Stuck With An Attempt To Attach An Auto-named Database...

Aug 13, 2007

The last time I saved my Visual C# project, everything was functionning perfectly. Now, when I open my project, I have this warning on every one of my inherited forms. When I run the project, everything works fine. I've looked around for similar problems, but never found the solution that truly fits for me. Any suggestions?

An Attempt To Attach An Auto-named Database For File......

Nov 14, 2006

I've read through all the posts in this fourm that are related to the problem I'm getting with this error message on my main form, but none of the fixes seen to solve the problem. So I hope someone can get me pointed in the right direction.

I'm running visual studio 2005 professional, and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and this is a desktop application. I added the db file to the solution with the Add New Data Source wizard, I can create the datasets and preview the data correctly.

An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEdbInventory.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

When I run the program the exception is throw in the Settings.Designer.vb code, Public ReadOnly Property for the connection string. The InnerException is this...

{"An error occurred loading a configuration file: Could not find a part of the path 'C:Documents and Settings<UserName><ApplicationName>.vshos_StrongName_1sdf1e34hkn1hqmkn2bgjjwstusfj2sg1.0.0.0user.config'. (C:Documents and Settings<UserName>Application Data...<ApplicationName>.vshos_StrongName_1sdf1e34hkn1hqmkn2bgjjwstusfj2sg1.0.0.0user.config)"}

This folder doesn't exist anywhere on the system, any ideas....

TIA,

Error An Attempt To Attach An Auto-named Database For File

Aug 1, 2006

Hi,

I've just created my first projects using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL 2005 Express. This is the basic;

One windows service is created that updates a database. The windows service running under "Local system" account
One windows application where a user can see data (and change) from the database
A common business and dataaccess layer/project is used by both applications
Connection string to the database: "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|DataDatabase.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=60;User Instance=True"

Both application is located in the same directory. When the computer starts the windows service starts and works perfectly. But when a user starts the windows applications the following error is reported "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file..A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share".

It look likes that only one of my application can connect to the database at a time!

Is it possible to use separate applications to connect to the same database file?

/Robert

Error An Attempt To Attach An Auto-named Database For File

Jan 17, 2007

Hello,

I have seen some solutions of which I tried on this form for the error I am receiving, but I still cannot get the issue resolved.

Here is my case:

I developed an app using SQL Express as the local data source. I published it to my server using the Once Click install feature. When I look in my project viewer, under settings, My db connection strings are listed as follows: Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|TAP_Master.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True

From another computer, I navigate to the publish site, install and run the application with no problems. I have on another computer, the same app with an updated version number that I wish to publish, however the difference is is that this published version does not include the database as I do not want the end user to overwrite any existing data that they may have from the previous version.

I publish the updated version, install it but when the app runs, I receive the message, "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file".

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

An Attempt To Attach An Auto-named Database For File...failed. A Database With The Same Name Exists, Or Specified File Cannot Be

Mar 24, 2006

I know allot of folks are having this problem and I tried lots of things but nothing works. I understand the problem is coping the SQL Express on another server is the problem - I just not sure what to do?

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.42; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.42

This is the last statement on the Stack Trace:

SqlException (0x80131904): An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file e:wwwdata81d0493fwwwApp_DataTestDatabase.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.]
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection) +735091

I checked my server forum and they said I had to name a database:
Example: Database=(unique name);

But this didn't work either.

I just tried a simple web project that has only one database and one table in SQL Express with one sqldatasource and one datagrid. It works fine on my pc but when I use the copy function in Visio Studio 2005 Pro - I can't run the site on the remote server: www.myjewelrydirect.com

I tried coping the database manually. I tried disconnecting the database before I copy it. Below is my connection statement:

<connectionStrings>
<add name="TestDB" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|TestDatabase.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
</connectionStrings>

With all the comments in these forums - this must be a bug.

I have been working on this problem for over 2 weeks - HELP!

An Attempt To Attach An Auto-named Database For File (file Location).../Database.mdf Failed. A Database With The Same Name Exists, Or Specified File Cannot Be Opened, Or It Is Located On UNC Share.

Sep 2, 2007

Greetings, I have just arrived back into the country (NZ) and back into ASP.NET.
 I am having trouble with the following:An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file (file location).../Database.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
It has only begun since i decided i wanted to use IIS, I realise VWD comes with its own localhost, but since it is only temporary, i wanted a permanent shortcut on my desktop to link to my intranet page.
 Anyone have any ideas why i am getting the above error? have searched many places on the internet and not getting any closer.
Cheers ~ J

RESOLVED RESOLVED An Attempt To Attach An Auto-named Database For File &&<file String&&> Failed &&>&&>&&> But ONLY After SSE Reinstall

Sep 16, 2007

RESOLVED RESOLVED RESOLVED

DOH! When I rebuilt the OS, I changed the data partition ID's, and didn't remember to change them in the connetion strings

Not great, but better than continuing to bang head against wall.

Would like to say to MS appreciators that the VS2005 reinstall actually went quite well, considering.

===========================================================================

I built an app, works fine. Had the development environment working fine (VS2005 (SP0) and SQL Server Express). It had been stable for months, no problem.

Then I had to reinstall XP Pro...(finally threw too many conflicting programs into it, I guess...)

I managed to get VS2005 reinstalled ok. However, when I opened and compiled my existing app in VS2005, using Cassini, I got the dreaded error:

An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file <file string> failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

I also get this error for the compiled copy of the app on the same machine, running on IIS. (Where it also previously worked fine).

The Connection strings are all of the form

connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=(specific file string).MDF;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

I appreciate that there are zillions of posts on this issue. I'm hoping that someone might know why this should happen in this particular case.

The thing that's different about this case is that the app was working fine; I have the app deployed on a demo machine and also on a remote server as well as on the development machine.

The only thing that changed is that there was this fresh install of SQL Server Express.

I tried using >> sp_configure user instances enabled','1';RECONFIGURE <<< in SSMSEE, which took, but didn't help.

So something is different in SSE. Since the app is stable everywhere else, I REALLY don't want to go through and adjust the connection strings...MUCH better to figure out what SSE needs to be happy with the existing connection strings...as it was before.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

EDIT----TRIED SOME THINGS:

Changed folder and file permissions to allow ASPNET full access to the .mdf's and log files (though never had to do this before on the development machine.) No change...

Can see the table contents within the .mdf through SSMSE, and also through Server Explorer in VS2005.

So because the problem happens with both IIS and Cassini, I'm assuming it's got to be an issue between ASPNET and SSE.

EDIT --- TRIED SOME MORE THINGS:

I dimly remember that when I had this problem before, it was that the error message was too "dumb". It wasn't my file that had the permissions problems, it was that the SSE System Databases had to have permissions with respect to ASPNET.

I tried to set that up but I'm a complete newb on this area, so I don't know if I did it right. In SSMSE I created a Login for MyComputer/ASPNET, and gave it all permissions and roles, and then made it an owner for the four system databases...but no joy.

Any pointers on this last piece would be helpful.

EDIT - MORE INFO

The error details

[SqlException (0x80131904): An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file <filestring>.MDF failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.]

BIDS Noob Requesting Help With Error Attaching Auto-named Database

Apr 25, 2008

Greetings, helpful people of the Internet.

I'm learning to use BIDS, and have been going through the exercise in Chapter 19 of the book Professional SQL Server 2005 Integration Services. I'm probably in over my head with this since I've never used any SQL services/software before, but the company I'm interning at wants to build a workflow using SSIS, and for some reason unbeknownst to me, I volunteered to train myself for the task. I'm at a part in the book exercise where I'm editing one of the components of a Data Flow task - an OLE DB Destination. When I try to select the table/view in the editor for this, it gives me the following error:

€œAn attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsgroseMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005ProjectsCase Study ExerciseCase Study ExerciseCase Study.database failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.€?

When I googled this, most people seemed to be getting it through other SQL software, so I'm not sure if the error has the same cause or not. I know that the file in the above error message already exists, but I don't understand why the task editor won't just let me select a database that already exists so I can complete the component. Can anyone explain this to me?

Stuck Between Failed To Generate User Instance And An Attempt To Attach...failed

Sep 29, 2005

I wrote an application using Visual Studio 2005 beta 2 which uses a SQL Express .mdf file, included in the project, for the database.  After installing Visual Studio 2005 RC and the SQL Express that comes with it (I followed all of the uninstall instructions first) I can no longer add a SQL Express database to any of my projects, nor can I open the SQL Express database in my original project.  When I try either of these tasks, I get the "Failed to generate user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance.  The connection will be closed."  I read the thread which dealt with this error, and changed the connection string for the database file that had worked before to User Instance = false.  The moment I click Test Connection or OK, I get the error: "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:<path to project>EngSQL.mdf failed.  A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share." (<path to project> is actually a full path, I didn't want to type the whole thing out. :) ).  A search for this error turns up a solution of setting User Instance = false, which puts me in a catch 22 position.

How To Update Data In The Database, My Attempt Was Unsuccessful.

I was hoping I could get this to work, so far I can access all the data from the database, but I also want to update it. I placed a button, updateBttn_Click event to update the database.It's not updating though and I am not gettting any errors. I have a medical records system, SoapWare v4.90, that uses MSDE (SQL2000) databases. Due to the 2gb limitation, I am trying to migrate over to SQL 2005 (Standard or Express) which I have heard works fine. The SoapWare has a datamanager that allows me to log in to the MSDE instance, detach the SoapWare databases from msde (as well as do backups, etc) which I can confirm are detached.

Then I log back into a SQL2005 database instance using the datamanager and try to attach the database. This is what their pictured instructions demonstrate. However, I get the following error:

Database 'sw_charts' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and rerun recovery.

Of course, some of the entries will be read only, since doctors have to sign off the charts and are not allowed to subsequently change them.  But I should still be able to switch over to sql 2005?!?!?!?

Or... is there a way to attach the databases to SQLExpress manually?

Help pls?

I cann't really find the statement for attaching aspnetdb.mdf. I don't where to find it. Is there any other web.config file in the C drive? Thanks for help!

Can't Attach Database

Dec 16, 2007

I've created a database inside my ASP.net project, the database is in the App_Data folder as exepcted.I can't run the aspnet_regsql until I have attached it using SQL Server Management Studio, but when I try to attach the database it doesn't let me navigate through my folders properly. The database is in C:UsersWardieDocumentsFirstProjectApp_Data but SQL SMS only lets me navigate to the folder C:UsersWardie and no further for some reason, meaning I can't attach the database and can't use the aspnet_regsql service to create the membership tables.Does anyone know how to fix this?

Attach A Database Without LDF

Jan 31, 2007

I want to attach a database that one of the developers had detach it. The LDF file was deleted after detach.

I tried to attach and rebuild the log file in SQL2005 using the following:

USE [master]
GO
CREATE DATABASE [Test] ON
(FILENAME = N'G:MSSQLDataTest.mdf')
FOR ATTACH_REBUILD_LOG
GO

I get the following error:

File activation failure. The physical file name "D:MSSQLDATATest_log.LDF" may be incorrect.
The log cannot be rebuilt because the database was not cleanly shut down.
Msg 1813, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Could not open new database 'Test'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted.

What should I do?

Thanks,

Canada DBA

Can't Attach To Database

Jan 23, 2007

Hi,

I have a database that I developed using both Toad for SQL and SQL Server Managment Studio.

All was working fine. I could connect to the database with one of the above and also run two an applications I developed (one in C# and One in VB.NET using VS Express) using the standard SQLConnection class.

the following connection string worked fine...

Server="(local)"; Trusted_Connection="yes"; Database="CDEvolution";

Now, for one reason or another I decided to create a new data source in my Visual Studio project and pointed it to the database fine.

At first it seemed ok as I could see all tables from teh database. However somethign strage has happened. I now can't access the database in TOAD or SQL Server Managment Studio. I also couldn't connect using the above string.

I finally managed to get the two appllications I developed to access database using the following connection string...

Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataCDEvolution.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=6000;User Instance=True;

and the applications work fine, however I can access the database using the DB tools.

In SQL Server Managment Studio I remove the database and tried to attach it again but I keep getting the following error message...Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 5, object ID 1, index ID 1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes.
Could not open new database 'C:PROGRAM FILESMICROSOFT SQL SERVERMSSQLDATACDEVOLUTION.MDF'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

Any ideas on how I can get access back?

Cheers in advance,

Kevin

Database Will Not Attach.

Jun 29, 2006

Hi,

We are trying to attach a Database from SQL7 to SQL2K SP3.

On SQL7

The Database was detached and the MDF copied to the New Server.

On SQL2K

We used the attach Db (in Enterprise Manager).

We get a red 'x' as normal against the logfile and noramlly it would create a new one when u proceed, but this time we are getting an error after the dialogue box asking to create a new one:

Error 1813: Could not open new database 'dbname'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted.

Device activation error. The physical file name 'd:mssql7datadbname.ldf' maybe incorrect.

The path is where the logfile resided on the old server.

Regards

John.
