I'm in the process of installing Hotfix kb934458 (9.0.3054) on a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 Server. This is for SQL 2005 on a Active/Passive cluster with 2 instances. I'm only getting this error on the Database Engine and Analysis Services. It was successful for Integration Services, Reporting Services and Notification Services. I've tried taking the 2 instances offline as well as tried installing from the Active then again on the Passive nodes. No luck... Any suggestions? Does this work for R2 release of Windows 2003 SP2? This is the log:

I have a database cluster which I am trying to upgrade to SP1+hotfixes. I was able to successfully upgrade to SP1, however when I try to apply the hotfix "sql2005-kb918222-x86-enu.exe". The install fails and generates the following error log; Can anyone please help? Thanks a lot.

I still have the following question which i would very much appreciate help in answering: If support is required from Microsft what is the acceptable level of SQL Server patching before Microsoft will agree to look at a SQL Server problem. ? SP4 Build 2039 + Build 2040 (awe fix) SP4 Build 2187 cumulative rollup SP4 Build 2249 fully patched as per KB894905 Do I need to apply builds 2187 to 2249 ? If so where/how can I obtain the down loads from ( 8.00.2187 - 8.00.2249) ?
Have logged a call with microsoft support but as yet no responce.
We have a SQL cluster server running with SQL 2005 Enterprise Edition SP2 on Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition. Currently the cluster has 2 nodes with Active/Active. Now I need to add a new node as a Passive node. So after I have done it, the cluster will be a Active/Active/Passive cluster.
Because the cluster is a production server, I need to know exactly how I add a new node onto the current cluster without breaking anything. Also this is my first time to install a passive node, so it is difficult for me to understand how to install and configure it.
I have already added the physical node onto the cluster group so I can see the new node €˜paused€™ from the Cluster Administrator. Now I need to install the SQL but I am too nervous to run the installation program.
My questions are:
1. Do I need to run the SQL install program from one of other active nodes in order to install the SQL on to the new node? Or is it ok to run the SQL install program from CD? 2. Do I need to create a new virtual name, a new SQL named instance and a virtual IP address for the new passive node?
Physical node name Virtual name SQL Server Instance Name IP address Node1 (active) SQL1 SQL1 xxx.xxx.xxx.100 Node2 (active) SQL2 SQL2SQL2 xxx.xxx.xxx.110 Node3 (passive) SQL3??? SQL3SQL3????????? xxx.xxx.xxx.120????
3. Is there a risk to delete or change the current active nodes? If so, will you let me know as I will be super-careful not to do it.
I have a SQL Server 2005 x64 bit with SP2 applied and patched to KB934458-x64-ENU (9.0.3054) I am unable to create a maintenance plan via Management Studio or save a plan in Management Studio using the wizard.
If I just try and create a new maintenance plan, then I get the following problem: "An OLE DB error 0x80004005 (Login timeout expired) occurred while enumerating packages. A SQL statement was issued and failed."
If I try and create any maintenance plan via the wizard, I get the following problem: "The SaveToSQLServer method has encountered OLE DB error code 0x80004005 (Login timeout expired). The SQL statement that was issued has failed."
I've doen a bit of digging on this and had initially thought it was related to the fact that I have two instances installed on 1 server. I've since updated the MsDtsSrvr.ini.xml file to point at both instances, as I thought that might have been causing the problem. That hasn't helped at all. Edited example of xml file is below:
(1) During installation of second node in active /passive mode do we have to assign new virtual sql sever name and IP address or can we join existing first node Virtual SQL server ?
(2) Do we have to carry full instllations in 2 nd node or only clint instllations ?what about location binary and data in 2 nd node ?
I have a sql server 2005 standard edition with Active/Passive Cluster in production.
I have a new requirement where i need to create a new instance on this active/passive cluster that can be used by our sharepoint servers. Can somebody please let me know what are the steps that i need to follow like
1.What i need to ask my network admin? 2.How i need to proceed installing? I am planing to do this over the weekend where i have the liberty of some down time. Any help greatly appreciated Thanks
Hi, I was wondering what the licensing requirement would be for following scenario:
1 active sql server installation installed on a windows failover cluster.
1 passive mirror sql server (single server).
1 passive log-shipped sql server (single server).
In the microsoft white paper it says:
When doing failover support, a server is designated as the passive server. The purpose of the passive server is to absorb the data and information held in another server that fails. A passive server does not need a license, provided that the number of processors in the passive server is equal or less than those of the active server. The passive server can take the duties of the active server for 30 days. Afterward, it must be licensed accordingly.
So do I need to buy an enterprise license for each of the additional passive servers...in the above example meaning I would need 3 licenses in total?
I have a 2 way cluster and I want to apply SP4 on it.
Basically, I have 2 servers. Server A runs a default instance and another instance. While the default services is disabled and the other instance is running, Server B runs the default instance and has the other instance disabled. This basically acts like a 2 way cluster (active/passive).
How can I apply SQL Server 2000 SP4 on the 2 servers and have all the nodes come up the correct way? What are the steps to achieve this?
I just tried to apply SQL 2005 Std SP2 on a cluster, and all succeeded except for the Database Services. I've looked about and can't see any specific information for this. The Summary.Txt is below. I thought I was following the appropriate steps, according to the SP2 Readme.
Thanks for any help. (I'm at the client today)

Hi, we've got this problem with some particular jobs: they look as they ran correctly, but actually they didn't made it all through their duties. The problem is that this job is calling a sequence of DTS, where there is a DTS with an ActiveX control which modifies another DTS before launching and some other tasks: the error happens there, . Launched from the DTS we get the error, from the job no...any idea how we could get the correct job information? Thank you Daniele
In desperate need of implementing a solution where the customer has purchased a CMS to replace their corporate site and wants to use MSSQL as the DB server type. I have 3 servers allocated to me to complete this and I could use some advice on the best setup. THey're running windows 2003 standard server along with sql 2000 standard server. The intended plan is for the 2 servers to become web servers with the last server becoming the sql server. The CMS will reside soley on the sql server and the content for the web site on the seb server(s). What I need to know is if it's possible to set up an active/passive node to accommadate this using the items mentioned above? From what I've been reading sql 2000 enterprise does clustering but I'm hoping this version of sql can be used for something. Any responses are appreciated.
This is the 1st time we are building a active/passive cluster with 1 node each. we usually install default instance and setup domain account as service account which will have an spn delegated. Now for active/passive cluster is it ok to use same domain account as service account for both clusters with both creating as default instance again as the windows was built as SERVER1 and SERVER2.
Few questions on a SQL Server 2012 two node active/passive cluster installation on Win2012.
1. What are the permissions required for the user used to install SQL Server 2012 cluster. Does it need to have any rights on DC or anywhere else apart from the local nodes ?
2. Can we give ANY meaningful name to "SQL Server Network Name" during installation ? Do we need to manually configure it anywhere else before or after the installation ?
3. On what scenarios we need to check/uncheck DHCP check box ?
It is an active passive cluster which doesn’t allow any testing. All instances have to be failed over together, we aren’t allowed to just failover 1 even for testing purposes. Node 1 is the active node and we can failover to node 2 for 30 days free of charge but services have to then be failed back.
We need to run the cluster with node 1 as the primary node always and 2 just use for failover testing or for less than 30 day periods whilst performing cluster patch upgrades etc.
Now l am sure we could fail over 1 instances at a time for testing and diagnosing issues plus if add a new instance that's not production to get to the platform level as the rest of the instances this would avoid taking production down in the fail over process.

I have a scheduled job to run daily at 4 am. the job imports data from client side from text files and puts data in our sql table. It takes around 1 hour. the problem is it doesnt stops after the import process completes.so after one hour i can see the data is imported into my sql table so thats fine but the job keeps running. I tried observing that job's spid in activity monitor in sql 2005 but after one hour i cant even see that spid but still job runs. its weird.and after that when i stop the job manually then it stops saying job completed succcessfully. that step is a last step and it uses windows cmd.my understanding is the job step doesnt understands that it got finished. what should i do in here?? any ideas r appreciated we are running the same job for another servers and its fine.

hi, i have a message queue system using sql 2005 service broker. the code and setup is the same on both dev and live database. but soon after i restored a live backup to dev. the queue stopped working on dev, live is ok thou. after some trouble shooting, i found that the server is not sending the message at all, but it says "Command(s) completed successfully" without any error messages.
setup:
-----------------------
create message type TestQueryMessage validation = none
create contract TestQueryContract (TestQueryMessage sent by initiator)
create queue TestSenderQueue
create service TestSenderService on queue TestSenderQueue
create queue TestQueueReceiver
create service TestServiceReceiver on queue TestQueueReceiver (TestQueryContract)
send message:
-------------------------
declare @conversationhandle uniqueidentifier;
begin dialog @conversationhandle
from service [TestSenderService]
to service 'TestServiceReceiver'
on contract [TestQueryContract]
with encryption = off;
send on conversation @conversationhandle
message type [TestQueryMessage] ('blah blah blah');
result:
----------------------------------
Command(s) completed successfully.
but when i do "select * from TestQueueReceiver", there's nothing. and i sure nothing else had picked up the messages.
We have a SQL 2014 active passive cluster with 5 instances. When the cluster was installed one of the nodes was a virtual machine. As we started to have problems and this is not a Microsoft supported configuration we decided to replace the virtual node with a phyiscal one. On 3 of these 5 instances we configured static ports (1433 TCP) this was required for applications and firewall implementation.
Now with the physical node joined to the cluster we have issues with these three instances. Whenever one of these instances is moved to the passive node the server authentication is changed from mixed to windows only. I'm no SQL expert at all but to me it looks like the configuration of the instances are not replicated to the passive node? I found some similar problems on the net but these are mostly under sql 2008.
I have some doubt about the IP Required for configuring cluster(both Window and SQL server)
Details : ---------- How Many IP(Public & Private) Required for 2 Node Active/Passive both window and SQL server Cluster ?
IP(Public & Private) Required : --------------------------------------- 1 : For Window Clustering : 2 node Active/Passive Cluster ? How many ip ? 2 : For Sql Server Clustering : 2 node Active/Passive Cluster ?how many ip ? 3 : Is there any mathematics for that ? How to analyse the IP requirement ?
I have upgraded our test server and on non cluster production machine. My next server is a cluster and I don't have a test cluster server. Do I upgrade the active node and that is all or am I going to need to fail it over and upgrade the other node.
Also the prerequesite for the upgrade advisor is .net 2.0 I am going to up that on each server one at a time but I am only going to add the upgrade advisor to one node is that ok.
I read the SP1 documentation and it clearly states only patch the active node and do not patch the inactive nodes.
Could someone give me an ideal of what it takes to upgrade the memory in my cluster. Is it as easy has upgrading the passive node, switching the nodes, then upgrading the other server. And do I need to re-configure the windows cluster. And will both server need to be down at the same time at any point.
Or is their more to the process? Thanks for any assistance.
Currently, I'm developing an ETL program using Microsoft DTS on SQL Server 2000.
I've completed unit testing & component testing for all inner packages containing various types of executions - SQL task, ActiveX Script task, Error Handler, Transform Data task, Data Driven Query & Dynamic Properties task.
When unit & component tested, all inner package properties-"Limit the maximum number of tasks executed in parallel" is defaulted to 4.
However, the integration testing is failing because I've yet to successfully execute any of the Package tasks in the outer package, which runs & controls all inner packages from the outer package.
The error message encountered was: --------------------------------------------------------------- | Error source: microsoft dts | | Error description: execution was cancelled by another user. | ---------------------------------------------------------------
Please explain what might be the cause to this problem when I'm executing the outer package?
I have a program that is automatically ran through a job. The program gets the most recent files that have been uploaded to a server. I would like to be able to query the database to see when the last time this job was ran successfully and set this date as the date to look for files newer than the last successful run date.
Could someone point me in the right direction to what tables this data is stored in on a 2005 SQL Server Database?
I have this data in a flat file and I'm doing a data dump to a SQL table. I created a SSIS package which ran successfully but only exporting 2 rows out of 4 rows to the SQL table. For some reason my package ignore two other rows where "col4", "col5" and "col6" do not have any data. No conditional component was used in this package to not to load those records.

I have had a serious issue with a production AlwaysOn cluster whereby the service did not successfully transition to the secondary node and I cannot find the root cause of the issue.
Some details: It is a 2 node cluster (same datacenter) with a shared disk quorum, Windows Server 2012, both are virtual machines running on VMWare vSphere  5.5. SQL Server version is 2012 Enterprise SP2 CU6
The failover occurred because of a network incident (a spanning tree recalculation caused a connection timeout between both nodes). Initial entries in the SQL Log look normal for this event, for example:
05/08/2015 11:18:06:Â A connection timeout has occurred on a previously established connection to availability replica 'FIN-IE-PA078' with id [6910F4A9-87E7-4836-BA79-0F41BE90266D]. Â Either a networking or a firewall issue exists or the availability replica has transitioned to the resolving role. 05/08/2015 11:18:06:Â AlwaysOn Availability Groups connection with secondary database terminated for primary database 'UserManagement' on the availability replica with Replica ID: {6910f4a9-87e7-4836-ba79-0f41be90266d}. This is an informational message only. No user action is required.

My interpretation of this is that the cluster failover attempts failed, because the network condition still persisted. The network interruption lasted approximately 2 minutes, and I would have expected the cluster to come back online at this point, after the restart delay period as suggested in the last entry in the error log. However this did not happen.
I need to install the SSIS components on the referenced database server. I believe the SSIS components are cluster aware, so I was planning on just doing add/remove and selecting the components. Rather than breaking the cluster apart to patch the components back to SP1, I was thinking of just running the SP2 install right over the top of the running cluster to bring everything up to SP2.
I'm looking for any suggestions/comments on whether this is the proper way to proceed or if I'm going to have a problem.
I have a page that runs a transaction correctly after a button click. I want to allow someone to click a button that rolls back the transaction, after the transaction runs on the first button click. I can also successfully roll back within the first button click. I'm getting a NullReference error when trying to access SqlTransaction.Rollback() outside the button click. If SqlTransaction.Commit() completes without error can SqlTransaction.Rollback() be called after? I tried making 'trans' a more global variable and it still gave me the error. Button Click 1: Dim trans As SqlTransaction trans = connection.BeginTransaction() try 'run SQL Statement trans.Commit() Catch e As Exception trans.Rollback() throw e end try
