I want to set up a database role so that users can use sp_readerrorlog through SSMS. It does a check on membership in the securityadmin role.
I have tested it and can see you can grant execute on xp_readerrorlog but the SSMS GUI uses sp_readerrorlog.
I thought I could create a user/certificate and add the signature to sp_readerrorlog but it's not permitted (likely because it's not a normal database object).
So the other solution is to add the users to the securityadmin role but then explicitly deny alter any login (best done with a custom server role in 2012+ but otherwise just manually in 2008). I tested this out and it works, I'm not able to alter any logins or increase my own permissions, I also did a check of what's reported from fn_my_permissions(null, null) and it shows minimal permissions like I'd expect.

I recently enabled log shipping on our production database, and I had initially accepted the default of 72 hours to delete copied logs. Well, i am running out of space quick, and I need to edit it to something like 6 hours.
When I try to disable log shipping in order to recreate it, or if I try to edit the secondary server settings when I am logged in as SA, or my windows account which has the sysadmin role assigned, I get an error that says:
Only members of the sysadmin fixed server role can perform this operation. Error 21089.
I've restarted the sql service, disabled and enabled the permission on my account, but for the life of me, i cannot get this to work!

I have the following setup:
- An MSSQL 2014 Standard server that houses multiple small databases (in excess of a hundred).
- These databases are frequently dropped and restored by an application that uses this SQL Server.
- There is a business need for this setup at this time, so I can't get away from it. Therefore answers like "don't have so many small databases that are frequently dropped and restored" would be somewhat unuseful
This is the problem I have:
- When I connect SSMS 2014 to the server and expand the "Databases" node, it takes forever to display. In comparison, SSMS 2008 connected to SQL 2008R2 server with the same number of databases displays the Databases tree very quickly.
I ran a trace to see what exactly SSMS 2014 is doing. When the "Databases" node is expanded, it runs a query that checks each database for Memory-Optimized Tables (new and wonderful feature of SQL 2014 for sure, but I'm not using it, at least yet). Naturally, when you have to loop through over a hundred DBs, it takes time. Worse yet, if one of these DBs is in process of being restored, the query sits and waits to time out before proceeding to the next DB. Sometimes this causes outright timeouts. Here is the query:
use [MyDatabase]
SELECT
ISNULL((select top 1 1 from sys.filegroups FG where FG.[type] = 'FX'), 0) AS [HasMemoryOptimizedObjects]
To be sure, this is NOT a SQL Server performance issue. This server processes a rather heavy workload and has been doing so for over a month, and the workload completes within expected time limits or better. Even so I've done some basic performance measuring, and the server itself is quite all right.
Moreover, if I connect SSMS 2008 to it, I get an error message (Index out of bounds or somesuch), but SSMS 2008 does connect, and displays the Databases tree much faster than SSMS 2014.
I'd like to turn off the option to check for Memory Optimized Objects altogether, as I'm not using the feature.

HI all,
I would like to ONLY allow using SQL Server authentication and restrict Windows Authentication. At the moment, i set the security to "SQL server and windows authentication". Now, even though i set the password for "sa", i can ignore the SQL Server authentication and just use Windows authentication to manipulate database objects???
can anybody give some suggestions to restrict windows authentication and allow sql server authentication?.
Thanks in Advance

I've been trying to get my website back up and running, I lost the db and will have to reconstruct that but in the meantime I would like to get the website back in operation right now I have the following problems.
I receive an error message when trying to create a new user in the web admin tool. see 1A
or I receive another error message saying that the administrator is not authorized to sign onto the db
and I seem to have the authorization settings incorrect for the hashed password settings I had...
Ive looked back through my notes and the last time this happened I created a new database with the web admin tool but my settings are such that this still doesn't eliminate the error messages. Right now the website is in a cannot find server mode.
Thanks for your help.

Still having a problem. does anyone answer these forums? Since Microsoft is not offering support on VWD 2005 and it sends you to these forums for answers don't you think that they should staff the forums? for at least a modicum of support. Who - ever heard of a product being released without a repair system in place? HELP REQUESTED.

The NT Event Viewer for our SQL Server machine, constantly logs the error:
18456: Login failed for user 'Admin'
I don't have a user or group called 'Admin' in either NT User Manager or in SQL Server users.
Event Viewer tells me that:
Source: MSSQLServer.
Computer: SERVER_SQL (The NT 4 SQL Server machine)
Type: Information
Category: Logon
My I.T. Manager would like me to get rid of the event.
Any suggestions please as to where it is coming from and how I can get rid of it?
Thanks

Is SQL Server sensitive to Domain group name? Like "Domain Admin"?
I have user that belong to "myDomainDomain Admin" group. Group is in SQL as sysadmin but user cannot login using domain credentials. When I move that user to a different domain group which that group is in SQL again as sysadmin my user is able to login.
Environment: SQL 2008 Standard Edition.

Someone stumped me with a question the other day. And I was wanting to know if my answer was accurate.
They were worried about locking up SQLServer with too many queries when accessing it through a web page.
I haven't actually had this problem with any of the stuff I have done. And I never had it happen way back when I was just doing database stuff either.
I suppose this happens when a query is run that the stored procedure conflict and end up getting locked up because neither query can finish their process until the other lets the tables go. So one way to avoid this is to make sure dangerous queries are never done through the web interface. Right can do but
and the other thing I was wondering about it how they balance queries on the server. I know about testing the equipment to find out which queries work the best and how to create a good normalized database you know good structure etc. (is this why I never had this problem or is it more because I did have a ton of different people accessing the data all at once -- but if they are accessing it in a controlled fashion then whats the worry right?)
Since I don't know how to cause this exactly-- I don't know how to prevent it.
Any clues?

Hi!
Is there any way I can resore a specified set of deleted rows from a table? Most of these rows were created during the course of the day, but at the end a user deleted them accidentally. My latest full backup is from last night, but if I restore it, it will overwrite many other tables that already have correct informaiton entered during the day. Is there any to roll back only the transaction with which the rows were deleted?

hi,
so i have a new box and I'm trying to get my websites and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition working on it, but the pages give me the following error when I try to load them:
"Cannot Open Database "XXXX" requested by login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'xxx'"
Everything seems exactly the same settings and user-wise from my old box to my new one, but nevertheless everything I've tried gives me the same error.
I've tried creating new users in SQL Server and giving them appropriate permissions to my database. I've even tried just using the built in 'sa' account. Nothing seems to change the error, except when I give it the incorrect password then it just says 'login failed'
This leads me to believe that i'm successfully logging into the SQL Server, but it doesn't want to give me access to the database I'm requesting access too. But "apparently" the account i'm using should have access to the database. If nothing else the 'sa' account should, but that didn't work either.
I'm stumped. Any ideas?
