I Iwill have many customers that will need their own set of records and access pages "branded for their company" each customer will have many clients. I am hosting this application on a windows 2003 server with SQL 2005 server enterprise.

I am using windows authentication, I have created a username in windows, then i added the windows user in SQL management studio in security, granted "DB Read" and "DB write" and again under the database security tab. still from the web authentication fails. i must be nissing a step or two?

I expect to set up a username for each database as i setup new customers.

Error In Accessing Data Via Linked Server

Nov 23, 2006

Hi,

     I am trying to access the View through linked server connection .The linked server connection is between two sql server 2005.

    The problem is I am not able to access 2 columns of nvarchar datatype of length 255, from the view through select statement.

     I do a SELECT col1,col2 from VIEW,then getting the following error .

     Cannot get the data of the row from the OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SRVXPR". Could not convert the data value due to reasons other than sign mismatch or overflow.

  Then I tried with

      Select  cast(Col1 as nvarchar) ,

                  cast(col2 as nvarchar) from VIEW,

     I am able to get the values.

    The collation type is same for all underlying tables and also for the servers.

     Is there any restrictions in handling nvarchar data thru linked server/ anyother size limitation.

     I don't want to use cast as this will lead to performance problem.

Thanks,

Philip

Bind Grid To SQLce Data That Is Being Updated From Another Thread

Dec 17, 2007

Hi

We are building a near real time application in Windows Forms, that stores data in SQL Compact Edition.
The client receives messages via UDP socket and performs insert / update operations to the db accordingly, and the requirement is to update a data grid with the changes.

We tried querying the db and receive a ResultsSet which is sensitive and scrollable, and bind a ResultSetView to the Grid. But, since the updates are made from another thread, the grid is not being refreshed.

What is the best approach for achieving this?

Thanks in advance,

Engine Thread Property Of Data Flow Task

Apr 3, 2006

Hi guys,

The default Engine Thread property of a data flow task is set to 5, is this the best setting? what if I would like to run complex data flow tasks on multi-processor machines, should I increase the engine thread? If so, then what is the recommended Engine Thread number for running complex data flow tasks in a multi processor system?

Even if i am running simple data flow tasks on a multi processor machine, should I change the engine thread?

Thanks!

Accessing SQL Server Data From Oracle Developer 2000 Apps

Feb 17, 1999

Hello there

I have a customer that wants to start using SQL Server 7.0 instead of Oracle, but they have a lot of Oracle applications (made in Developer 2000 and Forms). Due to the big effort needed to convert those applications (to Visual Basic), they want to be able somehow to migrate only data from Oracle to SQL Server, and then use some tool that will allow them to use the same applications with the SQL Server 7.0 engine.

I found on the "SQL Server Developer's Kit" a document describing the process of migrating data and applications from Oracle to SQL Server. There is a mention to an Oracle tool called "Oracle Gateway to SQL Server" that will translate calls received by the Oracle engine to the SQL Server engine, but this approach will still require the existence of Oracle servers (which is the thing the customer no longer wants).

The second option mentioned on that document, and the one that seems more attractive, is the use of Oracle "Open Client Adapter" (OCA) that will allow Developer 2000 applications to communicate directly to SQL Server via ODBC. However, I have been unable to find (on the Oracle site) any documentation regarding this tool.

Has anynoe heard or used such tool (OCA) ? Any comments, tips, drawbacks, experience you could share ? Any other idea on how a thing like that could be accomplished ? Perhaps a third-party application that can act as a gateway between the Forms app and ODBC/SQL Server, or that will be able to generate VB code from a Developer 2000/Forms app...

Any help will be appreciated.

Please respond directly to me, as I am not a member of the distribution list.

Moving Files (split From An Existing Thread-SSIS Equivalent To DTS Transform Data Task Properties)

May 7, 2007

Hi JayH (or anyone). Another week...a new set of problems. I obviously need to learn .net syntax, but because of project deadlines in converting from DTS to SSIS it is hard for me to stop and do that. So, if someone could help me some easy syntax, I would really appreciate it.

In DTS, there was a VBScript that copied a set of flat files from one directory to an archive directory after modifying the file name. In SSIS, the directory and archive directory will be specified in the config file. So, I need a .net script that retrieves a file, renames it and copies it to a different directory.

Linda

Here is the old VBScript Code:

Public Sub Main()

Option Explicit

Function Main()

Dim MovementDataDir

Dim MovementArchiveDataDir

Dim MovementDataFile

Dim MovementArchiveDataFile

Dim FileNameRoot

Dim FileNameExtension, DecimalLocation

Dim CurMonth, CurDay

Dim FileApplicationDate

Dim fso ' File System Object

Dim folder

Dim FileCollection

Dim MovementFile

'======================================================================

'Create text strings of today's date to be appended to the archived file.

FileApplicationDate = Now

CurMonth = Month(FileApplicationDate)

CurDay = Day(FileApplicationDate)

If Len(CurMonth) = 1 Then

CurMonth = "0" & CurMonth

End If

If Len(CurDay) = 1 Then

CurDay = "0" & CurDay

End If

FileApplicationDate = CurMonth & CurDay & Year(FileApplicationDate)

'=====================================================================

' Set the movement data directory from the global variable.

MovementDataDir = DTSGlobalVariables("gsMovementDataDir").Value

MovementArchiveDataDir = DTSGlobalVariables("gsMovementDataArchiveDir").Value

fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")

folder = fso.GetFolder(MovementDataDir)

FileCollection = folder.Files

' Loop through all files in the data directory.

For Each MovementFile In FileCollection

' Get the full path name of the current data file.

MovementDataFile = MovementDataDir & "" & MovementFile.Name

' Get the full path name of the archive data file.

MovementArchiveDataFile = MovementArchiveDataDir & "" & MovementFile.Name

DecimalLocation = InStr(1, MovementArchiveDataFile, ".")

FileNameExtension = Mid(MovementArchiveDataFile, DecimalLocation, Len(MovementArchiveDataFile) - DecimalLocation + 1)

FileNameRoot = Mid(MovementArchiveDataFile, 1, DecimalLocation - 1)

MovementArchiveDataFile = FileNameRoot & "_" & FileApplicationDate & FileNameExtension

If (fso.FileExists(MovementDataFile)) Then

fso.CopyFile(MovementDataFile, MovementArchiveDataFile)

' If the archive file was coppied, then delete the old copy.

If (fso.FileExists(MovementArchiveDataFile)) Then

fso.DeleteFile(MovementDataFile)

End If

End If

Next

fso = Nothing

folder = Nothing

FileCollection = Nothing

Debugging A Worker Thread Inside SQL Server

May 5, 2006

Hi Everyone!

Just started looking into Assemblies within SQL Server in the hope of creating a multi-threaded application and when writing a basic test assembly I came across the following problem...

When I create a worker thread within my assembly I am unable to do the following in my newly created thread:

Stop on a breakpoint in VS2005
Use Debug.Writeline to output to the output window

I know the thread is running as I am able to write to the EventLog, but VS2005 seems to be unaware of any thread other than the main SQL server thread.

If anyone could tell me whether there it is possible to debug non-SQL server threads, whether I am doing something wrong, or whether I should be doing things differently that would be great!

Thanks in advance for any help!!

The code is as follows (apologies as its not very well written!):

using System;

using System.Data;

using System.Data.SqlClient;

using System.Data.SqlTypes;

using Microsoft.SqlServer.Server;

using System.Threading;

using System.Diagnostics;

public partial class StoredProcedures

{

/// <summary>

/// This stored procedure starts the comms

/// </summary>

[Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlProcedure]

public static void StartComms()

{

try

{

// Output some debug output to show the thread is running

Debug.WriteLine("Comms is starting");

// Create the thread to run in the main thread class

Thread zThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(ThreadFunction));

// Start the thread running

zThread.Start();

// Sleep to let the other one run

Thread.Sleep(2000);

// Output some debug output to show the thread is running

Debug.WriteLine("Comms is about to wait for thread to finish");

// Wait for the thread to complete

zThread.Join();

// Output some debug output to show the thread is running

Debug.WriteLine("Comms is ending");

}

catch

{

throw;

}

}

/// <summary>

/// The main thread function

/// </summary>

public static void ThreadFunction()

{

try

{

// Flag to keep thread running

bool bRunning = true;

// While the thread is running

while (bRunning == true)

{

// Output some debug output to show the thread is running

Debug.WriteLine("Thread function running");

System.Diagnostics.EventLog.WriteEntry("SQLServerThreadTest",

"Thread function is running");

// Sleep for two seconds

Thread.Sleep(5000);

}

}

catch

{

throw;

}

}

};

Unable To Connect To SQL Server Database CANNOT ACCESS THE OLD THREAD

Mar 1, 2007

I only have SQLEXPress and I have never had anything else. Therefore the question becomes - Why does the system seem to think I have another version?

Data Access :: Users Get Wrong Data Records - Cross Coupling When Accessing Files From MVC App

Aug 7, 2015

I have an MVC asp.net application that stores many records in a table on sql server, in its own system.  used the system for 2 months, worked fine accessing, changing data.

Now that other users are logging in? there is cross coupling going on.  one user gets the data from another users sql search.

In the mvc app it had used the get async method to read the ID record from the db, i set that to synchronous.  no effect;  the user makes their own login id but that does nt matter either.

SQL Server 2012 :: How To Update Master Count Column From Multi Thread Application

Sep 28, 2015

We have an application that runs Jobs, each of which affect ## number of child objects (usually around 1M). When a thread gets to 5000 updated child objects it bulk inserts into a table called ActionLog with the child Id and JobId.

When the job is complete a sproc SUMs the children from the ActionLog table:
select sum(id) from ACTIONLOG where JOBID = @JobId;

It then updates the Jobs table AffectedObjectCount column with the sum(*) from above.

Instead of writing to the ActionLog table and calculating the SUM at the end I would like to do this 'real time'. After the bulk insert I would like to update the AffectedObjectCount column with the number of rows that were just bulk inserted. I tried this in the past and ran into major contention issues. There are usually 20 threads running a job so there exists a lot of potential for deadlocks.

Is there a recommended way to handle updating one column on one row from multiple threads? What is the best practice for a counter like this?

Accessing Data Directly From A SqlDataSource?

Mar 7, 2007

First let me give you a little back ground on me.  I'm very new to the ASP, ASP.NET, Visual Studio, Sql Server, Frameworks....thing.  I am coming over from a PHP/MySql background of over 5 years.  The change over to VBScript and VB has been to tough and I have a basic liking for the Visual Studio 2005 and the ease of putting things together.  However, I have come across something that to me seems like it should be relatively simple, but haven't been able to find the documentation or samples to describe what I'm looking to do.
Rough Need:
1.  Start with a form will a couple labels and a singe textbox to get the lookup date from an user.
2.  Query one table/view based on the users choice of date and select only one field of returned data.(Doing this by itself is not a problem and I can display my results in a Gridview, but this is where it starts getting tricky and the gridviews won't work for me.)
3.  If there is something returned, I need to start a HTML table layout or possibly some form of a Gridview(I don't see how I would use the Gridview) and start a loop, adding the first returned row from this query into the first cell.
4.  Now, based on that same User Date and the returned row value from the previous query, I need to query another Table/view and return another single field, which might return 1 or multiple rows, which I need to start a loop to display unique items in cells under the first on above.
5.  Based on the original User Date and each returned row from the first query, I need to query two other Table/views and get some additional information.  4-5 fields will be returned and be displayed on one row in the number of necessary columns.
6.  This would finish the first row from the first query, so I would need to loop back up to see if there were any further results and continue looping until the get to the last of the results from the first query.
7.  Finally, I would just need to close up the Table/gridview.
The basic results I'm looking for would be similar to the following:
Results for 10/11/2005

Field name 1
Field name 2
Field name 3
Field name 4
Field name 5

First Result from query 11 of 4 results from Query 2, but only 1 unique result

It seems me from what I have read and slowly figuring out, is that I should be able to directly access the DataSet returned by four SqlDataSources, one for each of the above querys and then just write my own VB to handle the necessary looping, table format and such.  I can easily add the for SqlDataSources to the page and add a Gridview for each one and get 4 separate chunks of info, but can't see a way with GridViews to intermingle the info like displayed above.
So, if it can be done with Gridviews, then I would love to see how that is done.  But, if someone could explain to me how I access the DataSets directly that I get from the 4 SqlDataSources, then that would be ok too.  I have figured enough out with VB, that I can write the code to do my looping requirements, if I can just access the information I get back.  Thanks for reading all the way through this long post.
