Accessing A View Via ODBC
May 28, 2008
Hi all,
I'm setting up an ODBC connection for the UPS WorldShip application. I created a view for the shipment data in my database. The user account I'm using can only access the view, and when I try to connect it says there are no tables.
Is there a way to make ODBC "think" the view is a table?
TIA!

Hello,
This started as a simple thing, allow somebody to access to a database on a SQL 2005 server so they could get to it from MSAccess. I have created a login (Windows Authentication) so they can see the database and gave them "public" and "datareader" abilities.
The user then informed me that while they could see the views they could not see the data. Not being a DBA (sorry) I added "public" to the view's permissions (under properties) and granted it "Select" access and nothing else. After I completed this the user could not even see the views to pick them (via the ODBC link from MSAccess) and when I try to remove "public" from the permissions it dissapears, but when I reopen the permission "public" is back.
I then find out there is no data in the views and so the user would not have been able view anything anyway.
So what I want to do is remove "public" from the views permissions, is this possible?
Thanks for any help,
Tyrone

Hi,
I am migrating from MySQL 5 to SQL Server Express 2005 (SP1) and I am having some remote connections issues. I have tried just about everything that I have read in the forums and in Microsoft's knowledge base about remote connections with SQL Server. I am using Visual FoxPro 9 as my client and connecting with ODBC to SQL Server. The strange thing about my issue is that I can connect just fine with localhost or using my LAN IP address. Before I get to the errors, here is what I have configured:
Remote connections are allowed, TCP is active, SQL Browser service is active and running, my router forwards requests on ports 4567 (my custom port that I setup IP1 in SQL Server Configuration Manager to listen on), 1433 and 1434 (TCP and UDP for all) to my local IP address. My firewall will not block ports 4567, 1433 or 1434 (TCP and UDP for all). I even tried turning my firewall off.
For example, the following connection strings work. The first works when I am at the same computer as my SQL Server, the second works from a different computer on the same LAN.
Driver=SQL Native Client;Server=localhostsqlexpress;Database=xyz;Uid=adm;Pwd=pw
Driver=SQL Native Client;Server=192.168.1.3sqlexpress;Database=xyz;Uid=adm;Pwd=pw
When I try the following connection strings (with either my hostname or internet IP address, I get one of several failures):
Driver=SQL Native Client;Server=my.domain.comsqlexpress;Database=xyz;Uid=adm;Pwd=pw
The above strings yields this error message: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]
Driver=SQL Native Client;Server=my.domain.comsqlexpress,1433;Database=xyz;Uid=adm;Pwd=pw
Driver=SQL Native Client;Server=my.domain.comsqlexpress,4567;Database=xyz;Uid=adm;Pwd=pw
Using either the SQL default port or a custom port yields this error message: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Login timeout expired Connectivity error: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]TCP Provider: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.
The fact that I can connect with my LAN and not on the internet suggests that my ISP may be blocking port 1433. For this reason I tried to change the port my SQL Server instance was listening on but I have a feeling it isn't working.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've been stuck on this problem. Is there any way to test if my SQL server instance is actually listening on my custom defined port? Thanks in advance.

We will be converting shortly from 6.5 to 7. We have a widely
used application that currently accesses the SQL 6.5 using SQL Server
odbc driver version 2.6
Will the 2.6 driver work with 7.0 and ff not, what will we have to do to
get it work with 7.0?
Thanks for the info.

I have to troubleshoot a problem with a complex sproc that is running against a number of views that select entire tables from another "production" database. The problem we are having is that while the views should be read-only, there are no transactions, and no locking, the application's process on SQL Server is blocking anyone else who tries to write data. I'm wondering if this method of using a view as a proxy to another DB is effecting the block. The reason for doing this was to improve performance by offloading the production DB, but since it's the same instance of SQL Server, does it really matter? THX for your advice.

I have a report that accessed a Visual FoxPro 6.0 database via ODBC. Since I upgraded to Visual FoxPro 9.0, now I am getting the error:
Query Server Error
DMS-E-RBI_TABLE The table or view <table name> was not found in the dictionary
I've verified that the right path is setup and I've tried installing about every driver and none of them are working. I created a new database in 9.0 and the I can access it fine. Also, there are old tables that are accessible in the same path, just not the ones I need. Any ideas would be helpful..

We are experiencing failures when accessing a datatype="Attachments" field in a query in an MS Access 2007 database using ACE ODBC or OLEDB drivers.
We are using an MS Access 2007 database
ACE ODBC/OLEDB drivers installed (i.e. Office 2007, which installs these drivers)
DB contains a table with a field of type "Attachments" (which is new in MS Access 2007)
DB contains a query that selects the fields of the above table
Using ACE ODBC or ACE OLEDB drivers to display the table works fine. The "Attachments" field is displayed as the file name of the attachment(s).
However, using either ACE ODBC or ACE OLEDB to display the query (i.e. NOT the table) results in either incorrect results or unexpected failures of the ODBC/OLEDB drivers.
Error using ODBC (using "ODBC Test"):
=============================
select * from Query1 does not give an error, but displays a "1" for the Attachment field.
select Attachments from Query1 gives the following error:
stmt: szSqlState = "HY000", *pfNativeError = -3087, *pcbErrorMsg = 97,
*ColumnNumber = -2, *RowNumber = -2
MessageText = "[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Reserved error (|);
there is no message for this error."
Error using OLEDB (using "RowSetViewer"):
================================
select * from Query1 gives the following error:
Interface: Unknown
Result: 0x0004001 = E_NOTIMPL
FormatMessage: €œNot implemented
File: F:DepotSQLVaultmdac28sdkSamplesoledb
owsetviewerSDKobji386CRowset.cpp
Line: 616
select Attachments from Query1 gives the following error:
Interface: IID_ICommand
Result: 0x0004005 = E_FAIL
IErrorInfo: [0x0000f3f1] €œUnspecified error€?
File: F:DepotSQLVaultmdac28sdkSamplesoledb
owsetviewerSDKobji386CCommand.cpp
Line: 439
If it would help to analyze the problem, I have a folder containing all pertinent files (bare-bone database, tools, instructions) to reproduce this. I could attach it as a ZIP file, if requested.
Thanks,
Joe

Hiya folks,
I'n need to access a view from within a SProc, to see if the view returns a recordset and if it does assign one the of the fields that the view returns into a variable.
The syntax I'm using is as follows :

I keep getting an object unknown error (MyView). I've also tried calling it with the 'owner' tags.
SELECT TOP 1 @MyJobN = IJobN FROM LimsLive.dbo.MyView

How is it possible for others to browse to my localmachine and view the reports?
They tried browsing to http://machinename/reports
and http://10.1.3.123/reports
But the message the users get is: You are not authorized to view this page.
Then In my localmachine, I changed the IIS setting for the Reports and ReportServer to allow anonymous access. Then the users were able to see the Home page of the reports but not the reports themselves to click on for viewing. Any thoughts please?

Hi,
I am using VB.NET 2005 and set up an ODBC connection via ODBC.ODBCConnection to a MDB database. Therefor, I use the "Microsoft Access ODBC Driver (*.mdb)".
When I set up a ODBCCommand like "ALTER DATABASE..." or "CREATE TABLE..." and issue it with the com.ExecuteNonQuery() command, I get an error from ODBC driver, that a SQL statement has to begin with SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE.
How can I use DDL statements via ODBC?
I would appreciate if you could help me to use ODBC for that - no OLE, no ADO.
Thanks for help!

I apologize if this is not the correct forum for this posting. Looking at the descriptions, it appeared to be the best choice.
I am running Windows XP Pro SP2. I have installed the SQL Native Client for
XP. However, when I try to add a new data source through ODBC Connection
Manager, SQL Native Client is not listed as an option. I have followed this procedure on three other systems with no problems. What would be causing the
SQL Native Client to not show up in the list of available ODBC data sources?

Hi all,I am having trouble getting linked Oracle 9 server in MS SQL Server2005 Express to work properly. My machine is running Windows XP.The Microsoft and Oracle OLE DB Providers have problems dealing withOracle's Numeric Data Type, so I decided to use Microsoft's OLE DB forODBC Provider and an Oracle ODBC source. When using the Microsoft ODBCfor Oracle Driver in my ODBC source I have inconsistent behavior.Sometimes my queries are processed properly, then other times I get thefollowing errorOLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttrfailed".OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttrfailed".OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC driver for Oracle][Oracle]".Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDASQL"for linked server "ODBCBEAST".I have no idea why sometimes I can connect to the linked server with noproblems andwhy other times it performs like this. I'm not changing anything aboutthe system I can think of. When I use an Oracle client (PL/SQL) I haveabsolutely no problems connecting. TNSPING returns that the connectionis good.This is unacceptable so I decided to try my luck with the Oracle 10gODBC driver. However when I use this and perform an openquery selectagainst the linked server I get back only 11 rows, when I know that thedatabase has over 100 rows (in fact when using the Microsoft ODBCdriver and it works that's what I get). I figured maybe the buffersetting needed to be raised in the ODBC configuration so I took it from64000 to 600000 (a magnitude of 10) but I still get back only 11 rows.I'm at my wit's end.Any suggestions on resolving one or the other problem would be muchappreciated.Thanks much

Hi,
Please help share with me if you know the version compatibility matrix of Ms SQL Server, ODBC driver (sqlsrv32.dll), Driver Manager (odbc32.dll) and ODBC API spec. For instance, how can I know Ms SQL Server 2000 can work with which version of sqlsrv32.dll, a particular version of sqlsrv32.dll can work with which version of odbc32.dll and a certain version of sqlsrv32.dll/odbc32.dll conforms to which version of ODBC API spec (e.g. 3.5).
Any help will be appreciated.

I had given one of our developers create view permissions, but he wants to also modify views that are not owned by him, they are owned by dbo.
I ran a profiler trace and determined that when he tries to modify a view using query designer in SQLem or right clicks in SQLem on the view and goes to properties, it is performing a ALTER VIEW. It does the same for dbo in a trace (an ALTER View). He gets a call failed and a permission error that he doesn't have create view permissions, object is owned by dbo, using both methods.
If it is doing an alter view how can I set permissions for that and why does it give a create view error when its really doing an alter view? Very confusing.

Hi!
I have two assets: a URL that points to an XML file, and a stored procedure that can accept this file as a text variable and store it in a SQL 2005 table.
create procedure [dbo].[insertObjects]
@availabilityXml text
as
DECLARE @xmlHndAdd INT
EXEC sp_xml_prepareDocument @xmlHndAdd OUTPUT, @availabilityXml
TRUNCATE TABLE Objects
INSERT Objects
SELECT *
FROM OPENXML(@xmlHndAdd, '//NewDataSet/Table1', 2)
WITH Objects
Now, I need to find a solution to combine the URL with the proc. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can pass my URL as a text variable to the procedure? SSIS, vb-script, etc. are welcome!
Thank you!

I am trying to execute an SSIS package (which accesses a dbf file through an odbc connection) through a Sql job, but the package log reports an error of "Disk or netowrk error". When I execute the package in the IDE, the package executes fine. When I run the manifest on the DB server, I can execute the package with no errors. But, when I create the job, and try to execute the job, it fails. I thought at first that the user didn't have privileges to the directory that the file existed in, but that isn't the case.
Can anyone shed some light on how to accomplish what I am trying to accomplish? It seems like this would be a common use of SSIS, but I cannot seem to get it to work.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide!

Hi, I am developing a small asp.net application where I read from a readonly omnis database via odbc then dependant on user input write records to a second database.My first idea was to use an odbc connection to Omnis database and write to ms sql database. There is quite a few queries that need to be made to the Omnis database and I am binding a datagrid to the MS Sql server database. I was hoping to use stored procedures to update the mssql tables. So there will be much opening and closing of connections. Should I go down that road or should i think of using an Access database, with linked table to the Omnis database, then only one connection needs to be made. And I can store my information in the Access database tables. Thanks.

I also tried using ORBER BY followed by LIMIT but kept getting an error in order by clause message.

Hi
If my site is hosted with an external company web host can I use ASP.NET pages to connect to a MS SQL DB that is on my company's internal server if I had MS SQL installed on it?
My company's server is always on and always connected to the internet.
I have access to my company's server if I need to set anything up on it for this to happen.
There will not be any kind of overload as the site is not accessed constantly.
Also, would this cause any kind of security leak? If so how would I go about plugging this hole?
Our server does have confidential info on it.
Cheers

I'm using OLEDB in my ASP code to connect to the SQL database. When I execute the page I got an error saying "438, Microsoft VBScript runtime error, Object doesn't support this property or method"
Anybody knows what this is in reference to.
I tested the same site in another server where IIS and SQL are in the same box and it's working fine.
Thanks for any input in this......
