Mar 1, 2006I am using VS 2005 to develop a Pocket PC 2003 application and for some reason I dont have the ability to assign my datasource to a SQL Mobile Database?
When opening Server Explorer, right clicking Data Connection, Add New Data Source, Change Data Source, the only options I get are

I was trying to follow the tutorial
Step by Step: Developing a SQL Mobile Application with Visual Studio 2005
and SQL Server 2005 (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnppcgen/html/med302_msdn_sql_mobile.asp)
and in that tutorial when they do the exact same thing it shows a screen shot that also lists 'Microsoft SQL Server Mobile Edition'
Any ideas why I dont have that option? FYI, I have SQL Server 2005 and have installed SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition.

Accessing SQL Server Data From Oracle Developer 2000 Apps

I have a customer that wants to start using SQL Server 7.0 instead of Oracle, but they have a lot of Oracle applications (made in Developer 2000 and Forms). Due to the big effort needed to convert those applications (to Visual Basic), they want to be able somehow to migrate only data from Oracle to SQL Server, and then use some tool that will allow them to use the same applications with the SQL Server 7.0 engine.
I found on the "SQL Server Developer's Kit" a document describing the process of migrating data and applications from Oracle to SQL Server. There is a mention to an Oracle tool called "Oracle Gateway to SQL Server" that will translate calls received by the Oracle engine to the SQL Server engine, but this approach will still require the existence of Oracle servers (which is the thing the customer no longer wants).
The second option mentioned on that document, and the one that seems more attractive, is the use of Oracle "Open Client Adapter" (OCA) that will allow Developer 2000 applications to communicate directly to SQL Server via ODBC. However, I have been unable to find (on the Oracle site) any documentation regarding this tool.
Has anynoe heard or used such tool (OCA) ? Any comments, tips, drawbacks, experience you could share ? Any other idea on how a thing like that could be accomplished ? Perhaps a third-party application that can act as a gateway between the Forms app and ODBC/SQL Server, or that will be able to generate VB code from a Developer 2000/Forms app...

SQL Server Mobile 2005 Merge Replication Problem On Windows Mobile 5.0

Dear ppl,
I am writing an application for a device (MDA Pro T-Mobile) having Windows Mobile 5.0 using
-MS .NET Compact Framework 2.0 SP-1
-SQL Mobile 2005.
-VS 2005 .NET
The application uses Merge Replication. The error occurs in the Synchronise() Method of the SqlCeReplication object.
"SQL Server Mobile encountered problems when opening the database."

I don't understand why I am having this error. It does create the database on AddSubscription() method but it is failing opening the database on Synchronise(). I have also tried uninstalling and then reinstalling all the SQL Mobile components in the following order.
-sqlce30.wce5.armv4i.cab
-sqlce30.repl.wce5.armv4i.cab
-sqlce30.dev.ENU.wce5.armv4i.cab
However, when i run this application on a device(Dell X50 AXIM) with Pocket PC 2003, it runs fine creating the database and sysnchronising it.
The target platform for the project is Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC SDK.
Does any one have any clue what could be the problem ?

I am developping a non-managed C++ application for PocketPC using a SQL Server mobile database.
The application is compiled for PocketPC 2003 and uses SQL Server Mobile v2. I use Visual Studio 2005. But I need to compile the application for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. So I installed the WM5 SDK and had the WM5 into my project configuration.
The "ssceoledb.h" which I include incluses the "transact.h" file. But my problem is that this file is only provided with the PocketPC 2003 SDK and not in the WM5 SDK.
So I cannot use the WM5 configuration project with SQL Server. I also tried with the last SQL Server Mobile 2005 (ie v3.0) and the "ssceoledb30.h" also includes "transact.h".
Did I miss something to install ?
Do you know how I can resolve the problem ?

Web Apps Problem After Uncheking Windows Authentication

I installed Sql Server 2000 in my server with windows authentication.
IIS side under security tab checked Windows authentication option.
When i try to my asp.net web application everything is working fine.
But now as per user wish i dont want to use windows authentication.So sql side i create one user called 'global' and giving full permissions .In IIS side unchecked the windows option and checked
Anonymous access and given 'global' user id at anonymous user account place.
Now when i try to run my Web application i can connect to sql servel and fetch the data but no events are running in my .aspx page.means when i click any button or select list or combo box nothing is happening.All events are not firing and also not giving any error message.Its simple showing the page as it is.
When i un checked Anonymous access and checked windows authentication everyting working fine.
Really not getting why its doing like this .
Pl help me in this.

Cannot Build SQL Server Mobile Solution For Windows Mobile 5

I am working on a project that builds for Pocket PC on both Mobile 2003 and Mobile 5. The project uses/will use SQL Server Mobile to store local data.
Project created from new with support for both platforms. I include required header files ssceerr30.h and ssceoledb30.h.
Project builds fine in WM2003 configuration, release and debug.
When I build for WM5 the compiler cannot find the header file transact.h. This is included from within ssceoledb30.h. Same as under WM2003.
In WM2003 configuration if I highlight the ssceoledb30.h include in Visual Studio and open the header, it takes me to <Visual Studio dir>SmartDevicesSDKSQL ServerMobilev3.0. I then locate the include for transact.h and do the same, which takes me <Visual Studio dir>SDKPocketPC2003include. The file exists.
If I repeat the above 'browsing' under the WM5 configuration, ssceoledb30.h takes me to a different copy in the WM5 SDK directory. There is no diff between the file here and the other copy used by WM2003. If I attempt to open transact.h - file does not exist.
Fix (which I'm not too sure about, i.e. is it OK?) - If I copy transact.h to the WM5 SDK directory, the project builds.
Why has transact.h disappeared from WM5 SDK?
I can find no ref's to this problem anywhere. Is my installation of the WM5 SDK corrupt? What else could I be missing?
Is there a sample for SQL Server mobile (like the NorthwindOLEDB sample) that comes configured to build for WM5?

I've used the code from UILogon.aspx (Forms Authentication Security Extension) to extend a proxy server in a windows application to manage the cookie when connecting to a Reporting Services web service.
When the proxy class is instantiated I get this error on the AuthCookie property:

How To Open SDF File Stored On Windows Mobile Device From A Windows Desktop App?

Have two C# applications - one WinForms desktop app, the other a WinForms smart device app. Both use SQL Server Compact CE 3.5 to store data locally. Both work just fine.
Now the desktop app needs to open and update the .SDF file that is stored on the Windows Mobile device. (Device will be docked via USB.)
What format would the path to the .SDF look like that the WinForms application would need to specify in order to open it?

The example Northwind at "Sql Mobile 5.0" doesn't works with WM5.0 SDK, due to imcompatibility issues. It works with the WM2003 sdk, but i'm programming in native c++ for WM5 devices.

Feb 28, 2006I am very new to programming using Pocket PC's. I am attempting to develop a system that will allow scientist to access information while in the field. I read somewhere that the pocket pc must be connected to a PC before it can access a sqll mobile database. I am currently searching for the answer to this question to ensure that I can do what I am wanting to do.
If this is not true, which I hope it isn't, can someone show me some quick connectivity code to connect to the database. I am using VB.NET to do this programming.

Sep 16, 2006Hi, I am developing a small asp.net application where I read from a readonly omnis database via odbc then dependant on user input write records to a second database.My first idea was to use an odbc connection to Omnis database and write to ms sql database. There is quite a few queries that need to be made to the Omnis database and I am binding a datagrid to the MS Sql server database. I was hoping to use stored procedures to update the mssql tables. So there will be much opening and closing of connections. Should I go down that road or should i think of using an Access database, with linked table to the Omnis database, then only one connection needs to be made. And I can store my information in the Access database tables. Thanks.

Apr 12, 2006I'm new to databases as you probably can tell. A friend sent me three data bases, which in my mind should have been one database with all the tables included, but he didn't. So my question is, can you pull info from two databases in the same query?
I write the query acessing one database and the result chart must depend on a where predicate based on accessing tables in another database. If this isn't possible, how do I get the tables I need together, that presently reside in differing databases?

Windows Mobile 6 Problem
May 29, 2008Can an application developed in VS 2005 with the .NET Compact Framework 2, and the windows mobile 5 sdk run on a windows mobile 6 device?
I am having a problem with creating a merge subscription on the windows mobile 6 device. After all parameters are entered, i click on the routine to build the db and then subscribe to the server database publication and the device keeps throwing invalid cast exception, then drops out of the program. I have a try catch in the routine for the invalidcastexception but it still seems to be fatal. The catch block notification code does not show any exception details.
The program runs fine when connected to a populated test database.
I have triple checked all the parameters that are entered to create the subscription, and tested connectivity to sqlcesa30.dll.

On PocketPC : Embedded Visual Basic 3.0 application + PocketAccess DB
I synchronise my DBs through ActivSync.
It runs good before Windows Mobile 5.
My customers asked me for new PocketPC with this application, so I bought some new PocketPCs : but as I see, syncronisation with Access is no more supported.
So what are my solutions ?
My customer wait for there PocketPC, so I need a quick solution, I don't want to rewrite all my application now.
My application run before WM5, so now I don't want to have to pay for a Visual Studio .Net, some SQL Server, etc ....
Please, what are the solutions that won't cost me more than the time that have already lost with this new Windows Mobile 5 ?

I am storing information in the executable directory and need to interact with it.
In Windows XP/Vista you can use Application.StartupPath to obtain current location and then add your folder/file name on the end of the string to interact with the file. How in the world do you do it in Mobile?

PLEASE HELP - Accessing Web Services Through Windows App
Mar 6, 2007I am running a vb.net application that is using the Web Service to
issue Update Snapshot. There is a Windows account we are using as a
Service account that has the proper permissions to Generate Events.
The application is running on AutoSys on a 2003 server. I have
confirmed that it will run under this users credentials manually by
logging into the server as the user and firing the app. It works
without a problem. This was using Default Credentials.
The AutoSys job is configured to run under this user's credentials.
There are three ways I have executed this application
>>Through AutoSys running as the user with the proper permissions (this is in place of a Local Service account which is default for AutoSys. This windows user has local admin permissions on the AutoSys server as well as Generate Event permission as confirmed before)
>>By logging into the server as Administrator and executing the app with "Run As..." set to the Windows ID
>>By switching to new.NetworkCredentials and passing the hardcoded username/pass/domain
For all of the above scenarios - it fails
The ONLY time it successfully issues UpdateSnapshot is when I am
logged in to the server as the user in question. In ALL other
instances detailed above it fails and the following comes out of the
event log
"Line 1: Incorrect syntax near 'MyDomainName'.
I have no idea why it is choking on the Domain Name in all three of
those scenarios.
Do I need to impersonate that user through code when passing the Web
Service credentials??

Accessing 2 Databases On The SQL Server Through ASP.net

First of all I'd like to say I'm new to the forums, and in fact new to ASP.net.
I've had a couple of applications running in VB.net for the last year or so that I now am looking to move on and into ASP.net (main reason is to do with implementation to remote sites in foreign countries).
I'm currently following through the "Working with data and ASP.net 2.0" walkthrough on this site, which I must say has been a great help.
I'll start with the background stuff first
I have my main database on an SQL server. I also have 2 other databases on there - Customer and Employee. The reason for these are that they are shared amongst my VB applications and I kept them as seperate databases so that one database is all that needs to be administered and maintained, and these changes are then seen on both apps (takes away redundant data as well).
In my main database, main table, is a field called CustomerID. This value relates to the CustomerID in the Customer table. In my VB app all I do is have the user select a customer name, and then the customer ID value is copied to the CustomerID field of my main table when inserting / updating a row. This is simply accomplished with 2 SQL connections and 2 dataAdapters. I also use 2 dataSets - one for Customer, one for WorkRequests (the main database)...
I use ComponentOne stuff so that my grid will show the CustomerName instead of the CustomerID etc, and the same applies when I use my Employee database - I run many dataAdapters to this for things such as Account Manager, Technologist, Creator, UpdatedBy etc etc.
Now, I'm new to VS 2005 - my apps were created in VS 2003 and .net 1.1. Can I easily re-create my apps in ASP.net? My primary goal at the moment is to make sure I can load a row, and display the "lookup" values instead of the "integer" value. As my tables are in seperate databases, I would like to know the best way of accomplishing this, if it is of course possible.

I have it working in pocket pc Windows mobile 2003 version. But, after I tried to install the exact same cab files and system into Windows mobile 5.0, the replication fail.
Anyone has any idea?

Hi there, i am building a mobile app using vs 2008, the app has about 8 - 12 forms that collect data.. i am thinking of
i am trying to decide how i want to save the temporary work data while the user fills the data collection forms.
when the user selects to create a new report, i will
create a new xml file...
as user moves from form to form, i will update the file
when the user has finished filling up all the data i will create a transaction and insert the data into the sql ce database and delete the file...
i will be using sql ce 3.5
i think it supports transactions
i think it also supports identity.... i am using sql management studio 2005 standalone , so i cannot visually modify the 3.5 sdf.,..,. is there a tool for 2008 that will let me visually modify the table(s)? i dont want to use the 2008 feb community edition...
is there a better way to do this? should i skip the xml and go directly into sql ce insert (for the first record creation) and updates? i think this will be a performance killer on a win mob devilce (5.0)
p.s. i cannot store data in a class, and then commit the class to the transaction because if the application crashes i will loose class data, so xml file will be needed.,
suggestions?

Jul 23, 2005Hello all. I have just built another PC (New PC)and have it connected to myOriginal PC via a LAN. I have my SQL Server 2000 installed on the OriginalPC. Both PCs use WinXP Pro OS. I believe I now have to install the ClientTools on the New PC but after that, how do I access the SQL Server that ison the Original PC. The SQL Server is setup with mixed (both WindowsAuthentication and SQL Server Authentication). Just how do I use the SQLQuery Analyzer that I just installed on the New PC to connect to andretreive data from the SQL Databases which are on the Original PC? Thanksin advance for any help, Jim.

Unable to open the physical file "c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDATAAssets_Maintenance_log.ldf". Operating system error 2: "2(The system cannot find the file specified.)". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5120)
So what am I doing wrong? The install of these sample databases is simple and straight-forward.

Data Application Blocks For Windows Mobile
Feb 5, 2006I've read that microsoft.applicationblocks.data for .net v2 can't be deployed to a mobile app, and my experience bears that out. So I 'm wondering if there are application blocks for windows mobile 5 that would know how to both talk to sql server mobile and sql server 2005. I see OpenNetCF has a port but as far as I can tell, they only address sql server mobile and not talking to a sql server 2005 remote database. I can use the OpenNetCF version for my sql server mobile requirements, but I'm hoping there is an encapsulation of sqlclient calls for communication with my server db.
