ASP.NET Report Viewer, Slow Rendering, Image Broken

Jan 29, 2008

Hi,

I have been using the report viewer to render my reports on a webpage. All worked fine for a time and now nothing is working correctly.

I have about ~8 report viewer on one page, all in an individual IFRAME. What happen is, sometimes I'm getting an error from IE (Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage) or the report starts loading (I see the title) but where the chart should be I have an X (broken image) icon.

Sometimes when I click on the image and choose "Display Image" the image will display.

Facts

Reports loads correctly on the report manager site (the Reporting Services webpage)
Once those errors starts appearing, the session seems to act funny and I can't even refresh the webpage (F5)
I have the latest report viewer patch installed
I have the SP2 for SQL Server 2005 installed
Running Windows 2000 Server
Running IIS 6
The website was developped using IIS 5, but was tested on IIS 6 for about 3 weeks and we started to have problems today.
The reports are linked with Analysis Services to get the data from cubes.
I'm really out of ideas right now. Maybe I should just restart the IIS server, but the thing is live and I can't do it right now. However, if I need to restart it, will the problem occurs another time? Will it become a solution to restart the server?

I already restarted Reporting Services and nothing has changed.

Thanks

Either Rendering Tiff Images In SRS Report Viewer Or Converting Tiff To Jpg Or Gif And Then Rendering

Jun 19, 2007

First of all, this is not in reference to using SRS (SQL Reporting Services) to render a report and then use one of the extensions to render the complete report as a pdf, tiff, excel etc. We have an opportunity to render a list of claims and then embed the supporting docs for each of the claims within the report. We don't have an issue referencing jpg and gif images via URLs and then rendering them within the report after the grid information. We do have an issue rendering tiff images within the report.

You can insert an image object into SRS at design time and have it render and you can convert a complete report to a tiff image but I cannot find a way to be able to render a tiff image when running the report. All you get is the red "x".

My question is has anyone encountered the same issue and, if so, what did you do to resolve the issue?

Thank you,

J Z

SSRS Report Rendering Different In VS2005 And In Report Viewer Via URL Access

Apr 17, 2008

Hello,
I'm using Reporting Services to render a text (stored in sql as varchar(max)). The text is all plain text, with some lines having trailing spaces.

Source text file i've imported to SQL via SSIS:
CLIENT: 10055
STATEMENT 2007
DATE:1002993
THIS IS THE OTHER STATEMENT
COLUMN1 COLUMN2 COLUMN 3
TRY THIS

*Note the trailing spaces on the line before 'STATEMENT 2007'.

I've designed a report using the Report Project in VS2005 to retrieve this text via a stored procedure. When I test the report using the 'Preview' tab in the IDE, it looks good
CLIENT: 10055
STATEMENT 2007
DATE:1002993
THIS IS THE OTHER STATEMENT
COLUMN1 COLUMN2 COLUMN 3
TRY THIS

But when I deploy the report and run it using URL Access:

CLIENT: 10055
STATEMENT 2007
DATE:1002993

THIS IS THE OTHER STATEMENT

COLUMN1 COLUMN2 COLUMN 3
TRY THIS

On all lines with trailing spaces, they (the trailing spaces) have been removed. This is affecting my formatting of some reports and statements. We really want to use the report viewer as it has built in paging, print and export capabilities.

Why does it look okay in VS2005 but different in Report Viewer via URL Access and Report Manager?

Note: When I export as PDF, it looks okay.

The stored procedure I use to return the data is a CLR Hosted assembly as below:

Code Snippet
Partial Public Class StoredProcedures
<Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlProcedure()> _

Public Shared Sub GetPagedDocument(ByVal inText As SqlString)
Dim dr As SqlDataReader
Dim row As New SqlDataRecord(New SqlMetaData("RowText", SqlDbType.Text))
Dim cmd As New SqlCommand("select cast(doc as varchar(max)) as 'DOCTEXT' from testdoc WHERE id='" + inText + "'")
Dim cn As New SqlConnection("context connection=true")
cn.Open()
cmd.Connection = cn
SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsStart(row) 'initialise the resultset to be returned
dr = cmd.ExecuteReader
'If no records in result set, return.
If Not dr.HasRows Then

row.SetString(0, "There is no document to display or you do not have permission to view the document.")
SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsRow(row)
SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsEnd()
' SqlContext.Pipe.Send("There is no document to display.")
Return
End If
'Read rows in the result set
dr.Read()

'Get the entire text
Dim docText As String = dr.Item("DOCTEXT")
'debug
row.SetString(0, docText)
SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsRow(row)
SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsEnd()
Return
'end debug

End Sub
End Class

Any help will be appreciated.

Charts Slow Report Rendering To A Crawl

Aug 23, 2006

I've searched the forums on this issue, haven't really found the answer.

I have several nifty little sales reports which crunch a ton of data quite efficiently and render in just a few seconds in Report Manager. I've pushed as much of the data processing back to the server as possible, use a stored procedure (with parameters) in a shared datasource, don't return unneccessary data, all that. It works great.

When I first developed the reports, I continued generating my charts (which use the same data as the reports, just grouped differently) in Excel and pasting them in as images. Now I want to stop that nonsense and use the SSRS charts. I fooled around with the charting function and got a reasonable facimile of my Excel charts, two per report, which use their own separate stored procedures and the same shared datasource.

Now, reports that used to render in 5-8 seconds may take 1-5 MINUTES. Help! It's definitely the charts--taking them back out fixes the problem.

I have complete control over the datasources--would it make more sense to use non-shared sources, or to create totally separate shared sources? I saw a post that recommended "making data calls non-synchronous," but I have no idea how to do that.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Report Viewer And Image Caching

Nov 22, 2007

Hi,

I'm having some troubles getting a chart drillthrough to work correctly in the MS Report Viewer. I'm using VB.NET 2.0 in a WebApplication.

Here's what happening:

I build the report with drillthrough functionnality in a chart. When I preview it, or look at it on the report web interface (http://localhost/Reports) it works perfectly. However, once I open it in my WebApplication with the MS' ReportViewer it starts to get ugly.

The report loads the first drillpath correctly. Once I click on a bar to drill to the next drillpath, the report seems to load the data, but the image doesn't represent that as it is the old one. I can tell that the correct data is loaded since the imagemap has changed when I mouseover the chart (links are not on bars, but where they are supposed to be on the second image).

In an attempt to be clearer, here's a step by step:

1- Create the report and the drillthrough functionnality.
2- Preview it in the report builder, works perfectly.
3- Test it in the report manager (http://localhost/Reports), works perfectly.

---
4- Load it in the MS' ReportViewer in my WebApplication, the first image in the drillpath loads correctly.
5- Click on the chart to get to the next drillpath, report reload with what seems to be the good data, but the image isn't refreshed.

So, is it possible to force an image to be reloaded with Reporting Services?

Thanks

Our Logo Image Appears In Designer But Not In Report Viewer

Dec 25, 2007

I created a virtual directory in IIS that points to a folder on c: where my images reside. I use a URL to reference one of those images in my report heading. It appears as it should in designer's preview tab but only as a big red X in Report Viewer from my browser.

Directory security on the virtual directory is set to Integrated Windows.

Right clicking on red x in IE7>properties shows a path to report server instead of the special virtual directory I created.

RDL snippet shows:
<PageHeader>
<PrintOnFirstPage>true</PrintOnFirstPage>
<ReportItems>
<Image Name="image1">
<Sizing>AutoSize</Sizing>
<Top>0.125in</Top>
<Width>2.07292in</Width>
<MIMEType />
<Source>External</Source>
<Style />
<ZIndex>3</ZIndex>
<Left>0.25in</Left>
<Height>0.32292in</Height>
<Value>http://localhost/vddirectoryname/filename.BMP</Value>
</Image>

Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?

External Image Appears Broken When Using Interactive Sort

Jun 15, 2007

We have a logo image in our report that is an external image that references a url similiar to: http://www.myserver.com/images/logo.gif.

In the same report we have a table with interactive sorting set on several column headings.

When we initially view the report the external logo image appears perfectly and the data in the table looks fine.

If we click on a column heading to sort the column then the logo image appears as a broken link as soon as the page refreshes.

Has anyone had a similiar experience with external images appearing normally and then appearing as broken when sorting a table?

We have configured the Execution Account and it is working normally and so do the reports except when we try to sort.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Inserting Image Data Fails With Connection Broken (SQL Server 2000 And SQL Native Client)

May 28, 2008

Dear all,

we have tables with many image columns. We fill these image columns via ODBC and SQLPutData as described in MSDN etc (using SQL_LEN_DATA_AT_EXEC(...), calling SQLParamData and sending the data in chunks of 4096 bytes when receiving SQL_NEED_DATA).

The SQLPutData call fails under the following conditions with sqlstate 08S01

- The database resides on SQL Server 2000
- The driver is SQL Native Client
- The table consists e.g. of one Identity column (key column) and nine image columns
- The data to be inserted are nine blocks of data with the following byte size:

1: 6781262
2: 119454

3: 269
4: 7611

5: 120054

6: 269

7: 8172

8: 120054

9: 269
The content of the data does not matter, (it happens also if only zero bytes are written), nor does the data origin (file or memory).

All data blocks including no 7 are inserted. If the first chunk of data block 8 should be written with SQLPutData the function fails and the connection is broken. There are errors such as "broken pipe" or "I/O error" depending on the used network protocol.

If data no 7 consists of 8173 bytes instead of 8172 all works again.
(Changing the 4096 chunk size length does not help)

Has anybody encountered this or a similar phenomenon?

Thank you

Eartha

Image Size When Rendering In EMF Output Format

Feb 8, 2007

Hello folks,

A while back I wrote a .NET assembly with a COM wrapper to provide an interface between Report Services and legacy MS Access applications. Basically, it returns the byte arrays from the .render method (output format emf) to be written into an Access image control.

This worked flawlessly on any 8.5"x11" RS report we threw at it on the first two Report Services I tried it against. When we set up a third Report Service at another facility, the same reports were coming out with the physical dimension metrics on the emf as10"x13", so the Access version of the report is clipped significantly on the edges.

I trapped the output into a System.Drawing.Image object in the .NET assembly and put a watch on it. The two servers that work as I expected show HorizontalResolution and VerticalResolution as 96.0946, while the one that doesn't has these values as 81.2799. The PhysicalDimension property shows 21542.3672 x 27939.4316 on the working servers and 25531.25 x 33031.25 Otherwise, the properties of the images seem to be identical. The PhysicalDimension values I see are completely consistent with the size units of 0.01 mm, as the the emf documentation indicates. The resolution of 96 is consistent with the "Windows default" values of 96 dpi. The ratio of the resolutions is correct for an 85% scaling factor for the "misbehaving" Report Service.

I have not been able to find any reason for the differences between the Report Services, and I have not been able to figure out how to control it. I tried setting DpiX and DpiY as 96 in the DeviceInfo for the render call with no change in the behavior of either server.

Can anybody enlighten me on what is happening and what I need to do to get consistent behavior between the servers? Or why the DpiX and DpiY settings for the emf rendering extension don't seem to work?

Thanks,

Reporting Services :: Image In SSRS In PNG Format - PDF Rendering

Nov 4, 2015

I have a image in SSRS which is of PNG in format. when I preview the image it is coming as expected but if I  export that to PDF the image is having the black color back ground. One more point to be noted here is my actual image file is having a small shading in it which is not visible properly, but the same back ground is coming with full black color line in the PDF form.

Another issue is : I have 3 sub reports in my SSRS report. In the preview I can see the data is coming in order of sub reports but if I export it to PDF the second sub-report data is coming at the end of the report and first and 3rd sub reports are fine. But If I have only one record for 2nd sub-report the order is same in both the Preview page as well as in the PDF format.

External Image Not Rendering When Generated From Aspx Page

Jan 14, 2007

I'm having problems displaying images generated by aspx pages from a report. It works fine if I point the external value to a static image on the web. I can paste the url to the page into IE and it generates the image with no issues. What am I doing wrong? I used a textbox to verify that the correct url is being generated (= Parameters!MYPROJECT_URL.Value & Parameters!MYPROJECT_NO.Value).

Are there any issues with generating external images with reporting services?

I have installed SP1 for MS 2005...shouldn't I see some sort of visual confirmation in Management studio when I click the Help Menu->about? saying the version is MS SQL Server 2005? how do I verify that the upgrade was successful?

Slow Performance When Rendering Pages In SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services

Jul 3, 2007

I have designed a fairly simple report in report designer that uses an analysis services cube as its input, and a basic matrix object as the primary design component. Cube performance either via object browser in Analysis Services or via connection from Excel is great. It does exactly what you build a cube for, i.e. it builds aggregations you can get to quickly. However rendering from a report designer report within Report Manager is a different story.

Even though this report is being rendered from an execution snapshot, it is painfully slow at opening and closing different levels of drill down. The report does have six levels of drill down, which I am sure is a factor. If I use a smaller dataset, performance does become more acceptable. However, I don't consider the requirements of my report to be all that extraordinary.

My conclusion thus far is that larger data sets with many possible page renderings are not the best candidates for HTML rendered reports. In this case Microsoft's cube analysis add-in to Excel might be a better choice. Thoughts and feedback on either how to improve the rendering speed or other presentation alternatives that would perform better would all be welcome.

SoapException While Rendering Report Through WebService - Error During Processing Of ‘ReportParameterTime’ Report Parameter

May 5, 2008

I am extracting RS reports through a WebService:
report = execService.Render("EXCEL", null, out extension, out mimeType, out encoding, out warnings, out streamIds);

Some works fine but some are generating the following SoapException:

Error during processing of €˜ReportParameterTime€™ report parameter. ---> Error during processing of €˜ReportParameterTime€™ report parameter. ---> Error during processing of €˜ReportParameterTime€™ report parameter.
I set required parameters to their default values. In this specific report I have two required parameters:
1: ReportParameterTime, String
2: ReportParameter1, String

I set them to their default values (ReportParameterTime to "[Czas].[Kalendarzowy].[Rok].&[2007]" - means
Time Calendar Year 2007) but I am getting the exception above. I set parameters using this code:

execService.SetExecutionParameters(parameterValues.ToArray(), CultureInfo.CurrentCulture.Name);

Where parameterValues is a List<ReportExecution2005.ParameterValue>.

When I am using Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportViewer the report is generated without
any problems. I can see one parameter to choose: "Kalendarzowy" (means adj. Calendar) and can
select years, the default value is "2007".

What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this error ? Does anybody know ?

Regards,
Daniel

Report Viewer Jump To Issues With Relative Intra-report URLs

Dec 26, 2007

Hello,

Very strange phenomenon with the "Jump to report:" Hyerlink Actions when I deployed my reports to the production servers:

The Actions no longer funcioned properly when attempting to go to one report to another. Sometimes, the same report would come up and sometimes a different report. It appeared that whatever mechanism Report Server uses to construct the proper URL when using "Jump to report:" is unreliable(or the URL is not being honored by the web-server).

All this is happening under the Report Viewer control. I have had to do a painful fix of manually constructing the entire absolute URL and including the reportviewer control in the url.

Any way to get back relative Jump to report: URL's?

Slow Query With Table Containing Image

Sep 25, 2007

Hi,

I have a table defined as such:
PosterArtId int no 4 10 0 no (n/a) (n/a) NULL
Graphic image no 16 yes (n/a) (n/a) NULL
GraphicFilename varchar no 50 no no no SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS

I have a Stored Procedure defined in the database that queries this table (joins with some other tables) that takes about 1 1/2 minutes to return results (running directly in query analyzer). The table itself has 8900 records and the resulting stored procedure returns 33 rows.

I have backed up this database and restored it to another database on a different machine also running SQL Server 2000. When I run the same stored procedure on this 2nd database (note the contents of the database and this table are exactly the same), it runs very quickly - in about 2 seconds.

I'm trying to figure out what is causing the query to run so slow on the original database, which is our production database server (note that none of the other queries seem to be running extra slow on this machine, just this particular one).

I've since been reading up on storing images in the database and I don't think the images are stored "text in row" - I ran the command: €œSELECT OBJECTPROPERTY(OBJECT_ID('tblPosterArt'),'TableTextInRowLimit')€? and got a 0 return value.

My ultimate goal is to figure out:
1) why the timing is so different on the two databases even though the have the same data
2) is there something we can do to speed up the results on our production server

For the first goal, I'm heading down the path that something in the database backup/restore did not recreate the btree storage of the image data in the same manner. Would this be correct? If not, is there some kind of analysis that I can do that will tell me some useful information?

I've run the Stored Procedure for both databases in query analyzer with the "show execution plan", "trace", and "statistics" turned on. In the Execution Plan of the production database I see a significant amount of time in three areas: Nested Loops/Left Semi Join, Clustered Index Scan, and Clustered Index Seek. But being as I'm not a dba (nor do we have one on staff), I'm not sure how to interpret this data. I keep wanting to point to some sort of environment issue since the data is the same between the two machines.

I suppose there is nothing to do about the 2nd goal without knowing why the query on the one machine is taking so long. Any thoughts on how to get more information here?

Thanks,
Beth

Total data is aprox10 kb i all row all together.CREATE TABLE [dbo].[BIOMETRICPROFILE] ([BIOMETRICPROFILEID] [bigint] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,[FINGERPRINTTEMPLATE1] [image] NOT NULL ,[FINGERPRINTTEMPLATE2] [image] NOT NULL ,[FINGERPRINTTEMPLATE3] [image] NOT NULL ,[FINGERPRINTTEMPLATE4] [image] NOT NULL ,[FINGERPRINTTEMPLATE5] [image] NOT NULL ,[FINGERPRINTTEMPLATE6] [image] NOT NULL ,[TYPE] [nvarchar] (50) COLLATE Danish_Norwegian_CI_AS NOT NULL) ON [PRIMARY] TEXTIMAGE_ON [PRIMARY]GOselect * from BIOMETRICPROFILE takes ~4 seconds (!) to execute thourgh Queryanalyzer. Alle other tables has no performance problems.We have a SQL 2005 express instalation on the same server. If we restore abackup from the sql 2000 database the query takes aprox ~ 15 ms.What isgoing on here?Has SQL 2000 problems with image fields? or how can we find the problem?RegardsAnders

Report Rendering (II)

Apr 30, 2007

Hi,

I have been using the following code, (thanks to Shyam), to display address fields. This works great when using preview in BIDS, but the address shows on one continious line when the report is redered in Reporting Services.

=First(Fields!Name.Value) & IIf(First(Fields!Address1.Value) <> "", Chr(10) & Chr(13) & First(Fields!Address1.Value), "") &
IIf(First(Fields!Address2.Value) <> "", Chr(10) & Chr(13) & First(Fields!Address2.Value), "") &
IIf(First(Fields!Address3.Value) <> "", Chr(10) & Chr(13) & First(Fields!Address3.Value), "") &
IIf(First(Fields!Town.Value) <> "", Chr(10) & Chr(13) & First(Fields!Town.Value), "") &
IIf(First(Fields!County.Value) <> "", Chr(10) & Chr(13) & First(Fields!County.Value), "") &
IIf(First(Fields!Post_Code.Value) <> "", Chr(10) & Chr(13) & First(Fields!Post_Code.Value),

Any one any ideas?

Thanks

Report Viewer Is Printing A Cached Report

Mar 6, 2007

Hi All

I have a reporting viewer in a windows form that behaves very strange. When I open the form and run the report it shows up nicely in the report viewer. If I print the report it only prints one page. When i print the report a second time the whole report is printed. Next I'll change the report parameters and run the report, then it shows up nicely in the viewer, but when I print the report the first report is printed.

Does anyone know what to do with this problem?

Thanks in advance
