Accessing Webservice W/ Custom Dll - WebPermission Request Fails
Feb 21, 2007
I'm running rs2005 sp2, and the dll was made with .net 1.1. Before, there were no issues with this version crossing of .net 1.1 and 2.0.
In the RS IDE, the webservice call works fine. I've read that this execution is done with full trust - so I've tried to tackle the CAS issue.
When I try to call the webservice from the dll, I catch the exception, and it's:
Request for the permission of type 'System.Net.WebPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.
Now what confuses me is, why is the version of WebPermission 2.0 when the dll is 1.1? Maybe there is translation done and the dll is really run w/ the 2.0 framework?
Anyways, this I've done are:
* Added this right before my webservice call. Is something missing?
// We need to ensure that this library is permitted to access the webservice url
// http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;842419
System.Text.RegularExpressions.Regex urlRegEx = new System.Text.RegularExpressions.Regex(@"http://server/.*");
System.Net.WebPermission p = new System.Net.WebPermission(NetworkAccess.Connect, urlRegEx);
p.Assert();
* Gave the 'All_Code' group permission of full trust in both .net 1.1 and 2.0 configurations to see if it helped - it did not, and I checked the report after I did an iisreset. This should have done it!!
* I also tried changing: rsmgrpolicy.config and rssrvpolicy.config
and updated these lines to have version 2.0.0.0:
<SecurityClass Name="SecurityPermission" Description="System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089"/>
<SecurityClass Name="WebPermission" Description="System.Net.WebPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089"/>
iisreset was done, and the code executed was still complaining about the permission request failing for WebPermission.
* These blocks were added to rsmgrpolicy.config and rssrvpolicy.config, in respective sections:
<CodeGroup class="UnionCodeGroup"
version="1"
PermissionSetName="CompanyPermissionSet"
Name="CompanyRS"

Hello, I am trying to schedule a report using the ReportingService2005 web service. It works in my local machine, but as soon as I deploy my web app to a server I get this exception:
System.Net.WebException: The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized.

at ReportScheduling.SaveSubscription(String SubscriptionID, String ReportName, Int32 ReportID)
at ReportScheduling.ScheduleReport()
I see that a lot of people are having the same problem but no solutions are given, Answers like "use the default credentials" . Or "pass a user name and a password" are not doing anything. This has got to be a machine setting. Can anyone share the specific fix? Sad that this is not in Microsoft's standard documentation or MSDN. Very frustating.

Is it possible to access a webservice from within SQL 2005?What I am looking to do is place a trigger on a specific table, and detect if a specific column is being updated. If it is, I want to launch a robust process that does x, y and z. Something like this:1) record is updated indicating that an account is closed.2) SQL launched a webservice/ aspx page that builds an HTML email template and then mail it.thanks!

I just added a .asmx webservice to my project.
When i try to retrieve some information of the database using the webservice, despite using the same code as in a code behind .aspx file, it doesn't work.SqlConnection conn =
new SqlConnection(System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["LocalSqlServer"].ConnectionString);DataTable dt = new DataTable();
conn.Open();
String sql = "SELECT * FROM aspnet_Users";
//But i would suggest you to use parameterize queries or SP for security reasonsSqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(sql, conn);cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();SqlDataAdapter ad = new SqlDataAdapter(cmd);
ad.Fill(dt);
conn.Close();
Using this code in .aspx.cs it works, but in my .asmx it doesn't. The 'cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()' returns '-1' in the .asmx.
I have to use the webservice because i have a Silverlight client in my application, whichs has to retrieve data from the database.
Any ideas why it works for the .aspx.cs and not for the .asmx file?

Geekz,
My problem is that , I had setup blog on server say, blog.xyz.com [I am using blogengine.net, which is in ASP.Net]. It is using sql server2005 as a backend for storing its blog's posts. After settingup blog, i tried to access its database through my windows application. But while development I was getting error that
"An error has occured while establishing a onnection to the server. When connecting to SQL server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the defaukt settings SQL server doesnot allow remote connections.(Provider Named Pipes, error :40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)"
I am using [String ConnectionString = "Data Source=sql-v123.mesa11.1Server.net; Initial Catalog=abc; User ID=xyz; Password=xyz123";]
Then I decided to created a webservice that will access the data from databse blog and store it somewhere in datatable and using windows application i will retrieve those data for end user. So I want to to know that whether i can access the datatable of webservice holding the blog data from windows application or not. if answer is Yes, then please provide me with source or some great links. Or if There is any other option so that I can access my database directly from windows application, then it would be better. Looking for your answers.
Thanks and regards

Hi,
Given that Task.Validate() exposes the package's VariableDispenser, but LogProviderBase.Validate() doesn't...
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/fr-fr/library/microsoft.sqlserver.dts.runtime.task.validate.aspx
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/fr-fr/library/microsoft.sqlserver.dts.runtime.logproviderbase.validate.aspx
...I guess that simply means that I can't access a package's variables within a custom log provider? Can anyone comment/confirm? Any other options/routes to achieving the same..?
We live in hope,
Tamim.

As far as I can make out it is not possible to access the variables collection from a custom log provider.
I'm interested to know what the rationale for this is. Why aren't the variables available for logging purposes?

Hi,
My report has multiple datasets, and I want to access the fields of a particular dataset from custom code. The problem is that the name of the dataset to use is only calculated during the execution of the custom code.
Allow me to illustrate:
public function Test(data as DataSets, fieldName as string)dim datasetName as string = CalculateDatasetName()dim ds as Dataset = data(datasetName)' now here I want to get the fieldName out of the dataset.' in the report, I would do something like
' First(Fields!fieldName.Value, datasetName)' but in custom code, this obviously doesn't work.end function
I've been looking for a way to accomplish this, but it seems you cannot get data from a dataset through custom code (there is only the commandtext property). Also it is not possible to pass the Fields collection as a parameter, as I do not know the dataset name when in the report designer.
I hope my problem description is clear.
Does anyone know how to solve this issue?
Thanks,
Phil

We use reporting services to report on our SQL 2005.
I wanted to have a function that translates a filter (parameter) in one RDL from IDs to Names to be able to show a summary of what the user selected when he executed the report.
Instead of writing this function in the .Code, I said great, lets use custom assemblies.
PROBLEM: I see examples on how to enable a function in such dll access to DB, but they all hardcode the connection string in the vb code. that seems useless to me. Each customer will have different server name, I need to get the connection string from the sme (shared data source) used in the catalog's folder. just like the RDl is using it. how do I do that?

Hello:
I have a package which runs fine from the client but not the server (see error below). I am logged into the client with my domain account, and the package runs under a proxy using that same domain account (for now). The MS Access db I am trying to pull from is on a non-domain computer, and I have created a Y: mapped drive on both the client and server that access a share on that machine where the Access database lives--I created the mapped drive using the "different user" option, and used a local account on the non-domain computer to create the mapped drives.
On the server, when logged in as my domain account, I can use the y:MyDB.mdb you can see below in Start | Run to hit the Access database. Why can't the package also see this file when running on the server?

I have created a job in SQL Server 2000 that pulls all billing information from the db, writes it to a text file, and emails it to accounting. It must decrypt the cc numbers, though, and that's where it fails. Whenever I try to create the object, it barfs this back at me in the job history:
Error Code: 0 Error Source= Microsoft VBScript runtime error Error Description: Object variable not set: 'CreateObject' Error on Line 0. The step failed.
If I plug in 'createobject("adodb.connection")', it will work, but putting in 'createobject("custom.object") fails. I verfied that the DLLs are registered. I have run the script as an ASP page, and it works dandy. Does SQL Server have an issue with cutom DLLs?
Thanks in advance.

I have a SSIS package that has a script component. In the script I reference a custom dll that contains some functions.
The dll is registerd with a strong name in the GAC on my machine and the SQL Server 2005 box.
The package works fine in Visual Studio. The problem lies when I deploy the package to the server. (note: several other packages created without the dll work fine on the server).
Is there something else that has to be configured on the server to be able to reference and use the custom dll?
Thanks for your help.

When replicating a table which has an identity column I get the error: "Procedure cp_insert_tblname expects parameter @C1, which was not supplied.". The stored procedure appears to be called without any parameters so my insert stored procedure does not work. I know I'm missing something basic here!! Do I have to add the field names when telling replication to use a custom stored procedure. If not, how do arguments get passed to my SP, as globals somehow?
Any info greatly appreciated!!

I can see my machine listed in the Server Name > Browse For More > Local Servers dialogue. But no luck,
Ive tried:
Servername: localhost
Servername: DED1774 (the machine name)
Servername: localhost/reportserver
Servername: DED1774/reportserver
Servername: http://ded1774/reportserver (from the rsreportserver.config file

I've Googled the error message and found postings for solutions, but none of these helped. Can anyone suggest some simple steps I can take to try to find the issue and get the connection working?

Hi,
I am creating a custom transformation component, and a custom user interface for that component.
In
my custom UI, I want to show the custom properties, and allow users to
edit these properties similar to how the advanced editor shows the
properties.
I know in my UI I need to create a "Property Grid".
In
the properties of this grid, I can select the object I want to display
data for, however, the only objects that appear are the objects that I
have already created within this UI, and not the actual component
object with the custom properties.
How do I go about getting the properties for my transformation component listed in this property grid?
I am writing in C#.

Hi,
I've created a Custom Data Flow Component and added some Custom Properties.
I want the user to set the contents using an expression. I did some research and come up with the folowing:
Code Snippet
IDTSCustomProperty90 SourceTableProperty = ComponentMetaData.CustomPropertyCollection.New();
SourceTableProperty.ExpressionType = DTSCustomPropertyExpressionType.CPET_NOTIFY;
SourceTableProperty.Name = "SourceTable";
But it doesn't work, if I enter @[System:ackageName] in the field. It comes out "@[System:ackageName]" instead of the actual package name.
I'm also unable to find how I can tell the designer to show the Expression editor. I would like to see the elipses (...) next to my field.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you

Hi,
I'm trying to enable Expression for a custom property in my custom data flow component.
Here is the code I wrote to declare the custom property:
public override void ProvideComponentProperties()
{
ComponentMetaData.RuntimeConnectionCollection.RemoveAll();
RemoveAllInputsOutputsAndCustomProperties();
IDTSCustomProperty90 prop = ComponentMetaData.CustomPropertyCollection.New();
prop.Name = "MyProperty";
prop.Description = "My property description";
prop.Value = string.Empty;
prop.ExpressionType = DTSCustomPropertyExpressionType.CPET_NOTIFY;
...
}
In design mode, I can assign an expression to my custom property, but it get evaluated in design mode and not in runtime
Here is my expression (a file name based on a date contained in a user variable):
"DB" + (DT_WSTR, 4)YEAR( @[User::varCurrentDate] ) + RIGHT( "0" + (DT_WSTR, 2)MONTH( @[User::varCurrentDate] ), 2 ) + "\" + (DT_WSTR, 4)YEAR( @[User::varCurrentDate] ) + RIGHT( "0" + (DT_WSTR, 2)MONTH( @[User::varCurrentDate] ), 2 ) + ".VER"
@[User::varCurrentDate] is a DateTime variable and is assign to 0 at design time
So the expression is evaluated as: "DB189912189912.VER".
My package contains 2 data flow.
At runtime,
The first one is responsible to set a valid date in @[User::varCurrentDate] variable. (the date is 2007-01-15)
The second one contains my custom data flow component with my custom property that was set to an expression at design time
When my component get executed, my custom property value is still "DB189912189912.VER" and I expected "DB200701200701.VER"
Any idea ?

I am writing a custom task that has some custom properties. I would like to parameterize these properties i.e. read from a varaible, so I can change these variables from a config file during runtime.
I read the documentation and it says if we set the ExpressionType to CPET_NOTIFY, it should work, but it does not seem to work. Not sure if I am missing anything. Can someone please help me?
This is what I did in the custom task
customProperty.ExpressionType = DTSCustomPropertyExpressionType.CPET_NOTIFY;
In the Editor of my custom task, under custom properties section, I expected a button with 3 dots, to click & pop-up so we can specify the expression or at least so it evaluates the variables if we give @[User::VaraibleName]
Any help on this will be very much appreciated.

I created a custom DTS object that does its work by calling awebservice. When you create the object in DTS, it lets you set theuser/pw you want to use to authenticate to the webservice. The problemI am having is that once I authenticate to the webservice within DTS,it always uses the same authentication when contacting the service.So, for example, I drop a new instance of my object into a package. Itconnects to the webservice as me. I set up the parameters of the task,including telling it to connect as User="test". If I run it, my codesets the credentials correctly on the webservice, but the webservicestill gets called as me.If I exit out of SQL Server and go back in, and run it, it correctlyconnects as User="test". But then if I try to edit the task, and givemy own user and password, it still always tries to connect as "test".It seems whoever I initially connect to the webservice as, that is theinformation that DTS will use for the entire session.Is there any way to do what I want to do?thanks

After creating a WebService using SQL Server 2005 HTTP Endpoints I can only browse to the wsdl file using localhost address and not via the machine name
For example http://MACHINENAME/SomeWebService?wsdl will ask for some authentication that can never be determined while
http://localhost/SomeWebService?wsdl will successfully generate the WSDL file
This happens on the actual machine and on all other machines in the domain which pretty much defeats the purpose of using Web Services to expose functionality.
Does anyone have any idea regarding
(a) what security features are at work here,
(b) Where are they documented
(c) How to set or use them in such a manner as to actually be able to use web services.
While investigating I have noticed that all examples conveniently use localhost and so either avoid or never address this issue.
Any suggestions appreciated.

I have noticed what seems to be a bug in Reports using an XML Webservice for a datasource.
I have the data source setup and working to query an XML webservice. All fields aren't always populated - so after the intial step that automatically builds your dataset and sets up the field names - I went in and manually added the remaining missing fields (which were blank).
Then I setup the report - dragging/dropping fields from the dataset.
I thought everything was working fine, UNTIL i noticed that IF the FIRST record contains ANY blank fields - ALL of those fields (on every record returned) show blank on the report.
For example my webservice might return something like this:
Code Snippet
<Root>
<Parent>
<Child_Name>Joe</Child_Name>
<Child_ID></Child_ID>
</Parent>
<Parent>
<Child_Name>Tim</Child_Name>
<Child_ID>123456</Child_ID>
</Parent>
</Root>
But when my report actually runs, it doesn't show any value for the second record:
My Report
Child_Name Child_ID
Joe
Tim
In this case, Tim should actually show the Child_ID value, but apparently because the first record didn't have a value - the report assumes NO RECORDS will have a value and doesn't bother printing them.
But if I run the report so that the first record DOES contain that field - then everything seems fine.
I can see that my Dataset hasn't changed - as it still contains all the fieldnames (even the ones that sometimes return empty).
Am I doing something wrong?
