I use the following SQL statements to create a link server. RemoteServerName is an SQL2000 and I am executing this in another machine which is SQL2005.

Though the link server is created successfully, I am not able to se the tables under it so could not query anything.

----

Upgraded SQL2000 To SQL2005, SQL2005 VERY Slow

Dec 27, 2005

I just upgraded my SQL 2000 server to SQL2005. I forked out all that money, and now it takes 4~5 seconds for a webpage to load. You can see for yourself. It's pathetic. When I ran SQL2000, i was getting instant results on any webpage. I can't find any tool to optimize the tables or databases. And when I used caused SQL Server to use 100% cpu and 500+MB of ram. I can't have this. Can anyone give me some tips as to why SQL 2005 is so slow?

Restoring A SQL2000 Database To SQL2005 On A New Server

Apr 23, 2008

If I restore a SQL 2000 DB into 2005 it upgrades it for me.
When restoring a DB to a new server/instance of SQL, in SQL 2000 I had to carry out the sp_changedbowner procedure after the restore was complete.
Is the equivalent procedure when restoring a SQL 2000 DB to 2005 to go to the schema for the restored database, find the schema with the name of the SQL 2000 db owner and change the schema owner?
OR alternatively run the following query where mark is the db owner in 2000 and lladmin in the new user in 2005 ;

ALTER AUTHORIZATION ON SCHEMA::mark TO lladmin;

Problem Connecting SQL2005 Client To SQL2000 Server

Jan 22, 2008

OK, I'm stumped and could do with some help. I have a laptop running Vista (64bit) with the SQL 2005 client tools. At home, I have SQL Server 2000 running on Windows Server 2003. I cannot get the SQL 2005 to talk to the SQL Server 2000. At work, we have SQL 2000 running on NT 5.0 and it connects fine. I also have a second laptop with SQL 2000 client tools running on XP SP2 which conects fine to the SQL 2000 instance on the 2003 box.

The vista laptop talks to the 2003 server, so it's not simpy that there is no connection. Any ideas why I keep getting an error stating that the Server might not be accepting remote connections every time I try to connect the Vista machine to the SQL 2000 server? I can't connect either from the SQL management tool, nor via ODBC.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Linked Server SQL2000 SP

Feb 16, 2005

Brand new to linked servers and trying some stuff. I've successfully linked a server using EM (both are sql2000). I can successfully run a select statement through QA. I'm trying to test a locally-stored procedure and am having a bit of trouble. Please, no arguements about best method - I have no choice. Cannot create stored procs on remote machine.

If I run this through QA, I get an immediate return set: select * from linkedName.dbName.dbo.tblName

If I try to create a test stored proc like the following, I get: Error 7405: Heterogeneous queries require the ANSI_Nulls and ANSI_WARNINGS options to be set for the connection. This ensure consistent query semantics. Enable these options and thenreissue your query. When I looked it up in BOL, I thought I was setting these items?

CREATE PROCEDURE zp_countyListing AS
SET ANSI_WARNINGS ON
SET ANSI_NULLS ON

select * from linkedName.db.dbo.tblName

Thanks for the assistance.

SQL2000 Linked Server To DB2

Mar 9, 2004

I’ve got a linked server created in SQL2000 to DB2.

I’m using Client Access ODBC Drivers, and Microsoft OLE DB provider for ODBC Drivers.

I have views created against the linked server as

ALTER VIEW BLBATDT AS
SELECT * FROM LURCH_PARADB.S102D4LM.PARADB.BLBATDT

All seem(ED) to be working fine until I ran into this issue.

Using the view
If I select count(*) from BLBATDT returned value 786
If I select * from BLBATDT I get 76 rows returned

If I select from BLBATDT where field = value I get nothing, when in fact there is a value I specified.

I modified the view creation to

Create view as
select * from openquery(LURCH_PARADB,
'select *
from S102D4LM.PARADB.BLHDR')

Performed the above simple selects, (same results)

I modified the view creation to
Create view as
select * from openquery(LURCH_PARADB,
'select field_list_of_all_fields_in_the_table
from S102D4LM.PARADB.BLHDR')

Same results

However if I modified the view creation to
Create view as
select * from openquery(LURCH_PARADB,
'select field1, field2
from S102D4LM.PARADB.BLHDR')

And limit the fields selected to a small subset, everything works fine.

I think the issue may be that the parent tables are very wide in total byte count and the number of fields is also large.
This particular tables has 120 fields with a total record length of over a 1000 bytes.

If this is the case, how do I resolve this?

Has anyone ran into this before?

Linked Server: Works Local, But Not Remote

Nov 14, 2007

I have created a linked server (to an AS/400) via MSDASQL. It works fine when I execute queries locally (i.e. from Management Studio running on the SQL 2005 server).

However, when I execute a query from a remote machine I get an error (see below for the exact message).

I know the ODBC connection is between the SQL server and the AS/400, and that the remote client does not have connectivity to the AS/400. But shouldn't the SQL server be able to pass the query through to the linked server even if the query is initiated from a remote machine?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can resolve this problem so that queries against the linked server can be executed from remote machines?

Errors:

OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "MERCURY" returned message "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed".

OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "MERCURY" returned message "[IBM][iSeries Access ODBC Driver]Key value in connection string too long.".

Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "MERCURY".

Environment: SQL 2005, Standard Edition SP2

Linked Server Errors After Failover But Works When It Is Failed Back

Feb 15, 2008

We are using SQL Server 2005 (9.0.3054 on Windows 2003 RC2 SP2 with clustering two instances. We are running an instance on both boxes.
I have 2 linked servers to the same server on the first box (SQL1C) that use different SQL Logins to connect to the same box but to different databases. One uses the name of the server and one uses the name of the server with a 2 at the end of it. (servername and servername2). The second linked server was added recently and is used very frequently by the new application. The other thing is there is a server with the name servername2. They are SQL boxes but I am not sure what version or what they are running on. If it turns out to be important, I will ask.

Here's what is happening:
When we fail over to the second box, up until recently, we had no problems. All linked servers worked well. But since we have added this new linked server, when we fail over, the linked server no longer works and we get an error like from the Cold Fusion application:

[Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

I got a similar error in EMS, but did not copy it to save it. Since this is a production server, I can't really just try things.

We checked to make sure all IPs from box1 and box2 are allowed access to the server and they are not using IP blocking for inside the university domain.

There are no errors in the SQL Logs. I checked the application logs and found no errors for the linked server. The only error I could find and I didn't think it was related but I will include it was this:

Closed event notification conversation endpoint with handle '{4F54167A-F3D0-DC11-97FE-000E0CB2D7CA}', due to the following error: '<?xml version="1.0"?><Error xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/Error"><Code>-8470</Code><Description>Remote service has been dropped.</Description></Error>'.

Any ideas? One of our pplications goes down when the cluster fails over now. Help PLEASE!

Thanks,
Linda

Possible In SQL2000 - Not In SQL2005 :(

Jan 4, 2008

Hello all

I have an odd problem with sql 2005. I'm a long time sql 2000 user trying to migrate to 2005. My company uses CSVs to import data from our clients db into our SQL db. In 2000 I just create a txt source and pick whichever CSV and transform to a temp sql table. This has always worked just fine with no problems.

So we have a new server with sql 2005 installed. I go through the "migrate dts 2000" wizard and pull in all my DTSs from sql 2000. The first thing I see that needs to be fixed is "connection 1" which is my CSV connection manager along with the flat file source.

I went through both the connection and the flat file source and tried to copy exactly what I do in sql 2000. When I preview the data or even execute this package I get bad data.

Here is what my CSV looks like:
"ACCT ","ACCOUNT DESCRIPTION ","ACCT TYPE","SCH NO","SC"
"9999Z","Balance By Source Offset",9
"87B","UTILITIES(NOT PHONE)U-C",7
72,"ADM-LEGAL/AUDIT/COLL EXP",7
315,"SALES TAX - VEHICLES LOCAL 1",3
"90A","INTEREST(NON FPLAN/MORT)/N-C",7
73,"MEALS & ENTERTAINMENT-ALL",7
"210A","REBATES RECEIVABLE",2,17,4
"5A@","# OF EXT WARR SALES-UC",10
"51N","N/C-VEHICLE INV MAINTENANCE",7
"87D","UTILITIES(NOT PHONE)SVC",7
"90B","INTEREST(NON FPLAN/MORT)U-C",7
317,"ACCRUED OTHER",3,75,4

This is what it looks like when I preview it inside the flat file connection manager:
ACCT ACCT DESC ACCT TYPE SCH NO SCTYPE
9999z blance by source... 9– – "87B" UTILITIES(NO... 7

So it is basically putting two rows of csv data into one row of SQL data. Now I realize my CSV isn't in the correct format because it doesn't have the extra commas at the end of a row IF the columns are null. It seems that 2005 doesn't recognize the carriage return/line feed. It puts the actual ascii characters in the preview. Once I execute the package it changes the ascii characters into blank spaces. My big issue is, why did this work just fine in 2000 but I can't get clean data in 2005? I'm completely clueless now, I have no idea where to go with this. Its impossible to change the output of the CSVs I get. There is literally no other options. I kinda get what I get with them. Why is this happening?

I'm developing some application and I need to test both server.

It has worked fine about 1 year, but last month i got error message.

When i'm trying to connect to SQL2005 from my application or import data from Excel, i get error message:
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Invalid Connection()).]Invalid connection.

I can access SQL2005 with Management Studio or cmd line (sqlcmd). But not with Excel (or with my application).

MSDE2000 works fine, i haven't any problems.

Last weekend I have reinstalled my WinXP and also MSDE2000, SQL2005 Express.
Worked fine, but when turn on automatic updates ON and afterwards installed latest updates, the problem is here again...

Any idea to solve this problem?

Upgrading From Sql2000 32 Bit To Sql2005 64 Bit

Hi,

Is there any difficulties I should be aware of? I'm not running DTS and I think my DB is relatively simple. I've googled and not found anything that sticks out as a problem.

We are getting a new server because we want more RAM, and better upgrade options. The hosting company recommended 64bit SQL, so I am thinking of following their recommendations.

I am upgrading from a 2 x p4 2.8ghz xeons to 1 x Intel 5130 dual core 64 bit chip. I also will be going from 2 gigs to 4 gigs of RAM.

Any thoughts I would love to hear.
