Hello - I'm about to rebuild my website on a nice new windows 2k3 server. I was previously using SQL server 7 but I'd like to use the 2005 edition.
Here's my first question - is the Express edition 2005 good enough to use on my live web server? Are there limits on the amount of connections at any one time?
My second question is this - what's the best way to connect to SQL Server 2005 Express?
I have a SQL Server 2005 database (called BDHSE) in a PC which i call PC1. I have a second PC (PC2) and both are within a network (a WLAN).
What i want is to have access to BDHSE from an application in VB6 (APP1) running in PC2. All the INSERT, DELETE, UPDATE records process is done through APP1.
APP1 ia currently running in PC1 and is to be installed on PC2.
I have these questions:
1. What do i need to install in PC2 since all the INSERT, DELETE, and UPDATE is done using APP1? I guess i only have to install the Microsoft SQL Native Client (with all the prerequisites of course) but i am not sure.
2. In the APP1 made in VB6, do i have to change the connectionstring since i am accesing the database which physically is at PC1 and the APP1 will be used in PC2?
3. Any advice you can give me on doing this will be well received.
Copy an existing production database to a new database on the same server; this will be used for development.
Copy an existing table for backup purposes in preparation for deleting a couple fields from the table (precautionary process really).
I've been out of the database swing if you will for a while, just now getting the opportunity to get my feet wet so to speak. I can use either Enterprise Manager or connec to the database via ODBC and make the copies/deletes there, but I'm looking to do this via EM or SQL command.
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!
Hello all, this is my first post, I have a couple of basic questions regarding the use of SSIS. I have used SSIS for a couple of years for on off table loads but never implemented production jobs with it so please bear with these questions.
1. When making scripts that connect to one or more databases, is there a way to store the userid and password somewhere besides embedded within the package, such as a web.config file, this would make routine password changes much more manageble.
I guess it was only one question but any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am using Merge Replication for my scenario (POS). I have made the publication (articles are a set of tables in DB ABC) and its subscription (in same DB and diff tables xyz1, xyz2). I have scheduled the push subscription as run continuously between Dates(e.g current date to 3 days ahead, just for testing). Now, Can I change this schedule? How can I edit/remove the artilce from the above publication?
A couple questions about SQL Server Reporting Services: 1. Can it be used for other data sources besides SQL Server (Oracle db, XML files, via APIs, etc.)? 2. Can it do ad hoc reporting? I like the "universes" that the SAP Business Objects product allows. Does Reporting Services have something like this, to provide a simplified view that non-technical business users can use to create their own reports? Or is Reporting Services just the equivalent to Crystal Reports?
(I wanted to post this in the general MSDN forum for SQL Server, but I can never log in there for some reason.)
I've added a variable to my package but how do you specify its datatype? Is it purely determined by the type of the value that you pass in the Variables.Add(...) method? I've added task and a sequence container to my package - no problem there. My sequence container is referenced in a variable of type DTSContainer but DTSContainer doesn't have an executables collection. So, how do I add a task into my sequence container?
Greetings! I am writing a proof of concept ASP.net application for my employer and I have run into a couple perplexing issues. First off, In my Page_Load event I have the following code. txOTHrs.Attributes["onBlur"] = "return calculateTotal(this)"; The onblur event handler is coded as follows function calculateTotal(tb) { var regHrs = document.getElementById ("txRegHrs").value; var otHrs = document.getElementById("txOtHrs").value; var rate = document.getElementById("txRate").value; var regAmt = rate * regHrs; var otAmt= rate * ( otHrs * 1.5 ); var total = otAmt + regAmt; document.getElementById("txTotal").value = total; } Everything seems to work fine. The onBlur event is handled and, as I expect the value in the txTotal text box is updated correctly. The problem occurs when I try to access that value in the codebehind page. When ever I look at txTotal.Text in the debugger it is always blank. This has left me scratching my head as I can clearly see a value on the web page. Have I missed some step where I have to notify the server that a value in the control has changed ?
My second question is, I hope a very easy one to answer. In WinForms when I have a dataset I can access the individual rows ( in an untyped dataset ) by speficying dataset.tables["tableName"].Rows[index]. Is there any similar mechanism for accessing the individual rows, and fields in the SqlDataSource object in ASP.net ?
Any help anyone can provide is greatly appreciated!!
Hello, I'm a little confused after installing a service pack for SQL 2005 Express. I see SP 1 & 2 for 2005 but I can't see where the SP stands alone for Express. The title says Express 2005 Service Pack 2. Does that mean that I download that version of Express and SP2 is already built in and I just load the new one over the old one or do I uninstall the old one first? I'm not real bold at this point since it took me a long time to get the Express working.
Another question - I downloaded the DTSWizard.exe 2006 msi package and installed it on my XP Pro machine. The add/remove programs window shows it to be installed but it doesn't show up in the folder it is supposed too. I've done searches for the DTSWizard.exe but it's not there, anywhere. Any ideas what I may be doing wrong? I was able to get the DTSWizard to work on my 2000 Pro machine before going to XP Pro this past week. Thanks for any help you may be able to give me. Riley
So I am fairly new to Express and I have installed it on my development machine; much tio my chagrin it is quite difficult to import data into SQLEXPRESS. I have a 'sa' account setup and I have created a new database and table within that database, however, when I try to import data into that table by setting up a link server to excel I am having some major issues!
I ran this code first to create the linked server...
DECLARE @RC int
DECLARE @server nvarchar(128)
DECLARE @srvproduct nvarchar(128)
DECLARE @provider nvarchar(128)
DECLARE @datasrc nvarchar(4000)
DECLARE @location nvarchar(4000)
DECLARE @provstr nvarchar(4000)
DECLARE @catalog nvarchar(128)
-- Set parameter values
SET @server = 'XLTEST_SP'
SET @srvproduct = 'Excel'
SET @provider = 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0'
SET @datasrc = 'c:Anchor_Hocking blactionlist.xls'
OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "Anchor_Hocking" returned message "Cannot start your application. The workgroup information file is missing or opened exclusively by another user.".
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "Anchor_Hocking" reported an error. Authentication failed.
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "Anchor_Hocking".
The file is not open. I have granted full access rights to all users....I am really frustrated!
Also, how can I get SSIS on this machine with SQLEXPRESS?
Hi all, i have standard edition of sql server, on a server hat doesnt have sql server standard would i be able to connect to it using my connection string. Or does the server has to have standard edition too. Is this same for express edition, and if possible to do this whats the difference between express connection string from standard edition thanks
Will SQL express make my workstation (regular PC on network) act as a server? Or does it just allow VB express / Web Developer Express to write code that will work on an actual My SQL server?
The goal is to make a simple DB that will then be used on a website on a live server which has My SQL on it. I don't need SQL express on that server also do I? MY knowledge about SQL is next to null.
What is the user limit for SQL Express? Is there a free way to convert Access files and import them into SQL Express? Is there any way to take databases offline without have to detach them?
i have some questions about the SQL Express Edition.
I read here, that the maximum of one Database is 4GB. When i create a Webapplication, and i implements, the MembershipProvider, RoleProvider and the ProfilProvider, how many Users can i add to one Database ?
I think that i will have 60 - 100 Field Entrys for Profile of one Person.
Please can everybody help me with this Question? I need this Information, why i dont know that i make my Webapplication with SQL Express Editon, or with Mysql.
Question 1) If you leave the hide advance options checked, which of these 3 options does it choose on the Service Account Screen (I believe it is Network Service).
Local Service
Network Service
Local System
Question 2) If you uncheck the hide advance opitions, so you can access the Service Account Screen, which is the better option, local service or local system for a stand alone computer the the database is only accessed by a program runnin gon that computer
Question 3) I have installed SQL Express 2005 on 3 machines, two of them gave me a default instance of SQLExpress, the third of MSSQLExpress. We need the same instance name on all machines, or we would have to change the connection string on the program each time.
Note: Please refer to my previous message to see the current VS2005 C# code I am using to create my database.
This database will be used for short term operations. In otherwords, a user will create the database, generate a lot of data that will be created using:
SqlBulkCopy bcp;
Then, there will be 'activity'... updates, queries, deletes, etc for a few days and then the user will at a minimum remove all of the data and at some future point in time, will recreate the data and do the process all over.
In otherwords, I am not concerned about backups or transaction logging or recovery or any of these 'normal' issues of using a SQL database.
That said, how do I use SMO to keep the LDF limited in size and as small as possible (assuming I can't turn of the tranaction log to begin with).
2nd question is...I read soething about being able to log ONLY the exection of a Bulk Copy operation. How do I specify that? This is my SQLBulkCopy code.
I got 2 questions to ask: 1. I choose Windows and SQL authentication during setup. Will this have any impact on my connection string in Dot net? 2. If I want to host my db on my computer, what other protocols do I need to enable? Currently I got shared memory on.
1. The title of this post says it all. My app will have a very small footprint to down load. I don't want to user to have to download 50 + MB just to try my little $15 app:-) So
QUESTION 1 - Will SQL Express be in the Vista bits? If so which versions?
2. Once SQLExpress is installed by whatever means, are there rules about how the instance is used? I have no problems playing well with others so I would be more than happy to create my DB in .SQLExpress.
QUESTION 2 - Are there any rules governing who can play in the Express instance? How should dtabases should be named to avoid collisions with the other kids?
3. I'd love to be able to work in in ClickOnce / user never has to have admin password environment.
QUESTION 3 - Besides UAC are there any constraints on writing to a properly installed Express instance that would get in the way of a pure user application from using the basic instance.
4. Right now - because I can't read directions and still don't understand the smoke and mirrors in VS 2005 when it comes to dealing with databases - I have DDL in my program that allows me to create my database from scratch. Not sure that this is the right way to go.
QUESTION 4. What is the best way for an user software to create its database in an instance of SQL Express.
5. SQL Express is yet another thingie that will run in the background that the typical user won't understand and wont' give a hoot about.
QUESTION 5. Can I / should I programmatically worry about whether the service is up and running? If so how do I launch it.
I know this is a lot for a single post, but it all sort of hangs together.
I can choose synchronization direction for articles: a) Bidirectional b) one way
1) Is that possible somehow to replicate the schema only of an article but no synchronization / zero direction :-)/
2) Same question about columns, I should replicate schema only for few columns, but without data synch. These columns are freely updateable at anywhere (publisher and subscribers), but the data changes shouldn't be replicated.
I have made a report in SRS and am not sure of how to do some of the functions I need.
In SQL I can use UPPER to convert to upper case, SRS doesn't seem to like this. The report runs but the line that is to be upper case is missing. If I remove the UPPER word from my query it works fine just displaying in lower case. Am I doing something wrong?
In Excel 2007 (I am converting my report from Excel to SRS) there is a function called NETWORKDAYS (Returns the number of whole working days between start_date and end_date. Working days exclude weekends and any dates identified in holidays. Use NETWORKDAYS to calculate employee benefits that accrue based on the number of days worked during a specific term.) Is there something similar I can use in SRS?
I am using a sqlDataSource to read my query and to put the rows into a gridview. Now I want to read just a couple of rows from my query based on a maximum number, also defined in the table. I have absolutely no idea how to do that..for example: I want to view only the 10 most recent subsciptions into my gridview. The subscriptions are stored into tabel Subscriptions which has values id, userid, date. Table Event has a parameter "maximum subscriptions" (which is 10 in my example) I hope it is clear enough?Thank you in advance!BlueiVeinz
I want to create a filtered view according to some information provides. for example I want to create in form 2 check boxes male and female and when either both or one of them is unchecked, the query filters out the unchecked content from view according to the other filtering conditions.
the exact thing I need is: a text box for string looking (in a specific column). male & female checkboxes. two datetime textboxes to specify a range to focus in.
it is very important to me, so if you misunderstood my question, please contact me.
Does SQLServer go to sleep when it's been idle? How can I connect without an error?
I have SQLExpress on a server. Server Name is SqlExpress. I have 2 DBs on that server... Tuna & Guppy. I'm connecting to the DBs from a remote PC which runs my App... an exe created with Visual Studio 2008, Visual Basic.
If I run my App at say 9:30PM, after the server has been idle for several hours, I get a "Can't open connection to Guppy" error, which is my error message when the connection attempt fails. If I quit & relaunch the app, it connects fine, and will continue connecting fine unless you leave the server idle for serveral hours again.
If I'm developing a 2nd app all evening... which connects to a 2nd DB...Tuna, that activity seems to keep the SqlServer awake and then launching the 1st app at 9:30PM connects to Guppy just fine.
I tried adding a "Connection Timeout=30" to my connection string but that did not help.
My connection code is as follows (note the server's name is SQLExpress):
Dim strConnG As String = "Data Source=SQLEXPRESSSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=Guppy;Integrated Security=True;Connection Timeout=30" Using ConnG As New SqlConnection(strConnG) 'open Guppy connection Try ConnG.Open() Catch ex As Exception MsgBox("Can't open connection to guppy") Return False End Try 'Code that does stuff End using
Can anyone tell me how to fix this so I can connect without error, even if the server has been idle?
I am currently using Management Studio Express to administer remote SQLServer databases I support as a DBA. I notice that I cannot "see" DTS packages on the remote server from Express, but when I login directly to the server (Term Services) and use the local Management Studio (Full?), that I CAN see the DTS packages.
1) What are the other differences between Management Studio Express and Management Studio "Full"?
2) Is it possible to aquire and install (upgrade) on my workstation, to Management Studio "Full" so that I can take advantage of the additional capabilities the "Express" version does not have, in order to manage my remote servers?
I am using a Excel Source to get the data from an excel file to sql server 2005 table. A couple columns are coming in a double precision float, but some values have characters in them, but those values are coming out as null, even though I changed the datatype from float to unicode string. Any inputs on resolving this will be much appreciated.
I'm wondering what command I could issue to see the amount of memory a named instance is using from within the instance itself. We've enabled address extensions (PAE), and task manager no longer shows the correct amount of mem being used by the process. Under perfmon, I've added the object MSSQL$INSTANCENAME:Memory and I'm looking at the Total Server Memory. I'm seeing 4 gigs, when max memory is capped at 2gigs. This must show the server memory and not the instance memory ? Is there some way to see the instance memory ?
Hi,I copied the DATA directory from a backup ghost image to a new SQL6.5 installation and, after fixing a problem with the directory structure(which caused the databases to be marked as "suspect") I was able to workwith it in a normal way.Opening the company database works without problems. The DATAdirectory seems to be correctly copied. The only problem is that I'm unableto see the scheduled tasks. I'm a using predefined database user (not sa).My questions are:1. Is it normal not to see the scheduled tasks when logged asanother user than the sa or the owner of the tasks ? If it isn't, thensomething went wrong copying the DATA directory (even if SQL didn't markthem as suspect). Any advise or comment about this would be really welcome.2. If it's normal not to see the scheduled tasks, Is there any wayto recover the lost sa password ? The docs containing the password werelost around 4 years ago.Any help would be really welcome,
Hi Folks,I am a newbie when it comes to SQL Server 2000 and have a Sybasebackground. How can I reset my sa password in MSSQL like we do it inthe runserver file(-p) in sybase??? Also, can I configure replicationusing the standard edition of MSSQL server????ThanksRegardsdba_sybase2003
