Access To The Property Values For My Expressions

Oct 2, 2006

I may be looking too hard for this but I can't find a way around it.

I have an Expression and in that expression, I want to access a property on the same object (it would be great to get the properties of other objects as well).

Example: I have a flat file connection where I defined the name of the flat file in my ConnectionString. I also have a variable that I have it linked to my dtsConfig which points to the proper folder name at run time.

How can I create an expression similar to this:

@[User::strFolder] + @[Connectionstring]

where @[User::strFolder] is my variable and points to the correct folder for the given server the package is running on and @[Conenctionstring] is my made up name to access the VALUE of the Connectionstring that I have for this flat file.

So if I have the following:

in my connectionstring property: flatfile.txt

in my strFolder derived from dtsConfig at runtime: E:etl_data

I would like my final connectionstring to look as follow:

E:etl_dataflatfile.txt

So far I know I can do it with two variables but it would be great if I could reuse the property values of the current object for my expressions or any other object.

Perhaps this value is available thru the script where I can access "any" property in my dtsx and store it into another variable and then use it. This option at least allows me to reuse code instead of hardcoding table name (connectionstring) into my variables.

Did I make this too difficult and there is a simple way to access an object's property inside the expression builder?

Thanks

Anatole

Property Expressions Editor

Oct 10, 2007

Hi,

I am trying to load some text files to a SQLServer database. My text files are going to have a name like orders_200709.txt. I am trying to use variables and expressions to evaluate the datepart, YYYYMM. The problem I am facing is with the 'Property Expressions Editor'. When I click on the ellipsis ..., I get the editor, but I am not able to add a new expression; not able to view properites etc. Everything is like in a Disable mode. Does anyone know the cause of this?

Thanks

Setting Expressions In Datareader's SQLCommand Property Dynamically

Sep 19, 2006

Hi all,

I have been playing with integration services for a few days and at the moment, its up there with my list of software that I find ......painful.

What I am trying to do is read different tables from my one SQL database, then populate my Access database with its data.

I have put a foreach loop which goes through a collection SQL statements that I have entered into it. It first assigns it to a string variable called tablenameVar which contain statements such as "Select * from Terminals". Then the datareader is supposed to execute it based on the connectstring which never changes, and the SQLCommand value which I passed using the variable @[User::tableName]. However when I try to run it, I'm getting this error.

TITLE: Package Validation Error

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Does anyone have an idea of what I should do? or maybe a better way to do it? I appreciate you guys for taking a time to look at this.

Execute Package Utility / Set Values / How To Set Property Path And Values

Feb 4, 2008

Hi
I have one problem in SSIS for passing Variable Values while executing Package. I'm giving in details as below:

I opened Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
Made Connection to Integration Services
To Execute Package I Right Clicked and Click on Run Package
Then I Clicked on Execute and package was executed successfully.

Problem is that if I try to Set Values then Package through Error
DTExec: Could not set ProcessMode value to M.

Basically I could not understand in which format I should pass the Variables.
What I tried is listed below:

ProcessMode;M
Package.Variables[User:rocessMode].Value;M
Package.Variables[ProcessMode].Value;M
But every time I got errors.

And then I tried from Command Line
DTEXEC /DTS "MSDBLoad_Order" /SERVER SERVERNAME /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF /REPORTING V /SET Package.Variables[ProcessMode].Value;M

First time Process run successfully. And it has changed the ProcessMode to M also. But after that it was also not changing the ProcessMode Value to M.

Please help in regarding. I tried a lot from Site examples also, but could not get proper solution.

Thanks in advance

When Should I Examine The Values Of Expressions?

Aug 24, 2007

I have written a few custom tasks and I've noticed that they don't behave exactly like the built-in MS tasks when in design mode. Specifically, they don't update themselves with the values of expressions that have been assigned to their custom properties.

Here's an example. My task exposes a property called JobNumber. Let's say I make a variable called @[User::JobNumber], give it a value, and assign the variable as an expression to the JobNumber property. When I look at the properties in either the property window or my custom UI editor, the value assigned to the variable never shows up in the property itself. If, on the other hand, I were to assign a variable to the ServerName property of an OLEDB connection manager, the next time that task validates itself I will see the value of my variable in the ServerName property.

Everything works fine at run-time; it's just design-time that the behavior is undesirable.

I'm sure this is because I need to be doing something myself, but the question is what, and when?

Expressions Using Values Of More Than 4000 Characters

Mar 31, 2008

Is it not possible for expressions to work with variables that contain more than 4000 characters? I've heard of a limitation of expressions and 4000 characters, but I thought this meant that the expression itself cannot be more than 4000 characters -- not that the expression cannot work with values of more than 4000 characters.

For example, I have a two variables:

Test1 (type = String):
Value = [Some really long string whose length is > 4000 characters]

Test2 (type = String, EvaluateAsExpression = True):
Expression = "-" + @[User::Test1] + "-"

Test2 throws the following error:

The variable User::Test1 contains a string that exceeds the maximum allowed length of 4000 characters.

Reading the variable "User::Test1" failed with error code 0xC0047100.

Why is there such a limitation when working with string values? This seems really restricting. Are there any possible workarounds?

Thanks in advance.

Propery Expressions: Values Not Updated

Sep 20, 2006

I see some strange behavior when running a package using the SQL Server Agent. The package I run calls a number of child packages, in which I use property expressions to set - among other things - the path to text files I read into a database.

The property expressions are in the form: @[User::ThePath] + "\TheFile.txt". The variable ThePath is read from an XML configuration file at runtime from the "master" package and passed on to the child packages using a parent package variable configuration.

My problem is this: When the package is executed by the SQL Server Agent, the properties for the path of the text files are not updated, and the package fails, as it cannot locate the files. When using DTExecUI to execute the same package, everything runs fine.

Could it be a permissions issue? I don't think so, as the SQL Server Agent runs under the same account as I am logged in when executing with DTExecUI.

Anyone?

Unable To Set Values In Array Custom Property

Apr 21, 2006

I'd like to be able to hold onto lineageIDs in a list in the custom property of an output object. I found that I can really only easily use an array which is fine but now that I have coded it I cannot set any of the array values programatically. I can't even initialize the array the way I want it. I also cannot change the value in the debugger, it just pops back to zero.
Am I missing something? Here's how I'm trying to do it:

IDTSCustomProperty90 linIDsProperty = output.CustomPropertyCollection.New();
linIDsProperty.Name = "KeyColumnLineageIDs";
linIDsProperty.Value = new int[MAX_KEY_COLS];
for (int i = 0; i < ((int[])linIDsProperty.Value).Length; ++i)
((int[])linIDsProperty.Value)[i] = -1;

(please ignore the \ around the [i], the forum changes [i] into for some reason)

Thanks
Charlie.

Update Package To Save New Property Values

Jan 4, 2007

Hi,

using custom tasks. My properties got saved properly the first time the task is added to the workspace. After that, changing values in the CustomUI updates the properties, but the package shows, that It doesn't need to get saved. So my properties don't get changed in the package XML. Moving my custom task on the workspace after changing properties, let the package go into "save me" state and my propertiy values get saved to XML.

So now, Im searching for a method or property I have to call or set to show the package it needs to get saved after closing my CustomUI.

Any hint?

Thanks

PS: When I change the property value in the task properties grid (lower right). The package gets notified about the need to get saved.

Property Values Cleared After Package Deployment

May 14, 2008

I have a very odd problem. I have a package which uses some custom tasks that were written in C#. When the package is deployed to our production server, *some* of the property values for *some* of the tasks are cleared. For example, I have these five tasks:

FP Export File Logger
FP Import File Logger
FP Import Table Logger
FP Instance Logger
FP Job Reader

All of them inherit (of course) from Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Task. All of them have custom members (some similar, some different), and of course, different implementation (though they are mostly the same). This test package has one instance of each of the different tasks.

As I said above, when we deploy to our production server, *some* of the property values for *some* of the tasks are cleared -- but when deployed to our dev server, everything remains intact.

Here is what is cleared:

- On 4 of the 5 tasks, the Description property (inherited by Task) is cleared, but the other one remained intact
- On 3 of the 5 tasks, the Connection property (custom property in all tasks) is cleared, but the other two remained intact
- 3 of the tasks have other string properties that were set, and all of these were cleared

We can reproduce this on two different production servers, and these two servers have some different configurations, suggesting these would not be the culprit:

- They have different service packs (one is build 2047, the other build 3042)
- One has the custom SSIS components installed (in the GAC), the other one does not

Our development server, where the package is deployed as expected, has build 2047 w/ the components installed.

Here are the packages, where you can compare and see the differences (using a text comparison tool):

Dev-GOOD.xml
Prod-BAD.dtsx

These were created after being deployed by importing within a Visual Studio SSIS project from the server.

Any suggestions would be *greatly* appreciated, as we are totally stumped as to why this is happening.

EDIT: Additional clues, this package is deployed to the MSDB. If it's deployed to the File System, it remains unmodified.

Thanks in advance.

Where Can I Find Wrapping Or Truncating Property Of Values In A Textbox!

Hi All,

I developed a report with some values in textboxes. I want the output not to wrap around to the next line but to be truncated if it is more that the size of the textbox. Is there any setting that i can do b/c values are going to the second line when their size is more like printing name and last name will cause last name to go to the second line ?

Thank you in advance.

Custom Task Not Updating Property Values Or Saving.

May 2, 2008

Hi Folks,

I have a task I wrote which does not always update the property value (as seen in the properties pane)
Basically, change something on the form, then update the task host property with:
this.taskHostValue.Properties["Duration"].SetValue(this.taskHostValue, Convert.ToInt32(spnDuration.Value));

Stepping through this, it does exactly what it is supposed to. Having a look at the property value, it confirms it has changed.
Reopening the UI and resetting all the controls returns the expected results.

The package however does not realise it has changed. There is no * next to the package name in the top tabs.
As long as the package thinks it is unchanged, SaveXML does not get called either so the tasks do not persist.

Changing the value on the properties pane works fine though.

The frustrating thing is this is slightly random. Slight in the sense that sometimes it works but most of the time it does not.

The sample code I used was the MS download IncrementTask (Which works BTW) so I can't see it as being a VS / SSIS bug but rather something I am / am not doing. 3 tasks I have written all behave the same. I have to "nudge" them before savign the package.

Any ideas what the problem might be?

TIA

Cheers,
Crispin

If I place the actual connection string inside instead of trying to reference the web.config setting it works, but using 'System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings' returns the error. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Howto Retrieve Access HyperlinkBase Property From ADO?

Nov 13, 2006

I'm inserting records into an Access database using ADO. One of the fields is defined as a hyperlink. I figured out the #displayname#path#subpath# formatting, but at issue is how to describe a relative path (to a filename) - I'd like to programmatically retrieve the database property 'HyperlinkBase' so I can properly specify the relative path. Is there some provider-specific schema that I can use to get this info for the Access file the Connection object references? I find example code for getting hyperlink base and other builtin document properties for Word, PowerPoint, Visio, but can't seem to find this for Access.

SQL Server Agent Job Step Properties Window Loses Property Values Containing Semicolon (;)

May 16, 2007

Here's a weird one:

We are setting up a job for the SQL Server Agent via SSMS. The Job Step Type is SSIS.

In the Job Step Properties window, on the Set values tab, you can enter Values to override your package variables - normally all well and good.

However in this particular case, the variable Value contains semicolons ( - it is a Connection String for an ODBC driver. Eg: Driver={Client Access ODBC Driver (32-bit)};system=MYSERVER;...

The behaviour for this Value is weird:

If the Value is not surrounded with double quotes ("), the job fails with "The command line parameters are invalid."
If the Value is surrounded with double quotes ("), the job will run as intended. The catch is: that entry and any subsequent "Set Values" entries disappear next time the Job Step Properties window is opened.

This looks like a bug with the parsing of those strings by the Job Step Properties window?

Or am I missing something?

Changing Code Page Property Using Property Expression Doesn't Work

Jun 16, 2006

I am having problems exporting data into a flat file using specific code page. My application has a variable "User::CodePage" that stores code page value (936, 950, 1252, etc) based on the data source. This variable is assigned to the CodePage property of desitnation file connection using Property expression.

But, when I execute the package, the CodePage property of the Destination file connection defaults to the initial value that was set for "User:CodePage" variable in design mode. I checked the value within the variable during runtime and it changes correctly for each data source. But, the property of the destinatin file connection doesn't change and results in an error.

[Flat File Destination [473]] Error: Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "Column01" returned status value 4 and status text "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page.".

[DTS.Pipeline] Error: The ProcessInput method on component "Flat File Destination" (473) failed with error code 0xC02020A0. The identified component returned an error from the ProcessInput method. The error is specific to the component, but the error is fatal and will cause the Data Flow task to stop running.

If I manually update the variable with correct code page and re-run the ETL, everything works fine. Just that it doesn't work during run-time mode.

Can someone please help me resolve this.

Thanks much.

Value Of A Readonly Property Of Custom Task Is Not Updated In Property Window

Apr 17, 2008

Hi,

I developed a simple custom control flow component which has several read/write properties and one readonly property (lets call it ROP) whichs Get method simple returns the value of a private variable (VAR as string). In the Execute method the VAR has a value assigened. When I put the value of ROP or VAR into MsgBox I can see the correct value. However when I execute the component I can not see the value of the ROP in the property window. I see the property but its value is empty string. For example when I put a breakpoint to postexecute or check the property before click OK in a MsgBox I would expect that the property value would be updated in SSIS as well. Is there a way how to display correct values of custom tasks properties in property window?

Thanks for any hints.

(URGENT) Cannot Be Written To The Property. The Expression Was Evaluated, But Cannot Be Set On The Property

May 7, 2008

Untill recently I had a smooth running SSIS package,but suddenly it throws error syaing
"OnError,,,,,,,The result of the expression

"@[User:trTextFileImpDirectory] +"SomeTextStringHere"+ @[User:trANTTextFileName] +(DT_STR,30,1252) @[User:taging_Date_Key]+ "SomeTextStringHere"
" on property "ConnectionString" cannot be written to the property. The expression was evaluated, but cannot be set on the property."

I have child SSIS package running under a parent package (through execute package task)

I have few flat file connection managers in child package for text file import , in which I am building text file path dynamically at run time by assigning an expression in connection string property of connection manager.
The Expression is as follows

"@[User:trTextFileImpDirectory] +"SomeTextStringHere."+ @[User:trANTTextFileName] +(DT_STR,30,1252) @[User:taging_Date_Key]+ +"SomeTextStringHere"

Where @[User:trTextFileImpDirectory] is a variable which contains path of directory containg text
files.Value in this variable is assigned at runtime from parent package's variable,which in turns fetch
value from a configuration file on local server.

With my current configuration this path has been configured to some other server's directory over network ( I.e my package picks text files from some other servers folder over network)

While
"Some string here"+ @[User:trANTTextFileName]" part of file name string.

(DT_STR,30,1252) @[User:taging_Date_Key] Contain the date of processing ,value in this variable is also picked up at run time from parent package variable.

1) So can someone give me some insight into possible reason of failures.
2) Is it possible that problem arises if directory (from which I m picking text files) is assigned password or is there exist some problem in accessing forlders over network ?
3) Or there can be some problem in package configuration at design time( I.e where I m assigning value in variable from parent package vriables)?

Help With DTS And Access Default Values

I have a DTS package that is connected to a table in an Access97 database and to a duplicate(by schema) table in SQL2000. If there is a default value in the Access97 field properties the DTS package will import that value regardless of any other value in the Access field. I can not see anything in the DTS designer that handles this choice.

Even when I look at the Access connection in preview it shows only the default values.

Any thoughts on getting the actual values?

The header table row for G4 contains 3 textboxes containing the sums of the contents within G4. The header table row for G4 is visible while it's contents, including the G4 footer table row, is kept invisible until the report user drills down into the group.

When the report user drills down into G4 the footer table row becomes visible and the sums of the contents of the group are displayed for a second time.

At this point I want the sums in the header to be set to invisible when the sums in the footer are made visible by the drilldown.

When I try to reference the hidden property of textbox66 in the G4 footer in order to set the hidden property of header textbox57 in the G4 header I get to this point...

=IIF(reportitems!textbox66.

When it fails to give me an option of choosing the .Hidden property and instead only gives me a .Value.

If I complete the IIF statement manually so that it spells out .....

=IIF(ReportItems!Textbox66.Hidden = False, True, False)

...the report chokes on it.

So my question is, how do I reference the hidden property of one or more textboxes in a group to use as condition checks to set the hidden property of another textbox in that same group?

Thank you for any help you can provide. We are only now beginning to implement reporting services and I have not yet had the chance to research this in greater detail for lack of time.

Adding Up Column Values (asp && Access 2000)

Nov 30, 2006

HiI've got a quandry - I have a detailed database that handles advertorders between a design agency and printers / magazines etc.I want to add up the total spent by the client and put the results to afield.I've actually done that using a query table in access - it should bequite simple as i can bind the 'total amount' to my table - the onlything it does not currently do is filter the total based on the monthselected.For example if you look athttp://www.daneverton.com/dg2data/months/2006-12.aspThe data here is filtered by the issue equaling Dec-2006The actual order total is £13,622 but the column is showing the totalfor all entries to date (a years worth = £ 422,048)I'm sure that there is only a basic tweak required but i'm banging myhead over what to doThe sql is "SELECT * FROM monnodraught, q_monodraught_total WHERE[Issue / Edition] LIKE ? ORDER BY Publication ASC"Any help gladly received.

Can't Import An Access Table Due To Null Values.

Jul 20, 2005

Question: Why would I not be able to import an Access 97 table inwhich some records have null values in fields that allow null values?Wouldn't the table's design be imported first, bringing the columns'"allow nulls" attribute with it?I'm dealing with both text and numeric columns. Not all columnscontaining nulls cause an error.Thanks,Bob C.

Calling An SQL Server 2005 Stored Procedure Within Microsoft Access And Reading Values

Jan 14, 2008

Goodday.

I have finally been able to create a connection from Access to the SQL 2005 Server and was able to call a stored proc (in Server) in the following way

Code Block
Dim cnn As New ADODB.Connection
Dim cmd As New ADODB.Command
Dim rst As New ADODB.Recordset

cnn.ConnectionString = "Provider='sqloledb'; Data Source='Private';" & _
"Initial Catalog='DBName';Integrated Security='SSPI';"

cnn.Open

cmd.ActiveConnection = cnn
cmd.CommandText = "sp_DefaultEntityData"
cmd.CommandType = adCmdStoredProc

Set rst = cmd.Execute

rst.MoveFirst
Do While Not rst.EOF
lstEntity.AddItem (rst.Fields(0)), 0
'lstEntity.AddItem (rst.Fields(1)), 1
rst.MoveNext
Loop

The Stored Proc is as follow:

Code Block
set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
go

ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_DefaultEntityData]
AS
BEGIN

SET NOCOUNT ON;

SELECT tblEntities.[Name], tblEntities.PrimaryKey
FROM tblEntities
ORDER BY tblEntities.PrimaryKey;

END

The table contains 24 entries

As you can see in the VB code, I am trying to read the returned "table" into an Access ListBox. The listbox should display the entities Name but not the Primary key, but the primary key should still be "stored" in the to so that it can be used to access other data.

I have moved the tables from Access to SQL Server 2005, and would also like to port all the sql queries to sp's in SQL Server. The old way for populating the listbox was a direct SQL query in the RowSource property field. I have tried to set the lstEntity.RowSource = rst but it did not work.

Here are my Q's:
1) As what does the SP return when it is called and is there a better way to catch it than I am doing at the moment?
2) How do I read the values into the listbox, without displaying the primary key in die box?

Thank you in advance!
Any help is very much appreciated.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
I try to do an ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 programming in my VB 2005 Express to get @percentage printed out in the VB Form1. I read some articles in the websites and MSDN about this task and I am very confused about "How to Work with Output Parameters & Report their Values in VB Forms": (1) Do I need the Form.vb [Design] and specify its properties of the object and classes I want to printout? (2) After the SqlConnectionString and the connection.Open(), how can I bring the value of @percentage to the Form.vb? (3) The following is my imcomplete, crude draft code:

Imports System.Data
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Imports System.Data.SqlTypes

Public Class Form1

Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=pubs;Integrated Security=SSPI;"

Dim connection As SqlConnection = New

SqlConnection(connectionString)

Try

connection.Open()

Dim command As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("byroyalty", connection)

command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
...................................................................
..................................................................
etc.
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
From the above-mentioned (1), (2) and (3), you can see how much I am lost/confused in attempting to do this task. Please help and give me some guidances and good key instructions for getting the output parameter printed out in the FORM.vb in my VB 2005 Express project.

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

Expressions

Jun 7, 2006

When creating expressions we have access to a list of functions. It is my understanding that while these functions seem to have the same names and parameters as SQL functions, they are not so. They are implemented in the package libraries themselves. It is also my understanding that this function library cannot be extended to add new ones.

Am I correct? If so... why not?

Leaving alone the fact that they follow the same screwy names as SQL (instead of .NET on which SSIS is built on) and what seems to be a limited library (i.e. You have YEAR(), MONTH(), DAY() functions but no HOUR(), MINUTE(), or SEC() functions -- instead you have to use DATEPART())

I mean honestly... a common expression for most people is using date and times for folder and filenames... So instead of a simple .NET type expression of DateTime.ToString("yyyyMMdd") or Format(DateTime.Now, "yyyyMMdd_hhmmss") I end up with the very complex:

(DT_STR, 4, 1252) YEAR( GETDATE() ) + RIGHT("0" + (DT_STR, 2, 1252) MONTH( GETDATE() ), 2) + RIGHT("0" + (DT_STR, 2, 1252) DAY( GETDATE() ), 2) + "_" + RIGHT("0" + (DT_STR, 2, 1252) DATEPART("hour", GetDate()), 2) + RIGHT("0" + (DT_STR, 2, 1252) DATEPART("minute", GetDate()), 2) + RIGHT("0" + (DT_STR, 2, 1252) DATEPART("second", GetDate()), 2)

Personally I find myself using Script Tasks and Variables to "build" my expressions and just use Expressions to set the property to the variable. (Which I think may defeat the full purpose of expressions.)

Any thoughts?
