Can anybody please tell me of a way you can tell SQL Server the `suid` number you want for a SQL Login, when you add a new login.
It picks them up by default, but I am in a situation where I am restoring DB`s from one server to another, and the SQL Logins keep falling out of synch with each database suid.

When I tried to add a new login to the server and after assigning DB Roles,
I am getting the error message that the role has been already added to the user. I think this username has already been in the system earlier. It is in the sysuser table. I tried to delete the roles to which this user has permissions. But still I am getting this error. I am not sure where else it is stored. How can I delete this username completely from all Databases and reassign this userid in the server.
Please advise.
I have a SAP Server running SQL2000 on Windows 2003.Recently I migrated the server from a NT4 Domain to a AD Domain usingADMT (with SID Migration for users) and everything seems ok.Now, after one month, I have to shut down the old NT4 domain and beforedoing it I have to replace the old logins in SQL with the correspondentusers in the new domain.I applied a script which returned Error 15401: Windows NT user or groupNEWDOMUser not found. Check the name again.I checked the KB article 324321http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;324321I applied the suggestion to verify ifSELECT name FROM sysxlogins WHERE sid = SUSER_SID 'NEWDOMUser')returns a row, but this is not happening.Then I tried to create the new login from the Enterprise Manager. So Ibrowse for the user and I'm able to find it (It exists! It's the sameuser I use to login on the server) but when I apply the changes I getthe same 15401 Error.So it seems that the KB article is not useful because:1) There is no duplicate security identifier2) It's not an authentication failure because I can login and browsethe AD. Also if I choose another AD user it works!3) I don't think it's a case sensitivity problem because it happensalso from EM. By the way, I verified the SAMAccountName AD property ofthe user and the name is all UpperCase.I checked lots of posts dealing with this matter but they don't seem toapply.Any help would be greatly appreciatedThanksDave

I have to give three users read access to a database. My manager told me to map them to a User called "zxDatabase.Read.ug". I scripted the User and got this...

I don't see a Login at the server level named zxDatabase.Read.ug, so this is confusing. Where is this login in SSMS?
How do I map my three users to user zxDatabase.Read.ug. Or am I not understanding correctly? Do I just add there windows login to the database as Users and configure them the same as zxDatabase.Read.ug
I am having some issues adding user logins to SQL Server. When Isearch for users in Active Directory from Security->Logins->New Login,I can search for and add users using the short name (samaccount, exdomainabcde). However, when I search for users using their CA name(ex. domaninfirstname.lastname), the user is not found.Is there some setting that needs to be activated in SQL Server to seethe CA name as well as the samaccount name, or is this an issue thatmust be resolved on the domain controller.I would appreciate any insight.Thanks,Matt

Hi all,
Have just tried my sql server 2005 connected asp classic website on II7 for the first time and have gotten some errors.
First off I have unchecked show friendly errors in IE and have enabled ASP to send error messages to the browser.
My error I get is when I execute a basic .asp page:

I have gone into ODBC and have setup both a user dsn and file dsn that equals mysqldsn and points to my database (I know you only need to set up one DSN but I'm not sure which)

Oracle and Teradata are able to capture the windows/client login that connects to their database with a functionnal ID.I've searched around and I don't think MS SQL can do this...I administer SQL 2014 server and also SAS Enterprise guide product. I've created sql server logins for several teams so everyone shares the same sql server login which is used to bind the SAS library to my SQL server database.
However, when looking at activity monitor, I can't drill down to which user is executing a particular query. I only see the SQL login which is share amongs 200 other folks.On the other hand, when they connect from SAS to Oracle or Teradata, I can see the shared login + additionally their windows NT login used to connect to SAS which is awesome....they can't fool me by using a shared/funcionnal ID....i still see who's using that ID...

What it does, it queries the a table using a connectionstring assigned to it in the Connection Managers Editor (which is an ado.net adapter). this works fine when i'm using a windows login in the ado.net connection manager. All the logins with sysadmin role are locked out in one of the SQL server. Also in that instance Logon trigger is implemented which allows only certain users with Windows Authentication to logon.
This server is converted into single user mode by using command prompt. Now we are attempting to connect to SQLServer using command sqlcmd -S FTCPU3239 (since we do not have any other login) and create a new login with sysadmin role but are refused due to logon trigger. it says Login failed for login 'DomainNameUserName' due to trigger execution.
I have a server that has 20 databases . I have tested with few users with different level of access and all of them were able to connect to the server and also see, select, update , delete from a particular database which is kind of weird because they do not have a user login associated or mapped to that database. I checked and no user is part of any group in AD that would give them permission to connect . I need a query that would find the permission path of a user. I already queried with xp_logininfo but I am not getting any thing.

Hi,
I am using SQL Server 2005 at home.
My problem is I forgot my password to log in to my server.
I only remember user name is 'sa'.
I haven't used it for two to three months. So I forgot password.
Previously, When I used sql server 2000, my login is as windows login. so no problem.
But this time, I set seperate log in and I got this problem.
Any help will be appreciated.

Since last so many days i am seeing that someone is trying to login to sql server through login name sa.but that login is failed.and this is occuring constantly.
Earlier i had same login failed message for another ip address.i have blocked that ip address through access-list in firewall.but now i am seeing the same message for another ip address.
(1).how can i permenently remove this message from Event log.
(2).What is the impact of this on sql server performance.is sql server performance degraded by this kind of contineous attack?

Been looking through the forums for a solution to this problem.I already tried granting access through statements such as:exec sp_grantloginaccess N1'machineNameASPNET'But they don't seem to work.. i vaguely remember seeing somewhere a DOS command line statement that grants access to the ASPNET_WP and that fixed my problem before on another computer.. but this is a new computer and i forgot to write down the command.Can anyone help explain and propose a solution to my problem. I am getting the error:
Cannot open database "aspnetdb" requested by the login. The login failed.
When I browse to my ASP.NET 3.5 LINQ web application on the IIS 6.0 server on Server 2003.
I imagine this is because while I granted SQL Server 2005 login and permissions to my database that the application stores its data in, I did NOT grant any rights to the service account the IIS Application Pool uses for its identity to the aspnetdb database on SQL Server which is where all my roles information is stored at.
My question is what are the MINIMUM permissions needed for this database so it can perform its roles related functions?
I'm using Windows Authentications with the SQL Role provider for authorization.

EDIT: I think I only need to open the aspnetdb database and add my login to the aspnet_Roles_FullAccess role. Is that correct?

In MSDN, it says that it is recommended to use windows authentication to connect to SQL Server rather than use mixed authentication.

Is there any way or option to get the all columns of dataset added to table when we add a table in data region. It will take lot of time to add one by one and also there are chances to add one column ore than once.

so i have a new box and I'm trying to get my websites and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition working on it, but the pages give me the following error when I try to load them:
"Cannot Open Database "XXXX" requested by login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'xxx'"
Everything seems exactly the same settings and user-wise from my old box to my new one, but nevertheless everything I've tried gives me the same error.
I've tried creating new users in SQL Server and giving them appropriate permissions to my database. I've even tried just using the built in 'sa' account. Nothing seems to change the error, except when I give it the incorrect password then it just says 'login failed'
This leads me to believe that i'm successfully logging into the SQL Server, but it doesn't want to give me access to the database I'm requesting access too. But "apparently" the account i'm using should have access to the database. If nothing else the 'sa' account should, but that didn't work either.
I'm stumped. Any ideas?

i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database.
When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and
push 'Test connection' button.
everything goes well.
then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things,
from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:
"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"
even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore....
it only work when i restart the computer.
why ?
Hi, I'm able to connect to my db using ASP.NET, but now I need to connect with ASP. I need to add a user like <computer name>ASP( I already have <computer name>ASPNET) using windows authentication to the db. I cannot seem find the way to do this in SQL Server management Studio, because it tells me that it doesn't find that group. Where can I add this user?Thanks a lot.

I have a database hosted by a webspace provider, I've got the IP address, login name and password, however when I try to do the New SQL Server Registration, it keeps coming up with the error "Remote Server doesn't exist or access denied", I can be sure the remote server is up and running and that I have access to it.
Any ideas? I've been struggling for nearly a week
This is how I do it:
1. Open the Client Network Utility.
2. Select the Alias tab.
3. Click on the Add? button.
4. Ensure that the TCP/IP option is selected in the Network libraries
5. In the Server alias field enter the fully qualified domain name, or the IP address, of the SQL Server to which you are connecting.
The Connection parameters are filled in automatically.
6. Click on the OK button to save the settings and exit the Client Network Utility.
7. Open the Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Manager.
8. In the Tree view on the left-hand side of the application window, expand the Microsoft SQL Server node.
9. Right click on the SQL Server Group entry, and select New SQL Server Registration from the menu that appears.
10. Click on the Next button to display the Register SQL Server Wizard
11. Select the alias that you have just created, and click on the Add button, followed by Next.
12. Select Use SQL Server Authentication
13. Click on the Next button.
14. Enter your SQL Server username and password, and click Next twice, followed by Finish.

I've been working on a local copy of the db and I've had to add a few new stored procedures and tables along with some fts catalogs. When we set up the copy on the production server, I figured I'd set up the new version that I've been working on so it has the latest structures in place. However, we then have to pull all the data over from the existing database to the new one. Obviously the new tables won't get any data input from the pull, but aside from creating a dtsx project to pull it all over, is there any other way to do it a little easier and faster? Thanks.

There is a requirement to transfer a table data from a oracle view to a SQL Server table. These both reside on the same box. I am trying to add the oracle instance as a linked server, like this:
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = @SOURCE_SERVER_NAME, @srvproduct = '', @provider = @PROVIDER_NAME, @datasrc = @DATA_SOURCE_NAME
The server gets added. But When I use this string as part of a stored procedure (or even not use it there), which does the work of transfering the data as required, I get this error:
Server: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Procedure UBS_PULL_HR_DATA, Line 125
OLE DB provider 'MSDASQL' reported an error.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified]
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'MSDASQL' IDBInitialize::Initialize returned 0x80004005: ].
I have added this Name in the System DSM also. I dont know how to go about it. Can any one please help?
