Access MSDE Instance Remotely
Nov 3, 2004
I have a named instance of MSDE running on my windows 2k3 web server. I can connect just fine using ODBC to that DB whailst I am on the server.
I would like to be able to create an ODBC connection from my local machine (running Windows XP pro) to the MSDE database on my server but I can't get it going.
I have heard that I need to edit the registry but a Google search warns that this could be a vulnerability...
How do I do it without compromising the security of my web server?
TIA

Good Day,
I am creating a SQL Named instance as a testing environment. This instance is on the same physical box as my Development environment, both are SQL 2005 standard edition. From the server in Management Studio, I can load, and interact with both instances. From a remote connection (e.g., my pc) I cannot access the named instance. I am getting the following:
Connect to Server
X Cannot connect to <server><named instance>
Additional Information
An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Sever 2006, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server)
I have checked, and rechecked the server settings for this named instance, and remote connections are set to "allow" I have enabled TCPIP and Named Pipes prototocals, and have ensured that my firewall is allowing the "listenting port" for the named instance, and have even tried turning off my XP firewall during testing.
I am sure that I have probably missed something, and have searched the community but only have been able to find resolutions that I have already tried. Is there more?
Thanks in advance for any help and guidance you can provide.

Hi
I just installed MSDE over my Windows 2003 box and facing an small problem.
I installed it with SQL security mode and also set a password for user "sa".
Everything looks just fine using "osql" as it uses local address.
But I can't connect to my server from another computer using VS.NET Server Explorer.
It seems as MSDE is set to reject connections from outside by default.
My question is how to enable it so I can connect using my "sa" account.
Appreciate your help in advance.

"A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)"
I went to check that remote connectiona nd SQL browsing is on or not but both were on . any ideas why this is happening and why the name is not coming in list of Server.

I had a big problem on connecting sqlserver remotely from other machines on the network .....
From any computer in the network i wanna to register the instance of the sqlserver from the enterprise manager ..... the server instance doesn't appear within the available sqlserver list (the servername which equal to my machine is the only one that appear) ..... when i manualy write the servernamealias manually and i choose the connection type and then i write sqlserver username and password and then finish he give a message to me that access denied or sql server doesn't exist ... !!
by the way from the local machine i registered the local instance of sqlserver successfully and successfully i access the Databases .....
To be noted:
I previously uninstalled this alias and i then i reinstalled it again with the same name and i attached the previously exists Databes.
in the same time i installed on the same machine sqlserver 2005 connectivity clients not the server itself.

Hi,
I am trying to remotely connect to a SQL 2005 Instance on a cluster. I see the following error:
No retry on exception System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
I have enabled TCP/IP , Named Pipes on the node. I have turned off IPSec on the clients as well. I am using the following connection string : "Integrated Security=SSPI;server=servernameinstancename;Pooling=false;database=TrialDB"
Is there something I am missing?
Any pointers will be appreiciated.
thanks.

Hi all,
WSUS is installed on my windows 2003 server. During the install, parameter DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS was not specified, and so no remote connection was possible.
I used SVRNETCN.exe to enable TCP/IP remote connection on port 1433. However it seems not to work.
FROM THE SERVER :
osql -E -S MYSERVERWSUS works fine but
osql -E -S 127.0.0.1WSUS doesn't work, i get the famous error
[DBNETLIB]Serveur SQL spécifié non trouvé.
[DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).
If i user "osql -L" command, my instance doesn't appear in the list
FROM A CLIENT COMPUTER
osql -E -S MYSERVERWSUS and
osql -E -S MY_SERVER_IPWSUS don't work, i get the same error
I've tried tried to understand for hours, and i'm lost. I thought there may be a problem between SQL and 2003, and read SQL sp3a was required. I ran
select @@version from osql and got result
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.881 (Intel X86)
8.00.881 is not referenced in ms support as a patched version number !!!!!
Can anyone help me please ?

Someone please help me before I loose all of my hair  !!!
I have two machines, a Windows Server 2003 machine running an SQL Server Standard Edition database instance and client tools (Enterprize Manager etc.), and a workstation PC running Windows XP SP2 which has just the SQL Server client tools (not an actual DB instance).
I'm trying to use the Enterprize Manager client tool on my WinXP machine to remotely connect to the server instance on the server PC (via 'New SQL Server Registration' option). Everytime I do this I get the following error message:
Login failed for user 'sa'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server Connection.
Now I've tried using different usernames and passwords. I have login details for my SQL Server set to use Windows Login rather then SQL Server login, so I tried remotely connecting with the username and password for the server PC, tried 'sa' with server password, even tried setting up a new user on the server and logging in from the client with that, no luck. I've opened up correct ports 1433 on both PCs, even disabled the windows firewalls algother. Both server and client have SP3a installed, WinServer2003 has SP1 and XP SP2.
So I'm at a loss to how to remotely connect to my SQL Server. FYI I know the server itself is working fine because I can connect to it using Enterprize Manager/Query Analyser on the local machine. Any ideas? Many thanks for your help!

Problem: I upgraded a SQL Server Express instance to SQL Server Enterprise, but I'm unable to connect to the SQL server from any remote machine. Only local connections work -- and I've verified that Remote Connections are allowed in the SQL Surface Confg. utility.
Scenario: Server1 has an SQL Enterprise edition installed as a default installation. SharePoint Server 2007 was installed later, and during that install a SQL Express edition instance was installed which is part of the standard SharePoint install. That Express instance contains all the SharePoint content databases.
So Server1 has SQL instances:
Server1 <default install running Enterprise>
Server1OFFICESERVER <previously running SQL Express, now upgraded to Enterprise>
After upgrading Server1OFFICESERVER to Enterprise, everything seemed to work fine (i.e. SharePoint works fine). However when I try to connect remotely to Server1OFFICESERVER I can't. I've verified through the SQL Surface configuration tool that remote connections are allowed. I've rebooted the server as well. I've tried connecting remotely using various PCs and various applications (e.g. SQL Server Mgmt Studio, Visual Studio, etc.).
Any other ideas to try?

Hello, I am new to SQL Server Express, I am trying to upscale my database/Application to a SQL Server/Application with C#. All I want is to create a SQL Server service on my Office Server and manage it via my station. But I keep getting this error:
TITLE: Connect to Server
Cannot connect to SERVER.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10060)
The thing is that I went on the Server in the Surface Area Manager, I allowed IP and and Name pipes on network. Still does not work.
When I open the Manager from my station, I see the Server but keep getting this error.
Can someone please help me. Thank you

Currently I am being told that for someone to remotely view reports that are stored in RS an individual needs to login to a PC's OS with the correct domain and user name. When they launch the browser it will them allow them access to the reports stored in RS.
This seems to limit the capabilities for a remote access
Can you go to any PC anwhere, type in the URL, and get a prompt for user name and password for access?
Will the user name and password allow restrictions to what you can see?
Is there anwhere where I can see an example of this? Like a dummy site or something?
I really appreaciate the help!

Hello,
Only the server administrator user can connect to SSIS from remote workstations. All other users encounter "Access denied". What security settings are necessary to permit regular user access to SSIS? Firewalling is not an issue. SSIS is running and works fully for the server administrator user. All users can manage the Database with SSMS just fine; only SSIS cannot be accessed by regular users.
Server Configuration Notes:
Windows Server 2003
SQL Server 2005 Standard
Workstation Configuraiton Notes:
Windows XP Professional
SSMS (installed from the SS2005 media)
Thank you.

Hi everybody,
Currently we have a MIS application, developed in VB 6.0 - SQL Server 2000 platform, which is used by around 60 users in our office.
We are planning to host a website remotely, which would allow clients to place orders, track order status etc. on it.
Would it be possible to access our local SQL database from the remote website?

One of my tables in the db contains the websites and the location of their link directory. i.e. domain.com/linkdirectory
I want to run a check against every website's robots.txt file to ensure that it doesn't look like this:
user-agent: *
Disallow: /linkdirectory/
so I need a program that does the following:
For each website in database (start of loop)
Does robots.txt exist on their site ?(run a remote check)
if it does
is their link directory blocked in robots.txt?
if so, then log their user id and website name into an array for later use
end if
endif
end loop
How would I do this in ASP.net 2.0?

I have installed 2 MSDE 2000 engines in to the PC. one is no instance name, another one's instance name is 'TEST'.
I could use a GUI MSSQL manager to connect both with local machine.
But when I tried to connect both with other machine, I found that I only could connect either one which is start in service earlier.
My case is normal?
Are they conflict by the same network port? If yes, could I change the portnumber of the MSDE??
Thanks for your support!!

Hi All,
I'm trying (and have been for ages) to install a MSDE server with a
different instance name than the default. Im setting the
instancename when using the setup.exe file and all seems to install
fine, but when I then restart my system the SQL icon appears in the
system tray but the white circle is completely empty. It says
that it is not connected.
If i install with the default instance name then all seems to work fine.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong and what I can do to fix this problem?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi, I hope you can help.I have configured a Windows 2003 web server and SQL 2005 Server (on same box) to successfully allow remote connections and to allow access via SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005.The problem I have is that I want to restrict access to the databases on the server via the Management Studio to specific databases e.g. 1 database user "sees" only 1 database.I can configure it so that the user's remote access permissions do not allow access to other databases but they can still "see" the database listed in the Management Studio explorer.I can also configure it so that the users cannot see all the databases (by disabling View All Databases on SQL Server), but this means that they cannot not see their own database which they have permissions for.Is it impossible to have the desired behaviour of only displaying the database which the remote user accessing has permissions for and hiding all other databases?I have MSN'd,Googled and Yahoo'd this one to no avail :(Many thanksFergus

I am getting the error:
HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials.
Internet Information Services (IIS)
when I attempt to connect to Reports or ReportServer from my desktop, but it works normally when I login with the same userid and run it directly on the server, using IE. It is prompting me for a login 2 or 3 times before failing.
My configuration is:
Report Server system:
Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 - 32bit
SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Enterprise Edition
Windows & Web Service run as a domain account
Database connection is using domain account - not in db_owner, but in RSExec roles
Database is on another server, and is Native, not SharePoint integrated
Reports & ReportServer are in a separate application pool
Reporting Services had SP2 installed before it was configured
The Rport Server is a VM
Database server
Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 - x64
SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition 64bit
Version 9.00.3200.00
The Report Manager was not working at all, and I discovered that there was no entry in the .Net Framework version on the APS.Net tab in properties for the Reports virtual directory. I am not seeing any errors or anything unusual in the Event log or in the ReportServer log files.
FrontPage 2002 extensions were installed, and then removed. I noticed that this installed a SharePoint virtual directory, and that disappeared when I removed FrontPage extensions.
The domain group my userid is in is in the local Administrators group on the ReportServer system, and I have added this group as a System Administrator and Content Manager through the report Manager.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks,
Bill

So, here is the scenario. I have a server that is running a MSDE 2000 instance (8.0.2039). Runs just fine. I install another database, this one is SQL 2005 Express (9.0.3042). Both are installed as part of application setups. Now, for various reasons, I have to uninstall the MSDE 2000 application and reinstall it. After the reinstall, the SQL Browser service no longer enumerates the MSDE instance, only the 2005 instance. As a workaround I fixed the MSDE port on the server and the clients, and it works fine. It also works fine when the application is run from the local computer without a fixed port.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi- I am hoping someone can help me or shed some light on an issue I am having.
I have recently moved to a dedicated server with MSDE installed on it. The server was installed as the default instance and I changed the password to the SA account. I then copied my entire SA database over to the new MSDE database and everything was working good so it seemed. I believe at some point during copying of the data, or after installalling an application the SA account begain to fail and the password was changed. I have no idea how this happened, and better yet when I tried to change it logged in as the administrator with OSQL it told me I did not have sysadmin rights (I tried multiple Windows NT Auth logins and still got this error trying to change the password).
So... I reinstalled MSDE and created a named instane. I then attached the mdf/ldf files to my named instance and am able to connect ok from a .NET application directly to my new MSDE Named Instance database. Sounds like everything is great right? Not really, I can't figure out how to connect through enterprise manager and its driving me CRAZY!
1. I CAN connect via any .NET app and a connection string
2. I CAN connect via the server with OSQL
3. I CAN connect via the web based enterprise manager (which is very limited and a freeware ASP app).
4. I CANNOT connect via enterprise manager. I have verified from the (SVRNETCN.EXE utility) that the port is open and have tried connecting to MY_IPADDRESSNAMEDINSTANCE but no luck.
One additional side note, when I wasn't using a named instance I had no problems connecting through enterprise manager to my default MSDE instance.
Any help would be grealy appriciated, this is driving me nuts!
