I am running 2005 SP2 (It is the SP2 refresh as I downloaded the SP2 on 3/15/07) and I can't get the .txt maint plans to delete. The job completes successfully; however, the old .txt files are still there. I found this technote: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938085
although I don't receive the error message in the KB. The report does have "New Component Output" as the 1st line in the report. I still don't see how deleting the 1st line of an already run job (the report) will affect a new run of the job.
Also, I checked the version of the Microsoft.SqlServer.MaintenancePlanTasks.dll and it is at 9.00.3043.00 (which is the SP2 Refresh) in KB 933508 ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933508 ).
I have several SQL/2005 servers and they all have this problem. Any help would be appreicated...
Does anyone know an easier way to create DB Maint Plans instead of having to create each one manually? i.e. Copy Maint Plans from 1 server to another automatically. Does anyone know of a quick export method.
We are working on converting to SQL 2005 database. During the conversion we are having to rewrite a lot of code and doing a lot of intital testing and development on development data. This is causing our transaction logs to really big. I have created a maint plan that runs nightly that does a back up of database and tran log but throughtout the day the tran logs are getting really big and eating up a ton of disk space. Does anyone have suggestions on what sort of maint plan I can setup to run on my developement data where as at this point I am not concened about being able to roll back the database just keep is small as possible and "healthly"
Hi fellow techs! I am getting to know SQL 2000 intimately and it's been a fun ride with the top down!
My question is, are there any gotchas that I should be aware of in SQL 2000 if I want to change 3 of my databases running on one 2000 SQL server from simple to full recovery model? I want to begin backing up the log file for point in time purposes, but don't want anything to break by disregarding the gotchas, if there are any.
Hi, I am not able to delete the Legacy maintenance plans created: for example I created a maintenance plan: "MyPlan" with: master.dbo.xp_sqlmaint and the plan created at: ManagementLegacyDatabase Maintenance PlansMyPlan
After this I tryed to delete this using SQL Server Management Studio, it is deleted (right click on the plan and select delete menu item) But when I refresh the server, the "MyPlan" is back again.
I'm the dba for a large company and have setup many maintenance plans for our sql servers. One of the options I have set is to delete old backups of databases and transaction logs after 2 days. For some reason, the old database backups are being deleted, but the old transaction logs backups are not. I have them being put in the same directory. Anybody have any ideas why this is happening and what if any fix is available?
I have the following issue with Maintenance plan backups that work for BAK DIF and TRN to a remote server share. When I try and remove the old files with a clean up task I get an error and the files don't get deleted.
The version is as follows Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3054.00 (X64) Mar 23 2007 18:41:50 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)
The error result is as follows,
Failed-1073548784) Executing the query "EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file 0,N'\\EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file 0,N'\ABCD-A1\BACKUPS\ABCD_BACKUP\ABC_DAILY\ABCD',N'trn',N'2008-01-13T12:52:49'" failed with the following error: "xp_delete_file() returned error 2, 'The system cannot find the file specified.'". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.
The maintenance plan seems to be adding extra "" though when i enter the code directly in a query i get same error.
xp_delete_file() returned error 2, 'The system cannot find the file specified.'
The servers belong to the same domain and are using the same Service account which has all the necessary rights to the share and the file directory location. The backups work but i get the error on the cleanup task.
Trying to figure out how to get the Cleanup task to delete old files. The same happens for all file extensions and I have tried other locations with simpler file paths same error.
I am creating a sql 2005 maintenance plan backup job. How can i specify 'write log files to some particular drive'. I am new to sql server 2005 Please advice
We have an application that uses MS SQL 2005 to stored information related to user internet usage. It is storing a large amout of data on a daily bases. The application is set to create a new logging database, when the current database reaches 10GB, then it will start logging to the new database.
A new database is getting created at the rate of about 1 new db every 48hrs and the backup maintenance plan for the user databases, is not picking up the new database. I have to remember to refresh the maintenance job so, the new database gets picked up and is included in the daily backup.
Is there a way to have the backup maintenance job refesh itself? Or possibly a stored procedure or some sort of scripting option to do this?
Please provide information if you have a way of doing this. Thanks.
We have some to-disk backups scheduled on our 2000 Enterprise machine - nightly fulls, hourly logs - that go to a network share located on another machine. They were originally stored directly on the same machine as SQL Server, but we changed them to a remote destination within the past few weeks. This works okay, but despite having the maintenance plan set to remove files older than 2 days, old files don't seem to be removed. Understandably, this gets to be a problem when the backup disk becomes filled.
Is there any obvious reason why this option wouldn't work against a network share? I've checked the directory permissions, and the SQL Agent domain account should have no trouble deleting the files.
SQL 2005 SP2 install succeeds but in SQL Maintenance Studio the instance is still 9.0.1399. Also when I interogate using TSQL it is reported as 9.0.1399
Here's the log (I did try it a couple of times)

I have a database and I see that I have a lot of TRN files behind it taking up more than 82GB disk space.I have a TRN file from Jan until today. I plan to delete every one of them until April to recover 59 GB of disk space. Would that be OK?
We have our Maintenance routines set up to delete files older that one week, but it is not working...
...Consequently, we forget to go out and remove the files manually, thus we lose backups due to the drive being full and have to manually remove files, then backup the databases and start all over again.
Has anybody had this problem and can you tell me where to look to try and figure out what the problem is ??
i have a maintenance plan running on my database, in which I told the wizard, on creation, to "remove files older than 4 week" and yet it doesn't seem to be doing so, as on checking this morning, diskspace was getting low, due to over 300gb of backups and trn' dating back to september.
Anyone have ny problems with maintenance plans not cleaning up when told?
My new request is I have enabled C2 Audit mode and wanted to delete old files that is more than 200MB. Could you Please give me a query ?. Thanks, Ravi
This Maintenance Cleanup Task is set to delete all BAK and TRN files it's made (in seperate maintenance plans) in given path, with the given file extension, delete files based on the age of the file at task run time. Delete files older that 4 days.
The files are now backing up for months and months. I'm not going to take care of this. I've got a computer to do this for me, every time it runs its jobs, every 4 hours and once overnight.
This is ignoring commands and refusing to do as it's told. I've checked the settings in here over and over. It's so simple - what could be wrong? I've checked the path, the file age, the extensions... The disks are getting full!
I get the following error when I try to delete files using the FTP client in a SSIS package. This is the error I get.
Error: 0xC002918E at FTP Task, FTP Task: Unable to delete remote files using "FTP Connection Manager".
Task failed: FTP Task
This is a unix server. I'm able to delete the files using other FTP clients but the FTP client in the SSIS package cannot delete the files. I read on many places on the interent that this is a known MS bug. Let me know if there is some sort of work around for this. I'm using SQL servewr 2005 SSIS packages to accomplish this task..
I have three FileStreams (FS1 on F drive, FS2 on H drive, FS3 on E drive) belonging to the same FileStream group of one particular database (DB) which is in Simple recovery mode in the SQL Server 2012.
FS1 contains huge number of files due to which F drive is completely full.
So, I am trying to move some of the extra files from one FileStream (FS1 on F drive) to another FileStreams (FS2 on H drive and FS3 on E drive) using command:
dbcc shrinkfile('FS1', emptyfile)
Then, I take the Full and Differential backup of the database and issue the CheckPoint and try to delete the already duplicated files from the Filestream FS1 to get some space in the F drive using command:
We had someone create an extra data file and log file for tempdb. Sowe currently have two data files and two log files. Is it possible todelete the newly created data and log files? If I just delete thephysical files, I assume they'll get created as soon as SQL Servergets started back up. Any help would be great, since a single dataand log file for tempdb is my goal. Thanks much.sean
I am utlizing a scripting object in my ssis to combine two text files into one final file, and then I want to delete the original files. To do this I am utilizing the FileSystemInfo namespace and associating the file names, then utilizing the DELETE functionality.
The creation of the final file works perfectly...unfortunately, my base files do not delete, and I do not get a failure message or indictator.
Here is my code:

I am using the backup task and backing up a database but want to delete all backup files older than 5 days old. I am using the file task for this and have built the path in a variable but am trying to use a wildcard for the time. I am getting illegal character in path. How can I go about this.
I currently have E:MSSQL.1MSSQLBackupdatabasename_backup_20070309*.bak in my input variable and am trying to delete the file databasename_backup_200703091532.bak
Ok, I must be blowing my mind here. I created a maintenance plan to run on Sundays at 10PM. This plan failed due to Tempdb running out of space. I rectified this and scheduled the maintenance plan to run the next day. This did not work either. The underlying jobs just did not kick off. Nothing in the event viewer or SQL Logs.
The reason, the jobs that this plan created also need to be changed. Has anybody encountered this?
Further, I have a SQL Express on my laptop, which I use for maintaining our db servers(SQL 2005 Standard Version). When I alter the portions of the Maintenance plans(e.g. I changed the selection of the databases for "Index rebuilding" part) using my work station connected to a Production/QA server, when I try to save the changes it gives me an error: "Failed GUID........and some 16 digit number most of which are all XXXXX". But if I change the schedule it does not give an error but it does not change it either.....
I am really lost. I never had such problems on 7 or 2000.
Having problems with SQL 2005 Database management plans!!!!
I can't seem to delete any old logs that I don't need.
I have put together a Maintenance Cleaning Task on the back of my backup plan but I can't get the log files to delete even though I have set "delete files older than the following" to my requirements.
I have created a simple maintenance plan in SQL Studio. When I double-click on the task boxes (ie 'Rebuild Index', 'Backup') to just make changes or to look, I get the following message:
Cannot show editor for this task
Additional information:
Exception from HRESULT: 0xC0010014 (Microsoft.SqlServer.DTSRuntimeWrap)
I cannot rename, edit nor delete this task, Do you know what might be the problem?
There are some perculiar goings on happening on my servers. Plans across servers have been doing funny things like dumping back ups in different folders, some jobs have been hanging, so on and so forth.
And I think it's occuring after modifying SQL Server 2000 plans with SSMS. It's so intermitent, it's hard to put my finger on exactly when it's happening. It may have not even been reported yet. Fixing the anomolies are achieved by recreating the jobs (a matter of unticking and ticking the boxes in the Maintenance Plans).
In SQL 2000, if you create more than 1 schedule on a job that was itself created using a maintenance plan, SQL Server returns a message along the lines of "Dude, do this and weird things might happen". The message doesn't say what exactly, just that it can no longer guarentee the integrity of the plan. And indeed, weird things does happen, I tested it once.
I'm guessing this is a similar problem, but has not yet been pinned down. Has anyone come across this when using SSMS to maintain 2000 plans.
At this stage, I would like to point out that this is not a slagging off Maintenance Plans thread... I'm looking in the direction of anyone who's name starts with the letter Kristen or Tara
Drew
"It's Saturday night; I've got no date, a two litre bottle of Shasta, and my all-Rush mix tape... LET'S ROCK."
Can anyone please provide me with some Best Practises for setting up Maintenance plans? IE what order should things be done in? What should be done daily, weekly, monthly, yearly... I am attempting to setup a new server and I am now 100% sure I have the maintenance plan setup correctly... expecially when I attempted to run it last night it and ran for over 8 hours and still didn't do the backup's yet. I had to reboot the server this morning to make it stop using 100% of the CPU. So please any help would be wonderful.
I've seen a few threads on this which seem to suppose the problem is on Express edition rather than Standard edition. Not so here. This is definitely Standard edition, SP3 as seen by running SELECT CONVERT(char(20), SERVERPROPERTY('Edition')) SELECT CONVERT(char(20), SERVERPROPERTY('ProductLevel')) In SSMS Under the Management folder there is no "Maintenance Plans" folder. There IS a "Maintenance Plans" folder under the Legacy Folder. I have another instance which is Standard and SP1 which looks just fine.
