Edited Data Won't Propagate Back To The Database (VB 2005 Express && SQL Server 2005 Express)

Dec 11, 2006

Hi,

I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.

When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the

Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)

I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.

I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.

Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.

Thanks,
Ieyasu

Upgraded Express To Developer Edition Is Not As Easy As Advertised; Error When Adding A Database To Website

Dec 22, 2006

In trying to upgrade my sql express install from express to developer edition, I ended up having to delete all things express from my computer and do a clean install of developer edition (as i installed developer edition initially over sql express but this didnt seem to work;  express edition still appeared in add remove programs etc).  Anyway so i blew away the install and have a clean install of developer edition.  Now when I create a new website in Visual Studio 2005 and try to add a database to the project, it gives me an error stating that i need to have sql server express 2005 installed to function properly...  Do i need to have express AND developer edition of sql installed to do this?  I would think developer edition of sql would enable me this functionality...http://img277.imageshack.us/img277/4228/sqlerrorie2.jpgThanks!It is also worth noting that I get the dreaded remote connection error when trying to connect to a db that I used to be able to connect to when I was using sql express (the aspnetdb database that is created when you user their membership stuff)"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) "However, I did the following successfully:1. create a database using the sql management studio2. added a table and some data to it3. threw a dataset into the website4. added a gridview to a page in the website, pulling data from the dataset5. and the website runs successfully populating the page with data...fyi: My sql services: http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/2020/sqlserviceshj6.jpg

Adding Data To Database Or Viewing Database In MsSQL

Jun 14, 1999

I am new to ms SQL. I only have the use of the Enterprise Manager.
Creating tables I understand. However I am confused on how to add data to
a table or view the data in a table. Can this be done through Enterprise Manager? If I am adding a large amount of data do I have to use the query window. This seems like a tedious method. In Access yo have a form basically pop up where you can type in the record sets. Any advice would be appreciated! Sincerely,

Adding Procedure To SQL Server Express

May 18, 2006

I am adding (trying to add) a procedure (written by a friend of mine and someone who is experienced). I am adding it via the SQL Server Mgt. Studio Express. When I run it, it says that the command completed successfully, but it doesn't appear in the Procedure folder.

When I run my ASP 2.0 form that calls it, it says that it can't find the procedure.

Can anyone help me determine what to look for or what I might be doing wrong?

Thank you.

Adding Data From A Form To A Database

Nov 15, 2007

Very basic question here but I need to add a form to a page so it adds content, its as simple as that.  I've done this kind of using a <asp.Formview> tag and it works, but becuase I think I've used a form view I have to click add to insert data first.  Should I be using the <asp:formview> tag or is it a problem with the templates?

Configure Data Source Insertion Into SQL Server 2005 Database - Express Editions

Sep 12, 2006

I am attempting to insert information from Visual Web Developer 2005 using either the Gridview or Datalist controls into a SQL Server 2005 database and get stuck when defining the custom statement. When I enter the text within the insert tab, the <next> button remains greyed out, preventing me from continuing to the next page.If I copy the same text into the select tab, then I can continue with the wizard, however this raises other problems which may or may not be related (multiple insertions of the data into the SQL Server database table - possibly due to postback functions). I would rather use insert to confirm that my second problem is not because I am using the wrong option. My question is:Should I be able to use the insert function within VWD express or is this only available within the standard/pro editions?

I don't want to have to write an app just to get test data in. Seems like this should be a common need. Am I missing something obvious here? Can't find any reference to this in a search of the forums.

Adding An SQL Server Database To A Websolution

Jan 9, 2007

Dear Forum

I really hope someone can help me with the following - it's eating me up.

I'm creating a website in VS2005 and want to add an SQL Server database to the Solution, og I've created a subfolder to the App_Data folder called Database. Now when I click Add New Item and choose SQL database in the Add New Item dialog box I get the following error message

Connections to SQL Server files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express to function properly. Please verify installation of the component or download from the URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId49251

Now at some point in the past I installed Visual Basic, Visual Web developer and SQL Server express edition, but when I got hold of VS2005 Professional Edition I carefully made sure that all Express version of any VS software was uninstalled beforehand. So now I have only VS2005 Professional Edition and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition (32 bit) installed on my computer.

I have checked all the environment settings, and can't find a single thing that should point to SQL Server Express Edition.

I would really appriciate if you could give me a helping hand before I loose my sanity.

Thanks a hole bunch.

SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???

Apr 16, 2007

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?

The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Deploying Multi-user Sql Express Database To SQL Express Server

Jul 10, 2007

Okay, I've read massive topics on ClickOnce, and embedded database applications, etc, etc.

I need a handful of good suggestions how I can create a deployment package, to get my sql express database onto a SQL Express server.

The database will need to be multi-user, because I am also developing a WinForms application to connect to the SQL Express database.

I'm thinking I need to use some automated scripting features, to generate scripts for the database once I am done (unless you have a better suggestion).

After that, I need to know what to do with those scripts, and how can I create a setup / deployment packages to run those scripts against a SQL Express server.

The other alterntative obviously is to copy my sql express database, and run an attach command. This will work the first time, only because this will have been the first deployment of this database.

Please keep in mind when answering this question, that I will not be embedding the database, and as far as I understand ClickOnce is a feature for use with embedded databases or user instance databases (not sure).

I find it a bit scary thatit may be that easy to corrupt the database by just creating a dataconnection.

Importing Access Table Into SQL Server 2005 Express Table And Adding One Field

Feb 16, 2007

Hi all,

Hopefully I am posting this question in the correct forum. I am still learning about SQL 2005. Here is my issue. I have an access db that I archive weekly into and SQL server table. I have used the dst wizard to create an import job and initally that worked fine. field I have as the primary key in the access db cannot be the primary key in the sql table since I archive weekly and that primary key field will be imported several time over. I overcame this initally by not having a primary key in the sql table. This table is strictly for reference. However, now I need to setup a unique field for each of the records in the sql table. What I have done so far is create a recordID field in the sql table that is an int and set as yes to Identify (auotnumber). That worked great and created unique id for all existing records. The problem now is on the import. When I try to import the access table i am getting an error because of the extra field in the sql table, and the error is saying cannot import null value into this field. So... my final question is how can I import the access table into the sql table with one extra field which is the autonumber unique field? Thanks a bunch for any asistance.

Problem Inserting Data Into A SQL Express Database

Feb 21, 2007

I am trying to implement a code behind page (in VB) to insert data into a sql express database but something is not right.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  The following is the code I have:Protected Sub SaveButton_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles SaveButton.Click        Dim connString As String = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|News.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;Asynchronous Processing=true"        Dim sqlInsert As String = "INSERT INTO news_Article (Heading, Story, Author, Show_on_homepage) VALUES(@heading, @story, @author, @show)"        Dim conn As New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(connString)        Dim cmd As New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand(sqlInsert, conn)        Dim heading = HeadingTextBox.Text        Dim story = StoryEditor.Value        Dim author = AuthorTextBox.Text        Dim show = ShowHPCheckBox.Checked        conn.Open()        cmd.BeginExecuteNonQuery()        conn.Close()End Sub
