I am unable to add a new user like 'xxxASPNET' to the Users under Security from AdventureWorks Database. I edited the SQL query which is "sp_grantlogin 'XXXXASPNET' " . It was completed successfully but was not able to add it to the Users.

View 1 Replies View RelatedEverything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server.
I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah.
Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that?

A user was created with a limited privilege under the USERS group. Once this user loged in the Report Manager he is acting like an Admin and Content Manager, though he is not given even a browser role.
What do u think that this guy is acting like a Super User evenif he is restricted to a browser role on the Report Manager ????????????

For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area":
(1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the
following: Select Computer
The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer.
Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer
O Remote computer
Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option?

Okay, I've read massive topics on ClickOnce, and embedded database applications, etc, etc.
I need a handful of good suggestions how I can create a deployment package, to get my sql express database onto a SQL Express server.
The database will need to be multi-user, because I am also developing a WinForms application to connect to the SQL Express database.
I'm thinking I need to use some automated scripting features, to generate scripts for the database once I am done (unless you have a better suggestion).
After that, I need to know what to do with those scripts, and how can I create a setup / deployment packages to run those scripts against a SQL Express server.
The other alterntative obviously is to copy my sql express database, and run an attach command. This will work the first time, only because this will have been the first deployment of this database.
Please keep in mind when answering this question, that I will not be embedding the database, and as far as I understand ClickOnce is a feature for use with embedded databases or user instance databases (not sure).

I do not understand the concepts and procedures to do Xcopy and User Instances for non-administrators completely-I do not know how to connect to databases and create database diagrams or schemas using the Database Explorer. I have created a ChemDatabase with 3 dbo tables in the SQL Server Management Studio of my SQL Server Express and a website of my VWD Express application with an App_Data folder. I am not able to proceed to use Xcopy and user instance to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase to my App_Data folder. Hi there. I am new to the SQL Express. I just finished installing the SQL Express 2005 with Advanced Services on a Windows XP SP2 computer. The first thing I noticed was the service manager (used to be on the taskbar) was being removed on the Express Edition. How do I get this feature back if it's even possible? I know you can find out the server status from the Configuration Manager but it's handy if the status is showned on the taskbar after logging in.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have SQL Server 2005 Express installed on a windows server 2003 standard edition. I have configured the windows firewall to allow exceptions for sqlservr.exe and sqlbrowser.exe. I have enabled remote and local connections using tcp/ip & Named Pipes through the Sql Server Surface Area Connection utility. I am able to telnet into the server with: telnet <server ip> <1433>.
Here is the strange part: I am able to connect to the Sql Server remotely from a development machine via Sql Server Management Studio Express, but I am unable to connect to the Sql Server from the same development machine by registering it in Sql Server Enterprise Manager...Is it possible to register SQL Express through Enterprise Manager?
When registering the SQL Express DB in Enterprise Manager I tried both just the (IP Address) of the server and the (IP AddressSQLExpress) as the server/host but I am getting the following errors from enterprise manager:
Just the (IP Address) as the server/host:
Invalid Connection.
ConnectionOpen( Invalid Instance())
(IP AddressSQLEXPRESS) as the server/host:
Sql Server does not exist or access denied. ConnectOpen(Connect()).
Any idea why I can€™t register/mount the instance remotely in Enterprise Manager
but I can in Sql Server Management Studio Express?

I was wondering if i install sql server management studio express (05) on a pc with enterprise manager(00) on it, if that will upgrade the enterprise manager? I was hoping to have them installed side by side so that i can manage my sql server 2000 dbs on a server with enterprise manager and manage a sql express 05 db i have on another pc with the managment studio.Thanks!

I'm a newbie to Reporting Services so please forgive my ignorance...
I've recently installed SQL Server Express 2005 with Reporting Services on my Vista Business Notebook (with no network connections) and have installed VS C# Express as well as the Business Intelligence Studio to create reports.
My C# application can connect to SQL Server fine, however, the reports I created with Business Studio refuses to deploy to the server due to the following reason:
"The permissions granted to user 'localhostJenny' are insufficient for
performing this operation".
I find this odd as I've been able to deploy reports on my other Windows XP machine (with SQL Server Express) no probs at all. Additionally, I cannot see the 'Site settings' link within Report Manager (Web) that I'd normally get with an admin account (i.e. on my Win. XP machine). Various sources indicate that my account has insufficient access rights to view this.
Having browsed through seemingly endless blogs and forums, I suspect that my local account has not been configured to access the Report Manager web client to publish, manage and administer the site.
I have tried the surface area tool for SQL Server, but I suspect that this is relevant only to SQL Server DB access and management. Adding an administrator here does nothing.
The question is, how can I grant access to myself (local account) to allow me to publish reports via business studio, and at the same time - administer Report Manager Site Settings - on my vista notebook??
I would be extremely grateful for any help on this matter - I've tried ceaseless reinstallations, but to no avail!

Ok, I need to add aspnet user to my database in SQL Server express. I have the SQL Server Mangament Tool Express CTP that i am using to do it.Anyway when i go to add the permissions for my user to the table I type it in and it returns back that there is no user that exists with that name. I then went to the top level for SQL Server Express and it has the ASPNET user. I don't understand why the engine itself can see it and use it but not my individual database.

I am a new to SQL server express, although i have been using SQL server 2003 for development purpose. I just recently installed express and would like to connect to it but can't. I've downloaded and installed SQL Server 2005, SQL Server Management Studio Express, SQL Server Native Client, MSXML 6.0 Parser and .Net Framework 2.0.
When i setup my ODBC driver and test the connection i get the "test failed" message:

What rights do users require to be able to use SQL Server Express?? I receive errors when the user doesn't have full admin rights. Our users cannot have admin rights all the time on their PCs. Errors below:

I've set up a website on another computer using sql server express and visual web developer express, and it works as expected. However halfway through the development i've had to move to another computer. I installed visual web developer express + sql server express, and copied the project files across, but now when I attempt to run it I get the error:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a

I just started evaluation of the server and meet the fist problem. I searched the forum however most answers related to use SQL Server manager and security tab. Note I use the express edition which has no manager, but only configuration manager. There is no security tab. So can somebody help in setting up trusted accounts for SQL server express edition?

If I try to open the .mdf while the website is still running, I get a message stating that the file is in use. If I shut down the web service and open the .mdf, then restart the website, then the website cannot access the .mdf while I have it open in VStudio (reminds me a lot of Access).
In the past I tried to open a user instance with SQL Server Management Studio, but then it goofed up my user-instance...so I am hesitant to try that again. Is there any way to re-index?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI originally installed SQL Server Express 2005 on my computer using Windows Authentication mode, and discovered when I tried to add another user/login that I didn't have permission to do so. This is rather odd as the windows account that I installed SQL server with is the system admin for the computer.
I have successfully changed the login mode to mixed, and have tried to login in as "sa", but it appears that "sa" was given some sort of password (did SQL server automatically generate one?), and I don't know what it is. When I go into command prompt and try to change the password, it says that it cannot alter the login 'sa' because it does not exist or I do not have permission (i'm pretty sure it's the later, as 'sa' shows up on the list of logins in SQL server express).
I'm so stuck! Please help!

I have an ASP.NET application, which is part of a work based project. I am developing in Visual Web Developer and my database is SQL 2005 Express (SP2). I cannot get the database to log in.
This is because my account is not an admin, as Vista disables SQL Admin rights by default...
So the Surface Area Configuration tool has the "Add New Administrator" tool.
I go to use it, it shows me the list on the left, i hit the button to shift it across to the right, sure enough, no problems. I hit OK. It does nothing. This is on Vista, on an Adminitrator account with all prieveleges. I have tried it with UAC turned on and turned off.
No matter what i do, it doesnt give me the rights. If i open the SQLProv tool again, all the list has shifted back into the left panel, as if the form never submitted.
The tool gives me no errors or alerts.
What am i doing wrong?
PS: I can definitely connect into the database.
I am new to SQL Server but have been using Access to provide Multi-User acces to a central data store. We are evaluating the replacement of Access with SQL Server. With Access we don't need any special installation; I believe that the Jet Database Engine installed locally on each user's PC allows them to work with this in a disconnected manner; we use ADO.net 2.0 with VB.net 2005.
If each user has a locally installed SQL Server Express can they all attach to a database that resides on a shared network location?
In another post on the Forum I see the following regarding multi-user access:

Hello, I'll try to make the description of this multi-problem scenario as short and sweet as possible.
First Problem
The default named instance of "SQLEXPRESS" was somehow installed on my machine and nothing can get rid of it. However, it is somehow invisible to everything else on my system, so I can't use it. How do I get rid of the instance or repair it?
Second problem
I installed another instance of the SQL Server 2005 Express and named it, "SQLEXPRESS02". I attached a database to it and successfully retrieved data from it using an application that used the following connection string:
Data Source=(local)sqlexpress02;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|MyDatabase.mdf;Initial Catalog=MyDatabase;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True
Next, I tried to use a different application to retrieve data from a copy of the same database located in a different directory and used the same connection string as that shown above. When I do this, I receive an error message similar to the following:
Database 'C:PathToMyOriginalProjectinDebugMyDatabase.mdf' already exists. Choose a different database name.
Cannot attach the file 'C:PathToMyNewProjectinDebugMyDatabase.mdf' as database 'MyDatabase'.
I then tried, out of curiosity, to change the Initial Catalog portion of the connection string to "MyDatabase2" and attempt the data retrieval again. The connection string looked like this:
Data Source=(local)sqlexpress02;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|MyDatabase.mdf;Initial Catalog=MyDatabase2;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True
Interestingly enough, it worked. However, when I switched back to the original connection string, I got the same error message as before.
What's going on here? I thought that one of the virtues of user instances was that they would attach at run-time, then disconnect when the application was through with them. If that's the case, then why am I getting errors stating that a database of the same name is already attached? Is there a way to detach these databases from a user instance? Can it be done by some value in the connection string?

When the non-administrator user tries run the SSEMS, he gets an error, something like "Cannot load the SQL Management Studio Package".

Then I change the password and it gets accepted. When I try my web application, I get the dreaded "login failed for <loginname>". I look at the properties again and see my password never change. Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
I noticed that in my C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLTemplate Data I have not databases? How do I get them back?
I also had to add back the aspnet to the permissions and the network and network service to the app_data folder.
Can any one help?
