Allowing Users To Truncate Log File

Mar 30, 2007

I would like to allow a particular user to truncate a log file in a
stored procedure that the user runs every day. At this moment the only
personnel that can truncate the log file are personnel with sysadmin
rights. Is there any way to do this in sql server 2005 without
granting this user sysadmin rights (something we REALLY don't want to
do)? Thanks for all your help in advance.

Allowing Users To Choose Which File To Import

Feb 13, 2008

I'm building a package that will periodically be used to import data from an excel file to update a SQL database. I've done most of it but I am completely stuck on one bit:

How can I build something in that allows the user to browse for the Excel file to be imported (like you do when you set up the Excel Connection Manager and it asks which file)?

My ideal world would be someway of calling just that part of the Import wizard.

There are lots of things about dynamically choosing the file using variables but they don't allow end-user interaction. It may be that I'm trying to do something I shouldn't.........

Allowing Users To Edit Database

Jul 11, 2006

I'm relatively new to administering SQL Server, hence this basic question.

What are the standard practice tool(s)/methods for allowing users access to a database to edit data? In this case, these are engineers (not programmers) that need to edit some values. The practice in the past has been to install Enterprise Manager on their PC. However, this does not seem proper to me and I was thinking more along the lines of having them use Access instead.

I compare Enterpise Manager in SQL Server as an equilvalent to Enterprise Manager in Oracle - these are tools only for use by database administrators. Is this a correct correlation, or is Enterpise Manager in SQL Server a tool that users (and programmers?) are commonly allowed to use? In the case of common users, I would think not.

Thanks in advance.

Allowing SQL Users To Change Password

Hi guys,

Is there anyway to allow SQL Server users to change their own passwords without giving them rights to "db_securityadmin" ?

Our M$ adviser suggested creating our own app using SQL NS and DMO to do it.

Is there any easier method, reference, download sample from the web?

Allowing Users To Type In Characters In A Drop Down List?

Feb 6, 2007

is this even possible in reporting services? I already deployed reports for our client using Reporting Services 2000, one of their complaints was that the dropdownlist of the reports contains a very long list of data, this list cannot be shorten since all data are required. Is there a way to let the users type in characters, not only one character to find the exact data they want. The data in the drop down list are needed because these data are parameters.

Are there any web based reporting tools which can provide this kind of requirement?

Report Model Not Allowing Users To Filter Using A Pick List

Jan 9, 2008

I have a MSSQL Report Services Report Model set up to allow users to create their own ad hoc reports. The data source for my model is a Named Query that queries a MS SQL view that actually pulls data from a series of tables & other views. When you create a report from this model and attempt to filter the data some of the fileds will provide you with a pick list to select which values you would like to filter on and other fields do not provide you with a pick list but require you to enter the data directly that you wish to filter on. Most of the data fields that I am trying to filter on are varchar fields and like I said some will create a pick list for you to selet from and others will not. This all seemed to start after I changed my data source to a Named Query rather than having my data source as the MS SQL View directly. I did this becuase it seemed that anytime I had to make a change to the views that the data source pulled from it would mess up any existing reports that had been created and this does not happen if I use a named query. I have gone crazy trying to figure this one out so any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Allowing Users To Run SSIS Packages Remotely

Mar 12, 2015

I am quite new to SSIS but managed to build a package which imports text files in to SQL. The text files are generated after users complete a manufacturing process on a machine.

The SSIS package is stored in the SSIS catalog and currently a SQL Agent tasks runs every evening to import new files that have been created during the day. Users have now requested the ability to run the import process as soon as they have finished their manufacturing runs as they may want to query the data to looks up stats etc.

What is the best way to do this considering all of the users are not SQL guys and wont have direct logins into the SQL Server or access to SQL Server Management studio. They will have access to the PC where the files are generated, so I ideally I need a batch file which they can just execute to import their new files.

I have seen lots of things on the web about running dtsexec but as the package is stored in the SSIS Catalog, how can I execute this remotely?

Sorting And Grouping Question By Allowing Users To Select The Sorting Field

Feb 11, 2007

I have a report where I am giving the users a parameter so that they can select which field they would like to sort on.The report is also grouping by that field. I have a gruping section, where i have added code to group on the field I want based on this parameter, however I also would like to changing the sorting order but I checked around and I did not find any info.

So here is my example. I am showing sales order info. The user can sort and group by SalesPerson or Customer. Right now, I have code on my dataset to sort by SalesPerson Code and Order No.So far the grouping workds, however the sorting does not.

Any suggestions would help.

Truncate Log File

Aug 22, 2007

Hi,

I have a database with two log files. I need to truncate one file because it has 40GB.
I tried

Highlight the database-> Tasks->Detach..-> Click OK
Go to log file folder -> rename the testDev_log.ldf to be like testDev_log-aa.ldf,
Highlight Databases->Attach€¦-> Click Add -> add the database testDev, highlight the log file and click the €˜Remove€™ button. This means you only attach testDev.mdf
After this is done, you can verify the contents of the attached database and then delete the log file.but doesn' t work. I read that the problema could be multiple log files, so i tried remove one log file but a get the error that file is not empty.

How can i remove th log file?

SQL 2012 :: Cannot Truncate Log File Which Is Part Of Transaction Replication

Feb 9, 2015

SQL 2012 Ent SP2

Database is in simple recovery mode, and published with transaction replication push subscription, just one subscriber but the database is huge. I don't want to overwrite the schema at the subscriber either.

I had to run an alter database command on a published database, it created so many logs that an extra drive had to be added along with an extra log file to accommodate all the logs.

The problem I have is I'd like to know clear the file of logs so I can drop the temporary log file, and give the drive back, but I cannot.

I have tried dbcc shrinkfile with the emptyfile option but it never clears, I have also tried it with notruncate and truncateonly options (mainly out of desperation).

I do not need to worry about point in time restore as a full backup is taken before and after the operation. After which the database will be put back into Full recovery mode.

I have looked at log_reuse_wait_desc and the file says 'Replication', so I am now thinking the file cannot empty because replication is keeping one of the VLFs active. I tried dropping and recreating the subscription hoping it might free something up and I could get somewhere, but it made no difference.

Do I have to remove replication completely to get round this? Surely not.

I have also tried putting the database back into full recovery mode, doing a full DB backup, and a transaction log backup, but its made no difference, which is also what makes me think a portion of the log is still active because of replication, and perhaps the transactions have not gone through to the subscriber, which raises another question, why not?

I have not tried restarting SQL server, as I'd like to know a way out of this without having to do that, plus I do not think it would make any difference anyway.

Input Flat File Is - Truncate Extra Data

I am using the flat file connection manager. I read in a set of flat files and copy them into a staging database table. I want to ignore anything in the text file past column 266. I can't get this to work correctly. I can't define the last column to end at 266 and ignore the rest. I tried adding an extra column but that did not work either.

'Truncate' Command Doesn't Truncate Enough

Dec 30, 2004

With a database size of almost 2 GB, I run the 'truncate table eventlog command' which completes successfully, but the database size only decreases by about 10 MB so stays too large - indeed the number of rows in the eventlog table is minimal, but the otehr tables in this database don't show such an amount of tables large enough to cause the size issue either. What could be the reason and how can I reduce it (possibly truncating another table but then which one, how could I determine which is too large and needs truncating?).

To Truncate Or Not To Truncate: That Is The Question..

Apr 17, 2008

Hi all...

Please forgive the elementary nature of my question, but could someone please explain the differences between these two database backup types:

1. Log backup
2. Log backup no truncate

From what I understand and have read, the "no truncate" backup method keeps the entire transaction log indefinitely. Using the truncation method, the transaction log is either 1) compressed or 2) cleaned up so that any completed transactions are removed from the log. Which one of these is true?

And, for the big question: is it better to run a backup of the transaction log with truncation or not? Our current backup scheme is similar to the following:

Full backup every 24 hours
transaction log backup every hour with no truncation

Should we insert a truncation backup somewhere in here? What is the danger of removing (or compressing) parts of the transaction log? Will this affect the restore process?

Thanks in advance!

Reporting Services :: Adding (new) Child Domain Users To SSRS As System Users?

Jul 28, 2015

We have an existing SSRS server, and have just created a new child domain. We'll be migrating users from the parent to the child, and want to add the users of that new domain with access to SSRS. In the parent domain they are able to access, but after migration with the child domain account, they cannot.

I have added the group CHILDDomain Users with a system user role on SSRS, and PARENTDomain Users was already there.

Is there any additional step I should/could take to get this active?

SQL 2K5 Not Allowing Connection From Win Service

May 28, 2008

Hi All,

I have written a windows service using VB.NET that connects to a database and performs several tasks. The service is working correctly and has been fully tested against SQL Server 2000. I have recently moved to SQL Server 2005 and now, the service will not connect to the database.

I have setup and tried several different users, but none work, I get the following message:

Login failed for user 'OEESYSTEMS'

The server instance, username and password I specify are all correct.

The service is running on the same server as SQL Server. I can connect through a web application, and through ODBC. The server is set to use SQL server and windows authentication, and is setup and successfully allows remote connections.

It looks like SQL server sees that a windows service is trying to connect and does not allow it.

For the love of god, can anyone help with this issue.

Thank you.

Allowing Null Values

Aug 1, 2007

I have a flat file that I'm reading from and loading my tables with. In that file I have a column that has numbers (2000,1999,1998 and so on) and the column that they are being loaded into is defined as an INT. The issue I'm running into is that the first 50 or so rows in the flat file is empty for this column so I'm getting an error message. If I put numbers in that column in the flat file it works, if i remove them it fails. How can I allow for NULL values for my INT column on the database table?

here is the error I'm getting:

[OLE DB Destination [182]] Error: There was an error with input column "SalesYear" (7259) on input "OLE DB Destination Input" (195). The column status returned was: "The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data.".
