100,000 Lock Requests/sec

Jul 23, 2005

I'm monitoring one of our servers, and on the whole it is performing
well. However, I'm puzzled by the number of LockRequests/sec that
Perfmon is recording. We frequently see values exceeding 50,000 and
the current peak is 533,616 (the average, as I type this, is 35,102).
There are only 40 users on the system.

sp_lock shows nothing like this number of locks; it shows something
of the order of 30 locks maximum for each execution, which seems far
more reasonable.

SQL Profiler seems to back up the Perfmon values; it records hundreds
of "Lock Acquired" events per second during these peak periods.

For example:

NO. OF
LOCKS OBJECT STARTTIME
===== ====== ======================
678User_T2005-04-15 09:03:22.863
931User_T2005-04-15 09:03:22.877
924User_T2005-04-15 09:03:22.893
16EnquiryUser_T2005-04-15 09:03:22.893
961User_T2005-04-15 09:03:22.910
820User_T2005-04-15 09:03:22.923
4NULL2005-04-15 09:03:22.923
828User_T2005-04-15 09:03:22.940
4NULL2005-04-15 09:03:22.940
734User_T2005-04-15 09:03:22.957

Can anyone think why such a comparatively small system should generate
these numbers of locks? Why does sp_lock NOT show the same level of
locking?

Lock Requests/sec Too High?

Mar 21, 2008

Hi:

one production server DB is getting slower... (SQL2K sp4 ent)
1. dbcc checkdb(abc) with 0 errors
2. no blocking
3. no abnormal in sql log and event system log
4. only found one crypt32 auto update fail last night.

the Lock Requests/sec is kind high from 5400 to 15400 on 0.01 scale. max is from 57611 to 155411.

Could I increase the locks assigned to sql and what is the best way for it?

thanks

Error: A Deadlock Was Detected While Trying To Lock Variable X For Read Access. A Lock Could Not Be Acquired After 16 Attempts

Feb 2, 2007

I simply made my script task (or any other task) fail

In my package error handler i have a Exec SQL task - for Stored Proc

SP statement is set in following expression (works fine in design time):

"EXEC [dbo].[us_sp_Insert_STG_FEED_EVENT_LOG] @FEED_ID= " + (DT_WSTR,10) @[User::FEED_ID] + ", @FEED_EVENT_LOG_TYPE_ID = 3, @STARTED_ON = '"+(DT_WSTR,30)@[System::StartTime] +"', @ENDED_ON = NULL, @message = 'Package failed. From progress:

Error: The Script returned a failure result.
Task SCR REIL Data failed

OnError - Task SQL Insert Error Msg

Modify the expression to be valid.

Warning: The Execution method succeeded, but the number of errors raised (4) reached the maximum allowed (1); resulting in failure. This occurs when the number of errors reaches the number specified in MaximumErrorCount. Change the MaximumErrorCount or fix the errors.

And how did I get 4 errors? - I only set my script task result to failure

Row Lock Versus Page Lock In SQL 2000.

Apr 7, 2004

Hi
We are facing an acute situation in our web-application. Technology is ASP.NEt/VB.NET, SQL Server 2000.

Consider a scenario in which User 1 is clicking on a button which calls a SQL stored procedure. This procedure selects Group A of records of Database Page1.

At the same time if User 2 also clicks the same button which calls same SQL stored procedure. This procedure selects Group B of records of Database Page1.

So, its the same Page1 but different sets of records. At this moment, both the calls have shared locked on the Page1 inside the procedure.

Now, in call 1, inside the procedure after selecting Group A of records, the next statement is and update to those records. As soon as update statement executes, SQL Server throws a deadlock exception as follows :

Transaction (Process ID 78) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction

We are able to understand why its happening. Its because, Group A and Group B of records are on the same Page1. But both the users have shared lock on the Page1. So, no one gets the exclusive lock in records for update, even though, the records are different.

How can I resolve this issue? How can I get lock on wanted rows instead of entire page?

Please advice. Thanks a bunch.

Requests Timing Out A Lot

Mar 27, 2008

Hi. I'm new to SQL Server programming. I'm using it at my new job for the first time and catching on quickly. I've run into a problem where I run a request via interactive query and it times out. It's really annoying because it seems to happy a lot. Is this just a memory issue with my machine (it has 2.8 GB of RAM) or there a way around it?

Thanks!

Intercepting Connections Requests

May 13, 2008

Hello,
You help is very much appreciated.
I have an Intranet environment that contains tens of apps that use a specific database.
I want to create an Intranet test environment (which will use a test database), by basically copying the existing Intranet environment to a new location.

* I cannot change the connection strings in the applications level since each app stores it differently (some store it in Web.Config, some hard coded, etc....).

Then, have a layer that sits between the Intranet Apps and SQL SERVER (or inside SQL SERVER itself), that will intercept the connections requests.
Once intercepted, the code will check if the connection request comes from Intranet Test environemnt, and if so, change the connection string on the fly to point to the test database.

The question:
Is there a way in SQL SERVER 2005, to intercept connections, and then, based on the application that requested the connection, modify the connection on the fly (so that if the calling app is from test_Intranet – intercept the connection and change it to point to a test database, otherwise leave the connection as it is (live database).

Thank you,
Roy

Package Configurations - Some Requests

Sep 5, 2006

To any Microsoft SSIS developers reading this forum, some requests:

1) do NOT allow a package to run if it has "package configurations" enabled and one or more XML files with configurations cannot be found;

2) update the properties window with the properties read from the "package configurations";

3) allow relative paths in the "package configurations" locations (relative to the package location)

Thank you :-)

ERROR: A Variable May Only Be Added Once To Either The Read Lock List Or The Write Lock List.

May 22, 2006

Hi,
I have set of 2 DTS packages, one of which calls the other by forming a command-line (dtexec) using a Execute Process task.

From the parent package-> Execute Process Task->
dtsexec /F etc... /<pkg variable> = "servername"

Each of the parent and the called package have a variable: "User::DWServerSQLInstance" which is mapped to the SQL server connection manager server name property using an expression. The outer package has the above variable and so does the inner called package (which gets assigned through the command line from the outerpackage call to inner)

I "sometimes" get the following error:

OnError,I4,TESTDOMAdministrator,ACDWAggregation,{A1F8E43F-15F1-4685-8C18-6866AB31E62B},{77B2F3C7-6756-46EB-8C01-D880598FB4B3},5/22/2006 5:10:28 PM,5/22/2006 5:10:28 PM,-1073659822,0x,The variable "User::DWServerSQLInstance" is already on the read list. A variable may only be added once to either the read lock list or the write lock list.

Help would be appreciated!

I have seen other posts on this but, not able to relate the solution to my scenario.

Can SQL Service Broker Persist Requests?

May 17, 2007

I have a scenario where we want something like a message bus. We can have multiple clients sending in events and would like a way to

i) persist those events

ii) Send out the notifications to the subcribers (this would be some C# services)

What is the best way to do this? I know that we can build something from scratch using WCF Publish-Subscribe. But i was interested in knowing if I can leverage SQL Service Broker to do the work.

Submitting Report Requests From .NET Application

Feb 13, 2007

Hi,

One of my client want to shift his reporting to SSRS. He wants to submit his report requests to SSRS. He wants the report should run at the reporting server side (not on client system) and output should be exported to a folder on server.

I am some what successful in submitting the report requests using subscriptions. But I have no idea to retrieve the requests from SSRS with the execution status.

I have to display all submitted reprot requests with execution status (success or fail) in a data grid and user selects one report to see the out file. Where can I get this information?

And how can I create a subscription that runs immediatly after submission. (without any delay)?

Help me please!!!

Thanks in advance, Gouri Sankar

Mssql 2005 Problem, To Many Requests, Need To Optimize

Feb 2, 2007

Hello, I have a bit of a problem. Some of my pages has way to many database requests, some pages upto 70 requests, and the loading time can be all the way up to 12seconds because of the many requests. So i am trying to optimize it abit. What i want to know if how to send several ID's to the database and collect the result from all of the ID's, i have a stored procedure like this:
public DataTable User_GetUsernameTypeTwo(string strUsername){OpenDBCon();mCom.Parameters.Clear();mCom.CommandText = "Profile_GetUsernameTypeTwo";mCom.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@UserName", SqlDbType.NVarChar, 20));mCom.Parameters["@UserName"].Value = strUsername;myAdap = new SqlDataAdapter();myTable = new DataTable();myAdap.SelectCommand = mCom;myAdap.Fill(myTable);CloseDBCon();return myTable;}
To this i send a username and in return i get info about the user that then is presented on the page. If i have a gridview on the page with 20 posts, then it needs to make 20 requests to this file in order to collect all the info for all the users. Then i have one just like the one above that collects the photos of all the users. So my first thought was that i merge these two together, witch works perfect, reduces the database calls by around 40%. Then i thought, perhaps can i get all the info from all the users in 1 request, to reduce the load on the database even more, my problem is: How can i rewrite the one above to accept lets say 50 usernames (1 username can max have 20characters), and return the info from all of them. Since i use a stored procedure i cant with ease use WHILE (username = xxx) AND (username = yyy) AND (username = ccc), then i would have to add 50 Parameters and add each username to a seperate parameter and then look if the parameter is null or if it contains a username. So i need to find another way to send the usernames, so the sqlserver can add them to the where clause, perhpas using IN?
This is the sql server store procedure (it works perfect, when its one user i am requesting info about), i am using FULL OUTER JOIN because ALL fields i request can be NULL:
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[Profile_GetUserpopupInfo] -- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here@UserName nvarchar(20)ASBEGIN-- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from-- interfering with SELECT statements.SET NOCOUNT ON;SELECT settings_username.color, settings_username.pic1, settings_username.pic2, profile_profilephoto.imageurl, profile_profilephoto.alttext FROM settings_username FULL OUTER JOIN profile_profilephoto ON profile_profilephoto.username = settings_username.username AND (profile_profilephoto.approved = 1) WHERE (settings_username.username = @UserName)END
Anyone got any idea of how to send a bunch of usernames to this stored proc? (it must be efficient since there is alot of users)

What could be causing this? The reports are making queries through an OLE DB provider. There are no scheduled jobs, and the load doesn't seem that heavy.

A Variable May Only Be Added Once To Either The Read Lock List Or The Write Lock List

May 10, 2006

Hi All,

I have seen a few other people have this error.

Package works fine when run from BIDS, DTExec, dtexecui. When I schedule it, It get these random errors. (See below)

The main culprit is a variable called "RecordsetFileDIR" which is set using an expression. (@[User::_ROOT] + "RecordSets\")

A number of other variables use this as part of their expression and as they all fail, pretty much everything dies.

I have installed SP1 (Not Beta) on server. Package uses config files to set the value of _ROOT.

The error does not always seem to be with this particular variable though. Always a variable that uses an expression but errors are random. Also, It will run 3 out of 10 times without a problem. I am the only person on the server at the time.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Crispin

I'm Flooding My SQL Server With INSERT / UPDATE Requests. How Do I Optimize?

Sep 29, 2005

I have an application that calculates a bunch of numbers and then inserts them into a table (or updates a record in the table if it exists).  In my test environment it is issuing 100 insert or update requests to the server per second and it could run for several hours. After a the first several hundred requests, the SQL server is bogging down (processor at 90-100%) and the application slows down while it waits on SQL to update the database. What would be the best way to optimize this app?  Would it help to loop through all my insert/update requests and then send them as one big batch of statements to the server (per 1000 requests or something)?  Is there a better way of doing this? Thanks!

Are there any new features added in 2012 or 2014 to identify a Bulk request submitted through bcp.exe utility or any other sqlbulkcopy program?

How To Lock A Table So Others Cannot Lock It

May 23, 2001

Hi,

I want to lock a table so others cannot lock it but able to read it inside transactions.

The coding I need is something like this: set implicit_transactions on begin transaction select * from table1 with (tablock, holdlock) update table2 set field1 = 'test' commit transaction commit transaction

I have tried the coding above, it won't prevent others from locking table1.

So, I changed the tablock to tablockx to prevent others from locking table1. But this will also prevent others from reading table1. So, how can I lock table1 so others cannot lock it but still able to read it?

Thank you for any help

An application we are designing is behaving rather strangely. Basically, we
have a trigger on SQL 2000 on W2K Server watching for a record update. When
that happens a stored procedure gets executed which in turn spawns a VB that extracts that record, applies some rules to it, and writes a text file to disk. 9 out of 10 times, this program will cause a CPU spin, and it can't be killed from the Task Manager.

I did not write the VB app, I am writing the front end for the application in ColdFusion, but I need some ideas on what might be causing such behavior and how can the problem can be diagnosed. Thanks for any help!

With (no Lock)

Sep 3, 2007

Is it good practice to use WITH (NO LOCK) on SELECT statements, ie
SELECT * FROM MyTable WITH(NO LOCK)
Or does the SQL Server optimiser automatically use WITH (NO LOCK) ?

DB Lock-up??!!

Mar 29, 2007

Hello,

Wondering if anyone might have a guess about this.

I have a small 4 table DB. it's got several stored proc's and it's accessed through .NET to fill it in and get data from it.

It's been working just fine. But this morning, while it was doing its thing, I experimented with it by adding then deleting a View (through the View Wizard.)

Then later I started noticing that my .Net calls had slowed to a crawl (I hadn't made any code changes)and even making direct queries through Query Analyzer had slowed too.

My question is: being that there were no network issues, could the View create/delete have caused the DB to come to a halt or perhaps a table lock-up?

While I'm at it, is there anything that I can put in stored proc's or other places to prevent locking issues (if that's what happened here.)

I already use Begin/Commit Tran pairs.

And sorry if this post doesn't read like a SQL beginner, but believe me, I am.

Thanks for your advice!!

No Lock

Aug 20, 2007

Lets say i have a view.

vuTestingNoLocks

this view looks like this...
Create View vuTestingNoLocks as
SElect *

From dbo.Employees
inner Join dbo.EmployeeTerritories on EmployeeTerritories.EmployeeID = Employees.EmployeeID

If I select from this view using Select * From vuTestingNoLocks (NOLOCK)

Does the (nolock) command propegate down through the tables? Meaning will it scan tables that are locked still ignoring their locks?

How To Lock Out Everyone But Me?

Oct 13, 2006

I'm working with SQL Server Express, and I want to configure a named instance so that only the 'sa' user and a specified SQL Server user with a specified password have access. In particular, I'm trying to lock out BUILTINAdministrators. Furthermore, I need to be able to do this from a command-line, since I want to configure it in a script. Nothing I do seems to work.

I've attempted to use sqlcmd and the T-SQL call ALTER LOGIN [BUILTINAdministrators] DISABLE, but that returns the error "Cannot alter the login 'BUILTINAdministrators' because it does not exist or you do not have permission."

What I can (apparently) successfully do is run DENY CONTROL TO [BUILTINAdministrators]. This runs without reporting an error. However, after running it against the 'master' database and the specific database in my named instance I care about, I can still run the following:

sqlcmd -S (local)MyInstance -d MyDB -Q "select * from my_table"

and see the contents of my_table.

What do I need to do to restrict access exclusively to 'sa' and other SQL users I designate?
