AdventureWorks In Management Studio Is Gone: How To Reinstall Its Database && Data Warehouse From Script Or By Downloading
Oct 28, 2007
Hi all,
One year ago, I did "Ruuning Setup to Install AdventureWorks Sample Databases and Sample" to install "AdventureWorks" in my SQL Server Management Studio Express. Now, It just have the name "AdventureWorks" on and no contents (no tables, schemas, etc.) in it. In my Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, AdventureWorksDB (162.00 MB) is still there and AdventureWorks (Windows Installer Package [27,992 KB]) is in my C:/drive.
(1) Should I delete the name "AdventureWorks" in my SQL Server Management Studio Express, and remove AdventureWorksDB (162.00 MB) from the Add or Remove Program, before I re-install AdventureWorks, AdventureWorksDW, and Adventure Works DW sample databases and samples from Windows Installer Package [27,992 KB]? Is my old AdventureWorks (Windows Installer Package [27,992 KB]) still good and complete for installation?
(2) SQL Server 2005 Books Online (September 2007) presents "Reinstalling Sample Databases from Script". But (i) I can not find the file instawdb.sql for reinstalling AdventureWorks from script and I do not have AdventureWorks OLTP in my C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsSamples folder, (ii) I can not find the file instawdwdb.sql for reinstalling AdventureWorksDW from script and I do not have AdventureWorks Data Warehouse in my C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsSamples folder either!!??
Please help and tell me what is the best way and some detailed instructions/tips to have AdvenureWorks, AdventureWorksDW, and Adventure Works DW sample databases and samples installed in my SQL Server Management Studio Express.
When I install AdventureWorks.db for SQL Express, it runs without errors. The database files (data and logs) are in the SQL Express 2005 data directory. However, I can not see the database in Managment Studio Express CTP. I've tried repairing and uninstall/install again. Does not help.
I have SQL Express 2005 cleanly installed. I have the pubs and Northwinds databases cleanly installed. (I was able to execute the queries that came for installing these). I can see both pubs and Northwinds in Management Studio Express CTP.
I've installed both the AW db and dw off the MS download. I see the db in the directory I use for other databases, the dw doesnt seem to want to go where I tell it. Anyway, when I connect to my instance of sql (developer's) I dont see the AW db.
I just downloaded AdventureWorks_Data.mdf, AdventureWorks_Data.ldf, AdventureWorksDW_Data.mdf, and AdventureWorksDW_Data.LDF files to the C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1|MSSQLData folder of my Windows XP Pro PC. I tried to attach the AdventureWorks database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express in the following way: I clicked on SQL Server 2005 Express=>SQL Server Management Studio Express=>Right clicked on Databases=> clicked on "Attach..."=> "Attach Databese" showed up. But I can not type in anything under the MDF File Location, Database Name, Attach As, Owner, Status, Message!!!??? What is wrong in my way of doing the attachment of AdventureWorks database (described above)? Please help and advise.
Thanks,
Scott Chang
P. S. I do not have Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. Walkthrough: Install the AdventureWorks Database (http://msdn2.microsoft/en-us/library/ms31035.aspx) : To confirm your SQL Server data directory (Start=>All Programs, Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, Visual Studio Tools, Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt) steps 1 thru 4 can not be applied to my SQL Server Management Studio Express. I read an SQL Express post dated 19 April 2006 and learned the above-mentioned way to attach the AdventureWorks database in the SQL Server Management Studio Express. But that way does not work for me.
I have gone to the page http://www.microsoft.com/express/sql/download/default.aspx to download the 64 bit version of the Management Studio for Vista 64 bit... and its in Chinese.
This is the double astrix version at the very bottom of the page specifically for Vista 64...
Is this something I am doing or is this download link actually to a Chinese Download??
Can someone point me to a download link that is English...
If I try to download using a download manager it stops after 98% (the segment that stops is the first segment). If I try to download without a download manager it stops after 1% (456Kb).
What can I do?
Is there an alternate place where I can download the file?
I have tried to set up the Management Data Warehouse on one of our production servers, but it is not working (not collecting any data) so I want to completely remove it and try the installation again. There does not seem to be any remove/uninstall option.
How to completely remove the Management Data Warehouse?

I've built my SQL Server Express database with SQL Serevr Management Studio Express, and now I want to enter some seed data to assist in building tha app around it. I cannot find an option to manage the data in SQL SMSX, like I used to with Enterprise Manager. I don't want to have to write an app just to get test data in. Seems like this should be a common need. Am I missing something obvious here? Can't find any reference to this in a search of the forums. Please help.
I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason
I have created a database under management studio and i want it to be connected in visual studio but it failed the error msgs said that the database can't be connected coz the database with same name exits but that is not true
How do i get the database that i am using in visual studio into my SQL server management studio? i need to create some scripts to create stored procedures on a live server.
I am going to use Microsoft SQL Server to develop my data warehouse, but one thing makes me confused. Since Analysis Service can create a Star schema database, do I have to pre-set up a Star schema database for ETLed data? Basically, I am wondering what's the relationship between an ETLed database and the one created through the Analysis Services.
Can any one give me an explanation from the implementation perspective?
Hello: I have an old database created in SQL Server 2000, now I can open, access it in SQL Server 2005 Management Studio, but I can't create Data Diagrams. Please advise on how to make it work.... Thank you
How can I Export Database with foreing Key and primary key.
Operation is that SQL2005 Management Studio/Database/Tasks/Export Data
Before Version is SQL2000 we can Selected Copy Object and data between server and then Use Default Options click checked and Select Copy Index, Copy Foreing Primary key vs vs
But this options is not found in the SQL2005 Management Studio/Database/Tasks/Export Data wizard or I can't found it.
How can I export foreing Key and primary key with SQL2005 Management Studio/Database/Tasks/Export Data wizard.
We have a relational database (rd) and a data warehouse (dw). This dw has a table (tw) with all key fields (dimension keys) and metric related (measures) fields. This table is populated with monthly data each month. The tw is joined to various look up views present in the dw to obtain name fields from rd. The DBA wants me to remove the look up views. I now have following 2 options that I can think of –
1)Further de-normalize the tw and store the name fields as well. However, there are two issues with this option –
a.The size of tw will grow tremendously. b.We are storing monthly data and the values in the name fields may change after some time. Then we will have to put in additional views/objects to obtain the latest name.
2)Using ETL, obtain the copy of rd tables overnight in dw. We will then join tw with these tables and there will no longer be cross database joins. However, this will be a burden on maintenance and support.
As of now these are the possible options I can come up with. Which one would you suggest and why? If you have another option, please let me know.
I'm working with the sample database called Adventure Works and I'm encountering data consistency issues : If I sum the TotalDue for one particular territory, for one particular time window from the Sales. SalesOrderHeader table and if I try to compare the result to the LastYearSales and YTDSales from the Sales.SalesTerritory table, I don't get the same number, whatever I try. So did I miss something ? How are the LastYearSales and YTDSales fields from Sales.SalesTerritory calculated ?
Hi,I just unistalled Sql Management Express and now I want to install it again but the installer says the product is already installed,Can somebody help me with this
Hi there, I have installed Sql server 2005 developer on my machine which already has a Sql server 2000 installed on. Now i am trying to query the Sqlserver 2005 data(Ex: from Person.Address located in AdventureWorks database) in Sqlserver 2000 query analyzer: When i try as Select * from Address it said invalid object. But when i explored AdventureWorks database in the Management studio i see it as Person.Address!!! i don't understand what is a Person in Person.Address??? any clues on this? So as a test when i ran select * from Person.Address it did work and i saw the results in query analyzer. Can any one help me understand about this confusion? Thanks-L
i use VSC 2013 (C#, .net4.5, ADO) and i installed SQL Express 2014 on a PC Under W8.1pro. I succeeded to create and access a database with my application. My database is created with a code like:
using ( var connection = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection( "Data Source=(local); Integrated Security=true;User Instance=True;" ) ) { connection.Open(); using ( var command = connection.CreateCommand() ) { command.CommandText = String.Format( "CREATE DATABASE {0} ON PRIMARY (NAME={0}, FILENAME='{1}')", dataBaseName, dbFileName ); command.ExecuteNonQuery(); command.CommandText = String.Format( "EXEC sp_detach_db '{0}', 'true'", dataBaseName ); command.ExecuteNonQuery(); } }
My problem is to manage this database with "Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio"; i fact, i never succeeded to see my database in this tool. The .mdf file of my databae is located in a directory "C:UsersmyuseraccountDocumentsSQLServerExpDBs".
I tried to join my mdf file, but MSqlSMS refuse to display the content of all my user account directories.how to manage such DB in MSqlSMS?
All, I copy my reallistdb.mdf file to this MS SQL SERVER directory .Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData eallistdb.mdf. When I open my ms sql management studio, I don't see my realistdb.mdf under object exploer. Could anyone help? Thanks
It looks like these options are only available in the SQL Server Management Studio? I installed SQL Server Management Express Studio and I can't even find the DTSWizard.exe on my machine.
Can you please help how I can import data from excel or where can I download the SQL Server Management Studio?
In SSMS, I connect Object Explorer to a partially contained database using a contained user login with password. This user has a database role of dbdatareader. When I try to expand the Tables in the database, I get the error:Â
The SELECT permission was denied on the object 'extended_properties', database 'mssqlsystemresource', schema 'sys'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 229)
Is there a way to set permissions for the contained user so that this could be done?
I use the SQL Compact Edition 3.1 as database for a desktop application. Everything works fine, but is it possible to edit the data (e.g. tables and views) in the SQL Server Management Studio? I can make a connection to the SQL CE database, but I can only edit the objects of a table. The option 'Open Table' as in SQL Server (2005) is not avalible? Does anybody know if it posible to edit the data with the Managementstudio (express)?
I use visual studio express 2005, and just downloaded Management Studio Express. (I have SQL Express). I've already created my projects and created database tables and everything but I do not know how to connect an existing database to management studio. Can someone tell me how to connect an existing database to management studio? Thanks, Computergirl
I currently can't connecto to my database in SQL Server 2005 (enterprise) but as soon as I try to use any functions, I get cryptic errors found below. I am about to pull my hair out. Everything was working fine for around 4 days and now everything just blows up. I've tried using both sql authentification and also windows:

I just installed Management Studio 2016 CP1. Unfortunately, the Database Diagrams branch does not show-up when I expand the individual databases in Object Explorer. Interestingly, they show-up in Management Studio 2008
I created a database in SQL Server Management Studio Express. I since detached the database and consequently now I get the below error message when trying to attach it.
Anyone have any ideas? The database is preety much brand new and very small. I can open the database with Visual Studio.
Thanks in Advance.
