2nd SSRS Instance (named) Access Via Management Studio

I have installed and configured a 2nd instance of SSRS 2005 Standard Edition SP1 on a Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2. The 2nd instance is using it's own database and virtual directories under the default website. All configuration steps ran without error. I have no problem accessing the 2nd instance virtual directories via IE. When I connect to Reporting Services via Management Studio, it gives me no options for which instance to access and connects to the default instance. How do I connect to a 2nd named instance of SSRS via Management Studio? I've found no documentation in BOL related to this.
I have serveral instances of SQL server running on a number of servers. On one of these servers I have a default instance and a named instance. I am trying to manage all my instances of SQL server from my desktop through management studio with idea being that I can control things without having to log onto the server. I have been able to connect to all my instances with the exception of the named instance. I get the following error when I try to connect. I have set the named instance so it allows remote connection. What else should I do?

This is a slight re-stating from an older thread, which I think warrants some new discussion. The answer has always been that system administrators should have full access to everything on a system, including databases.
Although that is a logical position for internal IT departments it doesn't quite fit the model of systems with outsourced or external system support.
"If you don't trust your DBA, then you need a new DBA. They are in a position of authority for a reason and restricting that authority makes it impossible for them to do the job they are hired to do."
What about scenarios where you have local machine administrators that should NOT be given access to private data in a secured database, even though they need to be able to access and maintain everything else? And unfortunately some regulations are written about access to stored data whether encrypted or not...
In the modern world of Sarbanes-Oxley and PCI-DSS/CISP it is no longer so cut and dried. Especially where companies have software/hardware support contracts with third parties that require administrative access to other aspects of the systems.
So accepting that you might need someone to have administrative level access to the box but they should not be able to view the contents of a database installed on that box, what would you do?
Is there a way to create an adminstrative group that does not allow access to a specific named instance of SQL?
Is there a way to revoke access for one member of the administrators group only?
I am creating a SQL Named instance as a testing environment. This instance is on the same physical box as my Development environment, both are SQL 2005 standard edition. From the server in Management Studio, I can load, and interact with both instances. From a remote connection (e.g., my pc) I cannot access the named instance. I am getting the following:
Connect to Server
X Cannot connect to <server><named instance>

When connecting to SQL Sever 2006, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server) I have checked, and rechecked the server settings for this named instance, and remote connections are set to "allow" I have enabled TCPIP and Named Pipes prototocals, and have ensured that my firewall is allowing the "listenting port" for the named instance, and have even tried turning off my XP firewall during testing. I am sure that I have probably missed something, and have searched the community but only have been able to find resolutions that I have already tried. Is there more? Thanks in advance for any help and guidance you can provide.
I try to connect from a pc to a SQL Server on another pc. Both pc’s are in a workgroup. I want to connect from a Windows Forms application to a named instance on the other computer. By now I have been able to connect from one pc to SQL Server on the other with tcp:smurfin, 52782.
I want to be able to use servernameinstancename (instead of portnumber) to make a connection in a Windows Forms application.
I’ve checked / tried te following:
•In the properties of the instance, tab Connections, the option Allow Remote Connections is enabled •In Configuration Manager: TCP is enabled •The service SQL Server Browser is started •On the tab IPAddresses, in the section IPAll, there is NO portnumber for TCP Port. And TCP Dynamic Ports has the nummer 52782 •I have created un inbound rule for port 52782 and also for 1434 (SQL Server Browser). And to be on the save side: a rule for 1433 as well. •Restarted the service
If I run the following code in SQL Server, that same port number (52782) is returned:

Hi, I have serious trouble trying to log in to SSRS using Management Studio. I have installed SSRS to existing named instance of SQL 2005 than I have configured it using Reporting Services Configuration tool. At this point some thing was not OK as initialization button is grayed out (although it indicates that initialization went OK). At this point everything seems to be OK the reporting site is available through web browser. Alas when I€™m trying to log in into reporting services using Management Studio I get error €œUnable to connect to remote server. No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it (System)€? I was trying different authentication methods and different configuration. I was trying to set up permissions to DCOMs as suggested on some topics on this forum. Finally I got to SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and when I go to Surface Area Configuration Features and click on Reporting Services, Windows Integrated Security I€™m getting error €œThe request failed with HTTP status 403: Forbidden (System.Web.Services)€? and than whole Surface Area Configuration Features is closing. At this point I had no further idea what is going on and what more I could try to make it work. Any help greatly appreciated.
I'm attempting to extract some yearly average figures from our DB. I've written a SELECT statement in SQL Server MS which returns exactly what I need:

The problem is that when I attempt to use this in SSRS I get the following error:
"sub.Year is not a recognised DATEPART Option".
Now as you can see, "sub.Year" is not even mentioned in the expression. However I noticed that when running the query, SSRS automatically adds "sub." before the YEAR in the section highlighted in yellow above. a) Why is it doing this, and b) does anyone know of a workaround/fix?
I am trying to develop a package using SSIS to get rid of Informatica.
But I am not able to connect to the SSIS from the SQL Server Management Studio. The error message is 'Connect to SSIS Service on machine XXXXX failed: Access denied'. I am using Windows authentication and I am in the DTSADMIN role. I have 'dbo' privileges in all the databases in the Server where the SSIS Service is running (Yes, I checked and the SSIS Service is running). The SSIS is installed in the same Server as my SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition is running.
I can see that the same issue is posted by many people and no answer is posted againt it. It will be greatly appreciated by many beginners to SSIS if the answer to this question is available generally.
I have another question too. How do I transfer data between two databases in two SQL Server 2000 machines using SSIS? I really want to use something like the BCP OUT and BCP IN with memory pipes to avoid the intermediate data landing. How do I achieve it? I do not want to use the linkedserver here because of the excessive logging for the huge data volume I have.
Any answer to the above questions are greatly appreciated.

I am not facing a problem while connecting to sql server 2005 databse, when i attach that first, in management studio, then I can access that from localhost, its fine at this point. but when i detach that database from management studio i am facing the follwing error while accessing it from localhost i.e. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Unable to open the physical file "D:databaseHunzian.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)". An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file D:databaseHunzian.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share. The connection string to access that database is undefined=@"Data
I have a stored procedure which is run through MS Access (yuck). It does not appear to fail, but it does not populate certain tables, and is also rather complex. I did not write it, and am trying my best to fix it. However, when I run the same procedure with the same parameters from within Management Studio (database state is the same, I restore from backup before trying out each execution) it populates the tables correctly. I have profiled both executions (from MS and from Access) and it is running with the same NTUsername, and thus the same permissions. The process used to work and then some changes were made to the DB which seem to have broken it from Access. As far as I know, the Access code has not changed, although it may have done so. The proc call from Access uses the same parameters, and does not throw an error, although it does not appear to close the connection to the DB (I'm looking into this). Access uses an ODBC connection to connect to SQL Server.
Is there a way to deny the users the ability to open a server via Management Studio but still allow remote connections.
In my program I need an admin login to do various things. I am using the sa login and setting the password on install of Sql Express. But, if someone changes the password for the sa login after installation and I have the login for sa hard coded in my program, then everything will break. Is there a way to make sure that no one can change the sa password?
I have a client who would like to access his database via SQL Server Management Studio. I created a login for him. This login has access only to his database on the server (I set this up using the user mapping), the Securables has Connect to SQL checked (otherwise he won't see his database). When I test this login, he is able to see all the other databases on the server, though when he clicks on the ones he doesn't have access to, it will tell him that he can't access that database. He can access his database alright. My question is, can I hide all the other databases from him, and only display that only database he has access to? I have tried many different ways, I can't seem to be able to do so.
For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area": (1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the following: Select Computer The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer. Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer O Remote computer Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option? I just installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition from my company's DVD. It was installed with the setting of using both Integrated windows authenitication as well as basic named authenication. I installed all the options too: Database Engine, Analysis Services, Reporting Services, SQL Server compact edition, and Integration Services. When I look at services there are: SQL Server Integration Services, SQL Server Analysis Services, SQL Server Reporting Services, and SQL Server Browser. All of which are running. Something that took me offguard was the installation did not ask me to provide an SA password. Other than that, the install looked like it went good.
I was able to connect to the local instance of the SQL Server 2005 using the SQL Server Management Studio. I could connect with SA, or connect with Integrated Windows Authenication. Whoohoo. Off and running! As a matter of fact, for the SA account I could use any password and it would still log me in.
First thing I did was I went in to the copy wizard to attempt to copy a database from a server on our network to my local box. First it asked me for the remote server. Then when I specified my local instance in the wizard, the wizard complained that my local instance was NOT SQL Server 2005. Doh! This I didn't understand. I figured maybe I need to check for MS updates. Sure enough, I found that ther was a SP2 and then a hot-fix for that SP2. I applied both. Now I cannot connect from SQL Server Management studio to my local instance of SQL Server 2005 database server. I get the following error:

However, I went in to see what other services I could connect to, and here's the results:

I can connect to other SQL Server databases on our network. However, just not my local one. No one on the network can connect to me either.
I even turned off my windows firewall and still no luck connecting to my own.
So something really went wrong when I applied SP2, however, admittedly from the error message when I tried to use the copy wizard, something was probably already wrong.
Can't connect to local server instance MSSQLSERVER in SQL Server Management Studio (SQL2005 sp2/Vista).
SQL Server Configuration Manager reports SQL Server2005 services: SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) Running. This would indicate the name of the SQL server is "MSSQLSERVER" correct? I chose "default" instance during the install and that is the name it gave itself.
I tried connecting to the server using the following for the Server Name: MSSQLSERVER and .MSSQLSERVER neither works.
The only thing that works for my installation is just plain "." (no quotes) and nothing else. Can this be correct because I can't find any reference to this. Thanks.
I've two instances(Default, Named[dynamicsFINANCE]) running on SQL server 2014. However, when I try to connect to named instance say (dynamicsFINANCE) using SQL authentication from local SSMS, I get below error message:

I assigned a static port number to the named instance [dynamicsFINANCE] 1450. I also setup the firewall rule to allow access to Port 1450.
Hi, I hope you can help.I have configured a Windows 2003 web server and SQL 2005 Server (on same box) to successfully allow remote connections and to allow access via SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005.The problem I have is that I want to restrict access to the databases on the server via the Management Studio to specific databases e.g. 1 database user "sees" only 1 database.I can configure it so that the user's remote access permissions do not allow access to other databases but they can still "see" the database listed in the Management Studio explorer.I can also configure it so that the users cannot see all the databases (by disabling View All Databases on SQL Server), but this means that they cannot not see their own database which they have permissions for.Is it impossible to have the desired behaviour of only displaying the database which the remote user accessing has permissions for and hiding all other databases?I have MSN'd,Googled and Yahoo'd this one to no avail :(Many thanksFergus
I have a 3 node cluster on which I have installed SSAS as it's own insntance. I have created this as a named instance and can connect to it by serverinstance if I'm on the server itself. However from my desktop I get the error saying instance was not found on server name.
I have defined an alternate port and setup firewall rules and can connect via server:port but not serverinstance. Prior to making this change SSAS was running on default port of 2383 and I could connect just by servername.
I have read many articles for previous versions saying that clustered SSAS will always use 2383 and that you must connect just using servername. However and this is were it gets strange. I have a 2 node UAT cluster with SSAS setup exactly the same way I've described above and I can connect from my desktop as serverinstance.
Should I be able to connect as serverinstances for a named clustered instance in 2012 ?
Hi, I have a task in hand to migrate (upgrade) from SQL2K named instance to SQL2K5 default instance. There are many intranet applications touching current SQL2K. I would like to perform this upgrade such that I don't have to touch any application code - meaning I don't have to change the connectionstring to point to new Default instance. How can I achieve this?
So, in otherwords, here is what I want to achieve:
Current Server: SQL2K: SERVER_AINSTANCE_A (named instance)
If I have both default, I could achive this by setting up DNS alias after migration done so that any call for SERVER_A would point to SERVER_B. But in my case, I don't have SERVER_A, I have named instance. Is there any solution?
I know from searching this forum that there have been many variations of the issue I'm currently suffering, but I haven't found anything quite like mine or a solution to solve it. The issue I'm running into is that I am unable to log on to Reporting Services using Management Studio or the web interface when Windows Integrated Security is enabled. I have full functionality using basic security, but the risks involved make it impossible to deploy basic authentication out into production. The error I'm receiving in Management Studio is The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient). I recieve the same error when I try the web interface.
I've looked the most recent logfile in WindowsSystem32LogFilesW3SVC1 and these entries match up to the time I attempted my authentication.

I tried to highlight one of each of the HTTP errors I am getting. 401.2 and 401.1 are the ones I kind of expected, but have no idea why I'm getting them. The 500 0 error is a bit troubling, because unless I'm mistaken thats a server side error.
Here's my current setup. As far as I can tell, I've done everything to set up correctly for Windows Integerated security.

Users (CompNameUsers) - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read In ReportServer I have the same permissions except Authenticated Users is absent.
At one point, I even added the account Everybody and gave it full control, and I still recieved a HTTP 401 error. Any help at what I might be missing would be a godsend.
I am trying to set up a Named Instance of SQL 2000 on the same machine that has a default instance of SQL 7.0. The setup always completes and I am able to register the Named Instance of the SQL Server with which it was installed on. However, when I try to connect the users to the database, with both windows and SQL authentication, I receive a SQL server not found error. I have tried an alias setup as well as physically specifying the port number in settup up an ODBC connection. Has anyone ran into similar problems? Also, has anyone been able to successfully complete the process as mentioned above?
I have a server with sql server 2005 installed as the default instance -- I have a piece of software that needs SQL2000 to be the default instance. Is there a way other than install new sql2005 named instance and move databases to rename my SQL2005 instance from <machinename> to <machinename>sql05 for example?
Hi all, I have read/studied (i) Working with Databases in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express in http://quickstarts.asp.net/QuickStartv20/aspnet/doc/data/vwd.aspx, (ii) Xcopy Deployment (SQL Server Express) in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165716.aspx, (iii) User Instances for Non-Administrators in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143684.aspx, and (iv) Embedding SQL Server Server Express in Applications in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165660.aspx. I do not understand the concepts and procedures to do Xcopy and User Instances for non-administrators completely-I do not know how to connect to databases and create database diagrams or schemas using the Database Explorer. I have a stand-alone Windows XP Pro PC. I have created a ChemDatabase with 3 dbo tables in the SQL Server Management Studio of my SQL Server Express and a website of my VWD Express application with an App_Data folder. I am not able to proceed to use Xcopy and user instance to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase to my App_Data folder. Please help and give me some detailed procedures/instructions to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase (or ChemDatabase itself) from the SQL Server Management Studio Express to the App_Data folder of the website of my VWD Express project? I installed SQL Server 2005 recently on a cluster. I didn't go for the default instance and instead I named the instance option. Now I would like to migrate everything from the named instance to the default instance, which I haven't yet installed.
Is this an easy process? What about the logins and the maintenance plans and jobs? Is there anything else I need to be aware of?
I've never had to do this, but when I downloaded the Web Workflow Approvals Starter Kit, it requested that I install the database into a User Instance of .SQLEXPRESS.
Now the problem is, I've installed it onto a default instance, so I was wondering whether you can create a named instance on top of a default instance... and if so, how would you do that?
I have a client who has SSMS installed on her laptop. She is able to connect to the SQL server via SSMS in the office and query data on the server.
She needs to be out of site often and doesn't have internet access. She asks if the data tables can be "backed up" or saved on her laptop, so she can look at them without worrying connecting to the server. I am not sure if this can be achieved, as SSMS is built for accessing a server, not a desktop. Myself never have this need. If I really need it, I would go to Microsoft Access and create an ODBC connection to the datatables. But this client thinks that Microsoft Access is beneath her.Â
The box I am trying to connect to is running two instances of SQL Server. There is a SQL Server 2005 instance which is the default. There is a SQL Server 2000 instance which is named 'SQLSERVER'. I can connect to the SQL Server 2000 instance no problem:<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPCSQLSERVER;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" /> However, I am having trouble connecting to the Default SQL Server 2005 instance. I have tried: <add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" /> but it doesn't work. I have tried explicitly setting SQL Server 2005 to use port 1434 (as SQL Server 2000 is running on port 1433), and then used: <add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC,1434;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" /> but this doesn't work either.
Am I mssing something here? Any help much appreciated Thanks...
If you were asked to install SQL 2005 on a machine, would u install a default instance or a named one? And why would u choose one over the other?? Also, r there any issues with using a default instance?
