Allow Iis To Connect To A Sql Express Database

Mar 26, 2007

Folks,

I have an asp.net web app developed in visual studio 2005. The app works fine with the development server from visual studio and sql express. When I try to test the app under IIS before deploying to my host I get a permission not allowed message.

"[SqlException (0x80131904): User does not have permission to perform this action.]".

How do I give my web app access to my sql server database?

Thanks

Mar 16, 2007

Hi am very new with VB.net (Visual Studio 2005) and the first time try to use the sql server 2005 express. I did create a trial.mdf (local server) and complete procedure to attach the trial1.mdf in Microsoft SQL Management Studio Express.

I try to use VB to connect /open/close it with the following codes: (but failed)

-----------------------------------------------

Imports System.Data.SqlClient

Public Class Form1
'Link database
Dim DB_Location = "c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataTrial1.mdf"
Dim MyConnection = "Server=localhost; DataBase= " & DB_Location & "Integrated Security=SSPI"
Dim sqlConnection As New SqlConnection(MyConnection)

'Use database
Dim strSQL As String = "SELECT FROM Trial1 WHERE col2 = 'trial' "
Dim cmd As New SqlCommand(strSQL, MyConnection)

sqlConnection.Open()  ' ----> error
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() ' ----> error
sqlConnection.Close() ' ----> error

End Class

-------------------------------------------

At the last 3 line of codes I got the errors ... can someone explain why & help me to correct it?

Thanks for any help

How To Connect To SQL Server Express 2005 Database At The Same Time From Both SSMSE And VB2005 Application ?

Jan 13, 2007

Here is the situation:

I have SQL server express 2005 installed on my pc as instance SQLEXPRESS.

I have created a Visual Basic applicaion with the following as connection to the SQL server express 2005 running on the same PC:
****************************************************************************************************
Dim lconnectionString As String Dim builder As New SqlConnectionStringBuilder Dim cmd As New SqlCommand Dim reader As SqlDataReader Dim parameter As SqlParameter builder("Data Source") = ".SQLEXPRESS" builder("Initial Catalog") = "" builder("AttachDbFilename") = "C:My DocumentsVisual Studio 2005Projectsabcabcabc.mdf" builder("Integrated Security") = True builder("User Instance") = True lconnectionString = builder.ConnectionString Dim sqlConnection1 As New SqlConnection(lconnectionString) cmd.CommandText = "SP_add_collection" cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure cmd.Connection = sqlConnection1 sqlConnection1.Open()
*******************************************************************************************************************

It seems that i can not connect to the abc.mdf in SSMSE while the VB program is running. (ERROR:
Database 'C:My DocumentsVisual Studio 2005Projectsabcabcabc.mdf' cannot be opened due to inaccessible files or insufficient memory or disk space. See the SQL Server errorlog for details. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) )

If i connect to the abc.mdf first in SSMSE, then run the VB program afterwards, it gives me the error on this line -- sqlConnection1.Open()

I want to be able to access the abc.mdf database with both SSMSE and VB at the same time. Could anyone help me on this ?

Thanks very much !

Cannot Connect W/ Java App But Can Connect W/ .Net App - SQL Server Express 2005

Dec 12, 2006

I'm having a problem connecting with a Java application but I CAN connect using my .Net application - the user name and password are the same for both (using the same database on SQL Server Express 2005).

The error I get is: "com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Cannot open database "CORNERS" requested by the login. The login failed." An interesing note - I get the same message if the database is not running.

SQL Server Express 2005 is installed in mixed mode.

Here is my connection string in the .Net appplication: <add key="connectString" value="Server=(local);UID=sa;PWD=myPasswd;Database=CORNERS" />.

These are my values in my Java app web.xml -

<init-param>
<param-name>DBDriver</param-name>
<param-value>com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBURL</param-name> <param-value>jdbc:sqlserver://localhostsqlexpress:1055;databaseName=CORNERS</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBUser</param-name>
<param-value>sa</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBPwd</param-name>
<param-value>myPasswd</param-value>
</init-param>.

And yes, the port is 1055 - I checked to find it.

I am using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver 1.0 (sqljdbc_1.0.809.102).

Does anyone have any idea what is wrong so that the login fails in the Java application but works in the .Net application?

I Can No Longer Connect To My SQL Server Express 2005 From Manager Studio Express

Sep 28, 2006

Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server.

I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah.

Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Can't Connect To Sql Server 2005 Database Using Vb 2005 Express

Nov 21, 2006

I've used Sql Server 2000 and Visual Studio 2003 for a few years. I've started a new position and they have access to Sql Server 2005 Standard and Visual Basic 2005 Express which I'd like to use for a new project. So I installed Sql Server 2005 and then VB 2005 Express on my workstation. I didn't choose the Sql Server option for VB Express because I already had Sql Server 2005 Standard installed with a simple database created. I created a simple vb project that justs connects to the database but I get the following error.

Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0000, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.
I looked at permissions in the database and it looks ok. I'm the db owner and I'm using Windows Auth. My connection string is

"Data Source=MySystem;initial catalog=AdventureWorks;integrated security=true;"

I thought I'd look at the starter kit to get some ideas about what the problem is, but when I started the movie starter kit project, it was upset that I didn't have Sql Server 2005 EXPRESS installed. Yea, but I do have Sql Server 2005 Standard installed.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Can't Connect To SQL 2005 Express With SQL Server Management Studio Express

Mar 10, 2006

I've seen the following error posted when people try to connect to their server via their applications but didn't see anyone having problems when trying to connect with SQL Server Management Studio Express. Am I missing something here? This is the error:<<An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)>>The server is not remote so I don't see why I need to enable remote connection. I am also using the default connection settings.

Sql Server Express And VB.net Express - Unable To Connect...

May 31, 2007

Hi!

I'm trying to connect a DB in SQL express with a program in VB.NET Express. I'm using the Data Source Configuration Wizzard. When I select the file (.mdf), the following message appears:

Unable to open the physical file "path to my file". Operating system error 5: "5(error not found)".

An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file 'myFile' failed. A database with the same name exists, or secified file cannot be opened, or it is located in UNC share.

I'm using the Windows authentication for this, but if I try with the sa user, I get the following message:

Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance. The connection will be closed.

Any ideas to solve this?

Thanks

Unable To Connect .NET To SQL Express 5!!!!

Feb 10, 2008

Cannot someone please help me with following problem.  I am trying to create a program to update a sql datbase from.NET 2003.  I am doing this by using SQL Server Express 5.  The problem is, is that when I run the program and click the button to view the table in SQL Express 5 I keep getting an 'System.NullReferenceException' and the table is not shown. When I look at the debug details it says that 'object reference not set to an instance of an object'.
Am not sure where am goin wrong as the connection is opened to the local server in SQL Express and I have created a connection object and initialised it to the address fo the datatable in SQL.
Please find below the code I am working on which shows the connection string in question and the table being called in button 6  which causes the exception.

VC++ Fails To Connect To SQL Express

Feb 11, 2008

Hi , have a database on sqlexpress 2005 that I would like to use from vs 2008 c++. Using :

String ^ connectString = "Data Source=localhost;Database=sqlexpress\FAR_HISTORY;UID=eclipz;Password=litespeed";

SqlConnection^ sqlconn = gcnew SqlConnection(connectString);

sqlconn->Open();

and it fails: Additional information: Login failed for user 'eclipz'. I have the user id created under the "security tab" in SQL Server Management Studio express with the correct DB.

Next I tried Database="Trusted_Connection=yes............."

It fails again.

But If I try connecting to the Northwind DB created under MSDE 2000 using the "sa" account it logins ok !!!!!!

Can't Connect To Express Edition

Feb 5, 2007

I have a huge connectivity issue that I can't seem to solve.

We're using SQL Express Edition as a local data store that is participating as a subscriber to SQL Server Enterprise Edition. Perfectly valid and supported.

Now the issue. I have the Express Edition on one machine connected just fine, but the other one absolutely refuses. Here is what I did for the one that connected correctly:

1. Enable remote connections for the Express Edition instance and restart the instance

2. Added the SQL Agent service account on the server to the SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$machine$SQLEXPRESS group on the local machine (yes, I want it to have that level of authority)

3. Connected to the machine with Express Edition to the network via VPN.

4. On the server, opened Management Studio and connected to the Express Edition on the machine to verify connectivity

Everything works.

On the machine that refuses, I've duplicated the steps above and it absolutely refuses to connect. I have verified that remote connections are enabled. I have tried connecting via both name as well as IP, just to rule out DNS resolution - neither works. I don't have any security issues. I can go all the way to mapping the c$ share on the machine with the Express Edition directly from the desktop of the server. I can browse for SQL Servers on the network and the machine shows up in the list, so I know that it is being recognized as having an instance of SQL Server. I can't find a single, solitary reason why it should throw a login failure. The message that I'm getting is as follows:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

Does anyone have any ideas?

Is It Possible To Connect To SQL Express Without Network?

Sep 6, 2007

I have notebook, client server application and sql express sp2 on this notebook.
Also, I know domain user login/password,
but I don't know any local user name/password
and I don't know any sql server user name/password.
Domain user is not a local administrator on this notebook.

When notebook connected to the office LAN I am working good with my app-> my sql express as a domain/user.

I'd like to work at home too. I can logon to the system (XP SP2) using domain account when notebook has no network connection. (probably OS caches something)

Is it possible to work with sql express using domain login when no network connection?

PS. old version of this software used MSDE 2000 and it was possible(!).

Thank you.

Can't Connect To SQL Express 2005

Apr 14, 2006

I have a web app running on a laptop (for demo purposes) with the following connect string:

"datasource=<machine name>SQLExpress;initial catalog=BlueTarp;User ID=sa;Password=xxx"

I can connect to this instance using both oSQL or sqlcmd and can select from the tables within BlueTarp, but my web app won't connect, and I can't figure out why!!

When I installed SQL Express, I used a named instance, called "SQLExpress".

I'm using mixed mode authentication.

One strange thing is that I can connect to either SQLExpress or MSSQLSERVER instances, but they appear to be the same instance -- I can use bluetarp in both.

when I use SQLExpress for instance name in web.config I get "SQL Server does not exist or access denied"

when I use MSSQLServer for instance name in web.config I get "Invalid connection"

And in fiddling with the web.config, I somehow did something to get a machine.config error, something like "machine.config couldn't be loaded because of an unloaded appdomain".

It's driving me nuts because I've spent a good 40 hours on this stupid problem, throwing the whole margin down the toilet.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you,

Aarron

Cannot Connect To SQL Express Db With Visual C++

Mar 22, 2007

I've installed both SQL Server Express and Visual C++. I'm trying to connect to a SQL database, but keep receiving various errors. This is what I've done so far.

1. Eventually, I used the surface area manager to allow a remote connect.

2. The server and my development environment exist on the same virtual machine, I created with Virtual Pc.

3. I'm running Vista as my operating system.

4. My Data Source wizard looks like this:

Data Source: MS SQL Database File

Database file name: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataETS.mdf

If I use Windows Authen I get the following error:

Unable to open physical file "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataETS_log.ldf" Operating System Error 5: (Access is Denied). An attempt to attach to an auto-named database for file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataETS.mdf failed. A database with the same name exist , or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on a UNC share.

If I use SQL Server Authen I get the following error:

Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance. The connection will be closed.

I'm new to this. I really would like help in knowing what these errors mean and how to get pass them. But this is very, very, very, frustrating. First off, there was no instructions on allowing remote connections. I stumble upon it myself. Giving permission to the file, stumble upon myself. I spent 4 days with a You do not have permission to open file error. Didn't realize I didn't have permission.

I need a step by step on what to do. I can be emailed at gregw.energytaxsolutions@hotmail.com if need be.

If this is in the wrong place, moderator please move to the correct area.
