Internalization Of (generic) Application Layer Software To The Database TSQL

Jul 20, 2005

Greetings to all database professionals and laymen,Let us make a bold assumption that we have developed a softwaretool for the SQL Server environment which simply acts as an interfacebetween an end-user in an organization and the database, throughthe exclusive use of stored procedures which are authored by theorganization or by software developers.All development work at the application software level may therebybe conducted within SQL, by the development of TSQL storedprocedures and their coordination across an organization.The question then needs to be asked what are the advantages of thisarrangement and what are the disadvantages. I would appreciateyour comments here, as it is difficult for folk heavily involved (eg: me)in something to obtain objective opinion otherwise.Potentially it is possible to construct an entire database applicationsoftware package using only TSQL stored procedures and thistool. When a database backup is conducted not only the data isbacked up but also all the "program development" suite, in theform of stored procedures (and their scheduling, for example).One of the advantages from my perspective is that this arrangementimplies the possibility that all software external to the database maybe made redundant (except this tool), and along with it, all the otherredundancies of managing application development (life-cycles) withinthe database and then coordinating these changes with softwareexternal the database (particulary loading it to the client environment)You see, I believe that (for example) any and every application writtenin VB, C, etc, etc, etc (external to rdbms) expressly for database software(ie: rdbms software such as SQL Server) involves a redundancy of datadefinitions required ---- once within the VB and once within the db.I would appreciate any feedback on any of the above issues, andwish everyone the compliments of the season.Pete BrownFalls CreekNSWOz~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~EDITOR:BoomerangOutPost: Mountain Man Graphics, Newport Beach, {OZ}Thematic Threading: Publications of Peace and Of Great SoulsWebulous Coordinates: http://www.mountainman.com.auQuoteForTheDay:"Consciousness is never experienced in the plural, only inthe singular. TSQL - Trim String Containing Both Data And Value Into 2 Separate Data Fields

Aug 20, 2007

Hi!
Need help with this one:
I have a column with a string composed by several data. After using REPLACE several times, I get something like the data below, which has (in most of cases) a value and a date.

378 9/05

388 9/05

4/05

1/06 606

1/06 646

76 5/05

100 1/05

118 8/05

129 8/05

9/05 342

05/3 123

1/07

4/06 164
The problem is that I need to get each value alone (to separate columns), in example:
Value Date
378 09/2005
388 09/2005
0 04/2005
...
606 01/2006

and so on...
In addittion you can see that sometimes the Value come first or alone, and sometimes the Date come first or alone.

I will appreciate any good ideas,
Thanks in advance,
Aldo.

SQL 2012 :: Picking Number String Out Of Text String

the part of the string of the form resultid='...',clientip always stays the same except the length of the number can vary.

Need Help With String Manipulation - Splitting 1 String Into Multiple Columns

Sep 11, 2006

Hello All,

I'm a non-programmer and an SQL newbie. I'm trying to create a printer usage report using LogParser and SQL database. I managed to export data from the print server's event log into a table in an SQL2005 database.

There are 3 main columns in the table (PrintJob) - Server (the print server name), TimeWritten (timestamp of each print job), String (eventlog message containing all the info I need). My problem is I need to split the String column which is a varchar(255) delimited by | (pipe). Example:

2|Microsoft Word - รายารรับ.doc|Sukanlaya|HMb1_SD_LJ2420|IP_192.10.1.53|82720|1

The first value is the job number, which I don't need. The second value is the printed document name. The third value is the owner of the printed document. The fourth value is the printer name. The fifth value is the printer port, which I don't need. The sixth value is the size in bytes of the printed document, which I don't need. The seventh value is the number of page(s) printed.

How I can copy data in this table (PrintJob) into another table (PrinterUsage) and split the String column into 4 columns (Document, Owner, Printer, Pages) along with the Server and TimeWritten columns in the destination table?

In Excel, I would use combination of FIND(text_to_be_found, within_text, start_num) and MID(text, start_num, num_char). But CHARINDEX() in T-SQL only starts from the beginning of the string, right? I've been looking at some of the user-defind-function's and I can't find anything like Excel's FIND().

Or if anyone can think of a better "native" way to do this in T-SQL, I've be very grateful for the help or suggestion.

Thanks a bunch in advance,

Chutikorn

TSQL Or SQL CLR?

Aug 9, 2006

Hello Friends,    I am not sure if this is the right place to post this question but if not please suggest me when it can be posted.
I have been thinking of writing Stored procs in SQL CLR/ changing all of my Stored Procs to SQL CLR.
Is there any thing that I need to keep in mind about the size of the sotred proc (like calculation intensive) before I do that? I mean can even change a TSQL stored proc which is  relatively small Stored Proc, that simply said Select * from Customers to SQL CLR? or the SQL CLR does only useful/makes difference with calculation intensive stored procs and big stored procs?
When I talked to our Architects they said every small sized stored proc can be written using SQL CLR and more over forget about the classic TSQL stored procs and get used to write SQL CLR when ever writing any database related stuff.
And also there are so many articles that discussed about the advantages of SQL CLR over the TSQL but I would appreciate if some one could put few bulletted points why do you think SQL CLR is more powerful.
Please advise.Thanks in advance,-L

TSQL Please Help

Jan 8, 2006

Hi
I am creating some dynamic sql by passing variouse parametrs to my Stored Procedure.  One of my Parameters is string has lots of values seperated by a comma to help build an 'IN' statement.
SET @SQL = 'SELECT * FROM areas'SET @p1 = '10,20'If @p1 IS NOT NULLBEGINSET @sSQL = @sSQL + ' WHERE (Areas IN (''' + Replace(@p1,',',''',''') + '''))'END
The above query runs perfecly well in Query Analyser, however when I put it into my ASP.NET application I get an error of "Error converting data type varchar to numeric."
So I think I need to do some sort of casting or Converting but im not sure how to do it.  Or do I need to use a INSTRING?
I did manage to work out a method by using the follwoing
SELECT * FROM Areas WHERE PATINDEX('%,' + CAST(ArType AS VARCHAR) + ',%',',' + @p1 + ',') > 0
But I cant seem to convert the above line into coherent dynamic statement.  My feeble attempt is below but I keep getting errors
SET @sql = @sql + ' WHERE PATINDEX(''%,'' + CAST(ArType AS VARCHAR) + '',%'','','' + @p1 + '','') > 0'
IM strugging to understand all the '''. My TSQL is pretty basic, any help would be much appreciated
Many thanks in advance

Sql Server 7.0

Hi all!
To find out the duplicate entries in a particular column,
I used the following tsql

select pno ,count(pno) from table1 group by pno
having count(pno)>1

But now I have another case where i have to test duplicity as a combination of 3 columns.
ie, for Eg :I have 3 columns with the following values.

colA colB colC
1 2 3===============row 1
1 3 5===============row 2
1 2 3===============row 3
1 4 5===============row 4
8 9 0===============row 5

I want to pick up all the duplicate rows(combo of colA,colB,colC)
duplicate rows here would be row 1 and row 3.

Can somebody give me a clue as to how to achieve this via TSQL.
Any help greatly appreciated.

TSQL Help

Aug 4, 2004

I need help with a query that I want to incorporate into a scheduled DTS within SQL Server 2000. I have a process that brings in records from an Excel file, compares that day's records with any related information already stored in the database, then saves a table of joined records. This leaves me with any matches to the data. I need to filter out all but the most current record, which would be identified by a column named [DATE]. Ex:

Table tblMatchedRecords

M BLah Blah2 [DATE]
1 this that 20040101
2 this them 20040102
3 this that 20040630

In this example, I would like to have the record with [DATE] = 20040630 kept, and the others deleted. All columns do not always have to match exactly. I want to be able to specify which fields that need to match and pull only the latest date.

Make sense? Can anyone offer any suggestions?
