Adding A Group By Clause And Getting A Count Of A Group

Feb 6, 2008

Hi

I am new to SQL and am having a problem. I need to fix my query to do the following...

2) get a total of the number of rows returned.

DECLARE @StartDate varchar(12)
DECLARE @EndDate   varchar(12)
DECLARE @Region    varchar(20)

SET @StartDate = '01/01/2002'
SET @EndDate   = '12/31/2008'
SET @Region    = 'Central'

SELECT
A.createdon,
A.casetypecodename,
A.subjectidname,
A.title,
A.accountid,
A.customerid,
A.customeridname,
B.new_Region,
B.new_RegionName

FROM  dbo.FilteredIncident A
INNER JOIN dbo.FilteredAccount B ON A.customerid = B.accountid

WHERE (A.createdon >=@StartDate  AND A.createdon <= @EndDate)
AND   (B.new_RegionName = @Region)
AND   (A.casetypecode = 2)

How?: Group By Date And Count Rows In Group

Jan 29, 2007

I'm new to MSSQL 2005 and want to get a summary of a log table. I want to count all the rows for each date based on a DATETIME field called 'post_date' that holds the date and time of each record's creation.

this is the best I can come up with:

Code:

SELECT
DISTINCT(LEFT(post_date,11)) AS post_date, COUNT(DISTINCT(LEFT(post_date,11))) AS total_posts
FROM log_directory_contacts
GROUP BY post_date

The results show each date but the count column ('total_posts') returns '1' for every row even when I know their are more than 1 record on that date.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

Adding SubTotol Of A Group To Group

Sep 6, 2007

Here is my Table Structure ( from Oracle database)
Team | Customer Code | Amount | Credit Limit
1 , a, 100, 1000
1 , a , 200, 1000
1 , b, 100, 100
1, b, 1000, 100
1, b, 2000, 100
2, a, 100, 2000

For the Report, I want to group the Team and Sum each customer total Amount and Show the Exceed limit amount.
Here I want to present
Team Customer Code Amount Credit Limit Exceed
1 a 300 1000 0
1 b 3100 100 3000
Team Total 3300 3000
2 a 100 2000 0
Team Total 100 0
Total 3400 3000

BUT it turn out..
Team Customer Code Amount Credit Limit Exceed
1 a 300 1000 0
1 b 3100 100 3000
Team Total 3300 2300 ( Problem here a )
2 a 100 2000 0
Team Total 100 0 ( Problem here a )
Total 3400 2400 ( Problem here b)

I Grouped the Custoer Code and Team I can preform the sum
however I can't Do the Exceed total
becoz the value should be
iif (Sum(amount)>(Creditlimt) , Sum(amount)-First(Creditlimt), 0)
but for the team total in team 1 the result is 2300 ( 3300 - customer a 's limit) not add from exceed amount
And the finial total it turns out 2400 (3400 - 1000)

I have tried use the coding to sum up the exceed
but I found that the group total is sumup first than the sum up the detail :

Team Customer Code Amount Credit Limit Exceed
1 a 300 1000 0
1 b 3100 100 3000
Team Total 3300 0
2 a 100 2000 0
Team Total 100 3000 ( The Total from Team 1 ! )
Total 3400 0 ( Problem here b)

this situration , I can't change the query statement
I can do the good result for CR report
but for reporting service 2005, I can't to the first report result
Any one can help me ??
thank you

Reporting Services :: Display Group Name Value Of Each Group In Column Header Outside The Group?

Sep 29, 2015

I have an SSRS 2012 table report with groups; each group is broken ie. one group for one page, and there are multiple groups in multiple pages.

'GroupName' column has multiple values - X,Y,Z,......

I need to group 'GroupName' with X,Y,Z,..... ie value X in page 1,value Y in page 2, value Z in page 3...

Now, I need to display another column (ABC) in this table report (outside the group column 'GroupName'); this outside column itself is another column header (not a group header) in the table (report) and it derives its name partly from the 'GroupName'  values:

Example:

Value X for GroupName in page 1 will mean, in page 1, column Name of ABC column must be ABC-X Value Y for GroupName in page 2 will mean, in page 2, column Name of ABC column must be ABC-Y Value Z for GroupName in page 3 will mean, in page 3, column Name of
ABC column must be ABC-Z

ie the column name of ABC (Clm ABC)  must be dynamic as per the GroupName values (X,Y,Z....)

Page1:

GroupName                 Clm ABC-X

X

Page2:

GroupName                 Clm ABC-Y

Y

Page3:

GroupName                 Clm ABC-Z

Z

I have been able to use First(ReportItems!GroupName.Value) in the Page Header to get GroupNames displayed in each page; I get X in page 1, Y in page 2, Z in page 3.....

However, when I use ReportItems (that refers to a group name) in the Report Body outside the group,

I get the following error:

Report item expressions can only refer to other report items within the same grouping scope or a containing grouping scope

I need to get the X, Y, Z ... in each page for the column ABC.

I have been able to use this - First(Fields!GroupName.Value); however, I get ABC-X, ABC-X, ABC-X in each of the pages for the ABC column, instead of ABC-X in page 1, ABC-Y in page 2, ABC-Z in page 3, ...

Group By And Count Of Each Group

Oct 23, 2007

Hi,
I use group by myItem, that displays rows for each value of myItem.
I want at the end of each group for each specific myItem, I want an extra row to tell me the count of the rows for that group.

How do i do that please. Here s what I need, for example for this set of rows:

myItem colum2 colum3
711056 22662 Finances / -2291 -2479916
711056 22663 Finances / -2380 -2576255
711056 43428 Cda) -323 -349635
711056 43428 . -B-(Cda) -44 -47628
711057 44348 . -B-(Cda) -355 -384273
711057 47033 . -B-(Cda) -1278 -1383384

I need 2 extra rows, one at the end of the items 711056 telling me there are 4 rows for the item 711056 and one row at the very end telling me there are: 2 rows for the item: 711057

Thanks a lot.

Adding A Count Clause To A Query

Jun 5, 2008

I have the following query where I select records from Active_Activities_temp which do not match on cde_actv in the table ACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING:
SELECT Active_Activities_temp.*
FROM Active_Activities_temp LEFT JOIN
ACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING ON
Active_Activities_temp.cde_actv=ACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING.cde_actv
WHEREACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING.cde_actv is null
ORDER BY prtcpnt_id
So for example, if a participant has a cde_actv=38 (which doesn't exist in ACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING), that record would appear as the query is currently.

The issue is that participants can have multiple records in Active_Activities_temp and if a participant has a record that does exist in ACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING, no records for that participant should appear in this query result. For example, if a participant has two records in Active_Activities_temp, one with a cde_actv 38 (which does not appear in ACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING) and one with a cde_actv 33 (which does appear in ACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING), no records for that participant should appear in the result. Currently the record with cde_actv=38 does appear.

What code can I implement to do what I need to do? Thanks so much.

Cannot Use GROUP BY Clause The Way I Want To?

Jun 28, 2004

I'm trying to use a GROUP BY clause in my SQL statement when retieving information from an SQL Server DB. The only problem is that it won't let me 'SELECT' columns from the database that are not part of the GROUP BY clause. Here is my example:

This works:

SELECT ColumnA, ColumnB FROM MyTable GROUP BY ColumnA, ColumnB

This does NOT work:

SELECT ColumnA, ColumnB FROM MyTable GROUP BY ColumnA

It simply will not let me have ColumnB in the SELECT clause unless I put it in the GROUP BY clause. Is there any way around this? Because I need both columns to display in the page, but I only want to group them by one column.

I'm coming from MySQL, and in MySQL what I want to do is perfectly legal. However, in SQL Server it's not...

Any ideas?

Group By Clause

May 10, 2008

Hi all,

Got a problem here, I am not quite familiar yet with the sql group by clause. As an illustration, I have a table with column StoreName and Sales.

StoreName Sales
DFA_Main 50
DFA_Main 50
DFA_Branch 60
DFA_Branch 60
DFA_OtherBranch 10
MMDA_Main 50
MMDA_Main 50
MMDA_Branch 30
MMDA_Branch 30

In my understanding if we are going to group this table by StoreName the result will be:

StoreName Sales
DFA_Main 100
DFA_Branch 120
DFA_OtherBranch 10
MMDA_Main 100
MMDA_Branch 60

But what would be the sql statement to produce an output like this:

StoreName Sales
DFA 230
MMDA 160

Is it possible for me to do that? Thanks for the help in advance.

GROUP BY CLAUSE

Sep 24, 2007

Greetings!

Why does the select statement must have the same non aggregated columns which are also part of the group by clause?

I have a feeling it's to do with the way the SQL Server database engine actually executes the query? i.e. the select part is the last thing the engine performs (after doing the joins and the filtering etc...).

Your help would be appreciated.

Duplicates And The GROUP BY Clause

Nov 12, 2003

I am making a website where users go to a page that lists every Program in their area. The first time the page loads they see all the Programs, then then can filter it down with drop down lists. I have everything working except for the Category because some programs have more than one category. The select is working good but I get duplicates.

Here it is:

SELECT DISTINCT
p.ProgramID,
p.ProgramName,
p.ProgramCity,
p.ProgramState,
p.ProgramCountyID,
p.ProgramHours,
p.ProgramContactName,
p.ProgramPhone,
p.ProgramEmail,
p.ProgramGrades,
p.ProgramTransportation,
pc.ProgramID,
pc.CategoryID

FROM
Programs p,
ProgramCategories pc

WHERE
p.ProgramCountyID IS NOT NULL AND
p.ProgramCity IS NOT NULL AND
p.ProgramHours IS NOT NULL AND
p.ProgramGrades IS NOT NULL AND
p.ProgramTransportation IS NOT NULL AND
p.ProgramID = pc.ProgramID AND
pc.CategoryID IS NOT NULL

GROUP BY
p.ProgramID

ORDER BY
p.ProgramName ASC

When I have just p.ProgramID in the GROUP BY clause, I get the error:

"column name" is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause.

But when I put all the column names in the GROUP BY clause, I still get duplicates. What can I do to stop this. When the user selects a category the pc.CategoryID IS NOT NULL changes to pc.CategoryID = 3 (or whatever they select) and everything works the way its supposed to. I just want each individual program to show only once when the page first loads.

Thanks for your time
Dave

Group By Clause Limitation

Oct 14, 2006

Code is:
select
case when ItemCode is null then '-'
else ItemCode
End,
case when sum(RecdQty) is null then '-'
else sum(RecdQty)
End
from ItemMaster where ItemCode='V001' group by ItemCode

Problem Statement:
If query is not getting any records for above mentioned condition, then I want zero to be displayed if datatype is int (i.e. for sum(RecdQty) field) and '-' to be diplayed if datatype is varchar (i.e. for ItemCode field).
In this situation, "ItemCode is null" and "sum(RecdQty) is null" conditions are not been utilised.
Is this a limitation of case or group by clause?

Best Practices: GROUP BY Clause

May 20, 2004

I was wondering what the best way to write a GROUP BY clause when there are many (and time consuming) operations in the fields by grouped.

Fictious example:

SELECT DeptNo, AVG(Salary) FROM Department GROUP BY DeptNo;

This will give me the average salary per department. Let's say, however that
I had 10-15 fields being returned (along with the AVG(Salary)) and some fields even had operations being performed on them. Is it better to create a temporary table to calculate the sum per department (or a VIEW) and then
perform a JOIN with the rest of the data?

Fictious example:

SELECT DATENAME(y, StartDate), DATENAME(m, StartDate), DATEPART(d, StartDate), SUBSTR(DeptName, 1, 10), SomeFunction(SomeField), SomeFunction(SomeField), AVG(Salary)
GROUP BY DATENAME(y, StartDate), DATENAME(m, StartDate), DATEPART(d, StartDate), SUBSTR(DeptName, 1, 10), SomeFunction(SomeField), SomeFunction(SomeField);

Am I better off writing my query this way or using a JOIN on some temporary table or view?

Thanks

Using UPDATE On A GROUP BY Clause

Sep 29, 2007

I'd like to update the attribute Active of the table COMPANY_BRANCH to the value 0 (or false, since it is a bin field) on the below recordset:

SELECT COMPANY_BRANCH.CompBranchID, MAX(PLACEMENT.ExpirationDate) AS Expr1

FROM COMPANY_BRANCH INNER JOIN

PLACEMENT ON COMPANY_BRANCH.CompBranchID = PLACEMENT.ProducerBranchID

GROUP BY COMPANY_BRANCH.CompBranchID

HAVING (MAX(PLACEMENT.ExpirationDate) < DATEADD(yyyy, - 1, GETDATE()))

yet, I am unable to understand the concept on how this can be done. If I put it into query designer and change the query type to update, the code that gets generated is not correct - can someone help me?

Help On Count And Group

May 23, 2008

Hi everybody I have this sql code

SELECT i.infid, i.infname, i.infcalled, p.pubinfid, p.pubpub, p.publang, p.pubcount, p.pubid, n.cdpldesc
FROM info AS i INNER JOIN
pubssubscribe AS p ON i.infid = p.pubinfid INNER JOIN
newpubs AS n ON p.pubid = n.pubid
WHERE (i.infcond IS NULL)AND (p.pubid BETWEEN 30 AND 33) AND (p.pubcount > 1) AND (NOT (p.publang = '.'))

there are many records where infid appears more than once because people could subscribe in different in different publicatons.
ex.

infid pubid
1 30
1 32
1 33
2 30

etc... I want to count the infid appearing once and group it with infid

thanks
