Adjusting The Priority Of The Replication Process (SQL 2000)

Oct 5, 2006

Hi,

I need information on adjusting the priority of the replication thread(s) within SQL Server 2000. All I've been able to find is how-to's on adjusting the priority of the SQL Server process itself, as well as information on how to adjust the relative priority of changes made to the database by subscribers.

Here's the situation, from time to time our replication system goes down, it starts itself up after waiting 5 minutes but this causes a problem. When its starting up it seems to be taking up far too many CPU cycles. As such the server is unable to process SQL queries, which forces its subscribers to time out. This is a bad thing as the subscribers are control systems on an assembly line. What I want to do is lower the priority of replication so that the server can still process queries while the replication agent is restarting itself. Is this possible? If so how can it be done?

Thanks,

Geoff Dupuis

Controlling Process Priority In SQL Server 2000 - Possible..?

Jun 25, 2007

A similar question has been asked in a different thread, but didn't get a conclusive answer. Is there a way to set process priority on a specific process (alternatively - processes started by a specific user), similar to what the Task Manager allows in Windows?

I need to archive some data from an OLTP database. Unfortunately, some of the tables are growing rather large, and copying the data, and especially removing it based on record age, is a resource-intensive operation. My database must be available 24/7, and I can't have queries timing out, or I start losing business real fast. I was thinking of firing off the archive script and setting the process priority on it to something lower than normal, so it won't interfere with my OLTP processes.

Maybe someone can suggest a better solution?

SQL Server 2000 Merge Replication Process

Jun 22, 2004

Hi,
I am trying to replicate a production database server,on sql server 2000 at a particular geographic location to a new failover database server on sql server 2000 in a different geographic location via internet. The intention here is to use the failover database during times when the production server is down or busy and the synchronization needs to be sceduled for every 10 min.
It will be of huge help if any expert could give the detailed process involved and any precautions that need to be taken. I also need to keep inmind to use the ever/odd sequence number generator during the replication implementation.
Also, Whether to use row-level or column-level tracking?

thanks

Adjusting Parameter Dropdown Width

Oct 25, 2007

Hi there,
May be a kind of dumb question, but I have a multi-value parameter that I would like to give users the ability to select from in a SSRS 2005 Report and I was wondering if there was a way to adjust the width of the drop down so the user wouldn't have to scroll horizontally to see a full parameter item. It looks like it cuts off after about 30 characters.

Any help here would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Adjusting Report Width Automatically

Dec 27, 2006

Hi All,

We are having a table report which has set of columns where the visibility is made false based on report parameters. It works fine and the table automatically shrinks. But, the page width remains as early and has lot of blank space in it. It also causes printer to print many blank pages.

Is there a way to control pagewidth dynamically? Thought of adding a custom assembly to control page width - but how to access the page that is getting displayed. "this" will refer to the the assembly class instead of report as such.

Any help is highly appreciated.

Adjusting Time Zone And Daylight Saving In SQL

Aug 6, 2007

Hi,
I have this simple SQL query which SELECTs the fields according to the criteria in WHERE clause.  SELECT callingPartyNumber, originalCalledPartyNumber, finalCalledPartyNumber,
dateadd(ss, (dateTimeConnect + (60 * 60 * -5))+3600 , '01-01-1970 00:00:00') AS dateTimeConnect,
dateadd(ss, (dateTimeDisconnect + (60 * 60 * -5))+3600, '01-01-1970 00:00:00') AS dateTimeDisconnect,
CONVERT(char(8), DATEADD(second, duration, '0:00:00'), 108) AS duration
FROM Calls
WHERE
(callingPartyNumber = ISNULL(@callingPartyNumber, callingPartyNumber)) AND
(originalCalledPartyNumber = ISNULL(@originalCalledPartyNumber, originalCalledPartyNumber)) AND
(finalCalledPartyNumber = ISNULL(@finalCalledPartyNumber, finalCalledPartyNumber)) AND
(duration >= @theDuration) AND
((datetimeConnect - 14400) >= ISNULL(convert(bigint,
datediff(ss, '01-01-1970 00:00:00', @dateTimeConnect)), datetimeConnect)) AND
((dateTimeDisconnect - 14400) <= ISNULL(convert(bigint,
datediff(ss, '01-01-1970 00:00:00', @dateTimeDisconnect)), dateTimeDisconnect))
If you notice, in the SELECT, I add 3600 (1 hour) to adjust the time according to the current DayLight saving setting. Similarly, while comparing in WHERE clause, I subtract 14400 seconds (4 hours) to adjust the comparison according to EST (-5 GMT, but doing -4 GMT since daylight saving) and daylight saving.
Also, dateTimeConnect and dataTimeDisconnect fields save time in UTC seconds.
Now this application may be used by clients in different timezones. The application may be hosted on their server which would mean a different time zone. What would be the best way to make this time zone and daylight adjustment more dynamic instead of hardcoding the values.

Adjusting Data Files Space Allocated On The Fly

May 2, 2005

Current size is listed at 963mb while allocated size is 959mb. Trans log size is set to auto-grow and is allocated 4mb

Can we change that number on the fly, and also change the the growth settings without affecting the system?

Being a live system we obviously do not want any downtime, but believe this will help with our slowdown.

Any other ideas would also be appreciated

Remove Columns Created By Replication Process

One of our users tried to set replication solution in a sqlserver (the idea was given up).
SQL Server added in each table a column related to replication.
We want to remove theses columns and I used the following script :

select 'ALTER TABLE dbo.'+object_name(id)+' DROP CONSTRAINT '+object_name(constid)+' GO'
+'ALTER TABLE dbo.'+object_name(id)+' DROP COLUMN '+'msrepl_tran_version GO'
from sysconstraints where object_name(constid) like '%msrep%'

Question:
1. I want to know how to introduce a carraige return in order to have some thing like this :

...
ALTER TABLE dbo.T_CommandCopyFile
DROP CONSTRAINT DF__T_Command__msrep__44AB0736
GO
ALTER TABLE dbo.T_CommandCopyFile

...
2. Is there any other solution to do this more simply ?

Is Is Necessary For A Table Which Will Be Part Of The Replication Process To Have A And Primary Key Defined On It?

May 17, 2007

Hi there,

We're going to use replication on our database. There are tables without any primary key.

Is a primary key necessary for replication?

I have also antoher question: We want to replicate the whole OLTP database (size 30 GB).

Is snapshot replication a suitable mechanisme for this? I thougt snapshot replication overwrites all of the data, not only changed data. Or should we use another replication method?

Thanks in advance,

Using SSIS Packages To Process SQL Server 2000 OLAP Objects

Nov 16, 2006

Can a SSIS server, i.e. staging server be used to create packages that update SQL Server 2000 Analysis services objects on another server running SQL server 2000 OLAP?

It appears that the OLAP connection manager ion SSIS supports only connections (and thus updates) to 2005 OLAP objects.  I work for a company that has a huge investment in a 3rd party DW that uses Analysis Services 2000.  the DW tool vendor will not support an upgrade to SSAS 2005.  We wish to extend the DW from other data sources.  My thought was to use a staging server with SSIS, used solely as the ETL tool for all new development (thus no more DTS development), and to update the sql server 2000 operational data store on another box.

I can find no documentation on how to process sql server 2000 analysis services objects from within an SSIS package.   Any ideas?

Priority Of Databases

Mar 8, 2004

Hi,

Is it possible to change/set the priority of databases? (Win2K, SQL 2K)

We have an evnironment which is somewhat lacking in resource, and would like to place the priority of one of the databases lower than the other so that the processing on the main database is carried out before the secondary one.

If there isn't any way to do this for the database level - is it possible for a specific user?

Hopefully I havnt been too vague here - but if there is any more info I should be passing on let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Set Priority On T-sql Statement

Feb 11, 2008

Hi

We are in the process of moving some data from one structure to another. The complete script takes very long time to complete in out production environment.

The script can maybe filtered even more, so it can run in small steps. The only problem here is that we would like it to be transactional.

But i came to wonder - are there any way to tell before starting a t-sql statement that it should run with low priority? This way it could run for 2 days, without having any severe impact on the production environment?

Best regards
/Anders

FCB::Open: Operating System Error 32(The Process Cannot Access The File Because It Is Being Used By Another Process.) Occurred W

Dec 3, 2007

Hello all,
I am running into an interesting scenario on my desktop. I'm running developer edition on Windows XP Professional (9.00.3042.00 SP2 Developer Edition). OS is autopatched via corporate policy and I saw some patches go in last week. This machine is also a hand-me-down so I don't have a clean install of the databases on the machine but I am local admin.

So, starting last week after a forced remote reboot (also a policy) I noticed a few of the databases didn't start back up. I chalked it up to the hard shutdown and went along my merry way. Friday however I know I shut my machine down nicely and this morning when I booted up, I was in the same state I was last Wenesday. 7 of the 18 databases on my machine came up with

FCB:pen: Operating system error 32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.) occurred while creating or opening file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataTest.mdf'. Diagnose and correct the operating system error, and retry the operation.
and it also logs
FCB:pen failed: Could not open file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataTest.mdf for file number 1. OS error: 32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.).

I've caught references to the auto close feature being a possible culprit, no dice as the databases in question are set to False. Recovery mode varies on the databases from Simple to Full. If I cycle the SQL Server service, whatever transient issue it was having with those files is gone.
As much as I'd love to disable the virus scanner, network security would not be amused. The data and log files appear to have the same permissions as unaffected database files. Nothing's set to read only or archive as I've caught on other forums as possible gremlins. I have sufficient disk space and the databases are set for unrestricted growth.

Any thoughts on what I could look at? If it was everything coming up in RECOVERY_PENDING it's make more sense to me than a hit or miss type of thing I'm experiencing now.
