AdHoc Reporting Against SQL 2K W/meta Data?
Feb 6, 2004Okay... We have a SQL2K database that has about 500 tables or so. It is normalized to a reasonable level and enforces all relationships with PK/FKs, not triggers. Hence, for a database-minded person it is fairly easy to read (as easy as a 500+ table database can be!).
Our users need adhoc query capabilities. Our report writer is simply overwhelmed. He doesn't need to be spending time writing a report that is intended to be run once.
I expect the best alternative would be to use some sort of adhoc reporting tool that is based off meta data. We (the DBAs) could be responsible for maintaining the meta data and STILL have a manhour savings over developing all these reports.
Here's the catch... We are on a TIGHT budget (aerospace industry is still reeling a bit). Is anyone using a product or aware of a product that might be just the ticket for us? We have been investigating a product by LogiXML called LGX AdHoc (http://www.logixml.com/products/AdHoc/adhoc.htm). Looks promising. Anyone use or familar with it?

We are planning to user SQL server 2005 reporting services in our project, for this we are doing a Proof of concept exercise to evaluate if SSRS 2005 will be good for our project.
For this we are trying if we can make dashboard or composite reports (combine 4-5 reports to create one report).
Also if we can make this dashboard ad-hoc. As we are already using the Ad-Hoc reporting capability of SSRS 2005 we wanted to check if dashboards can also be created using Ad-hoc reporting feature.
Please let me know if you any information or pointers for this.

May 27, 2015I am looking for a solution for my customers who use the 2005 report models to create detail list reports. Â All I am able to find on 2012 are pivot type reports, SSAS tabular and cubes. Â It seems that MS assumes that all clients need statistical or summary reports. Â My users need to be able to create adhoc lists of data from multiple view and tables using drag and drop. Any third party distributable tool which could be used for adhoc reporting?

We got third party software, we are using adhoc queries more for the Applications (i am checking the DB Dashboard, it is showing as 97% CPU for adhoc queries). Could any one suggest how to tune SQL Server (at server level) for adhoc queries, we can not change the code now.
Let me know how to improve the SQL Server, whenever 3rd party applications use adhoc queries more?

ADHOC Updates Not Allowed - HELP

Working on partitioning a few large tables. One of the tables included a text column and the €œTEXTIMAGE_ON [PRIMARY]€? clause which would prevent the partitioning of this table. After some research we found that the data was legacy and no longer used. We updated the column on the affected rows to NULLS and altered the column to a VARCHAR(20)
I then attempted to run the ALTER TABLE SWITCH and I encountered the error
Msg 4947, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
ALTER TABLE SWITCH statement failed. There is no identical index in source table 'LocalDeltanet.dbo.testresultsjoe' for the index 'PKIDX_testSummary' in target table 'LocalDeltanet.dbo.testresults_part'.
After a lot of grief and testing I determined that the message was bogus and the real issue is that the 'sys.tables' still has €œlob_data_space_id€? with a value of 1 for this table.
I created a copy of the table with the text column and the "TEXTIMAGE_ON", then altered the column to a varchar and another table with just the varchar column and no "TEXTIMAGE_ON" spoecified. After copying the data from the original table, I tried to run the Alter Switch. It failed once again for the table with the text column that was altered to varchar, but it worked for the table that had the column specified as varchar from the start.
All other things have been checked and the two source tables in this test are identical execpt for the Text column specification. The alter column changes the definition of the column, but how would you remove the €œlob_data_space_id€? setting, since it appears that this value is causing my issues, is there anyway to update the table in place. I know I can BCP the data out, but that would take too long and would defeat the advantage of using the alter switch method.
BOL States:
The allow updates option is still present in the sp_configure stored procedure, although its functionality is unavailable in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (the setting has no effect). In SQL Server 2005, direct updates to the system tables are not supported. This means we cannot update the table manually.
Adhoc Query Tool For Sql Server ???

I don't think dynamic query in C# code or something like that is going to help me. Am I right? Do we have to use any type of query tool or something for doing this?

ADHOC Reports Using OLAP Cubes

i want to know whether it is possible to develop ADHOC reports using SSRS 2005 and OLAP Cubes. the requirement is the user should be able to select the columns he wants to see in the report.
I think this requires Dynamic RDL generation. It is very urgent. i have to give POC to the client on this. Any help in this regad is appreciated.

AdHoc Query Faster Than Stored Proc?
Aug 28, 2004Yesterday i face a strange SQL Server 2000 behaviour :-(
I had a query that was wrapped inside a stored procedure, as usual.
Suddenly, the stored procedure execution time raised from 9 secs to 80.
So to understand where the problem was i cut and pasted the sp body's into a new query analyzer window an then executed it again. Speed back to 9 secs.
Tried stored procedure again, and speed again set to 80 secs.
Tried to recompile sp. Nothing. Tried to restart SQL Server. Nothing. Tried to DROP & RE-CREATE sp. Done! Speed again at 9 secs.
My collegue asked me "why?", but i had no words. :confused: Do you have any explanation?

Hello, When I am seeing SQL Server 2005 Management studio Server Dashboard> I am seeing my(USERS) databases and msdb database usage is very small % of in CPU Usage(%), Logical IO Performed (%) Usage pie chart.
90% of Total cpu usage is showing for Adhoc Queries. what excatly this means in Dashboard? if application uses more than it would have shown in Database level or not?
sicerely this dashboard is good, if any one is watching daily, please advice their experiences here.

To Access Reporting Sevices (Report Manager, Reporting Web Services), Does One Has To Be An Admin On The Machine

Our DBA has installed reporting services on a server and now in order to access the report manager, one has to be an Admin on that Server. I am guessing that there is a mistake in the configuration of Reporting Services. Usually it should allow anybody who was added to the roles in the properties section of the Report Manager, right? I have also added the users to the DB..
Also I am using Windows Authentication to access Report Catalog items (Reporting Services is installed on Server2) from a web Application(deployed on Server1) and displaying the report using report viewer. For some reason, server1 has to be in an Admin role on Server2 to access the report catalog/report. This is kinda strange for me as I don't want everybody to be an Admin on Server2. Can anybody please point in the right direction?

I've few options down...
1. Directly point to OLTP database as source and write stored procedure to show result set.
2. Replicate the database and write the SP's to reports. To avoid pointing directly to OLTP db.
3. To build the datawarehouse with dim & facts to show it in reports. I prefer this as a standard method, but this would have some latency depending on trasaction load which will differ from the requirement.

I see that the system tables do provide some of this information, is there a 3rd party tool or something we can use to gather all this type of information for us?

Configure IIS For Reporting Manager And Reporting Server Site

My reporting manager and reporting server were working fine in IIS. But when I booted the system one day, one error message came "Unexpected error" for the IIS. So I removed the IIS and reinstalled he same.
But after that, I tried to give virtual directories to reporting manager and reporting server sites. But it ain't working. Could you please help me?

May 8, 2015I started my Reporting Server and if I use the Internet Explorer as a Administrator everything works fine.But if I don't open it as an admin it calls "rsAccess Denied The user [...] does not have the permission...".Problem is that I want to run it in an SAP Program with an HTML Viewer. how I can get those Permissions ?By the way somehow I'm not able to create or change roles in the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.

Is there a way to run a report in a batch mode where the web ui would not show and perhaps the result of the report could be automated to export to .pdf format?
Does anyone know if SQL Express 2008 with Advanced Services will support report subscriptions, or any sort of a batch reporting capability?

I am trying to migrate my reports from SQL server 2000 reporting services 32bit to 2005 64bit. I am following the migration steps that MS specified.

May 26, 2015We have SCCM 2012Â primary site and Remote SQL 2012 server. Due to hardening and password reset we are facing reporting issue.
while we Open the SRS report in SQL server and try to edit the Report (Report Builder) we are getting following error due to which we are unable to configure Reporting Service point in the SCCM 2012 server. We created the New Reporting server database still we are getting the below error.
Reporting Problems W/ MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Step By Step To MS
Apr 26, 2007I am trying to learn Reporting Services using the title "MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Step by Step" by Stacia Misner and Hitachi Consulting, published in 2006. I am experiencing problems with some of the exercises. I got as far as Chapter 4 when I followed directions to create a SQL statement to define a query string for a dataset. Pg 80:
select * from vProductProfitability
where year = 2003 and
MonthNumberOfYear = 1
The view vProductProfitability does not exist in the tutorial database that came with the book, rs2005sbsDW. The result of this query is the basis for the entire chapter on developing basic reports and I'm being denied a learning opportunity because the view does not exist. In short, I'm stuck.
I have tried to find somewhere at Microsoft to place this question and get some answers so I can continue thru the tutorial. To no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions?
BTW, the solution that came in the CD is also wrong because the query noted above is also in the solution.

Compatibility Of SQL Express Reporting Services With SQL 2000 Reporting Services
Dec 6, 2006I'm attempting to obtain a cost effective solution for my existing customers to develop reports on their SQL 2000 Server installations using their Reporting Services 2000. With products like Visual Basic.NET 2003 becoming almost impossible to obtain, I have at least one customer who is running into a dead end.
One option possibly is the SQL Express with Advanced Services download, which has Reporting Services. My questions are as follows:
Can the report designer component of SQL Express Reporting Services be configured to connect to an external database (which would happen to be a SQL 2000 database) to establish its datasets?
Does the resultant designed report end up in an RDL file? If the customer published this report via the Reporting Services 2000 Report Manager, would the report be able to run?
Sorry for asking a question like this that I could probably answer on my own, but my customer needed this answer yesterday. I have scoured the web and microsoft sites - and posted a question on the official SQL Reporting Services cateogy ... in an attempt to answer the basic question of how to design reports for Reporting Services 2000 in the absence of Visual Basic.NET 2003 (or other .NET 2003 tools) with no success.

I am wondering (hoping!) if I can run a query that will showits performance over the past 6 months in terms of how long theexecution for each run took.I think SQL server saves this dts package run history somewhere and ifso how can I do this? Currently: We use currently devexpress reports and we have 2 languages(Arabic and English). the data in tables saved in two ways (Arabic and English). when the end user change the language of the web site the report data language changed when run it.
