I would like to ask a question, more like to verify something that I know myself.
I have an installation in SQL Server 7.0 (SP4), that hosts a database of 70gb with an average growth of 5 gb a month, that is being 'hitted' with an average of 600 clients, (about 50 to 90 concurrent hits). My question is :
Given the fact that I wish to upgrade my server to an SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition, how much RAM should I fit to the new machine?
I do have my suspicion, and I would like to keep it to myself for now, I would like also to ask if there's a formula for ram calculation. Mind you I don't ask for MINIMUM RAM, but more like OPTIMUM RAM, being that this Server hosts a critical system.
I have a DTS package in a QA server (MS SQL SERVER 2000). Now I want to implement that DTS package to the Production Server (MS SQL SERVER 2000) without any administrative effort.
I just wanted to create a script which can then execute to the production server to create that DTS package.
Till now what I have done to overcome this issues are..
I have save the DTS package in QA Server as Structured Storage File. And then copied the Structured Storage file from the QA Server to the production Server And then execute the package using dtsrun utilities. But in that case it is not creating the package in the production server.So that one can update or view the package from SQL Server Enterprise Manager ->Data transformation Service->Locale Package.

I have 2 identical servers... one for DEV and one for TEST. On the DEV server, I can use xp_cmsdhell to execute "administrative commands" such as NET SHARE and AT. On the identically configured TEST server, I can not. Those command return the "System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied" error. I CAN run other commands via xp_cmdshell (DIR, NET USE, etc.). This is true regardless of the account I connect as.
The SQL Server service accounts in both instances are domain accounts belonging to the local admin group.
I "know" that I ran across this when setting up the DEV server and am "fairly sure" I found a reference to a known problem with 2005's xp_cmdshell and administrative commands. But for the life of me I can not now find any such reference, nor can I find any differences between the DEV and TEST servers in the area of users, groups, policies, or anything else security-related. (99.9% of the internet searches I do end up being about either enabling xp_cmdshell -- done -- or setting up an xp_cmdshell proxy account -- not needed).
The current way I have my asp.net 2.0 web app running reports is, based on an interface the user selects the criteria for a report. The .RDL file is created dynamically based on the user's selections. I then need to SOAP the dynamically created report to the report server and then the report runs fine. BUT it requires Adminstrative rights to do this. Can this be accomplished without giving the local machine admin rights. I am sorry if this question has been answered before but i have not been up here in a while.
Hi, I'm the DBA of a 500 person state agency. I have 16 accounts with SysAdmin rights. That seems way too many. But the other server rights seem to be too restrictive. Even dbOwner seems restrictive. What sort of consensus is there for the rights other application developers and SAs ought to have?
I am not able to connect to Remote Distributor from Publisher using Administrative Link Password. I have configured the Distributor on 1 m/c and Publisher on another m/c. When i use the wizard to configure the publisher using remote distributor. I have also specified the same Admin Password link (distributor_admin) in the distributor m/c.
I am getting the following message:

Hi All, I would like to know, how the datetime will be stored in the sqlserver datetime column. Because some time i am giving the date in dd/mm/yyyy and sometime mm/dd/yyyy. while give the date in mm/dd/yyyy works fine but not in the another case. and also while i execute a query on query analyser it shows the datetime in yyyy/mm/dd format. I am currently running SQL Server 2000 Standard on my production system, and I am looking to upgrade the system to Windows 2000 Adv. Server. I would also like to upgrade SQL Server 2000 Standard to SQL Server 2000 Enterprise to utilize more than 2GB of memory. We are experiencing a problem with Sql Server 2000 linking to anAccess 97 file. Trying to setup an ODBC system DSN on our Vista Business local desktop we get the following errors -

Hi, I am trying to edit some data from a SQL2000-datasource in ASP.NET 2.0 and have a problem with a column that has bit-data and is used for selection. SQL2005 works fine when declaring <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter DefaultValue="TRUE" Name="APL" Type="boolean" /> </SelectParameters>When running this code with SQL2000, there are no error-msgs, but after editing a record the "APL"-column looses its value of 1 and is set to 0. Looks like an issue with type-conversion, we've hit incompatibilities between SQL200 and 2005 with bit/boolean several times before. So, how is this done correctly with SQL2000? (I've tried setting the Type to "int16" -> err. Also setting Defval="1" gave an err) ThanksMichael
I've created a small company database where the tables reside in a SQLServer database. I'm using Access 2000 forms for a front end.I've got a System DSN set-up to SQL Server and am using links withinAccess 2000 to get to the SQL Server tables.My forms worked fine until I made a few minor changes to the databaseschema on SQL Server (e.g. added a foreign key, or added a column).After that, all the links break - I click on a table link and get anerror msg like "invalid object name."Deleting the links after a schema change and re-adding the links seemedto fix the problem. The forms I'd already created seemed to work fineafter re-creating the links.But then I got more advanced with my forms. I have it set up so thatfor certain entry fields, the combobox gets populated with values froma table (the description appears in the drop-down and the correspondingprimary key value gets populated in the table). I created a number offorms using this technique, entered data, and everything worked fine.Made a small schema change and it broke everything -- not the actualtable links, but the functionality for the drop-downs. My values nolonger appeared, and this was true for forms that accessed tables whoseschemas did not change.This is driving me nuts. Is there any way to keep my forms frombreaking each time I make a small schema change?Thanks.- Dana

I've just started getting this EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) on machines using Windows 2000 sp4 connecting to SQLServer. This is crashing JVMs (multiple Sun versions and BEA also) in the Java VM frame (outside our code). This has just started recently - perhaps with the last set of patches? Has anyone else seen this or know what I could do to get more information? Could this be related to updates to named pipes?
Hi, I worked on a project in ASP.NET using SQL server 2000 as the back end. Its a conversion application that I rewrote in ASP.NET using C#. I need to import the old data in Access db into SQL server 2000 and I have very little knowledge about doing it. The data in not a direct one -one transformation. There are considerable changes to the Database design and data types. Any help and suggestions wud be really helpful. Also, any article links wud be great.
We have a SQL Server 7.0 system in NT 4.0 environment. We upgraded our users to Access 2000 and started to work with this. Now we installed a new server which is Windows 2000 based and the domain is different from the SQL servers domain. We then installed Access 2000 on Windows 2000 to use with terminal server. But I noticed that there was a problem with the program. I then looked at the program which was written on Access 2000 and saw that the tables and views can't be seen. The program runs but I can't see the views and tables. Another thing is access disconects from SQL Server when I want to see the tables. So what can be the problem.
In one part there is an Access 2000 on Windows 2000 server. On the other part SQL Server 7.0 on Windows NT 4.0. And Access can't see the tables in SQL server.

I am a freelance programmer and just picked up a client that has an instance of SQL Server. I just need to know if the Developer edition (I've seen it as low as $49) will function adequately for me to test the application I'm writing.
The test environment will be 2 PC's, 'A' running the server and 'B' the one I'm writing the software on. I need to configure comp 'A' to mirror the client's WAN and how various client's comps will access the database with the application I'm writing on comp 'B'. I don't need a full-blown liscense for the database, as I won't be keeping it after production is finished. I just need one I can connect to and configure for development testing without having to develope the software on-site.
