SQL Reporting With Oracle Datasource

Dec 15, 2007

I am new to SQL Reporting services and learning from website tutorials. I could easily connect to Adventure Works database and could create some reports. Now I want to create one report from Oracle database in my network on one of my server (Network computer). I could not connect to database as do not know what to write (is path like Server name or IP address 152.168.1.25 Oracle database name) is required in Server name field? Server Type should be OLE DB or Oracle and OLEDB Provider should be Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle? Then Server of filename?
Is there any tutorial or material available, which can help me in establishing this connectivity? Any help is greatly appreciated.Do I have to install any thing on my local computer for oracle ( as read in one of forum for Oracle Client or something like that)

Sql Server 2005 Reporting Services And XML Webservice DataSource

Dec 14, 2007

I am new to both Reporting Services and Webservices implementation so I am just trying to use a simple example. I found a Webservice on the internet that returns movie information:

http://www.ignyte.com/webservices/ignyte.whatsshowing.webservice/moviefunctions.asmx?wsdl

I am trying to call in using XML DataSource and with absolutely no luck. Here are the steps I have followed:

DataSource type: XML
Connection String: http://www.ignyte.com/webservices/ignyte.whatsshowing.webservice/moviefunctions.asmx

Report Data Quert:

<Query>
<SoapAction>http://www.ignyte.com/GetUpcomingMovies</SoapAction>
<Method Namespace="http://www.ignyte.com/whatsshowing" Name="GetUpcomingMovies">
<Parameters>
<Parameter Name="month">
<DefaultValue>12</DefaultValue>
</Parameter>
<Parameter Name="year">
<DefaultValue>2007</DefaultValue>
</Parameter>
</Parameters>
</Method>
<ElementPath>RunQueryResponse{}/RunQueryResult{}/diffgram{}/DataSetName/TableName</xmldp:ElementPath>
</Query>

I am getting an error: The XmlDP query is invalid. (Microsoft Report Designer)

Any help? I am trying to figure out this simple example so I can apply it to my own webservice.

Thanks

SQL Server 2005 Reporting Serivces: XML Datasource Problem

May 24, 2006

Hi,

I'm just starting to use SQL Server 2005 Reporting services, and need to use an XMLdocument as the datasource. I will get the xml data from a webservice and then need to bind it to the report. Here is what I am doing:

1. I created a webservice at the following location:
http://localhost/myWebDirectory/myService.asmx. this webservice has a method called "GetXMLDocument" that has 1 parameter (sql). This method uses the sql statement to fill a dataset from a SQL Server database, converts it to an xmlDocument, and returns the xmlDocument. Here is a sample of the results:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
- <NewDataSet>
- <Table>
<ReportName>GirlsNamedMary</ReportName>
<ReportFriendlyName>All Girls Named Mary</ReportFriendlyName>
<ReportDescription>This is a test SQL Server Reporting Services report. It has no parameters.</ReportDescription>
</Table>
</NewDataSet>

2. I created a datasource in my reports project as follows:
- Name: TestDataSource
- Type: XML
- Connection string: http://localhost/myWebDirectory/myService.asmx

3. I created the following dataset:
- Name: TestDataSet
- Data source: TestDataSource
- Query string:
<Query xmlns="http://tempuri.org/Service/GetXMLDocument">
<Method Namespace="http://tempuri.org/Service" Name="GetXMLDocument"/>
<ElementPath />
</Query>

I am getting this error:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An error occurred while executing the query. Failed to execute web request for the specified URL.

Additional Information:
----> Failed to execute web request for the specified URL. (Microsoft.ReportingServices.DataExtensions).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I cannot figure out why I have this error. The service runs fine from the browser, but I just can't get it to work in Reporting Services. What am I doing wrong?

Getting Error When I Try To Connect Oracle 10g (32bit) From MS SQL Server 2005 (64bit)

Apr 29, 2008

We have recently migrated from SQL 2000 (32bit) to SQL 2005 on Win2003 (both are 64bit). And we have Legacy DTS packages on SQL 2005, some packages are pulling records from Oracle 10g (32bit server). When I execute the DTS package I am getting following error.

Error = -2147467259 (80004005) Error string: Oracle client and networking components were not found. These components are supplied by Oracle Corporation and are part of the Oracle Version 7.3.3 or later client software installation. Provider is unable to function until these components are installed. Error source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle

Did I need to install/update any MS OLE DB driver for Orace.
Some blogs & forums suggesting to install Oracle 10g Client. If so Which version of Oracle client(32bit/64bit) I have to install?.

Thanks.

[Express 2005] Unable To Connect To Datasource

Aug 21, 2006

I've never used SQL Server before. I installed VB 2005 Express (I've been working with VB since I was 16), and SQL Server 2005 Express.

I installed the server with all the default settings and created a small database to handle customer information (a remake of some Access and Oracle databases I've made before).

I'm told, however, each time I try to connect to the database via VB, that SQL Server isn't accepting remote connections...

Remote? It's on a local computer. So is VB...what is going on here? Is there a setting I've missed?

Problem Connecting To Oracle Using Sql Server 2005 Reporting Services

Sep 3, 2007

Hi,
I'm new to SSRS but have a problem connecting to Oracle. I have placed my reports upon a reporting server but the shared data connection isn't working and I'm confused as to why. I have specified the name, connection type as "Oracle", set the correct user id and password for the credentials and the connection string as for example 'Data Source=oracleExample;Unicode="True"'. I also have set the correct entry in the tnsnames.ora file for this datasource, example:
"oracleExample =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 12.23.45.23)(PORT = 3425))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SID = oracle)
)
)"
Unfortunately I receive the following error when trying to connect.
"

An error has occurred during report processing.

Cannot create a connection to data source 'oracleDataSource'.

For more information about this error navigate to the report server on the local server machine, or enable remote errors

"

I'm mystified as to what the issue is. Any ideas? Would restarting the report server pick up the tnsnames.ora file? I have this working locally using report designer.
Any help, much appreciated.

Reporting Services 2005 And XML DataSource (as WebService)

Apr 25, 2006

I'm trying to build WebService to use result as DataSource for RS 2005 (XML DataSource).

But I have a strange problem.

I have WebMethod with parameters.

When I'm testing my WS in browser then everything works just fine.

But... When I'm trying to call this web-service from VS2005 environment then something strange happens.

Looks like VS passing parameters incorrectly to my WS (not passing at all!)

I've created very simplyfied version just to check parameters:

using System.Xml;
using System.Xml.Serialization;
using System.Messaging;
using System.Text;
using System;
using System.Web.Services;
[WebService(Namespace = "http://company.org/")]
[WebServiceBinding(ConformsTo = WsiProfiles.BasicProfile1_1)]
public class GetRemoteData : System.Web.Services.WebService
{
[WebMethod]
public XmlElement GetData(string CompanyName, string FunctionName, string ParameterList)
{
XmlDocument xmlDocument = new XmlDocument();
XmlElement xmlElement1;
xmlElement1 = xmlDocument.CreateElement("parameters", "values", "urn:errors");
xmlElement1.InnerText = String.Format("{0}, {1}, {2}", CompanyName, FunctionName, ParameterList);
return xmlElement1;
}
}

In the browser WS returns all passed parameters back correctly. VS - not.

What's wrong with my code? Why MSDN example works fine?
Do I need to specify some undocumented (soap specific) attributes?

Where I can find full tutorials how to create RS-compatible web-service?

(Sorry for cross-posting but I have no single reply...)

Reporting Services 2005 (VS 2005) Using Oracle 10g Stored Procedure

Apr 17, 2008

Hi,
I want to get data from Oracle 10g Stored procedure to Reporting Services 2005. I could pass a SQL text and get a record set, but I want to execute a store proc and get the record set.

1. Add New Data Source
2. Choose Type : Oracle and connection tested OK
3. { call Test_Package.Test_Procedure(?) } is it wrong... how to write???
There is an error in the query. ORA-00911: invalid character

Also make sure that you use the text-based generic query designer (2 panes !) instead of the visual query designer (4 panes) - you can switch between them through an icon on the toolbar in the data view of report designer.
Question : I tried many methods but unable to solve it...

create or replace
PACKAGE Test_Package
AS TYPE Test_Type IS REF CURSOR RETURN Test_Table%ROWTYPE;
END Test_Package;

create or replace PROCEDURE Test_Procedure (
Test_Cursor IN OUT Test_Package.Test_Type,
Test_Parameter IN Test_Table.ID%TYPE
)
AS
BEGIN
OPEN Test_Cursor FOR
SELECT *
FROM Test_Table WHERE Test_Table.ID >= Test_Parameter;
END Test_Procedure;

The below site gave some example but i could not solve it... any suggestions greatly appreciated...

Multivalue Parameter Against Oracle 9 Datasource?

Jan 22, 2007

Everything I have read says that this is possible in Oracle 9 and greater versions, but I can't get it to work...

Here is my query:

select * from employee where employee_id in ('111','222')

This works fine in the data tab until I replace the values with a parameter. I get the pop-up to enter the parameter values but no matter how I enter them, I don't get any rows returned. I've tried entering them as '111','222' and as 111,222 and changing the parameter type from a string to an int, but nothing seems to work.

I am running this on SQL Server RS 2005 and my Oracle driver (Oracle in OraHome92) is version 9.02.

Connecting To Oracle Datasource For Import

Nov 29, 2006

Now this is the first time i have tried this with SQL 05 I am trying to Import data from an Oracle DB. I have the connection info:

Xtx20xxx = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST =(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST =urlpart1.part2.part3.com)(PORT = 1521)))(CONNECT_DATA =(SID = Xtx20xxx ))
)

I used the Microsoft OLEDB provider for oracle from the dropdown,

The username and password I have also. I tried to enter in the Xtx20xxx as the server name, clicked "Properties"

put in the username and password I can given and clicked "Test Connection". No matter what I get the infamous ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name error message. I am sure I am missing something obvious here but I have absolutely no clue and all the googling in the world has not given me any help. I do have the Oracle 10g client tools installed on this workstation (running Windows XP Prof SP2 and SQL 2005 STD).

SQL Server - Oracle Differences - Connect By Prior

Dec 5, 2007

Hello ,

I'm facing a complicated problem and I don't think that the solution will be an easy one.

I have an SQL statement in Oracle which I need to translate it in Sql Server 2005.

select lpad(' ',5*(orderid)) || to_char(descr) as menui
from <table _name>
where MENU_ITEM not in ('test1','test2','test3') and item_parent not in ('test4,'test5,'test6')
start with <item_parent='item_parent' >
connect by prior <menu_item = item_parent and menu_name='ADR_m_adr_frame'; > ?(condition)

Somewhere I have read that SQL server does not support Hierarchical Sql statements. Is this true ? How am I going to do that ?

Any help will be appreciated.

Expected Performance Of An Oracle Datasource For 10 Mlns Rows?

Feb 4, 2008

Hi all,

I have been reading some topics on "slow Oracle connections", but I have not found an answer for my question yet.

The problem is that I am extracting data from a Oracle database to Raw files (to import into our DWH later on).
For one table this takes more that 1 hour! I find this to be very slow, but maybe I am expecting too much speed?

Can anyone tell me how long it should take to download 10 million rows from Oracle to Raw file (no transformations)?

Some extra information:
- The table has 10 million rows and a little over 200 columns
- The datatypes in the Oracle database are varchar, number and date
- I tried to tune the buffer size in the data flow and found that I could fit about 1900 rows in a DefaultBuffersize of 100 MB
- I use the "Native OLE DBMicrosoft OLE OB Provider for Oracle" (Provider=MSDAORA.1)

Can I do anything to get a better performance or is 1 hour for a table like this the best performance we can get?

(Changing the Oracle database is unfortunately not an option...)

Thanks and regards,

Ellen

SSIS : Oracle As Datasource --&&> Issues With Numeric Datatype

Oct 17, 2007

Hello,

I have to develop a package to get some data from a 10g Oracle database and load it to a SQL Server 2005 database.

In my design I used Oracle Provider for OledDB as my source provider following Microsoft recommendations found here : http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb332055.aspx

As I have to use a parametrized query against my Oracle database I create a variable with my query that I override at runtime with a script task to update the parameters values.

One of the return column is of numeric datatype.

To handle this known issue with Oracle sources I edited through the advanced editor my Oledb source component to manually correct the precision.

Everything works fine with one of my package.

So I repeat the whole process while designing an other one with the same purposes.

As for the previous one I first unit test every components and everything works. But when running the full package it raised an error code 0x80004005 Error while validating post executing phase of the component (sorry for the poor translation from french to english ...)

I open my dataflow where the component is and found no warnings or errors. I edited through the advanced editor my Oledb source component and found that there's an error on the precision scale of the numeric return column. The message warn me that the precision must be between 1 and 38.
I checked this column and in the "OLE DB Source output / External Columns" the precision is 0 though I previously manually corrected it.
I upadted again for a 18 precision as it is for this column in "OLE DB Source output / Output Columns".
But it never keeps my changes ......

I delete the component and recreate it to force the metadata to be updated but always the same thing, the precision scale for this column in the "OLE DB Source output / External Columns" never keeps my 18 value.

Does someone have any clues to help me ?

Thanks a lot.

The error I get is "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. Cannot Connect W/ Java App But Can Connect W/ .Net App - SQL Server Express 2005

Dec 12, 2006

I'm having a problem connecting with a Java application but I CAN connect using my .Net application - the user name and password are the same for both (using the same database on SQL Server Express 2005).

The error I get is: "com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Cannot open database "CORNERS" requested by the login. The login failed." An interesing note - I get the same message if the database is not running.

SQL Server Express 2005 is installed in mixed mode.

Here is my connection string in the .Net appplication: <add key="connectString" value="Server=(local);UID=sa;PWD=myPasswd;Database=CORNERS" />.

These are my values in my Java app web.xml -

<init-param>
<param-name>DBDriver</param-name>
<param-value>com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBURL</param-name> <param-value>jdbc:sqlserver://localhostsqlexpress:1055;databaseName=CORNERS</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBUser</param-name>
<param-value>sa</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBPwd</param-name>
<param-value>myPasswd</param-value>
</init-param>.

And yes, the port is 1055 - I checked to find it.

I am using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver 1.0 (sqljdbc_1.0.809.102).

Does anyone have any idea what is wrong so that the login fails in the Java application but works in the .Net application?

got it working for simple examples (passing back strings etc)
also woking passing back an object
but cant get it working with a dataset - am having trouble filtering out the XML resultset

this is my webmethod
[WebMethod]
public DataSet DSetExample()
{
DataSet ds = new DataSet("XMLTest");
DataTable dt = new DataTable();
DataColumn dc;
dc = new DataColumn("IntegerColumn1", System.Type.GetType("System.Int32"));
dt.Columns.Add(dc);
dc = new DataColumn("StringColumn1", System.Type.GetType("System.String"));
dt.Columns.Add(dc);
dc = new DataColumn("DecimalColumn1", System.Type.GetType("System.Decimal"));
dt.Columns.Add(dc);
dc = new DataColumn("DateTimeColumn1", System.Type.GetType("System.DateTime"));
dt.Columns.Add(dc);
DataRow drow = dt.NewRow();
drow["IntegerColumn1"] = 1;
drow["StringColumn1"] = "WTF";
drow["DecimalColumn1"] = 205.299;
drow["DateTimeColumn1"] = DateTime.Parse("22/May/1966");
dt.Rows.Add(drow);
ds.Tables.Add(dt);
return ds;
}

this is my basic query
<Query>
<ElementPath IgnoreNamespaces="true">*
</ElementPath>
<Method Name="DSetExample" Namespace="http://localhost/testservice1">
</Method>
</Query>

this just gives me the first node details

but when ever i try and specify the elements i want by using the ElementPath
nothing comes back....

just need to know how to specfiy the ELEMENTPATH to return the dataset details...

thx

Native Oracle SQL -&&> SQL Server 2005 CE .sdf File -&&> Using Visual Studio 2005?

May 23, 2007

I've got a table adapter that connects using an oracle data connector. In the adapter, I'm using native oracle SQL such as:

select TO_DATE(SUBSTR(TO_CHAR(weird_oracle_field),0,12),'YYYYMMDDHH24MI') as dt_added from oracle_data_table

There's also a CASE statement in there with some other data transformations.

Anyway, I want to take the results of that Oracle query and put the dataset into a SQL Server Compact Edition database - within an application that I'm creating in Visual Studio 2005.

For whatever reason, I can't seem to do anything like that in 'bulk' and there aren't any data migration tools that work with anything other than "full" SQL Server versions. My client doesn't support SQL Server, but I can deploy my app with SQL CE. I need a 'local' copy of the database (for several reasons) and just can't seem to figure out how to make this work.

I'm really going nuts. I feel like I'm soooo close when I see the data I want in the table adapter - but I can't seem to actually *move* the data over!!

Can anyone help?

thanks,

Jon

Sharepoint List As Datasource In Reporting Services ?

Oct 25, 2007

Hi everybody,

I was wondering if it's possible to use a sharepoint list as datasource in reporting services ? If yes, what's your trick ?
Is it possible to use a directory as datasource in reporting services ?

Thanks for your response,

Have a nice day,

Aurore
