Advanced Select Based On Multiple Field Combinations
May 31, 2006
I have developed an ASP.NET form with 12 different fields that will allow end users the cability to query 3 tables that are relational to one another.
I was curious what is the best way to perform this in a Stored Procedure?
Can I use a UNION -- Not sure if this is the best choice
or account for evey kind of WHERE clause based off IF statements on the data that is passed through the parameters?

I have a table called BidItem which has another table calledBidAddendum related to it by foreign key. I have another table calledBidFolder which is related to both BidItem and BidAddendum, based on acolumn called RefId and one called Type, i.e. type 1 is a relationshipto BidItem and type 2 is a relationship to BidAddendum. Is there any way to specify a foreign key that will allow for thedifferent types indicating which table the relationship should existon? Or do I have to have two separate tables with identical columns(and remove the type column) ?? I would prefer not to have multipleidentical tables.

I have a report that uses different datasets based on the year selected by a user.
I have a year_id parameter that sets a report variable named dataset_chosen. I have varified that these are working correctly together.
I have attempted populating table cell data to display from the chosen dataset. As yet to no avail.
How could I display data from the dataset a user selects via the year_id options?

I have a table with two sets of fields, one for PRIMARY Mail Address and the other for ALTERNATE Mail Address. Both sets are five fields long. I will call them PRIMARY & ALTERNATE for this discussion. I want to select the PRIMARY fields if ALTERNATE is either null or zero, and the ALTERNATE fields if data is present.
I have used this syntax but it gives a table with both the PRIMARY & SECONDARY records.
SELECT TXPRCL, TXALTR, TXANAM
FROM dbo.PCWEBF21
WHERE (TXALTR > 0)
UNION
SELECT TXPRCL, TXTAXP, TXTNAM
FROM dbo.PCWEBF21
WHERE TXALTR = 0
Would a Select Case work? something like
Select PRIMARY when ALTERNATE = 0, and ALTERNATE when ALTERNATE > 0 or is not null.

I am trying to match records that are >= the current date. I have tried using:
SELECT DISTINCT name
FROM table
WHERE datefield >= DATEPART(month, GETDATE()) AND datefield >= DATEPART(day, GETDATE()) AND datefield >= DATEPART(year, GETDATE())
ORDER BY name
but this is not giving me the result that I am looking for. What is the best way to match a DateTime field type using the current date without the time?

Hi
I would like to get records from a table and present a result set based upon the search fields
the search fields could be any of the following: PNo, Year, JNo, C1No6, C2No3, C3No3, C4No3,
they could enter any combination of these however if they dont enter any of the above then the search should not retrieve any thing. the table colunms are listed below and asample data set is also shown below.
Currently the only way i think it can be done is by writing multiple queries with different queries to be executed based upon the search field that have been filled? can it be done in a stored prcedure? and can it be done using non-dynamic sql?
Name, PNo, Year, JNo, C1No6, C2No3, C3No3, C4No3, RefImage
adam, 01, 1999, 099, 3yh333, 888, 989, 999, ref1999099.jpg
Brian, 01, 2005, 029, 3yh323, 828, 929, 929, ref1929099.jpg

Hi! I'm new to SQL and have a question...
I'm writing a script that gathers a few variables from an outside source, then queries a table and looks for a record that has the exact values of those variables. If the record is not found, a new record is added. If the record is found, nothing happens.
Basically my SELECT statement looks something like this, then is followed by an If... Else statement
SELECT * FROM TableName
WHERE LastName = varLastName
AND FirstName = varFirstName
AND Address = varAddress
If RecordSet.EOF = True Then
'Item Not Found, add new record
'code to add new record......
Else
'Item Found, do nothing
End If
RecordSet.Update
RecordSet.Close
Even when I try to delete the If.. statement and simply display the records, it comes up as blank. Is the syntax correct for my SELECT statement??

Hi,
I have 1 table with 5 rows. One of the rows has dateTime values. I want to know how many rows there are with a value in that column < today AND how many rows there are with a value in that column > today.
I'm not sure how to do this.
SELECT Count(*) WHERE dateColumn <= today AND dateColumn > today gives me everything.
I like to end up with a column containing the count of rows <= today
and a column with rows where date > today.
Is this possible in SQL or do I have to retrieve all rows and then loop over the resultset and check each row?
Thanks,
Marc

I have a table in which each record has a initial date and a final date. I would like to create I query that gives me one row for each month between the initial date and the final date. It would be something like this:
Original:
Product|price|initial_date|final_date
A|20.50|2014-08-10|2014-10-01
B|50|2015-01-15|2015-02-20
Resulting view:
A|20.5|2014-08-01
A|20.5|2014-09-01
A|20.5|2014-10-01
B|50|2015-01-01
B|50|2015-02-01
I would like to do that, because these dates correspond to the time in which the products are in possession of sellers, so I would to use this resulting query to generate a pivot chart in Excel to illustrate the value of the goods that are with our sellers in each month.
Is it possible to do it? I think I could do that direct in VBA, but I think that maybe it would be faster if I could do it directly in SQL.
By the way, I am using MS SQL Server and SQL Server Manegement Studio 2012.

Hello all. I hope someone can offer me some help. I'm trying to construct a SQL statement that will be run on a Dataset that I have. The trick is that there are many conditions that can apply. I'll describe my situation:
I have about 1700 records in a datatable titled "AISC_Shapes_Table" with 49 columns. What I would like to do is allow the user of my VB application to 'create' a custom query (i.e. advanced search). For now, I'll just discuss two columns; The Section Label titled "AISC_MANUAL_LABEL" and the Weight column "W". The data appears in the following manner:
(AISC_Shapes_Table)
AISC_MANUAL_LABEL W
W44x300 300
W42x200 200
(and so on)
WT22x150 150
WT21x100 100
(and so on)
MT12.5x12.4 12.4
MT12x10 10
(etc.)
I have a listbox which users can select MULTIPLE "Manual Labels" or shapes. They then select a property (W for weight, in this case) and a limitation (greater than a value, less than a value, or between two values). From all this, I create a custom Query string or filter to apply to my BindingSource.Filter method. However I have to use the % wildcard to deal with exceptions. If the user only wants W shapes, I use "...LIKE 'W%'" and "...NOT LIKE 'WT%" to be sure to select ONLY W shapes and no WT's. The problems arises, however, when the user wants multiple shapes in general. If I want to select all the "AISC_MANUAL_LABEL" values with W <= 40, I can't do it. An example of a statement I tried to use to select WT% Labels and MT% labels with weight (W)<=100 is:
Code SnippetSELECT AISC_MANUAL_LABEL, W
FROM AISC_Shape_Table
WHERE (W <= 100) AND ((AISC_MANUAL_LABEL LIKE 'MT%') AND (AISC_MANUAL_LABEL LIKE 'WT%'))
It returns a NULL value to me, which i know is NOT because no such values exist. So, I further investigated and tried to use a subquery seeing if IN, ANY, or ALL would work, but to no avail. Can anyone offer up any suggestions? I know that if I can get an example of ONE of them to work, then I'll easily be able to apply it to all of my cases. Otherwise, am I just going about this the hard way or is it even possible? Please, ANY suggestions will help. Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Steve G.

I know there is some kind of rule against the following SQL statement, but I was wondering what to do to get around this problem (some kind of grouping). Sorry for the stupid question.
SELECT * FROM Table1, Table2 WHERE Table1.ID IS NOT NULL AND Table2.ID IS NOT NULL
Basically I want to select all records from the two tables (they have the same fields, but are just different specialties) and then output them, but there is nothing in common between the two to reference one another, and it ends up in some kind of loop. Thanks. for the help.

I'm new to MS SQL and VB. I have a table with one field JOB_NAME containing 20 records. Out of that field I want to retrieve 6 of the 20 records into a pulldown menu. They are all unique text names like so:
Anna Smith
John Doe
etc. I did not see IDs listed for any of the names in the table when I looked.
There is no common denominator to the names that can be filtered in the SELECT statement, and the 6 that I want will need to be pulled out individually.
Is there a way to do this with a SELECT statement? I have not found much information about how to extract unique records out of a single field. Here's the statement I'm using which pulls all of them:
strSQL = "SELECT DISTINCT JOB_NAME AS Names FROM [WORKER_NAMES] WHERE JOB_NAME<>' ' ORDER BY JOB_NAME ASC"
This gives me the total list but I only want to bring back 6 of the 20 for the pulldown.
Is there a way to modify this statement to pull only the records that I want?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Data Scenario – Sitemaster entity has two attributes (Region and Country).
Region and Country are both domain-based attributes on separate entities [Region and . The Country entity has a domain based attribute on REGION.
Data relationship looks like this… REGION > COUNTRY
Customer Requirement
Customer would like the MDS UI to filter the Country drop-down options based on the Region selection.
To my knowledge – the only filtering that can be done is based on user security using Hierarchy Membership Permissions.

I know there has to be a way to do this, but I've gone brain dead. Thescenario..a varchar field in a table contains a date range (i.e. June 1,2004 - June 15, 2004 or September 1, 2004 - September 30, 2004 or...). Theusers have decided thats a bad way to do this (!) so they want to split thatfield into two new fields. Everything before the space/dash ( -) goes intoa 'FromDate' field, everything after the dash/space goes into the 'ToDate'field. I've played around with STRING commands, but haven't stumbled on ityet. Any help at all would be appreciated! DTS?

So now I have a source lat, long(user) and destination lat, long(rows in dbase). I am trying to create a report using Reporting Services.
My problem right now is that the way the table is constructed, I am trying to pull 3 seperate values i.e. One is the number of Hours, One is the type of work, and the 3rd is the Grade, out of one column and place them in 3 seperate columns in the report.
I can currently get one value but how to get the information I need to be able to use in my reports.
So far what I've been working with SQL Reporting Services 2005 I love it and have made several reports, but this one has got me stumped.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
I might not have made my problem quite clear enough. My table has one column labeled value. The value in that table is linked through an ID field to another table where the ID's are broken down to one ID =Number of Hours, One ID = Grade and One ID= type of work.
What I'm trying to do is when using these ID's and seperate the value related to those ID's into 3 seperate columns in a query for using in Reporting Services to create the report
As you can see, I'm attempting to change the name of the same column 3 times to reflect the correct information and then link them all to the person, where one person might have several entries in the other fields.
As you can see I can change the names individually in queries and pull the information seperately, it's when roll them altogether is where I'm running into my problem
Thanks for the suggestions that were made, I apoligize for not making the problem clearer.
Here is a copy of what I'm attempting to accomplish. I didn't have it with me last night when posting.
--Pulls the Service Opportunity
SELECT cs.value AS "Service Opportunity"
FROM Cstudent cs
INNER JOIN cattribute ca ON ca.attributeid = cs.attributeid
WHERE ca.name = 'Service Opportunity'
--Pulls the Number of Hours
SELECT cs.value AS 'Number of Hours'

I'm not clear on what all could be the possible key / value combinations for the SetComponentProperty Method. From the examples I have seen its either SqlCommand or OpenRowSet. But I'm not sure about the "AccessMode" with values either 0 or 2. Is there any reference where I get more information on these?

I am quite new in sql. I am writing a report which takes data of one same column and summing them according to the type as described in another column("TR_1"."TTYPE"). So far I have succeeded to get the sum of only one type at a time (by putting WHERE "TR_1"."TTYPE" = or not equal the desired type). For example: I want to create two columns, one showing the sum of the budget and the other the some of the actuals: here is my SQL instruction (the column "TR_1"."TTYPE" give the record type):
******************************************************************
SELECT SUM("TR_1"."AmountLCU")*-1 "Budget",rtrim("TR_1"."COSTCENTER") "Cost Centre",rtrim("TR_1"."ACCOUNT") "Account Num",rtrim("TR_1"."DONOR") "Donor Num", "TR_1"."AmountLCU"*-1 "Amount","TR_1"."TTYPE", rtrim("TR_1"."ACTIVITY") "Activity Code" FROM "scalaDB"."dbo"."A_GL0601_PREVIOUS" "TR_1"
WHERE NOT ("TR_1"."TTYPE"='' OR "TR_1"."TTYPE"='a' OR "TR_1"."TTYPE"='c') AND NOT ("TR_1"."COSTCENTER"=N'' OR "TR_1"."COSTCENTER"=N'0000') AND (("TR_1"."ACCOUNT">=N'26' AND "TR_1"."ACCOUNT"<N'7100') OR ("TR_1"."ACCOUNT">N'7100' AND "TR_1"."ACCOUNT"<=N'7999'))
GROUP BY "TR_1"."COSTCENTER","TR_1"."ACCOUNT","TR_1"."DONOR","TR_1"."ACTIVITY","TR_1"."AmountLCU","TR_1"."TTYPE"
**********************************************************************
Note: the report is written in Crystal reports and the database is SQL Server (not sure of the version)
Thanks in advance
