ADO Errors After Changing SP To Use Local Variable

Mar 16, 2007

Changed stored procedure

[dbo].[spLogonName @pNewLogonName varchar(60) AS

SELECT * FROM .dbo.tblUser Where vcLogonName = @pNewLogonName

to

[dbo].[spLogonName @pNewLogonName varchar(60) AS

DECLARE @Local_pNewLogonName varchar(60)

SET @Local_pNewLogonName = @pNewLogonName

SELECT * FROM .dbo.tblUser Where vcLogonName = @Local_pNewLogonName

and started getting this error on the web page.

ADODB.Recordset error '800a0cb3'

Current Recordset does not support updating. This may be a limitation of the provider, or of the selected locktype.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Nothing on the site has changed. If I change the sp back the errors go away. I'm trying to use local variables in all SP to avoid the slowness that can happen when using the parameter varibles.

Changing Schema Name And Making A Local Copy

Jan 24, 2008

I created my database on a remote server.  It now has lots of tables and stored procedures
When I created it, the server created a schema named for me, the user, so all my tables and stored procedures are named like johndoe.tablename.
I would like to rename the schema to something less personal more professional.
Can it be as simple as "ALTER SCHEMA johndoe RENAME professional"?
Also, I would like to create a local copy of the databse, so I can develop offline, without the 2 second delay.
SQL Server Management Studio Express lets me generate scripts, which I have been using to make backups.
Can I use the script file to recreate the database on my local machine?

Thanks

Changing Query To Point To DB Table But Has Errors

Aug 5, 2014

CREATE TABLE SampleData (
CoID nvarchar(255),
Company varchar(255),
FirstName varchar(255),
LastName varchar(255),
JobLevel varchar(255))

[Code] ....

I am trying to make changes to the above query. This query will select 2 records per Company with top down priority on JobLevel. For example: This query will select 2 records from "123 Inc", where they have 2 Managers and 3 Staff contacts. The return results selects (2) managers and no staff records and FirstName and LastName are not duplicate. Then for "A Small Co.", they have 1 VP, 1 Director, 1 Manager and 3 Staff contacts. the return results chooses 1 VP and 1 Director and no managers or staff level people. And so on and so forth for the remainder of the companies.

What I was trying to accomplish is having this same query point to the database tables instead creating a table each and every time. I have this data residing in our database. I tried to make the change so it would point to the database tables but it kept giving me errors. This is way more complex than I thought.

My failed attempt:

Select *
From CampServ.dbo.SampleFakeCustomerData
//This is where I am getting stuck
WITH Priorities(Priority, JobLevel) AS(
SELECT 1, 'VP' UNION ALL
SELECT 2, 'Director' UNION ALL

[Code] ....

Spurious Errors With Package Execution On Local Machine

Jan 5, 2007

I am having strange errors with a package when running locally that has not been an issue before.

The main symtom is that several Data Flow Tasks are either not inserting records on the destination or are only inserting 1 single record before the package errors with the error shown below.

Strangely, the debugger will show X # of records from source and destination, but either no records are actually written or, again, in many cases, only 1 single record is written. This is very strange.

App, System and Security logs yield no indication of security or other errors. All I have to go on is the above anomolies and the error message provided below.

Below is the error message, can someone help me decrypt it?

Many thanks,

Rick

Slowly Changing Dimensions Errors (volume Related?)

Jan 20, 2006

Hello,

We are having issues with SCDs that appear to be volume related. Small dimensions work fine. Pasted below is the last few lines of our package run without any contention (We get different errors at different time with contention referring to buffer or virtual memory). It seems to be calling out the SCD main task but just gives a number and not much of a description.

2) For the errors referring to a buffer ( I can paste them also but did not want to put too much at once); we have the "BufferTempStoragePath" pointing to a drive with lots of space. We have tinkered with the DefaultBufferMax Rows and Size but that seems to just control how big the "batches" are (the row count size changes you see).

Any configuration type things we could try to avoid these errors? Any more detail that can be gleaned from the messages below or the number? This is kind of a show stopper as we are late in the cycle and need larger (at this point only about 600,000 rows) volumes to go through the SCD tasks. The performance seems to be good enough (about 20 minutes). We have tens of millions working fine in fact packages not using SCDs.

Thanks. Geoff

‘default To Local Cursor’ Causes Errors In String-built Declares

Sep 20, 2000

Hi,

I would like to use the dboption ‘default to local cursor’ to true.

But when I set it to true for my database, cursors that are built in a ‘string’ and then executed return an error :

Select @SQL = 'Declare SICCursor cursor For Select SIC1 From ' + @StateTable + ' Where BusinessName = ' + '''' + @BusinessName + '''' + ' Order By PubDate desc'

Exec(@SQL)

Open SICCursor

Openning the cursor returns the error message

“A cursor with the name 'SICCursor' does not exist.”

What am I doing wrong (cursors declared ‘normally’ do not have a problem)?

Thanks,
Judith

Local Variable

May 27, 2004

I am trying to create a procedure or function that will deal with weekly information for staff records.

Rather than declaring 14 local variables for the information, is it possible to declare a local variable as an array? Sorry for using VB terminology - not sure how SQL would describe it.

Changing The Value Of A Variable

Jan 28, 2008

When creating a variable you assign a value to it. Example: D: estA

How do you change the value of a variable once assigned. Example: D: estB

Also is there any way to delete user variables that you do now want. I created variables during development and now I have no need for them.

Problem With A Local Variable

Dec 19, 2001

Hello everybody,

Here I have two tables. Let's call them A and B.

A contains the folowing data: (address of persons)

PostCode Street Number CdeTour
-------- ------ ------ -------
31000 Well. 0025 NULL
31000 Well. 0050 NULL
31000 Wash. 0010 NULL

B contains the folowing data:

PostCode Street FirstEven LastEven FirstOdd LastOdd CdeTour
-------- ------ --------- -------- -------- ------- -------
31000 Well. 0002 0040 0043 0073 100
31000 Well. 0042 0084 0001 0041 200
31000 Wash. 0002 0050 0001 0049 100

* My problem is that I want to update the field A.CdeTour depending on the data present in B.

Let's take the first line from the table A: the number of the street 'well.' is '25', and '25' is odd and between '1' and '41' which meens that I should update my field A.CdeTour should be set to '100' (B.CdeTour).
Let's take another example, so in the second line: the street is still 'well.' but here the number is '50'. '50' is even and between '42' and '84' so the field A.CdeTour should be set to '200' (B.CdeTour).

Here I wrote a query, which doesn't work properly:

DECLARE @Num VARCHAR(4)
UPDATE A
SET @Num = Number, CodeTournee=
CASE WHEN @Num % 2 = 0 THEN(
-- even number of street
SELECT CdeTour
FROM B
WHERE @Num BETWEEN FirstEven AND LastEven
AND A.PostCode = B.PostCode
AND A.Street = B.Street
)ELSE(
-- odd number of street
SELECT CdeTour
FROM B
WHERE @Num BETWEEN FirstOdd AND LastOdd
AND A.PostCode = B.PostCode
AND A.Street = B.Street
)END
FROM A, B

The query runs but the problem is that it doesn't update the field, because it doesn't interpret @num by its value.

In fact, if instead of @num, I hard-code a value it works
... WHERE '0025' BETWEEN FirstOdd AND LastOdd ...

Can someone help me???? I would be very pleased, if someones could give me another way of doing it or a trick in order to avoid this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Transact SQL - Local Variable

Jun 28, 2004

I execute the following in my Query Analyzer:

Declare @Test varchar(8000)

Set @Test='SELECT VIOXX_LastName + '' + VIOXX_FirstName + '' + CONVERT(varchar(50), VIOXX_Number) AS PlaintiffsName, VIOXX_Number
FROM tblPlaintiff WHERE VIOXX_Number NOT IN(SELECT VIOXX_Number FROM tblCase_Plaintiff) OR

WHERE (tblCase.Status = ''InActive'')) ORDER BY VIOXX_Number, VIOXX_LastName'
Select @Test

and get the following result:
SELECT VIOXX_LastName + ' + VIOXX_FirstName + ' + CONVERT(varchar(50), VIOXX_Number) AS PlaintiffsName, VIOXX_Number
FROM tblPlaintiff WHERE VIOXX_Number NOT IN(SELECT VIOXX_Number FROM tblCase_Plaintiff) OR
VIOXX_Number IN (SELECT

the latter part of my original text is not stored in the variable. Is there some limitation on the number of characters for a local variable in transact sql?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Local Variable Slows Down SP (?)

Dec 17, 2007

Hi guys I am sitting and testing som variants of this simple SP, and I have an question that I couldent answer with google or any thread in this forum.

Perhaps I am doing something really easy completly wrong here.

Why does the local variables in the first code segment slow down the overall execution of the procedure?
Dont mind the logic why I have them there are only testing som things out.

If i declare two variables the same way:
DECLARE @v INT
SET @v = 100

When I use it in a WHERE CLAUSE:
...WHERE [V] BETWEEN @v AND @x)
Is there any different then
...WHERE [V] BETWEEN 100 AND 200)

Cant figure this out, why does it hurt the performance so bad? As a C# guy its the same thing ?

Thanks in advance
/Johan

Concatenate Local Variable

declare @testVar varchar(max)

set @testVar = @testVar + ',' + @SomeColName
<cursor loop ends>

print 'Value: ' + @testVar

I can't understand why the @testVar is empty, since the @SomeColName has a value in every iteration.

Variable Value Not Changing As Expected

Jan 15, 2007

I have an Execute SQL Task that selects one column value from one row, so General > ResultSet = Single row. Result Set > Result Name = 0 (the first selected value) and Variable Name = User::objectTypeNbr. The task runs successfully, but after the it runs the value of User::objectTypeNbr is not changed.

User::objectTypeNbr > Data Type = Int32. When I declared the variable Value could not be empty so I set it to 0 arbitraily, assuming it would be overwritten when assigned a new value by the Execute SQL Task, but it remains 0 after the task runs. What am I missing here?

Using TEXT Datatype As Local Variable In SP Or UDF

Mar 12, 2003

I've created a stored procedure that converts an input string in richtext format (input as type TEXT) to plain text. I would like to be able to return this newly converted string, but I need to have some way of storing it in a local variable. My problem is that since I can't use the TEXT datatype as a local variable, I have no way of storing the large amounts of text I converted within the procedure. The VARCHAR(8000) just isn't large enough for my purposes. Anyone have any suggestions on how to go about doing this?

Determining If A Local Variable Exists

Jun 11, 2007

Is there a way to determine if a local variable exists or not?

There's a parameter I often use in code called @guid_batch that is usually declared in the parameter of a stored proc, but when in debugging it would be nice to have it available without having to change code.

Is there something that I could do similar to the following

Code:

IF VARIABLE_ID('@guid_batch') IS NULL
BEGIN
DECLARE @guid_batch UNIQUEIDENTIFIER
SELECT @guid_batch = NEWID()
END

to tell you the truth , what really motivated me to do this , was being able to declare a User-Defined-Function and passing some fields as an String and then use them in a SELECT statement or any other T-Sql codes!!!

Changing The Value Of A Variable With The Script Task

Mar 26, 2008

I want to set the value for a user defined variable with the script task with the intention of using that value as a condition in both of two Precedence Constraints for the purpose of determine which of two different direction the package will go. The problem is I don't know how to reference the User Defined variable in the Script of a Script task, nor how to alter its value.

Can anyone help?

Changing XML Source To A Variable At Runtime

Apr 12, 2007

Hiya guys,

The question:

Can I design data flows with an XML Source pointing to file system xml files, and but run them against variables? I can see the properties at design time (Accessmode=0,1,2; XMLDataVar="User::XMLData), but the XMLSource object doesn't appear to have expressions enabled to change this at runtime, nor do these properties seem to be exposed to configurations.

The scenario:

I have a package that reads through (potentially thousands) of XML files, and having identified the embedded message "type", transforms them via XSLT to an easier XML format (XML Datasource can't cope well with multiple namespaces etc). Then send this the new file off to a type specific dataflow task to send contents to database.

For performance (and other) reasons I'd rather XSLT to a single shared variable and use this variable as the XML source in the data flows (Rather than writing out to the filesystem [via xslt] and immediately reading it back in each time [via datasource]).

But designing the data flow task using a variable as xml source is frustrating for a bunch of reasons - not the least being:

(a) The variable needs to be populated with sample xml data at design time. But this could only ever match one dataflow at a time (fine at run time, but painful at designtime - leading to validation errors popping up all around the place.)

Yes I could have a seperate variable for each xmlsource - but that just makes things more complicated up front and also leaves me with 20+ large, type specific, xml variables floating around at runtime of which only one is ever being used per import - which just doesn't feel right to me.

(b) populating the variable with sample xml at design time is painful due to it being a string - and not accepting hard returns etc that are in text files, design time changes etc)

Using a file XML source at design time is infinitely easier, when I get a design time change - I can just amend the XSLT and run the appropriate task to produce a sample XML file to design against.

Any ideas?

Ta.

Gus.

Store Count Result In A Local Variable

Feb 10, 2000

Hi All,
I need to store the row count from two different servers (one 6.5 and one 7.0)
to compare by doing this:(in T-SQL)

declare @kount1 int, @kount2 int
exec master..xp_cmdshell 'isql -Sserver65 -d dbA -T -Q "select count(*) from tableA",no_output
exec master..xp_cmdshell 'isql -Sserver70 -d dbA -T -Q "select count(*) from tableA",no_output

How can I save the rowcount in @kount1, @kount2 respectively for comparison?
Appreciate your feedback.

Select Into Local Variable Within A IF NOT EXIST Test?

Feb 10, 2004

Hi all,

I'm trying to be slick, but so far am just all wet *snicker*

I've got a table with rows that may or may not exist, and am trying to retrieve a column if an associate row DOES exist.

For argument's sake, my PIndex table looks like:
PID int
CreateDate smalldatetime
CloseID float

Here is my select logic that I thought would save an extra select to load my local variable if the row is actually in the table...

DECLARE @CloseID float

IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT @CloseID = CloseID
FROM PIndex
WHERE ((PID = '14') and
(CreateDate = '2004-02-06')))
SET @CloseID = 100

The SET afterwards is just to initialize the variable if it can't be had from an existing row in the table.

The trouble is, that it fails to compile with the following error:
>>>>> Line 3: Incorrect syntax near '='.

Any insights? My goal is to use a single select to load the value into my local variable if the associated row exists, or to set my local variable to 100 if it doesn't.

Thanks!
Paul

More Selecting Into Local Variable With Dynamic Select...

May 25, 2004

Not wishing to derail the other recent thread on loading a local variable, I've posted this query (hee,hee,hee...I kill me) on a separate thread...though I think I am trying to do something similar...that is to build a dynamic select statement, but return a count of the rows it finds/doesn't find to a local variable...using the (amazingly timely) responses above, I tried this:

Note that the local variables @TargetDate and @TLevel are necessary because they are being passed into the procedure as variables....

DECLARE @SQLCmd varchar(256)
DECLARE @TargetDate smalldatetime
DECLARE @TLevel int
DECLARE @n int
SET @TargetDate = '2004-05-24'
SET @TLevel = 1

SET @SQLCmd = 'SELECT @n = count(*) FROM EventLog WHERE ((CONVERT(varchar(10), [Date], 101) = ''' +
CONVERT(varchar(10), @TargetDate, 101) + ''') AND (MsgLevel = ' +
CONVERT(varchar(3), @TLevel) + '))'
exec (@SQLCmd)
if @n > 0
print 'yep'
else print 'nope'

and, it's TRYING to work...but apparently the local variable @n is not recognized in the execution of the dynamic statement, as this is the output:
Server: Msg 137, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
Must declare the variable '@n'.
nope

Thoughts?
