Alter Table Impact On Current Transactions
Nov 7, 2007
Just a quick easy question. If I alter a table (add a column to the table), will it take the table offline during the ALTER process? I am adding the column to the end of the table not in the middle. I know if I add it in the middle it will offline the table.

Goofed up and ran an update query. It messed up all the data in a single table. I'm trying not to restore the table from a previous backup since the backup is more than 20 GB. It's going to take forever to restore it. Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks!
Charles.

I have been discussing this Service Broker issues in this forum for quite sometimes and sorry to bother u all again€¦ To make things more clearer before implementing in production environment I have few doubts and it should be clarified..
As discussed in the first link we can clear sys.conversation_endpoints by just giving ALTER DATABASE GPx SET NEW_BROKER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE. But my apprehension is that if we run this command on production server and it truncate this table€¦ what will be the impact and overall overhead on the system€¦ Is it recommended to give this statement on Production Server daily at less traffic times, to clear this table ?€¦ will it have adverse effect. I repeat I have downtime , I can even shutdown this server daily€¦
I also, just want to know why Microsoft has not looked into this aspects€¦ why the system itself is clearing the expired messages.. What is the thought behind this architecture
I have the script to run in batch€¦ but in high-level meetings it is always difficult to convince this architecture/process€¦
Thanks in advance

I have a *.sql script that creates database tables, and I need to modify the database to enable the service broker. In addition, the actual name of the database is not known in advance - it is set per instance of the application.
I know I need to do:
ALTER DATABASE dbname SET ENABLE_BROKER
But I must avoid including the name of the database in the script. I did wonder if this would work:
DECLARE @DB varchar(50)
SELECT @DB = DB_NAME()
ALTER DATABASE @DB SET ENABLE_BROKER
But I just get a syntax error. Presumably this also rules out setting the database name as a parameter to the script (SqlParameter stuff)
The only option I can think of is dynamically creating the statement, either in T-SQL or in the calling .NET environment.
Any thoughts?
Ruth

Hello, everyone:
I want to add a column, INT NOT NULL DEFAULT 0, to a table. There are about 9 mil. records, 57 columns in the table. SQL 2k on Win 2003. What impact maybe bring?
1) Is there a down time on database and server?
2) Is it possible to insert records during adding new column?
3) How long will be taken roughly?
Thanks a lot.

For example, column A is unique, primary key. I want to make column B as unique, primary key.
Can I do that? What will be the impact on database performance?
Thanks

SQL Server 2000:
Question 1
If you drop / rename a table and then recreate the table with the SAME NAME, what impact does it have on stored procedures that use these tables? From a system perspective, do you have to rebuild / recompile ALL the stored procedures that use this table?
I had a discussion with someone that said that this is a good idea, since the IDs of the tables change in sysobjects and from a SQL SERVER query plan perspective, this needs to be done...
Question 2
If you Truncate a Table as part of a BEGIN TRANSACTION, what happens if an error occurs? Will it Rollback? The theory is that it won't because Truncate doesn't utilize the logs where as Delete From uses the SQL Logs?
Thanks!

Hi guys,
If I have a temporary table called #CTE
With the columns
[Account]
[Name]
[RowID Table Level]
[RowID Data Level]
and I need to change the column type for the columns:
[RowID Table Level]
[RowID Data Level]
to integer, and set the column [RowID Table Level] as Identity (index) starting from 1, incrementing 1 each time.
What will be the right syntax using SQL SERVER 2000?
I am trying to solve the question in the link below:

ALTER TABLE #CTE
MODIFY
[RowID Table Level] INT IDENTITY(1,1),
[RowID Data Level] INT;

When I execute

I get the error. "The OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "...." does not contain the table "COUNTRY". The table either does not exist or the current user does not have permissions on that table."
The 'sp' user I am connecting is the owner of the table. What could be the problem ?
Thanks a lot.

In SQL Server 2005,here are two tables, created by the following SQL Statements:
CREATE TABLE student(
ID CHAR(6) PRIMARY KEY,
NAME VARCHAR(10),
AGE INT
);
CREATE TABLE score(
ID CHAR(6) PRIMARY KEY,
SCORE INT,
FOREIGN KEY(ID) REFERENCES student(ID)
);
For the length of Column ID is not enough, So I want to alter its length. The alter statement is:
ALTER TABLE student ALTER COLUMN ID CHAR(20)
For the table student is referenced by table score, the alter statement can not alter the column of the table student, and the SQL Server DBMS give the errors.
But, I can manually alter the length of the column ID in SQL SERVER Management Studio. How to alter column length of the master table(student) along with the slave table(score)?
Thanks!

A customer wants to implement table partitioning on a replicated table.
They want to hold 13 months of data in the table and roll off the earliest/oldest month to an identical archive table. The table has a date field and partitioning by month makes sense all around.
So SWITCH PARTITION is the obvious solution to this, except for the fact that the table is replicated (transactional w/no subscriber updates).
What are his architectural or practical solutions to using table partitioning and replication?
thx

I have some problems getting my SSIS package to run in a transaction, I wonder if anyone can assist.
What I want to do is run one package, which consists of a
- 1) create staging table SQL statement
- 2) read (all) from Access MDB to staging
- 3) copy (only new) from staging table to real table
- 4) drop the staging table
I changed the package to "require" a transactions, and left all containers in it to "supported" (default, I think). I left all the transaction type to default "serializeable".
The package does not work, since the table I created on step one is not "seen" when step 2 wants to insert into it. If I set the package transaction back to "supported" (default) the package works, but an error on step 2 or 3 will not rollback changes and not remove the staging tables...
So, my question really is: How do I make step 1 results visible to step 2 in the same transaction? Or do I need to take a completly different approach for this?
Stupid question I think, but I seem to not be able to find the right way to handle this situation...
Thanks for reading!

Hi there,
I have decided to move all my transaction handling from asp.net to stored procedures in a SQL Server 2000 database. I know the database is capable of rolling back the transactions just like myTransaction.Rollback() in asp.net. But what about exceptions? In asp.net, I am used to doing the following:
<code>Try 'execute commands myTransaction.Commit()Catch ex As Exception Response.Write(ex.Message) myTransaction.Rollback()End Try</code>Will the database inform me of any exceptions (and their messages)? Do I need to put anything explicit in my stored procedure other than rollback transaction?
Any help is greatly appreciated

Hi,
is it possible to override the system when adjusting
columns. i.e. a system override setting.
For instance if I've got a column that is indexed and I
want to adjust it from varchar(50) to varchar(51) it lets
me. But if I then try and adjust the column to varchar
(49) I get the error below:
Server: Msg 5074, Level 16, State 8, Line 1
The index 'LastName' is dependent on column 'lastname'.
Server: Msg 4922, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
ALTER TABLE ALTER COLUMN lastname failed because one or
more objects access this column.
I asked this question on another Forum and was told I had to drop the index first. Just thought I'd ask for a second opinion.
Thanks for the help.

I know how to add a field in a table via Enterprise manager and I know also via ALTER TABLE command.

So, this is possible via Enterprise Manager but with the ALTER TABLE command? How can I add a field without put it in the last position?

fetch next from c into @name
end
close c
deallocate c

Incorrect syntax near '@name'.
reffering to the alter table statement
So, my question is, how can i actually perform the alter table in this case?
