache HitRatio was close to 99.99. What could be the reason for the above behavior?
Hi,
Can anybody explain to me what's going on with my Target memory and Total memory in Perfmon?
Last week, before I upgraded my servers memory, they were both almost the same, at around 24 on the graph. Target was just fractionally above total, but there was almost no space between the two.
Then I doubled my servers memory to 4GB and expected to see total go way up and target stay the same. However, target went up to 72, and total came down to 16. When I looked this morning, target is now around 47 and total is 25.
I guess I expected these numbers to fluctuate, but not as much as this, and also why is there now such a big difference between target and total?
Thanks
Colin

View 10 Replies View RelatedI’m setting up a server for development that will have one instance of SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition and one of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition installed.
The server has a total of 3.5 GB of physical memory, so I was wondering about the best way to allocate the memory. Should I just let both instances have the default allocation and let them fight it out for memory as needed, or allocate a memory limit for each instance?

One server, a part of a 2 node always on cluster, had problems, I had to restart.
I'm getting this error for example now:
Error: 49910, Severity: 10, State: 1. (Params:). The error is printed in terse mode because there was error during formatting. Tracing, ETW, notifications etc are skipped.

SQL Server was unable to run a new system task, either because there is insufficient memory or the number of configured sessions exceeds the maximum allowed in the server. Verify that the server has adequate memory. Use sp_configure with option 'user connections' to check the maximum number of user connections allowed. Use sys.dm_exec_sessions to check the current number of sessions, including user processes.
Now, on the instance I have activated maximum servere memory, my question; Is it possible to adjust this setting without starting the service?
Some parameter for example?
The server itself have enough memory.
We have a SQL enterprise server 2014 with two installed instance.
First instance for SharePoint 2013 DBs and second instance  Dynamics AX 2012 R3 DBs.
The server has 32 GB of RAM, currently the process usage for first instance is 26 GB and second instance is 700 MB.
Which mean that SharePoint DBs in the first instance is consuming most of the RAM.
My question is there any way to assign a fixed RAM usage for a specific instance without affecting the other instance?
for example 16 GB only first instance and 16 GB to second instance.
Does anyone know how I can determine the number of page writes that have been performed during a set period of time? I need to figure out the data churn in that time period.
TIA
Very new to SQL and trying to get this query to run. I need to sum the total trips and total values as separate columns by day to insert them into another table.....

I have a table that writes daily sales each night but it adds the day's sales to the cumulative total for the month. I need to pull the difference of todays cumulative total less yesterdays. So when my total for today is 30,000 and yesterday's is 28,800, my sales for today would be 1,200. I want to write this to a new field but I just can't seen to get the net sales for the day. Here is some sample data. For daily sales for 6-24 I want to see 2,000, for 6-25 3,000, 6-26 3,500, and 6-27 3,500. I'm thinking a case when but can't seem to get it right.
CREATE TABLE sales

sales decimal (19,2))
INSERT INTO sales (date_created, sales)

('6-24-15', '22000.00'),
('6-25-15', '25000.00'),
('6-26-15', '28500.00'),
('6-27-15', '32000.00')
My table contains 1000 records,
I need to know the total record count with the below paging query
SELECT EmpName,Place

How to get?
Hi, can anyone help?
I have created a Report using Visual studio-the report displays a subreport within it.
On the Subjective Report I have 12 values for each month of the year.
For the first month the value is =sum(Fields! Month_1.Value), and I
have named this text box €™SubRepM1€™
The name of the subreport is €˜subreport1'.
On my Main Report, again I have 12 values for each month of the year.
For the first month the value is =sum(Fields! Month_1.Value)*-1, and I
have named this text box 'MainRepM1'
The name of the main report is 'GMSHA Budget Adjustment Differentials'
The report displays both of the subreport and main report values
but I now need to total these values together for each month in order to
produce a grand total.
I have tried using the following to add the totals for Month 1 together,
=subreport1.Report.SubRepM1 + MainRepM1
but this does not work and I get the following error message €˜The value expression for the text box 'textbox18'contains an error [BC30451] Name subreport1 is not declared'.
I feel that it should be a simple matter of adding the two sets of values together but I€™m having major problems trying to get these totals to work.
Can anyone help, thanks
Anyone has a "one sql statement" to get the total spaceused and totalspace allocated of an instance ? ie same as sum of relevance fieldsfrom sp_spaceused for each database in an instance, that works accrossversion of mssql from 6 onward.ThanksKD

Could it be down to not having enough memory? But would this not show in the advisor?
Hello. I have received the follwoing error upon an attempt to Browse the Cube. All other tabs are functional, including the Calculations tab. We are running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and SQL Server 2005 SP2. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
**EDIT** - Have confirmed SP1 for VS2005 is installed both locally and on server, also.

I've been researching AWE to determine if we should enable this for our environment.
Currently we have a quad core box with 4 gb of RAM (VMware). OS: Windows 2003 std, SQL Server 2005 std. 3GB is not set but will be as soon as we can perform maintenance on the server.
I have read mixed feedback on AWE, either it works great or grinds you to a hault. I would assume that the grinding to a hault is due to not setting the min/max values correctly or not enabling the lock page in memory setting.
We only have one instance of SQL on the server and this box won't be used for anything else aside from hosting SQL services. We do plan on running SSRS off of this server as well.
1. Will running SSRS and enabling AWE cause me problems? Will I have to reduce the max setting by the SSRS memory usage or will it share and play nice?
2. How do I go about setting the Max value? Should it be less than the physical RAM in the box? Right now its set to the default of 214748364, even if I don't enable AWE should this default value be changed?
3. It seems that even at idle the SQL server holds a lot of memory and the page file grows. If I restart the process in the morning, memory usage in taskmon is at 600mb or so. By the end of the day, its up around 2gb. How can I track down whats causing this, should this even concern me?
4. The lock Page in memory setting worries me. Everything I've read on this seems to give a warning about serious OS and other program support degradation. In some cases to the point where they have to restore the settings on the server before they can bring it back up. What are your thoughts on this.
Hello:
Does anyone know if there is a way to get SQL 7.0 to recognize 8 GB of RAM? The MS knowledgebase does not list anything usefull. On a test machine we upgraded the os from NT4 to Win2000 Advanced Server and SQL 7 will only recognize 4GB. We could goto SQL2000 but that is not supported with our current apps.
Thanks,
If there is a need to add a new column to the table, how would you do it to add it to an EXISTING report using RB? I don't want to create a new RB report. I want to add the new column to an existing RB report.
p.s. Anybody knows how to replace a Report Model on the report server when re-deploying it? Currently I manually delete the Report Model and re-deploy it onto the server. Otherwise, it gives me an error for duplicate IDs. Is there a switch that can be turned on? Thanks.

** For those 20 users (or fewer) who've read http://forums.asp.net/thread/1692306.aspx, I'm sorry that I ask the same question.Like I said above, what is the limitation of SQLEXPRESS, in terms of performance and scability?I'm creating a new webboard application that will replace the old one. I intend it to handle 200 concurrent users + 70000 records (9 years of data)The current system use Microsoft Access, which is reaching it's limit in performance and size. I took a look in the SQL Server product information page : http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/features/compare-features.mspx.It didn't tell me what I want, like how many connections it can handle, for example. If there are limitations that might cause my application to not reach the required specification (above), I may need to switch to MySQL. I've no intention buying a licensed SQL Server 2005.Thanks in advance.PS: Why there're so few users viewing my posts? Anyone know a more active forum that may help me?

I have a column called codeabbreviation and currently the Max character limit is 72. Now I want to decrease it to 35character max but before I do that I want to find all rows in that column that already exceeds the 35character max so that I can clean it up down to 35characters.
What is the proper statement to use so that I can query for rows that exceeds 35characters?
Does anybody know what is the limit for the number of values one canhave in a list of expressions (to test for a match) for the IN clause? For example,SELECT au_lname, stateFROM authorsWHERE state IN ('CA', 'IN', 'MD')Is there a limit in the number of expressions that can be included inthe list to check for a match to STATE? I know this is a bad example asthere are only 50 states, but my actual query is similar to this, theonly difference being I may have about 1000 values in the 'IN' clauseto test for a match.TIA!
