Developers want to give users the ability to schedule and run processes, which may be executables, T-SQL, DTS, Active Scripting, etc. I don't want to enable a proxy account due to the well documented security problems. Has anyone come up with a good way to do this?
I'm trying to set up SQL Server so that people with Enterprise Mgr can create a DB registration to their DB only (sql.yoursite.com). Are there any tutorials out there for doing this?
I'm relatively new to administering SQL Server, hence this basic question.
What are the standard practice tool(s)/methods for allowing users access to a database to edit data? In this case, these are engineers (not programmers) that need to edit some values. The practice in the past has been to install Enterprise Manager on their PC. However, this does not seem proper to me and I was thinking more along the lines of having them use Access instead.
I compare Enterpise Manager in SQL Server as an equilvalent to Enterprise Manager in Oracle - these are tools only for use by database administrators. Is this a correct correlation, or is Enterpise Manager in SQL Server a tool that users (and programmers?) are commonly allowed to use? In the case of common users, I would think not.
I would like to allow a particular user to truncate a log file in astored procedure that the user runs every day. At this moment the onlypersonnel that can truncate the log file are personnel with sysadminrights. Is there any way to do this in sql server 2005 withoutgranting this user sysadmin rights (something we REALLY don't want todo)? Thanks for all your help in advance.Dave C.
I'm building a package that will periodically be used to import data from an excel file to update a SQL database. I've done most of it but I am completely stuck on one bit:
How can I build something in that allows the user to browse for the Excel file to be imported (like you do when you set up the Excel Connection Manager and it asks which file)?
My ideal world would be someway of calling just that part of the Import wizard.
There are lots of things about dynamically choosing the file using variables but they don't allow end-user interaction. It may be that I'm trying to do something I shouldn't.........
is this even possible in reporting services? I already deployed reports for our client using Reporting Services 2000, one of their complaints was that the dropdownlist of the reports contains a very long list of data, this list cannot be shorten since all data are required. Is there a way to let the users type in characters, not only one character to find the exact data they want. The data in the drop down list are needed because these data are parameters.
Are there any web based reporting tools which can provide this kind of requirement?
Hello , I need create tasks, which will be wake up daily to backup 4 databases. My questions are: 1. Can I create 1 task to backup all databases using TSQL command? Ex: DUMP DATABASE test1 to test1_backup DUMP TRANSACTIONS test1 to test1_backup with truncate_only DUMP DATABASE test2 to test2_backup DUMP TRANSACTIONS test2 to test2_backup with truncate_only Etc. If it’s possible can I just print this command to ‘Command:’ text box in the ‘New task’ window without writing the TSQL command into a text file and execute it with the ISQL program through CmdExec?????? 2.If first doesn’t work: can I do the same job, but create for every backup own task and run the same TSQL command for particular database. And if I can is it possible to schedule run all 4 tasks the same time or I should put time’s interval? 3. If 1. And 2. Are false. Give me your smart advice.
I have a MSSQL Report Services Report Model set up to allow users to create their own ad hoc reports. The data source for my model is a Named Query that queries a MS SQL view that actually pulls data from a series of tables & other views. When you create a report from this model and attempt to filter the data some of the fileds will provide you with a pick list to select which values you would like to filter on and other fields do not provide you with a pick list but require you to enter the data directly that you wish to filter on. Most of the data fields that I am trying to filter on are varchar fields and like I said some will create a pick list for you to selet from and others will not. This all seemed to start after I changed my data source to a Named Query rather than having my data source as the MS SQL View directly. I did this becuase it seemed that anytime I had to make a change to the views that the data source pulled from it would mess up any existing reports that had been created and this does not happen if I use a named query. I have gone crazy trying to figure this one out so any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Is there anyway to copy a scheduled task from one server to another? I have several tasks that I have scheduled to run on one server but I would like those tasks to be copied onto another remote server. Is it possible to copy or restore part/all of msdb into a database and have it create the scheduled tasks? Is there some other way of doing this? Any insight is appreciated.
I am quite new to SSIS but managed to build a package which imports text files in to SQL. The text files are generated after users complete a manufacturing process on a machine.
The SSIS package is stored in the SSIS catalog and currently a SQL Agent tasks runs every evening to import new files that have been created during the day. Users have now requested the ability to run the import process as soon as they have finished their manufacturing runs as they may want to query the data to looks up stats etc.
What is the best way to do this considering all of the users are not SQL guys and wont have direct logins into the SQL Server or access to SQL Server Management studio. They will have access to the PC where the files are generated, so I ideally I need a batch file which they can just execute to import their new files.
I have seen lots of things on the web about running dtsexec but as the package is stored in the SSIS Catalog, how can I execute this remotely?
I am using SQL 6.5 task scheduler and all of the sudden, ANY task I schedule and/or manually run, I never see the history recorded or its status. They may or may not run, but as far as the Task Scheduler shows it did not. When I run a particular task, it gives the normal msgs, i.e. 'Do you wish to run it', and 'Task started successfully, check HISTORY upon completion' (paraphrase). Does anyone know why this is happening? It works on all my other SQL Servers. Please help. Thank you
I have a SQL 2000 script which I use to automatically schedule various backup tasks. This script adds and schedules a full backup once a week, differential backups nightly, and log backups hourly, in addition to a couple other maintenance tasks such as rebuilding indexes.
The idea is that a less technically savvy person can set a few variables at the top of the script (such as DB name and backup file folders) and click 'execute' to run the script and schedule the backups etc all in one go, for different clients.
Since some of the stored procs I use in this script are deprecated in SQL 2005, I am trying to replicate this functionality in SSIS but am having trouble figuring out how I can get all of this functionality encapsulated in the same 'click and go' manner where the user can simply execute the package and all the jobs will be scheduled without any user interaction.
Is this even possible? Where should I be looking for examples of how to do this?
I have a report where I am giving the users a parameter so that they can select which field they would like to sort on.The report is also grouping by that field. I have a gruping section, where i have added code to group on the field I want based on this parameter, however I also would like to changing the sorting order but I checked around and I did not find any info.
So here is my example. I am showing sales order info. The user can sort and group by SalesPerson or Customer. Right now, I have code on my dataset to sort by SalesPerson Code and Order No.So far the grouping workds, however the sorting does not.
We have an existing SSRS server, and have just created a new child domain. We'll be migrating users from the parent to the child, and want to add the users of that new domain with access to SSRS. In the parent domain they are able to access, but after migration with the child domain account, they cannot.
I have added the group CHILDDomain Users with a system user role on SSRS, and PARENTDomain Users was already there.
Is there any additional step I should/could take to get this active?
I have had this issue just pop up. I have local users who can connect fine, but my users that require connection by VPN cannot connect. I get the server not available or access denied error. I did confirm that the VPN'ers are connected to the network correctly and can see that their shares and mappings are correct. Any ideas? Thanking you all in advance!!
I am trying to revert back to Windows 7 after upgrading to Windows 10, however it will not let me and the following message occurs: "Remove new accounts. Before you can go back to a previous version of Windows, you'll need to remove any user accounts you added after the most recent upgrade. The accounts need to be completely removed, including their profiles. You created one account (NT SERVICEMSSQLSERVER) Go to Settings> Accounts> Other users to remove these accounts and then try again".However I did not create any new users and there are no other users listed in the Accounts section.
how can i setup an input field and SQL column to allow a user to enter something such as: '1+' into the field and the db? i get an error due to the '+'.
hi alli've got two tables called "webusers" (id, name, fk_country) and "countries" (id, name) at the meantime, i've a search-page where i can fill a form to search users. in the dropdown to select the country i included an option which is called "all countries". now the problem is: how can i make a stored procedure that makes a restriction to the fk_country depending on the submitted fk_country parameter?it should be something like SELECT * FROM webusers(if @fk_country > 0, which is the value for "all countries"){ WHERE fk_country = @fk_country} who has an idea how to solve this problem?
I created an UPDATE trigger on a table - but there one case where I would not the trigger to occur. I mean, in one procedure it may update this table and I would not the trigger to occur a update occurred because of this stored procedure. I could alter my trigger but I am not sure if I would be able to tell which procedure caused it without adding a special column, but if I have to I will.
I installed full version of SqlServer 2005. Iam able to Connect to all the systems that are in Intranet. But iam not able to Connect to the external systems (or) remote Connections. I followed all the steps that are in the following URL support.microsoft.com/kb/914277 Still iam getting the problem. Show me a way in this issue.
I have written a windows service using VB.NET that connects to a database and performs several tasks. The service is working correctly and has been fully tested against SQL Server 2000. I have recently moved to SQL Server 2005 and now, the service will not connect to the database.
I have setup and tried several different users, but none work, I get the following message:
Login failed for user 'OEESYSTEMS'
The server instance, username and password I specify are all correct.
The service is running on the same server as SQL Server. I can connect through a web application, and through ODBC. The server is set to use SQL server and windows authentication, and is setup and successfully allows remote connections.
It looks like SQL server sees that a windows service is trying to connect and does not allow it.
For the love of god, can anyone help with this issue.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10061)

I have recieved this error and i have changed the surface area configuration to allow remote connections but it still won't allow them after i start and restart the server service. is there any way to fix this i have reinstalled several times and that has not yet fixed the problem either.
I have a flat file that I'm reading from and loading my tables with. In that file I have a column that has numbers (2000,1999,1998 and so on) and the column that they are being loaded into is defined as an INT. The issue I'm running into is that the first 50 or so rows in the flat file is empty for this column so I'm getting an error message. If I put numbers in that column in the flat file it works, if i remove them it fails. How can I allow for NULL values for my INT column on the database table?
here is the error I'm getting:
[OLE DB Destination [182]] Error: There was an error with input column "SalesYear" (7259) on input "OLE DB Destination Input" (195). The column status returned was: "The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data.".

this is the error message i get and i don't know how to correct it. i have tried going into surface area configuration and setting it allow remote connections but that hasn't changed anything. i am at a loss for how to correct this situation.
My users want to be able to enter nothing in a date field.
I'm using asp.net v2, vb.net, and VS 2005 for my application. I'm not sure what to do or what code to write to allow the user not to enter a date and keep from hitting the sqldatetime overflow error.
Please forgive my post, as I am not a network tech, however I provide pc support to the city offices where I live and they are in need of help.
Physical box and pc's moved to a new location. All setup with proper cabling, etc. At first log on after the move all users to log on as normal, a day or two later, only the Administrator can log on and there is only one administrator profile.
Any duh quick fixes to check out, as this brings down 4 city offices.
I Installed full version of SqlServer 2005. Iam able to connect to all of our systems which are in intranet. But iam not able to connect to external system. I performed all the steps that are mentioned in the following URL support.microsoft.com/kb/914277 . Even then i was not able to connect to the remote systems. I request you to show me a solution to this issue.
I am trying to make a connection to sql server using sspi (windows authentication), however, I do not wish to use the built in tokenauthentication system. Administrators are worried about somebody using an unattended logged on computer to gain access to the database. So I am left with using sql server authentication (which I am not fond of doing, more password administration) or what I would like to do is use windows authentication but make the user enter thier windows password prior to logging into sql server. Is there a way? Thanks in Advance.
With MS SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager, is there a way to allow a user accessto only a few tables, but deny the user access to the rest without having togo to all of the tables and denying access? The database has roughly 50tables, but only 3 should be granted to the new user, so as you can see itwould be a painstaking task to manually do this with the *cough* mouse. Or,if I can run some sort of grant script, that would work too. Thank you!
Is there a way to automatically setup SQL Server Express to allow remote connections during the installation process?
We are deploying SQL Server Express with our application and I really can't ask SMB customers to go through a series of rather complicated steps after our "turn key" setup installs everything in order for any of the other computers in their office to connect.
What's the reasoning behind that, anyway? Why create a database server setup which by default doesn't allow anyone except the server to access it? I guess that makes sense for ASP.NET but the web fad isn't the only platform developers use these days.
Is there a way to tell an ALTER TABLE statement that truncating data from a string or binary column is okay? Meaning, if I have a NVARCHAR(50) column and I want to change it to NVARCHAR(10), any strings over 10 characters can safely be truncated to 10?
Or do I have to push the columns though an intermediary first?
