Ambiguous Column Names In Multi-Table Join

Jun 21, 2006

Hi all,

A (possibly dumb) question, but I've had no luck finding a definitive
answer to it. Suppose I have two tables, Employees and Employers, which
both have a column named "Id":

Employees
-Id
-FirstName
-LastName
-SSN
etc.

Employers
-Id
-Name
-Address
etc.

and now I perform the following join:

SELECT Employees.*, Employers.*
FROM Employees LEFT JOIN Employers ON (Employees.Id=Employers.Id)

The result-set will contain two "Id" columns, so SQL Server will
disambiguate them; one column will still be called "Id", while the
other will be called "Id1." My question is, how are you supposed to
know which "Id" column belongs to which table? My intuition tells me,
and limited testing seems to indicate, that it depends on the order in
which the table names show up in the query, so that in the above
example, "Id" would refer to Employees.Id, while "Id1" would refer to
Employers.Id. Is this order guaranteed?

Also, why does SQL Server use such a IMO brain-damaged technique to
handle column name conflicts? In MS Access, it's much more
straightforward; after executing the above query, you can use
"Employees.Id" and "Employers.Id" (and more generally,
"TableNameOrTableAlias.ColumnName") to refer to the specific "Id"
column you want, instead of "Id" and "Id1" -- the
"just-tack-on-a-number" strategy is slightly annoying when dealing with
complex queries.

Transact SQL :: Difference Between Inner Join And Left Outer Join In Multi-table Joins?

Oct 8, 2015

I was writing a query using both left outer join and inner join.  And the query was ....

SELECT
        S.companyname AS supplier, S.country,P.productid, P.productname, P.unitprice,C.categoryname
FROM
Production.Suppliers AS S LEFT OUTER JOIN
        (Production.Products AS P
         INNER JOIN Production.Categories AS C

[code]....

However ,the result that i got was correct. But when i did  the same query using the left outer join in both the cases

i.e..

SELECT
        S.companyname AS supplier, S.country,P.productid, P.productname, P.unitprice,C.categoryname
FROM
Production.Suppliers AS S LEFT OUTER JOIN
(Production.Products AS P
LEFT OUTER JOIN Production.Categories AS C
ON C.categoryid = P.categoryid)
ON
S.supplierid = P.supplierid
WHERE
S.country = N'Japan';

The result i got was same,i.e

supplier     country    productid    productname     unitprice    categorynameSupplier QOVFD     Japan     9     Product AOZBW    97.00     Meat/PoultrySupplier QOVFD    Japan   10     Product YHXGE     31.00     SeafoodSupplier QOVFD     Japan   74     Product BKAZJ    10.00     ProduceSupplier QWUSF     Japan    13     Product POXFU     6.00     SeafoodSupplier QWUSF     Japan     14     Product PWCJB     23.25     ProduceSupplier QWUSF    Japan     15    Product KSZOI     15.50    CondimentsSupplier XYZ     Japan     NULL     NULL     NULL     NULLSupplier XYZ     Japan     NULL     NULL     NULL     NULL

and this time also i got the same result. My question is that is there any specific reason to use inner join when join the third table and not the left outer join.

Multi-table JOIN Query With More Than One JOIN Statement

Apr 14, 2015

I'm having trouble with a multi-table JOIN statement with more than one JOIN statement.

For each order, I need to return the following: CarsID, CarModelName, MakeID, OrderDate, ProductName, Total ordered the Car Category.

The carid (primary key) and carmodelname belong to the Cars table.
The makeid and orderdate belong to the OrderDetails table.
The productname and carcategory belong to the Product table.

The number of rows returned should be the same as the number of rows in OrderDetails.

SQL2K SP4 Gives Error 1706 Creating Multi-statement Table-valued Function Names Beginning With Sys?

Nov 2, 2006

Hi all,

I've created a number of tables, views, sproc, and functions whose names begin with "sys_", but when I tried to create a multi-statement table-valued function with this type of name, I got:

Server: Msg 1706, Level 16, State 2, Procedure sys_tmp, Line 9

I had a quick look in this forum for 1706 (and on Google) but couldn't find anything. Does anyone know for certain if this is a bug in SQL2K?

Thanks, Jos

Here's a test script:

Join Table Key To Multiple Table Names

Nov 5, 2004

Hi there. I haven't been able to figure out how to join a table on column on multiple table names. Here's the situation:

I have a table "tblJob" with a key of jobID. Now for every jobID, the program creates a new table that keeps track of the stock before the jobId was processed and after it was processed to give accurate stock levels and show the difference in stock levels. So, a jobID of 355 would be related to the table: "tblPreStock_335" and "tblPostStock_335". These 2 tables have all the materials in stock and the quantity. Therefore they show how much material was used. I need to figure out the difference in the material in the stock before and after the processing.

That means that I have to get a stockID, get the associated pre and post tables, and then display the difference of ALL the materials in the pre and post tables.

Could someone help me get started on the right path? Even a link to similiar problem that I haven't found would be nice.

Thx

Exclude Records From A Table Where ID Column Is Same But Mail Code Column Is Multi-valued

Nov 12, 2012

I am trying to exclude records from a table where the ID column is the same but the Mail code Column is multi-valued.For Example: (the table looks like....)

ID Mail_code
111111 XNT
111111 N11
111111 XNC
222222 XNC
222222 XNL
333333 XNC

So, if there is any ID that has a value of XNC, I want to exclude the ID all together from my output regardless of the other values.

Ambiguous Column Name Error

Nov 16, 2006

Hi,

I am getting an ambiguous column name error, but I am aliasing the column in question. The problem seems to be that I'm trying to use the same column in 2 inner joins:

select trackprice.id from trackprice tp
inner join track tr on tp.trackid = tr.id
inner join trackstorage ts on ts.trackid = tr.id
inner join ... etc ....

.... gives me the error 'ambiguous column name trackid' - can this not be done with inner joins this way?

Thanks,
Alex

I have a query that is exhibiting a strange behaviour on different databases.

I've got something like this ...

select a.col, ...
from tab1 as a inner join ...
union
select a.col, ...
from tab1 as a inner join ...
order by col

I know how to fix the problem, I make the last line read "order by a.col" ... that is understood.

However, on some databases I get an error and on others I don't. All databases are on the same server instance which is sql server 2005 developer (developer version isn't relevant as it happens on customer machines too).

I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas why it is 'random'. It's as though the statement is being compiled differently on different databases ... what is influencing that ?

I'm fishing for a way to create a workaround, so if anyone has any ideas it might push me down the road of understanding why.

The real code is way too big to include here and it's not really relevant.

As a clue to what I'm looking for, if I copy the database to another database using SSIS, the resultant database doesn't cause the error despite being logically the same.

Presumably it is some physical or security difference that is causing the error to occur.

Thanks if you have any ideas,

Richard.

Get Column Names From Table

Nov 15, 2005

Hi All,

I was wondering how would I get the column names from a table? Not the results just a listing of column names. What is the command to get this information? I am using MS Access, but I posted here because MS SQL is the closest thing on this forum and the syntax is usually similar.

Thanks a bunch.

Help With Multi Join Or Multi Tier Select.

Jul 20, 2005

Hello,I am trying to construct a query across 5 tables but primarily 3tables. Plan, Provider, ProviderLocation are the three primary tablesthe other tables are lookup tables for values the other tables.PlanID is the primary in Plan andPlanProviderProviderLocationLookups---------------------------------------------PlanIDProviderIDProviderIDLookupTypePlanNamePlanIDProviderStatusLookupKeyRegionIDLastName...LookupValue....FirstName...Given a PlanID I want all the Providers with a ProviderStatus = 0I can get the query to work just fine if there are records but what Iwant is if there are no records then I at least want one record withthe Plan information. Here is a sample of the Query:SELECT pln.PlanName, pln.PlanID, l3.LookupValue as Region,p.ProviderID, p.SSNEIN, pl.DisplayLocationOnPCP,pl.NoDisplayDate, pl.ProviderStatus, pl.InvalidDate,l1.LookupValue as ReasonMain, l2.LookupValue as ReasonSub,pl.InvalidDataFROM Plans plnINNER JOIN Lookups l3 ON l3.LookupType = 'REGN'AND pln.RegionID = l3.Lookupkeyleft outer JOIN Provider p ON pln.PlanID = p.PlanIDleft outer JOIN ProviderLocation pl ON p.ProviderID = pl.ProviderIDleft outer JOIN Lookups l1 ON l1.LookupType = 'PLRM'AND pl.ReasonMain = l1.LookupKeyleft outer JOIN Lookups l2 ON l2.LookupType = 'PLX1'AND pl.ReasonSub = l2.LookupkeyWHERE pln.PlanID = '123456789' AND pl.ProviderStatus = 0ORDER BY p.PlanID, p.ProviderID, pl.SiteLocationNumI know the problew the ProviderStatus on the Where clause is keepingany records from being returned but I'm not good enough at this toanother select. Can anybody give me some suggestions?ThanksDavid

Prepending Column Names By Table

Oct 4, 2006

I wasn't sure whether or not to post this in the .NET or MsSQL forum, mods please move accordingly.

Say I have two tables: Store, and Area that have the following columns:
Area:
AreaID, AreaName, Description

Store:
StoreID, AreaID, StoreName, Description

When I run the following query :
SELECT * FROM Area, Store WHERE Area.AreaID = Store.AreaID, the following columns come back from the .NET SQLDataReader

AreaID, AreaName, Description, StoreID, AreaID, StoreName, Description

Even though the Description fields are different there is no differentiation between which one is which (other than an integer index)

Is there a way to form the SQL query so the columns come back
Area.AreaID, Area.AreaName, Area.Description etc...

I was hoping to do something like the following
Select Area.* as 'Area.'.* ...

but that wasn't liked by the SQL server, any ideas?

Note: The actual tables are more complex than this, and the table names aren't static. Individually aliasing columns won't work, nor will checking the alias.

How To Get Column Names Against Each Record In A Table

May 18, 2012

I have a table with almost 100 columns. Ex:

ID ColA ColB ColC
2 Null Word Excel
3 Access Paint Null

Expected result set is :

ID ColA ColB ColC ColumnNames IsEmpty

2 Null Word
Excel ColA
Yes

2 Null Word
Excel ColB
No

2 Null Word
Excel ColC
No
3 Access Paint Null ColA

I would like to list all the column names against each record of the table and and would like to keep track whether the column is empty or nonempty. How can I write SQL query for this?
