AlwaysOn Connection With Primary Node Using Its Host Name

Feb 26, 2015

I have set up a 2 node availability group to take advantage of using the secondary node for a read-only replica. I actually am having two issues. The first being I can connect to the primary node using the listener dns name and ip address, but no longer can connect via its actual host name or ip address. I can ping the address with no problem, but I can't connect to port 1433 using the actual host name or ip address.

I am no problem connecting to the secondary node using its host name, but can not get to it through the listener using the applicationintent=readonly. Eventually I would like for everything to connect through the listener name, but for now still need to connect via the server's host name and don't understand why; everything I read is that the primary node should be able to be connected via both the host name and the listener name.

SQL 2012 :: Log Shipping - Reboot Secondary Node And Then Primary Node

Apr 20, 2015

I have not used log shipping before and find myself in a position where I need to reboot the secondary node and then the primary node and I don't actually need to failover.

Is there anything I need to be aware of. When rebooting the secondary node I assume the transactions will be held in the primary nodes log till the secondary comes back and just carry on once back up?

When rebooting the primary node nothing needs to be done and the log shipping will just start again once it has come back?

3 Node 2014 AlwaysOn - Automatic Failover?

Jun 30, 2015

I have a 3 node 2014 AlwaysOn setup. The primary and secondary are set for automatic failover. The third node, of course, is manual (until 2016). The 2 nodes with are automatic are sitting in one datacenter, the third is in another. If the first datacenter was to go down, I would manually have to failover to the third node? What's the normal process here for having two datacenters and ensuring the availability group is always available?

SQL 2012 :: Using VMotion To Migrate AlwaysOn Node

Nov 4, 2015

Our network guys have to carry out an IBM Flex Chassis move at our data centre, which will affect the primary replica of one of our SQL 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Group nodes (the secondary replica won't be affected).

They have suggested using vMotion to migrate the primary replica to another virtual host, which will result in a very brief period of network outage for the node.

I've done some reading and have seen a few potential issues regarding Stun During Page Send (SDPS) and increasing thresholds within WSFC. Unfortunately, we're not able to test this prior to the migration, so I have a few questions...

Would it be necessary to failover to the secondary replica node before performing the vMotion (and back again afterwards)?

SQL 2012 :: AlwaysOn Availability Group Listener DNS Resolving To DR Node

Jan 19, 2015

We are rolling out the use of Availability Group listeners to our SQL Server 2012 Environment which has a 2 node multi-subnet cluster. The Primary is R/W and the Secondary is a non-readable node that would be manually failed over to in a DR scenario

I have set up the AGL and asked the sysadmins to create a DNS record in both subnets with fixed IP's.

The issue I have having is that when I ask the app developers to connect to the databases using the AGL it is totally random whether the AGL resolves to the Primary or DR node - as a result that are having problems getting their apps to connect.

I was thinking of asking the sys admins to remove the DNS record in the DR subnet and then add it back in should we need to fail over - but I was thinking there must be a better way.

Recovery :: Windows 2008 R2 AlwaysOn Cluster - Migrate DR Node

Oct 8, 2015

I have a Windows 2008 R2 Always on Cluster with 3 nodes (two in the primary site and one in the DR site).

Primary Site:
     -Primary Site Server1
     -Primary Site Server2

DR Site 1 (to be decommed):
     -DR Site Server1

Our company is planning on decommissioning the DR site.  But before we do this, we want to add a 4th site to the cluster.  Migrate the data...and then decommission the original DR Site.

Is it possible to have this configuration:

Primary Site:
     -Primary Site Server1
     -Primary Site Server2

DR Site 1 (to be decommed):
     -DR Site Server1

DR Site 2 (NEW DR Site):
     -DR Site Server1

IF this is possible, do I simply add the new DR site to the existing cluster (same steps as adding the first DR node to the cluster when the cluster was originally configured?  or are there special steps?

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Handling AlwaysOn Failover And Failback To Preferred Node?

Aug 25, 2015

I am running SQL 2014 2-node AlwaysON Availability groups, Enterprise Edition in our environment and 5 databases are part of AG.

Question is, sometimes AG is getting failed over to node2 but always our preferred node is node1 due to some business needs otherwise some of our jobs will fail.

So, what I looking for is, a sql script which can handle a situation wherein, for some reason, AG is failed over to node2, it should be able to detect if node1 is back online or not and if so, it should fail back to node1. How to do this using tsql query or stored proc or sql agent job ?

Cluster network 'Public' is partitioned. Some attached failover cluster nodes cannot communicate with each other over the network. The failover cluster was not able to determine the location of the failure. Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your network configuration. If the condition persists, check for hardware or software errors related to the network adapter. Also check for failures in any other network components to which the node is connected such as hubs, switches, or bridges.

SQL 2012 :: VLFs On AlwaysOn Primary Replica After Log Backup From Secondary

Aug 6, 2014

I was working on a job to send me info each morning about database file free space and was noticing some odd things when looking at the log file VLFs for one of my databases in an AlwaysOn availability group. When I run DBCC LOGINFO on the secondary replica for this database, I get what I expect and most VLFs have a status of 0 (indicating the VLFs are reusable or unused). When I run DBCC LOGINFO on the primary replica, all of the VLFs have a status of 2 (active or recoverable).

Since log backups on the secondary replica in AlwaysOn still truncate the log in the primary replica, I would expect that the VLFs in the primary replica would also be mostly in a reusable or unused state. My log file sizes are the same size on each server and my backups are completing successfully. what might be causing the VLFs on the primary replica to have a status of 2 in DBCC LOGINFO when taking log backups from the secondary replica?

Recovery :: Restoring AlwaysOn AG (Primary) Server After Reboot Automatically (failback)

May 29, 2015

We have several Sql Server 2014 AlwaysOn Availability Groups set up in our test lab and use a combination of SCDPM and Maintenance Plans to back up the databases in them.

Our applications always work well regardless of which of the physical servers are, at any given time, designated the "Primary" for a database.  Automatic failover works fine.

There are other applications, such as SQL Server built-in backup and System Center DPM that only work properly when the databases are currently hosted where originally intended.

During the normal course of Windows Updates, etc., machines will occasionally be rebooted in the middle of the night.  When they come back up, we would like them to "reclaim" the databases that properly belong to them, in an orderly fashion of course (when the "Synchronization State = Sychronized").  We have lots of these test servers and we do not have staff watching the servers in the middle of the night.

Is there an automatic way to accomplish this?

1.Open a conection to access table and then close the connection;
2.restart sql server service ;
3.Re-open a connection to access table and then an exception was thrown out:
A transport-level error has occurred when sending the request to the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed bythe remote host.)
4. try re-open a connection to access table and then no exception was thrown out.
I think this maybe related with connection pool. any guy know the detail, please give me a response. Thank you very much!

EM Error 'connection Forcibly Closed By The Remote Host' (ouch)

Jul 22, 2005

I am getting this error in Enterprise Manager:
TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

But, my web app can still connect just fine to the db, so it's still in
the same place with the same login/password.  And my registration
in EM was working just fine (for years) until yesterday I got this
error.  I've tried deleting the registration and re-creating it
but the same thing.  What could have gone wrong to cause this to
happen?

Thanks for any pointers, I have no idea where to start looking on this one, the host says they haven't changed anything...

ODBC Connection Fails From Cluster Node

May 22, 2007

I had a stand alone sql server that I upgraded to a cluster. I have an odbc connection called my_connection. The odbc test works fine. When I call the dsn from a php script it fails with this message:

Warning: odbc_connect(): SQL error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB
]SQL Server does not exist or access denied., SQL state 08001 in SQLConnect in D

Could not connect to my_connection!

This same script works fine from any other computer. Is there an issue with connecting to a virtual server from the node via ODBC? Is there something I need to change in the client protocols?

Thanks in advance.

Framework 2.0 Changes - TCP Provider, Error: 0 - An Existing Connection Was Forcibly Closed By The Remote Host.

Nov 14, 2005

If you connect to a server and open a query in SQL Managment studio (2005) and looses connection and then regain the connection, when you try to run the query it gives me a "TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host."   This happens against both 2005 and 2000 servers.   If I re-run the query it works.   However, this happens in our VB.NET app as well for clients with Wireless connections.   So, something has changed in Framework 2.0 regarding this, does anyone know how to tell the client to not throw this error and just try connecting the server instead which will work?

Recovery :: FCI / AlwaysOn - Connection Remapping In Case Of Failure?

Jul 20, 2015

SQL 2012. I am working in understanding more the feature <AlwaysOn>. I have already worked with FCI (Failover Cluster Instance) and I would like to understand more about <AlwaysOn>.

Browsing internet/documentation I am getting more knowledge about <AlwaysOn> but a doubt persists:

1) Combination of FCI + AlwaysOn (2 SQL servers for FCI providing cluster instance: SQLClusterSQLReporting + 1 SQL server (at least) for <AlwaysOn>: SQLAOn/SQLReporting)

If the FCI instance is called SQLClusterSQLReporting, all the connections are mapped to this name.

But if the<AlwaysOn> feature is added to the system, in case of failure the name of <SQL Instance AlwaysOn> must be used therefore I am obliged to re-map all my connections to  SQLAOn/SQLReporting.

QUESTION: IS it correct?

If yes, I do not understand the usefulness for the <AlwaysON> feature that lead to re-map all the connection.

In my opinion it should be a <MAIN> SQL Instance covering both <FCI> + <AlwaysOn>.

SQL 2012 :: Running 2 Distinct AGs On Each Node Of A Two Node Cluster?

Oct 23, 2014

I'm contemplating running two availability groups on a two node WSFC. The WSFC is setup with a file share witness (i.e. no shared storage). Can I safely run 1 AG on one primary node, and the other AG on the other node (as primary). Each AG would have replicas on the passive node. This would effectively allow both servers to be in use at the same time. In a failover event, I understand that both workloads would transfer to a single server - so the box needs to be sized appropriately.
