Aggregate Functions In Multiple Tables

Jan 12, 2007

Hi, need help in this statement here. I have three tables here, i.e. Sales, SalesItem, & SalesPmt. I want to display a grid that shows the Total Bill and Total Payment amounts.
My try is like this: SELECT SalesNo, SUM(Price*Qty) AS TotalBill, SUM(Payment) AS TotalPayment FROM ... GROUP BY....
No syntax error or whatever found, but the result of the total amounts is incorrect.
Say the data of the respective table below:
SalesItem

No
Qty
Price

1
1
5.00

2
2
12.00

3
4
3.50
SalesPayment

No
Amount

1
10.00

2
5.00
But the result I get from the above query is:

TotalBill
TotalPayment

86.00
45.00
Total Bill should be 43.00 and Total Payment should be 15.00.
Apparently the problem is due to the fact that I and querying on multiple tables. The correct total payment amount was multiplied by the number of rows of sales items (15.00 x 3), while the correct total bill amount was multiplied by the number of rows of sale payments (43.00 x 2).
So, what is the better way of writing this query?

Reporting Services :: SSRS 2008 R2 / Grouping Multiple Tables (tablix) With Different Datasets

Mar 27, 2012

We have a report that was created in SSRS 2008 R2 that has 3 tables with different datasets that share a common ID that I want to use to group them.

If we run the report passing only a single value for the grouped parameter then the report works perfectly.  What we need is for this report to allow multiple values to be selected for this parameter and for the report to run as if the user had selected each value one at a time and run the report with page breaks in between.  Currently, when we pass multiple selected values for the grouping parameter the report displays all values for table 1, then all values for table 2, then all values for table three as below:

Table 1:

Detail rows for Group Param Value 1 ...
Detail rows for Group Param Value 2 ...
Detail rows for Group Param Value 3 ...
....

Table 3:

Detail rows for Group Param Value 1 ...
Detail rows for Group Param Value 2 ...
Detail rows for Group Param Value 3 ...

But we want it to render like this:

Table 1:
Detail rows for Group Param Value 1...
Table 2:
Detail rows for Group Param Value 1...
Table 3:
Detail rows for Group Param Value 1...

[code]....

The page breaks are needed so that when the report is exported to excel each individual report (by group param) will be on its own uniquely named tab.The report must export cleanly to excel and currently does for the single value passed.

Displaying Results In Aggregate Query Without Grouping Everything?

Mar 13, 2012

I have a query where I have customers, date they ordered a swatch, date they ordered an item, and eh date diff between the two. I want to show the MIN date diff for each customer, and also show the swatch date and item date as well. But to use the MIN aggregate, it forces me to group everything, where I just want to group by customer, and have the 2 dates tag along, because i only want one record per customer. What is the easiest way for me to accomplish this?

SAMPLE:

CustKeySwatchDateRugDateDateDiff
10903963126678366
10903963126837525
10903963126960648
10913962286550322
1115886193625764
1129666456646711
1146986229625324
1146986229627647
11469862296667438
1146986656666711
1146986624666743

DESIRED RESULTS:

CustKeySwatchDateRugDateDateDiff

1115886193625764
1129666456646711

SQL Server 2012 :: Trying To Add Third Grouping Set To Return Average Aggregate

Feb 16, 2014

i'm building a query to return metrics that will drive 3 seperate pivot tables showing

1. Total count of LineItems per D_Type each month
2. Total count of LineItems per Status each month
3. Avg count of LineItems per Invoice each month

I am able to get the first two, but having hard time with the 3rd.

Here's some representative ddl
create table Remediation
(Invoice nvarchar(10), D_Type nvarchar(20), Status nvarchar(20), RemediationDate datetime);

insert into Remediation values
--this will create data for Jan, 2014
('501', 'Recycle', 'Pass', getdate()-30),
('501', 'Reuse', 'Pass', getdate()-30),
('501', 'Remarket', 'Fail', getdate()-30),

[code]....

how to add the average metric to this query?

Multiple Aggregate Functions?

Mar 26, 2006

I have a select statement like this:
"SELECT AVG(Price) FROM prices GROUP BY Category"

Which of course returns a list of average prices.

I want to get a sum of that list, something that would work like this:

"SELECT SUM(SELECT AVG(Price) FROM prices GROUP BY Category)"

That code doesn't work, but that's what I want it to do and I'm not sure how to do it.

Thanks!

SQLCE V3.5: Single SDF With Multiple Tables Or Multiple SDFs With Fewer Tables

Mar 21, 2008

Hi! I have a general SQL CE v3.5 design question related to table/file layout. I have an system that has multiple tables that fall into categories of data access. The 3 categories of data access are:

1 is for configuration-related data. There is one application that will read/write to the data, and a second application that will read the data on startup.

1 is for high-performance temporal storage of data. The data objects are all the same type, but they are our own custom object and not just simple types.

1 is for logging where the data will be permanent - unless the configured size/recycling settings cause a resize or cleanup. There will be one application writing alot [potentially] of data depending on log settings, and another application searching/reading sections of data.
When working with data and designing the layout, I like to approach things from a data-centric mindset, because this seems to result in a better performing system. That said, I am thinking about using 3 individual SDF files for the above data access scenarios - as opposed to a single SDF with multiple tables. I'm thinking this would provide better performance in SQL CE because the query engine will not have alot of different types of queries going against the same database file. For instance, the temporal storage is basically reading/writing/deleting various amounts of data. And, this is different from the logging, where the log can grow pretty large - definitely bigger than the default 128 MB. So, it seems logical to manage them separately.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions from the SQL CE experts with regard to my approach. If there are any tips/tricks with respect to different data access scenarios - taking into account performance, type of data access, etc. - I would love to take a look at that.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions,
Bob

Aggregate With Multiple Fields Question

May 7, 2008

I'm having trouble using Aggregate functions with multiple fields.
Here is what I'm trying to do:

SELECT REPLACE(Cust_Key, sum(PRODUCT_CHARGE), count(Tracking_Number), Tracking_Number FROM Shipments = '2008-05-05'
Group By Cust_Key, Tracking_Number

I can get this to work when I use Group By for a single field like Cust_Key but I don't know how to make it work for multiple fields. What is the best way to write something that contains a few aggregate functions on top of multiple fields?

Thanks

UPDATEs With Multiple Aggregate Functions

Howdy,I need to write an update query with multiple aggregate functions. Here is an example:UPDATE tSETt.a = ( select avg(f.q) from dbo.foo f where f.p = t.y ),t.b = ( select sum(f.q) from dbo.foo f where f.p = t.y )FROM dbo.test tBasically I need to get some aggregate statistics about the rows offoo and store them in rows of t. The above statement works fine...butnote how the two subSelect's have the exact same WHERE clause. Thisscreams at me to combine them...but how? I would like to havesomething like this in my query:SELECT avg(f.q), sum(f.q) FROM dbo.foo f WHERE f.p = 2...and somehow store the results in t.a and t.b. Is there any way todo this? Thanks before hand!

Best Records From Multiple Table Aggregate Problem

Oct 29, 2007

I have struggled and can't seem to get the SQL correct to get the records I want.
I have 2 tables containing information from 2 separate independant sensor arrays which collect data about trains in a rail network. I need to get the most current records about the trains at any given time.

Table 1 - Positions
PosId | TrainId | Timestamp | X | Y |
1 | 109 | 5/10/2007 10:01:00 | 62345 | 24998
2 | 210 | 5/10/2007 10:01:00 | 67389 | 22002
3 | 857 | 5/10/2007 10:01:00 | 62599 | 25712
.... (Updates every 15 seconds)
101 | 109 | 5/10/2007 10:07:15 | 62389 | 25002
102 | 210 | 5/10/2007 10:07:15 | 65489 | 25432
103 | 857 | 5/10/2007 10:07:15 | 62889 | 25983

Table 2 - Status
StatusId | TrainId | Timestamp | SensorId | Delay | OffDuty |
1 | 109 | 5/10/2007 10:02:34 | 72 | -3 | N
2 | 857 | 5/10/2007 10:02:48 | 199 | +2 | N
3 | 210 | 5/10/2007 10:04:54 | 85 | -10 | Y
4 | 857 | 5/10/2007 10:05:21 | 231 | +1 | N
5 | 109 | 5/10/2007 10:06:51 | 75 | -5 | N

For any given moment in time, I want to query the database and get the last known position of each train and it's status.
So I want a result table like this:
given time = 10:07:20
TrainId | PosTime | X | Y | StatusTime | SensorId | Delay | OffDuty
109 | 5/10/2007 10:07:15 | 62389 | 25002 | 5/10/2007 10:06:51 | 75 | -5 | N
210 | 5/10/2007 10:07:15 | 65489 | 25432 | 5/10/2007 10:04:54 | 85 | -10 | Y
857 | 5/10/2007 10:07:15 | 62889 | 25983 | 5/10/2007 10:05:21 | 231 | +1 | N

OR given time=10:03:30
1 | 109 | 5/10/2007 10:03:30 | someX | someY | 5/10/2007 10:02:34 | 72 | -3 | N
2 | 210 | 5/10/2007 10:03:30 | someX | someY | null | null | null | null
(Since train 210 it hasn't tripped a status sensor yet, we don't know it's status at that time)
3 | 857 | 5/10/2007 10:03:30 | someX | someY | 5/10/2007 10:02:48 | 199 | +2 | N

Any help to achieve these results would be MOST appreciated, Thanks.

Aggregate Multiple Columns With Different SELECT Criteria

Sep 24, 2007

Let me start with saying thanks to all of you who have helped me (I'm a SQL newbee after doing OO for the past 12+ years)

I need to do several aggregates on multiple columns, with each column having different SELECT Criteria.

Sample Data:

Dept Project Cost CostFlag Schedule ScheduleFlag
D1 D1P1 495 1 135 3
D1 D1P2 960 2 70 2
D1 D1P3 1375 3 105 2
D1 D1P4 1050 2 160 3
D1 D1P5 1890 3 40 1

D2 D2P1 650 1 155 3
D2 D2P2 890 2 125 2
D2 D2P3 1235 3 85 1
D2 D2P4 430 1 140 3

D3 D3P1 1960 3 45 1
D3 D3P2 1490 3 85 1
D3 D3P3 1025 2 135 3
D3 D3P4 615 1 100 2
D3 D3P5 270 1 70 1
D3 D3P6 815 2 155 3

I need to calculate MEAN (average), Standard Deviation, Variance, Range, Span & Median for each data column (Cost, Schedule in the test data), where each data column has different selection criteria. I have the calculations working for each column individually (e.g. funcCalcCost, funcCalcSchedule), but I need to return the calculated values as a single data set:

SELECT Dept, Project, AVG(Cost) as Cost_Mean, MAX(Cost) - MIN(Cost) as Cost_Range, .......

WHERE CostFlag = @InputParameter

GROUP BY Dept, Project

The code above works great - but only for a single column. I need to return a dataset like this:
Dept Project Cost_Mean Cost_Range
D1 D1P1 495 135
D1 D1P2 960 70
D1 D1P3 1375 105

I need to return a dataset like this:

Dept Project Cost_Mean Cost_Range Schedule_Mean Schedule_Range
D1 D1P1 495 135 100 28
D1 D1P2 960 70 42 12
D1 D1P3 1375 105 91 38

I also have working code calculate the MEDIAN (what a pain that was, thank god I found a code example to get me going on the MEDIAN)

Thanks!

Grouping Multiple Datasets

Mar 28, 2008

I have multiple different data regions on one report body. I need to be able to arrange the a few of the data regions so that they are grouped together and print together on same page. I've tried using a list around the data regions that I want to group together, but the list data region needs to have a data set specified and it only allows one to be specified.
Has anyone tackled this before?

Gather Aggregate Data From Two Tables

Jun 13, 2006

I have three tables:

1) Contract - columns ContractNo and ContractName

2) SalesTransactions - multiple rows for each contract - relevant columns: ContractNo, InvoiceDate, Value

3) CostOfSaleTransactions - multiple rows for each contract - relevant columns: ContractNo, TransactionDate, Cost

How do I write a SELECT statement to produce rows containing:

ContractNo
ContractName
Sum of Value for ContractNo between @FromDate and @ToDate
Sum of Cost for ContractNo between @FromDate and @ToDate

Not all Contracts have either Sales or CostOfSales Transactions in the relevant date range and so one or both totals can be zero.

I've written something like:

SELECT CT.ContractNo, CT.ContractName, sum(CT.Value) as TotalValue, Sum(CS.Cost) as TotalCost

FROM Contract CT

INNER JOIN SalesTransactions ST ON CT.ContractNo=ST.ContractNo

INNER JOIN CostOfSaleTransactions CS ON CT.ContractNo=CS.ContractNo

WHERE (ST.InvoiceDate BETWEEN @FromDate AND @ToDate) AND (CS.TransactionDate BETWEEN @FromDate AND @ToDate)

GROUP BY CT.ContractNo, CT.ContractName

The TotalValue and TotalCost figures I get are much higher than expected. I presume this is something to do with the JOINs or WHERE clause. Please can you advise how I get the correct values?

Counting And Grouping With Multiple Criteria

Consider the following dataset:

ID|MD|TYPE
1|JOHN|A
2|JOHN|B
3|JOHN|B
4|BOB|A
5|BOB|A
6|BOB|B
7|BOB|B
8|BOB|B

I need to count the number of IDs for each MD and each TYPE like this:

MD|A|B
JOHN|1|2
BOB|2|3

I only know how to count everything by MD like this:
SELECT MD, COUNT(ID) AS TOTAL
FROM MY_TABLE
GROUP BY MD
ORDER BY MD

The query above results in:

MD|TOTAL
JOHN|3

Grouping On Multiple Datasets - ANY Suggestions

Mar 22, 2007

I have a report with two datasets, DS1 and DS2, which contain the same data fields, but with different values. Like so:

DS1 = sales
salesperson sale_number amount
John Smith 1 $100
John Smith 2 $105
Mary Jane 3 $98
John Smith 4 $275
Mary Jane 5 $92

DS2 = sales with price overrides
salesperson sale_number amount
John Smith 1 $100
Mary Jane 3 $98
Mary Jane 5 $92

Now what I want to do is see how the salespeople are doing. I can use either dataset and get great results independently:

Sales Results:
Salesperson Number of Sales Total Amount
John Smith 3 $480
Mary Jane 2 $190

or

Sales results with price overrides:
Salesperson NumSales with Over Total Amount
John Smith 1 $480
Mary Jane 2 $190

Now what I really want to do is a combo table like so:
Salesperson NumSales with Over Number of Sales %Overrides
John Smith 1 3 33.3%
Mary Jane 2 2 100%

I can not figure out how to do this. If I create a table that has DS1 as its datasource, I need to access DS2 for a count. So I try this for the NumSales with Over:

= count((Fields!sale_number.Value,"DS2"))

This just repeates the total number of sales in DS2, which is 3, for each line; not separating them out by salesperson.

If I try something fancier such as:

=count((Fields!sale_number.Value,"DS2", (Fields!Salesperson.Value,"DS2") like =(Fields!Salesperson.Value))

The report won't even run.

I want to do something along those lines. Does anyone have any ideas how to do this? I've considered subqueries to use salesperson as a filter, but the datasets are so large that the reports end up taking forever to run. I've tried using iif, but it doesn't seem to like using a field from a second dataset. I even tried to use the embedded VB code box to write a function, but then I couldn't pass the full array from the secondary dataset to the function (I could pass it from DS1, but not DS2).

I know this is incredibly simple, but this noob can't figure it out. If anyone has any suggestions I would deeply appreciate it.

Thank you,

Multiple Table Or Matrix Under One Grouping

Dec 27, 2006

Is it possible to have multiple tables or matrixes under one header grouping. I'm having a case where two tables need to be under one grouping (like "Sports vehicle) and under that "sports vehicle" I have two very different tables and on it goes for each grouping (next one like "Off road vehicle), etc.

Is there anyway to do this. I can make this work with one table using the table grouping.

Any suggestions or ideas?

View With Aggregate Function And Joined Tables

Mar 2, 2007

I have created the following view:

Create view vwOrderItemTotal2
AS
SELECT ItemName, fkMenuItemID, Sum(Quantity) as [SumOfMenuITems] FROM OrderItems GROUP BY fkMenuItemId, ItemName

When I present my data in a GridView, it works fine.  For example, several orders for milk are returned as a summary quantity of 26 gallons in a single row of the GridView like this:

26 Milk

Now I need to filter my data by OrderDate and Zipcode.  I created this new view:

Create view vwOrderItemTotal5
AS
SELECT Orders.Zipcode, Orders.OrderDate, OrderItems.ItemName, OrderItems.fkMenuItemID, Sum(Quantity) as [SumOfMenuITems]
FROM Orders INNER JOIN OrderItems
ON Orders.OrderID = OrderItems.fkOrderID
GROUP BY fkMenuItemId, ItemName, Zipcode, OrderDate

When I present my data in a Gridview using the new view I get a GridView with multiple rows for milk where each order has its own row like this:

1 Milk
5 Milk
6 Milk
6 Milk
3 Milk
1 Milk
4 Milk

But I want the data presentation in one row for each ItemName (e.g. Milk) as with my first view.  Can I adjust my new view to achieve this, or should I stick with my first view (vwOrderItemTotal2) and adjust the Select Command in my SqlDataSource (hasn’t worked yet).
I think that what I want is for the returned data to be grouped by fkMenuItemId only, but the sql server admin won’t let me create a view without including the other fields in the Group By clause.  Thanks for any help provided in solving this.

SQL Server 2012 :: Using CTE To Aggregate Separate Tables?

Aug 20, 2014

I am trying to tie together tables that show quantities of a product committed to an order and quantities on hand by a location.

My end result should look like the below example.

Item Location QtyOnHandByLocation SumQtyCommitTotal
Prod1 NJ 10 10
Prod1 NY 10 0
Prod1 FL 0 0
Prod1 PA 0 0

So I can see I have 10 items in NJ On Hand and Committed to an order. 10 available in NY but not on an order. Then the other two locations have no quantities.

Below is the CTE but it produces inaccurate results. I've tried running it several different ways by playing with the grouping but have no luck thus far.

--create the temp table
Create table #SalesLine
(
Novarchar (50) not null
, LocationCodevarchar (50) not null
, QtyCommitint not null
)
create table #ItemLedgerEntry

[code]....

I am close to the desired results but can't find a way.

For just one date column it is pretty straight forward i.e., just do a select count and group by DATEPART ( Mm, DateField)
but for multiple columns i am in a total fix....

can please someone help me out...

appreciate your help

Merging Two Tables Then Grouping Them

Feb 14, 2005

I have two tables, one is named Employee and the other Job_title. I'm trying to combine the two tables so I can group certain columns.

This is what I thought of so far and please correct me if I'm wrong.

SELECT Last_name FROM Employee
UNION
SELECT Job_title_code FROM Job_title
GROUP BY Exempt_non_exempt
FROM Job_title

Now this is just a theory (obviously it doesn't work) but basiclly I'm trying to have columns from two tables and have the grouped.

Grouping Common Functionality In Multiple Stored Procedures

Oct 22, 2007

Hi i have always used views in my code to group common functionality in my sql expressions and then i can simply call these views in my data access layer by saing:
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("SELECT * FROM vw_Documents WHERE CategoryID = @CategoryID", cn);
However my view has become so complicated that i had to convert it to a stored procedure called sp_Documents.  The problem now though is that is that i wish to do queries against the data returned but i can't simply say:
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("SELECT * FROM sp_Documents WHERE CategoryID = @CategoryID", cn);
The only way i can see to do it is to create a stored procedure for every single senario i have passing in the appropriate values as parameters.  This seems a pretty messy solution to me because i would have repeated logic in all my stored procedures.  Therefore i was wondering if there's a simpler way for me to do this or am i just being lazy :).
Appreciate if someone could help,

Join 2 Tables And Grouping Problem

Aug 4, 2005

Hello Everyone,

I have two tables
1.) Agenda
AgendaID, Agenda_Title, Agenda_ConfCode

2.)SubAgenda
subAgendaID, subAgenda_AgendaID, subAgenda_Title

Basically I need the sub agenda to display underneath its Agenda Title, based on AgendaID = subAgenda_AgendaID...but when i loop over the query, it displays the agenda as many times as the sub agenda. I Think i need to group it somehow, or use a nested select?

The output should look like this:

Agenda1
SubAgenda 1
SubAgenda 2
SubAgenda 3

Agenda 2
SubAgenda 1
SubAgenda 2

BUT this is what I Get

Agenda 1
SubAgenda 1
Agenda 1
SubAgenda 2
etc...

Please help!
Thanks.

Transact SQL :: Sum Values By Grouping Name From Two Tables

Nov 6, 2015

I have two tbles that have ItemName and their bill amount

a) tblLunch

which shows records like below

Invoice   Item                          Amount
--------------------------------------------
1             COFFEE                       1000.00
2             TEA                          2000.00
3             ICE CREAM                1000.00

b) tblDinner

which shows records like below

Invoice   Item                      Amount
------------------------------------------------------------
1             COFFEE                  1000.00
2             TEA                        2000.00
3             PASTA         1000.00

I want to perform a query that should SUM Amount Columns by Grouping the Item from both the tables, so we could get the following result

Item                      Amount
------------------------------
COFFEE                  2000.00
TEA                        4000.00
ICE CREAM           1000.00
PASTA                    1000.00

Union Two Tables With Relational Ordering / Grouping?

Jul 16, 2012

I have two tables with data that I need to get and display in a combobox. What I want to do is have the parent table listed in the combobox with all of its children indented. Sorted by parent then by child.

This SQL seems to be more complex than I have done previously

I can get all of the records from both tables easily:

Code:
SELECT strName, ID FROM tblParents as pp
INNER JOIN tblChildren as cc
ON cc.pID = pp.uiGUID
UNION (SELECT strName FROM tblChildren as c
INNER JOIN tblParents as p
ON c.pID = p.ID)

However, this simply returns a list that is not ordered in any fashion. I'd like to have all of the parent's children shown under the parent name (there is only 1 parent per child and multiple children per parent)

Is Grouping In Tables Based On Field Values Possible?!

Mar 26, 2008

I want to group by a fields value in a table. I have a purchase table where contracts and orders are stored in together. Now what I need is, I have to group only by the rows that contain an identical contract_no and order_no as those records represent the actual contract. the other rows contain order data-sets which need to be subtracted from the contracts values.

datasource:

contract_no order_no name amount
12 12 contract1 1,000,000
12 215 order215 50,000
12 460 order460 75,000
280 280 contract2 500,000
280 340 order340 10,000
280 410 order410 9,000

I want to display each order that took place via drilldown/hide function in the table, and calculate the amount from the contract that is left.

desired result report:

12 contract1 1,000,000
order 215 50,000
order 460 75,000

amount left 875,000
