5000 Database On Single Machine

My bos wants me to create 5000 database on single sql server box. I was stuned by his stupility but could not stop it. What kind of box could hold these databases ? Each DB is about 6.5 MB starup with 4 MB for 6 months. Each DB will have 10 users. They might hit at same time. What kind of configurations for the server box ? What kind of maintainence nightmare ? How about recovry ? and so on. Any one got idea ? or any more question you would ask if you were me ? Thanks

I use SQL 7.0 server to build large scaled Web application.
I want to know that reasonable number of database in single machine. I know
single machine can get a 32,767 database in SQL 7.0.
We think database deploying method as following two cases.
Case 1)
We will provide multiple web application services and each service will be put into each database. Some table in a database will get about 1,000,000 records. 1,000,000 users will access each database. The number of services will be 100.
Case 2)
Or, we group 4~10 services and these group put into one database and another group of services put into another database.
What is the best database deplying method that reliable to performance and maintenance ?

Hi everyone -
Here is the setup -
new install, same old software
only difference is the machine name has
a single quote (apostrophy) in the name...

Now - a portion of the application is failing -
the starting of the application runs ok,
and the system is indeed seeing the database
(it allowed the user to log in)
so the connection string seems to be ok - just in that
one part...
does anyone know if the machine name with an embedded
apostrophy will cause the ADO connection string to puke???

Hi,
I have a table with 1.6 million records with a foreign key called "ums_id" (int). I would like to select the ums_id's in groups of 5000. is there a simpler way to break these id's up instead of
select count(*)
from newsletter_opt_in
where ums_id between 493525 and 510075
and opt_in_Id = 1 and opt_in_status = 'Y'
I would like to break up the whole 1.5 million in one sql statement if I can.

I'm trying to build a association model in the Standard Edition based on an existing cube. I keep getting the error:
Error (Data mining): The 'Product Recommendations' mining model has 60385 attributes. This number of attributes exceeds the attribute limit of 5000 allowed by the current version of the algorithm associated with the mining model.
I created Cube Slice filters and those limit the Customer and Product dimensions (Product is Nested) to well under 5000. The error message also does not change. The number of attributes is equal to the number of rows in the Product dimension, but I expected the cube slice to reduce the number. I tested all the SQL used while it processes and with the MDXFilters the number of rows returned is well under 5000.
So, in short, the final questions is, is it possible to create a mining model in standard edition based on an existing cube where the nested dimension in the model has more than 5000 rows? Is there some other way to filter the query?
I guess my only choice on this if there isn't a way is to extract the data into relational table with only the rows I want to analyze....that's a huge pain and doesn't really make sense when the filters should limit the model size.
What is annoying on this is I can't find one reference anywhere on the microsoft site that this limit even exists within the product...

I can't paste text (directly into table row via enterprise manager) into a varchar (5000) field, truncates after about 960 char. Length of string trying to paste is about 1400 characters including spaces. No special characters (one apostrophe). Error happens intermittently.

Background: 3rd party program that extracts users from a AD group and manage user creation i a MSSQL 2000 server. Also sends e-mails using the SMTP service. The funny thing is that the program manages everything correctly, but writes an error in the Event log as it exists (below). Job is scheduled with the SQL server agent and runs with a doamin user that has local admin rights. We have the same setup on a testserver where it runs without problems.

I'm not a developer, so I'm pretty lost why it behaves like this on one server and not the other. Checked Aspnet.config-file and they are the same. Found this

that described that the exception handling was different between the .NET-versions, but since this works on one of the servers, it shouldn't be related, or could it? Tried changing the setting in method 2, but with the same behaviour. Any ideas?

I have a [User] table with a field called Username and a field called AssignProject. The values in the AssignProject field look like this: 9900|5057|5002|5000|90010|5086|5003|5097|5038|5059|5043|5099|5096|90000|5084|9991|4180|5047|6064|9999|4160|5104|5110|5107|5109|5115|
Those values are foreign keys for values in another table called Project, where the primary key is ProjectID and the other field is ProjectName.
I am trying to write a report in a T-SQL query to tell me which projects are assigned to each user, but the query is not a typical join since the ids are in a string separated by the | character.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hello Everyone
I want to install only the Reporting Service (and Analyzing Service) on a machine without any database (I will create a dedicated SQL Machine later on). Now, after the installation process I can see a SQL Server in my Installed Programs View. To me this looks like a complete SQL Server installation,but this is not what I wanted (I only checked the two services during the Setup). Or are those just some supoorting components?

I am using Script Transformation to output a new column as image[DT_IMAGE]
field to store serialized object. In the VB script, the sample code as

I have enterprise version software CD1 and CD2 of SQL server 2005
when i try to run setup.exe..the following error pops -up
The image file Setup.exe is valid, but is for a machine type other than the current machine
MY OS version is windows 2003 32bit Operating system...
I am suspecting the binarie may be of 64bit.. How do we check the binaries are 32 bit and 64 bit software

Hi to everyone,
I'm facing a problem that drives me crazy. I've a web application that has the following problem. When I test the application on my developement machine all runs fine, but when I put into production server there is a problem in connection pooling. Look at the following image, the blue line is the number of connection in the pool and the violet line is the number of connection reclaimed. From the image it is clear that connection are returned on the pool only in block, maybe when the garbage collection pass and reclaim the object. The strange thing is that on my developement machine all is good, and also I'm using Enterprise Library and the connection are managed internally.- Thanks to everyone for any help.

running the procedure as a Domain user results in a failed job/stored proc.

I have two servers, namely ServerA and ServerB. These two servers are on the same subnet. ServerB has a database called DatabaseB.
I'm logged in in ServerA and trying to pull data from DatabaseB.
This is the query I do when I'm logged in in ServerB (note im using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio):

Im guessing this is the right forum for this question:
I have a database on a WS2003 box running on MSDE 2000. Were trialling SQL 2005 (currently running on Win XP pro) so what i would like to do is to "copy" the database from the WS2003 box to the XP SQL box. So we can evaluate the database and see what SQL does/doesnt do.
1. How can this be done please?
2. Will it do anything to the original database?
3. Can this be scheduled to be done everyday? if yes how please?

According to my technical support for web hosting, for database format they only use "MS SQL" operating on a windows system, usualy clients create they're sites on their local machines using "MS SQL".
I'm just wondering.....
Is 'MS SQL' free? where can I get it?
I also have the option of creating the site round an access databse but I'm worried about the security issues,
do you think it would be wise to use access?
Is it easy to convert a site written in ASP.NET&ACCESS into a site using ASP.NET&"ms sql"?
because then I could code a site in the former on my machine and then change the code to link to an sql server.

Sorry to break the threay i started earlier but once again I need this to work and I have spent al day on it with no luck.
SCOPE:
I need to copy my database from my sql server 7 platform to another office on
another server that also has sql 7. DTS will not work for me due to network traffic and so forth I would get messages saying that it failed. i tried it off/ peak time but still the same.
Now in the days of 6.5 I would be able to creat a new db device for LOAD then I would copy the dump over there and run LOAD database blab blah .. No brainer.
I have tried the following ideas some of you have mentioned such as back up the db (I would zip it copy it over there ) unzip it and tried to RESTORE it but I get the following: "The backup set holds a backup of a database other
than the existing 'mydb' database. Backup or restore operation terminiating abnormally."
I would also try restoring from FILE and I would get the similar message.
Sp_attach and detach no good either.
What am I missing. i would create a new 'mydb' then try the restore all of the above is all I get...
