All Maintenance Jobs On New Servers Failing

Sep 2, 2002

Hi all,

I've just set up 2 new SQL 7.0 servers, and my new maintenance jobs - backups, optimisations, consistency check jobs etc - are all mysteriously failing. I've created them both with the Maintenance Wizard, and again by hand. I've attempted manual and scheduled runs. All to no avail. Nor do they populate the sysmainthistory table, although they're configured to do so. The mystery is that we have successfully installed some user DTS processes, and THEIR jobs work. In order to resolve the problem, I've:

(1) ensured the Agent service is running;

(2) ensured adequate space on the drive etc;

(3) verified that sqlmaint.exe exists in Mssqlinn;

(4) unchecked the 'attempt to repair minor errors' box (I read this was a known cause of the problem);

I've got some clues to go on, but nothing conclusive;

'sqlmaint.exe failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029). The step failed.'

Executed as user: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM. sqlmaint.exe
failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029). The step
failed.

Additionally, both servers hold databases that I imported from another server-INCLUDING the msdb, and BOTH have the same problems and same error messages. This cannot be a coincidence.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

JB.

Maintenance Jobs Failing SSIS Subsystem Failed To Load

May 1, 2008

Environment: SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition x64, 3 server cluster. Two active servers with seperate instances and one passive server. SQL Server was installed on the two active servers.

Problem: When I fail over either of my instances to the passive server in the cluster my maintenance jobs fail to run and there are error messages in the application event viewer "SSIS Subsystem failed to load". I am guessing that all of the needed components are not installed on the passive server? Is this a close guess? If so, exactly what components are missing and do you have to have another license to install them?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Some Jobs Failing In SQL

Dec 20, 2007

I was hoping if someone can help me shed some light on the following error messages -

Some of the billing jobs in SQL are failing, here is the message from application log - This is happening on the production server.

"SQL Server Scheduled Job 'Transaction Log Backup Job for DB Maintenance Plan 'DB Maintenance Plan3'' (0x8BCD2C33DF5EC447BC7F1228E2C455E4) - Status: Failed - Invoked on: 2007-12-20 06:00:01 - Message: The job failed. The Job was invoked by Schedule 54 (Schedule 1). The last step to run was step 1 (Step 1)."

Has anyone seen this message before, whats a way to fix this issue.

Maintenance Routines Failing

Nov 20, 2001

Hi, I recently migrated from SQL*Server v7.0 to v2000. The maintenance routines on the new v2000 was set up (this is also a new server - completely new machine) are not running. When they attempt to run, I get the following error:

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Repair statement not processed. Database needs to be in single user mode.

Consequently, no backups no repair, the only thing in the maintenance routine that does work is the rebuilding of indexes. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

DB Maintenance Plan Failing

Jan 26, 2001

Hi. I'm using the db maint. plan to do database & trans.log backups, and it's failing on my databases that are set to use the 'simple' recovery method (similar to 'trunc. log on checkpoint'). The SQL Agent job then shows up as failed, although what's really happened is that it's just skipped over the databases that are in that mode.

To clarify this, regular database backups complete successfully, while trans.log backups fail due to the databases set to simple recovery.

Does anyone know how to 'fix' this?

Thx,
Larry

Maintenance Plan Keeps Failing

Hello. I setup a new maintenance plan for my SQL2005 SP2 server to do a full backup and transaction log backup on all databases (System and 3 User defined).

Failing Backup Jobs

Dec 14, 2005

I have a DB Maintenance plan created that performs optimizations, integrity checks, and a database backup. The optimizations and integrity checks work fine, but the backup job fails. The backup job is to write the .bak file to a network share.
When I change the owner of the job to "sqluser", the job fails at step 0 withe the following error:
The job failed. Unable to determine if the owner (rsnsqluser) of job DB Backup Job for DB Maintenance Plan 'Online Database Server Maintenance Plan' has server access (reason: Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'rsnsqluser'. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 8198)).
Checked with the system admin for this server and sqluser has priviledges to do everything, including write to the network share.

So, now I change the owner of the same maintenance job from sqluser to "sa". I now get this error:
Executed as user: RSNsqluser. sqlmaint.exe failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029). The step failed.

Checked the settings for MSSQLSERVER and SQLSERVERAGENT in Control Panel. Everything seems to be in order according to the other threads I have read.

For grins, I tried to ensure the sqluser password on the SQL Server Agent was correct. When I try to enter the new password I get this:
sql server agent startup account could not be verified
I click yes (it asks if I want to continue anyway).
Is the password not being registered properly in the agent?

One other thing, the sqluser user is listed under Security|Logins as connecting with Windows Authentication. We have several other servers that are set up the same and work fine. What am I missing? I'm pulling my hair out!

Failing Database Maintenance Plan

Jan 17, 2005

Hi there,

I have a Database maintenance plan (DMP) that always fails!
The plan reorganises data and index pages and checks database integrity.
The plan covers several databases, and it always fails on the same database.

The error message (in the DMP history) is the following: "[Microsoft SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 01000)] Error 0: This server has been disconnected. You must reconnect to perform this operation."

The odd thing is that the DMP is locally executed, so I don't see why the network could be an issue here.

Thank you for your time!

Failing Scheduled Jobs - Help - Urgent

Jul 27, 2001

When I change the SA password on my server the current Scheduled SQL Jobs no longer work. If I run DTS packages by themselves and not from the Scheduled job window they work fine. I am using the sa as the Owner of the jobs and my SQL Agents services use a Domain Account. If I rebuild the jobs after the sa password is change they work fine. However, I don't want to rebuild 100 jobs every time I change my SA password. How can I fix or get around this problem without rebuilding my jobs?

SQL Server Agent Running; Jobs Failing

Jul 9, 2007

Hi. I was wondering if anyone has ever had a problem where nothing seems to be wrong with the server, and SQL Server Agent is up and running, but jobs fail. We had a job run at midnight, and it was the last successful run. Every job failed after that, with an error stating "Unable to retrieve steps for job..." There doesn't seem to be any reason for the problem. The jobs were kicked off manually and they all ran.

The only other error messages we could find were in the Application Event Viewer on the server. But the first error happened days ago and said this: "The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( .NET Runtime ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Unable to open shim database version registry key - v2.0.50727.00000."

Since then, every few seconds this error occurred: "Windows cannot load extensible counter DLL MSSQLServerOLAPService, the first DWORD in data section is the Windows error code."

We turned off the performance monitor counters and that error stopped. But we still have no idea if that was the cause of the problem.

This isn't the first time we've had an issue with jobs failing because the steps couldn't be 'found', while SQL Server Agent was up and running.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks!

Jobs Generated By Maintenance Planner

Jul 25, 2000

Using the maintenance planner wizard can create four jobs:

1. Backup DB
2. Integrity checks
3. Optimizations
4. Log backup

depending on what choices you make.

It appears to me that when the scheduled date/time comes,
that the jobs run as scheduled.

My questions are:

a. If I manually start one of the four jobs, will that job and
only that job execute?

OR

b. Will all four execute?

OR

c. Will the manual execution of a specific job cause the other
jobs to be executed also?

Any insight into how this function works is much appreciated!!!

How To Export Jobs And Maintenance Plans?

Try to 'one step' to export all jobs and related maintenance plans from serverA to serverB, via backup msdb from A and restore to B.

After restore msdb to serverB, I saw all jobs and related maintenance plans, but the jobs are not runable.

Do I have to save jobs scripts one by one from A, then rerun on B one by one?

SQL 2012 :: Changing SA Account Name Causes Maintenance Jobs To Fail

Sep 23, 2014

SQL 2012 Standard on Windows Server 2012 Standard

After observing brute force attacks on our VPS myhosting instance against the SA login, I change the SA login name. Now my two new backup jobs are failing. The agent service logs in as NT ServiceSQLSERVERAGENT. Nothing changed there (so far as I know and I'm the only one who should be on the VPS). The job owner was SA and after changing the SA account that was reflected in the SSMS gui; job owner 'newsaname'. I'm sure I can just rebuild the maintenance plans but I'd like to know what happened.

Also, I would like to learn more about the brute force attacks and how to determine what port they are comming in on. I see an IP address associated with them. Does that mean they are coming in on 1433 or 1434?

SQL 2000 Maintenance Plan And Multi-step Jobs

Mar 9, 2006

Hi,

I'm working with SQL 2000 and am just learning about Maintenance Plans (MP). They seem convenient, but after some time, I'm wondering if they're the best approach long-term. Here are my experiences.

Using the MP Wizard, I created a plan with tasks from all the dialogs:

- Optimize database
- Check integrity
- Backup database
- Backup transaction log
- Write a report

I was puzzled to find 4 jobs were created, each with just 1 step, and staggered starting times. I expected to find 1 job with 4 steps. So, brimming with confidence, I did just that. I combined all 4 into 1 job, deleted the 3 other MP created jobs, and checked for any job-specific details in the code. However now when I open the MP, I get this pop-up:

"One or more of the jobs created for this plan has had additional steps added to it. It is not recommended that jobs created by the maintenance plan be modified in any way."

Okay, fair warning. Yet it appears the job and all steps run successfully, both on demand, and on a schedule. So now I'm wondering if jobs always need a MP. If I don't mind working with xp_sqlmaint syntax, it appears the only thing I'm giving up is the MP history. But I expect job history and '-WriteHistory' will minimize that loss.

I searched BOL, this Forum, and Google, and found a couple articles. One author preferred the ease of the Wizard, another preferred the control and added features of T-SQL, but both created a MP in their examples. So I'm hoping some experienced DBAs can advise.

If I create a job with multiple steps, and no MP, are there important things I give up or problems I create?
Is this approach a bad idea in SQL 2005?

At this stage, I don't need replication or other advanced features. Just simple database maintenance.

Thank you,
- Martin

SQL Server 2008 :: Changed Database From Full To Simple - Maintenance Plan Failing

Mar 6, 2015

One of my programmers changed their database from full to Simple recovery. Saw that my job that backs up the Full Recovery mode databases failed, so I moved that database to my Simple database backup job plan and removed it from the Full Recovery job. I am unable to remove the db from the Transaction Log task on the Full Plan because when I try to edit that job "Databases with Simple Recovery will be excluded"

My transaction log backups are still failing with the following error: "The statement BACKUP LOG is not allowed while the recovery model is SIMPLE. Use BACKUP DATABASE or change the recovery model using ALTER DATABASE. BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.Just want to remove that database so my Full Recovery backup job does not try to back it up.

Maintenance Plan Failing With Login Failed For User 'sa'. [CLIENT: &&<local Machine&&>]

Nov 28, 2007

Maintenance plan for bakcup is failing with "Login failed for user 'sa'. [CLIENT: <local machine>]"

I went to the Maintenance Plan and opened the Subplan. I clicked the "Manage Connections"

It has three tabs:

Name: Local Server Connection
Server: prod
Authentication: SQL Server Authentication

I clicked the Edit and it shows the Connection Properties:

It says: Enter information to logon to the server. "Use a specific Username and Password" is checked. Username is set as "sa" while the password is empty. I typed in the correct password and pressed Ok. When I go back again, the password still shows empty. I tried to run the plan and it again fails. Do you know why it is not showing the password as blank even if I try to save the password.

Monitoring Jobs Across Servers/versions

Jan 30, 2008

Hi all,
I've been digging around the last few days, looking for the best way to monitor all the jobs on all my prod servers. Using EM or SSMS is BS. I've been thinking that perhaps the best strategy is to write or modify a script that gathers information from sysjobs and sysjobhistory on all servers and then inserts it into my main DBA database on my "admin" server. Of course this script would have to be on all servers and be in a scheduled job itself. I'm thinking that I should probably categorize every job in the company and break out my reports that way too. I'll probably throw all the data into a cube so I can do some at a glance checks to see that everything is running ok. I'd like to trend run times with the data too.

Anyway as with most fun projects there are many different way to accomplish this. I've hit on one above and I've seen several others. What are some of the solutions you guys have come up with, what have you tried that didn't work so well and what are some pitfalls that I should avoid in setting this up?

SQL 2012 :: Maintenance Plan Exporting To Other Servers?

Oct 7, 2014

Server: SQL Server 2012 Enterprise 64bit

I created a maintenance plan with full user database backups, backup files cleanup, and database shrink.

I did it in SSMS and it also created "Reporting Task for subplan-{xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx}".

It works fine in the development server where I created the plan. I imported the same into other environments test, stage, and prod. I did use BIDS to change the connection string manual "Local server connection". The job runs fine in other environments but it fails at the end where the "Reporting Task for subplan" is executed. I looked at the dtsx file codes and I could not find anything wrong.

It seems to be a bug at the Microsoft side.

Maintenance Plan Wizard Vs Tsql Maintenance

Aug 17, 2007

Hello,

I have a question that I hope someone can clear up for me. I have come across a number of different suggestions on DB maintenance, for example reindexing with the following script:

USE DatabaseName --Enter the name of the database you want to reindex

DECLARE @TableName varchar(255)

DECLARE TableCursor CURSOR FOR
SELECT table_name FROM information_schema.tables
WHERE table_type = 'base table'

OPEN TableCursor

FETCH NEXT FROM TableCursor INTO @TableName
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN
DBCC DBREINDEX(@TableName,' ',90)
FETCH NEXT FROM TableCursor INTO @TableName
END

CLOSE TableCursor

DEALLOCATE TableCursor

My question is, doesn't the maintenance plan have this functionality inherent in it when you create the maintenance jobs to reindex? Is there a benefit to scripting things out vs just using the maintenance plan wizard for this sort of thing and any of the items it covers? I came from an Oracle background where this was a no-brainer but I am a bit confused on the choices with SQL Server.

Thanks.

Sql Report Works Fine On Internal Servers - Hosed On External Servers - Need Some Help

Nov 21, 2007

I have a report that was designed using SQL Reporting Services that sits on a SQL reporting server. It's nothing too exciting, it is essentially a three page application with legal jumbo on pages 2 and 3 and applicant data in fields on page 1.

We use rectangles to force page breaks to page 2 and to page 3.

When running the report on the report server, it shows and prints fine.

When running the report from the QA website internally, it shows and prints just fine.

When running the report from the production website from a machine internally, it shows and prints just fine.

When running the report from outside of the company network, the report is jacked. It obliterates large chunks of text, crams text together, and creates blank pages.

I need help in determining where I even begin with trouble shooting this!

Linking SQL 2005 Servers To SQL 2000 Servers Problems

Sep 27, 2007

I am in the middle of a major migraton project, moving from x86 SQL 2000 to IA64 SQL 2005. I have a business need to link to several legacy servers. I have a number of problems I am trying to solve.

1) Linking a Kerberos server to a non-Kerberos server.
2) Linking x64 or IA64 servers to x86 servers.
3) Linking SQL 2005 to SQL 2000.

Two of the errors I am encountering are:
------------------------------
TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Communication link failure".
(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10054)
------------------------------
And
------------------------------
The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for the linked server "SCDC250DB" reported an error. Authentication failed.
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB".
OLE DB provider "SQLCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Invalid authorization specification".
(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7399)

If someone has worked through these problems before, I would appreciate it if you could direct me to the relevant documentation to resolve these issues.
