An Optimum Query..?
Apr 3, 2008
Hello friends,
I have one simple question. I have two tables. 1 ( Table A ) has about
2.5 million rows and second one ( Table B ) has about 1 million. There
are common ID fields in both tables. I want join them on ID field and
get all rows of Table A which are not in there Table B.
When I ran following two queries, I got same result set, but time it
took was very different.
Following query took 1:35 minutes
SELECT Tbl1.UID, Tbl1.[LAST NAME], Tbl1.[FIRST NAME], Tbl1.[HOUSE
NUMBER], Tbl1.ADDRESS, Tbl1.CITY, Tbl1.STATE
FROM [Table A] Tbl1
WHERE NOT exists (
SELECT 1 from [Table B] Tbl2 WHERE
Tbl1.UID = Tbl2.UID )
vs this one took .45 seconds.
SELECT Tbl1.UID, Tbl1.[LAST NAME], Tbl1.[FIRST NAME], Tbl1.[HOUSE
NUMBER], Tbl1.ADDRESS, Tbl1.CITY, Tbl1.STATE
FROM [Table A] Tbl1 LEFT OUTER JOIN [Table B] Tbl2 WHERE ON Tbl1.UID =
Tbl2.UID
WHERE Tbl2.UID IS NULL
Which option is better ? I have subsequent joins to another table
which has about 2 mil more rows and trying to optimize the response
time.
I appreciate all help from the community.

Running SQL 2012 SP2
I've got this query that runs in 30 seconds and returns about 24000. The table variable returns about 145 rows (no performance issue here), and the TransactionTbl table has 14.2 Million rows, a compound, clustered primary key, and 6 non-clustered indexes, none of which meet the needs of the query.
declare @CltID varchar(15) = '12345'
declare @TranDate datetime = '2015-07-25'
declare @Ballance table
(Ledger_Code varchar(4),
AssetID varchar(32),
CurrencyID varchar(3) )
[Code] ....
Actual execution plan shows SQL is doing an index seek, then a nested loop join, and then fetching the remaining data from the TransactionTbl using a Key Lookup.
I designed a new indexes based on the query, which when I force it's usage via an index hint, reduces the run time to sub-second, but without the index hint the SQL optimiser won't use the new index, which looks like this:
CREATE INDEX IX_Test on GLSchemB.TransactionTbl (CltID, Date) include (Ledger_Code, Amount, CurrencyID, AssetID)and I tried this:
CREATE INDEX IX_Test on GLSchemB.TransactionTbl (CltID, Date, Ledger_Code, CurrencyID, AssetID) include (Amount)and even a full covering index!
I did some testing, including disabling all indexes but the PK, and the optimiser tells me I've got a missing index and recommends I create one EXACTLY like the one I designed, but when I put my one back it doesn't use it.
I though this may be due to fragmentation and/or stats being out of date, so I rebuilt the PK and my index, and the optimiser started using my index, doing an index seek and running sub-second. Thinking I had solved the problem I rebuilt all the indexes, testing after each one, and my index was used BUT as soon as I flushed the related query plan, the optimiser went back to using a less optimal index, with a seek and key lookup plan and taking 30 seconds.
For now I've resorted to using the OPTION (TABLE HINT(G, INDEX(IX_Test))) to force this, but it's a work around only. Why the optimiser would select a less optimal query plan?

Is there an optimum number of fields that should be included in a clustered index.
At present we have some indexes with up to six fields

Hello -
I have an SQL Server 2000 DB running on a 5 year old server. It has 5 drives SCSI 10KRPM drives on IBM ServeRAID 4Lx card. I'm maxing it out to 9 on the same backplane (all 10KRPM).
Not sure the best way to make them count. Here's the particulars:
1. Current config is:
Vol1 = RAID1 for OS, swap, and Logging files.
Vol2 = RAID5 (3 disks) for DB.
2. The app does heavy writes and use of Temp DB.
I don't have by-volume stats. This stat excludes backup (taken 3 hours after a daytime reboot). Windows Task Manager shows SQL task and SERVICES.EXE both have physical reads about 15% higher than physical writes. SERVICES.EXE has about 3x the IO count as the SQL task. I assume that's mainly SQL activity.
Note: Symantec Antivirus (10.1.6) excludes .mdf, .ldf, .bak, and .trn files.
My question for you: How best to configure the 4 new drives.
Redundancy is critical, so any non-RAIDed volume is out.
Option 1:
Vol1 = RAID1 for OS.
Vol2 = RAID5 (3 disk) for app DB.
Vol3 = RAID1 for Sys DBs (Master etc) plus Temp DB. Also OS Swap. Also .BAK scheduled backup files.
Vol4 = RAID1 for all .ldf files.
Option 2: Abandon RAID5 due to write penalty (same division of files)
Vol1 = RAID1
Vol2 = RAID1
Vol3 = RAID1
Vol4 = RAID1
9th drive = hot swap.
Option 3:
Vol1 = RAID1. for OS and .BAK files.
Vol2 = RAID10 (4 disk). for all .mdf files
Vol3 = RAID1 for all .ldf files.
9th drive = hot swap.
I'm wondering if RAID1 read penalty will outweigh RAID5 write penalty (for 3 stripe RAID5). Will RAID10 advantages outweigh separation of tempDB + System DB on RAID 1 volumes (or RAID5 + RAID1).
Thank you very much for your esteemed advice. :)

In another forum post, a poster was deleting large numbers of rows from a table in batches of 50,000.
In the bad old days ('80s - '90s), I used to have to delete rows in batches of 500, then 1000, then 5000, due to the size of the transaction rollback segments (yes - Oracle).
I always found that increasing the number of deleted rows in a single statement/transaction improved overall process speed - up to some magic point, at which some overhead in the system began slowing the deletes down, so that deleting a single batch of 10,000 rows took more than twice as much time as deleting two batches of 5,000 rows each.
good rule-of-thumb numbers (or even better, some actual statistics and/or explanations) as to how many records should be deleted in a single transaction/statement for optimum speed? 50,000 - 100,000 - 1,000,000 or unlimited? Are there significant differences between 2008, 2012, 2014?

SQL Server 2005 9.0.3161 on Win 2k3 R2
I receive the following error:
"Error: 8624, Severity: 16, State: 1 Internal Query Processor Error: The query processor could not produce a query plan. For more information, contact Customer Support Services."
I have traced this to an insert statement that executes as part of a stored procedure.
INSERT INTO ledger (journal__id, account__id,account_recv_info__id,amount)
VALUES (@journal_id, @acct_id, @acct_recv_id, @amount)
There is also an auto-increment column called id. There are FK contraints on all of the columns ending in "__id". I have found that if I remove the contraint on account__id the procedure will execute without error. None of the other constraints seem to make a difference. Of course I don't want to remove this key because it is important to the database integrity and should not be causing problems, but apparently it confuses the optimizer.
Also, the strange thing is that I can get the procedure to execute without error when I run it directly through management studio, but I receive the error when executing from .NET code or anything using ODBC (Access).

Hey, i've written a query to search a database dependant on variables chosen by user etc etc. Opened up a new sqldatasource, entered the query shown below and went on to the test query page. Entered some test variables, everything works as it should do. Try to get it to show in a datagrid on a webpage - nothing. No data shows.

However, as you can see, the original select query is run twice and joined together.What I was hoping for is this to be done in the original query without the need to duplicate the original query.

I'm trying to find the command to open up an odbc conection inside sql2005 express. I only have ues of an odbc connector, we're conection to remedy. We will eventually be using stored procedures to extract the data we need from remedy and doing additional data crunching. I'm a foxpro programmer so once I get the correct syntax for making the odbc connector I shold be ok. Also I need a really good advanced book on sql2005. The type of book that would have my odbc answer. I've spent all morning trying to find this information and was unable to.
Thanks in advance

-- The 3rd query uses an incorrect column name in a sub-query and succeeds but rows are incorrectly qualified. This is very DANGEROUS!!!
-- The issue exists is in 2008 R2, 2012 and 2014 and is "By Design"
set nocount on
go
if object_id('tempdb.dbo.#t1') IS NOT NULL drop table #t1
if object_id('tempdb.dbo
[code]....
This succeeds when the invalid column name is a valid column name in the outer query. So in this situation the sub-query would fail when run by itself but succeed with an incorrectly applied filter when run as a sub-query. The danger here is that if a SQL Server user runs DML in a production database with such a sub-query which then the results are likely not the expected results with potentially unintended actions applied against the data. how many SQL Server users have had incorrectly applied DML or incorrect query results and don't even know it....?

Hello everybody,
I'm developing a report using the following structure :
declare @sql as nvarchar(4000)
declare @where as nvarchar(2000)
set @sql = 'select ....'
If <conditional1>
begin
set @where = 'some where'
end
If <conditional2>
begin
set @where = 'some where'
end
set @sql = @sql + @where
exec(@sql)
I run it in query analyser and works fine, but when I try to run in Reporting Services, Visual studio stops responding and the cpu reaches 100 %.
I realize that when I cut off the if clauses, then it works at Reporting services.
Does anybody know what is happening?
Why the query works in query analyser and doesn't work in Reporting Service ?
Thanks,
Maurício

For each customer, I want to add all of their telephone numbers to a different column. That is, multiple columns (depending on the number of telephone numbers) for each customer/row. How can I achieve that?
I want my output to be
CUSTOMER ID, FIRST NAME, LAST NAME, TEL1, TEL2, TEL3, ... etc
Each 'Tel' will relate to a one or more records in the PHONES table that is linked back to the customer.
I want to do it using SELECT. Is it possible?

When viewing an estimated query plan for a stored procedure with multiple query statements, two things stand out to me and I wanted to get confirmation if I'm correct.
1. Under <ParameterList><ColumnReference... does the xml attribute "ParameterCompiledValue" represent the value used when the query plan was generated?
<ParameterList>
<ColumnReference Column="@Measure" ParameterCompiledValue="'all'" />
</ParameterList>
</QueryPlan>
</StmtSimple>
2. Does each query statement that makes up the execution plan for the stored procedure have it's own execution plan? And meaning the stored procedure is made up of multiple query plans that could have been generated at a different time to another part of that stored procedure?

I executed the code successfully and I got a box which asked for "Enter the query string".
I typed in the following: EXEC dbo.SalesByCategory @Seafood. I got the following box: Query attempt failed. Must declare the scalar variable "@Seafood". I am learning how to enter the string for the "SQL query programed in the subQuery_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) Handles btnQuery.Click" (see the code statements listed above). Please help and tell me what I missed and what I should put into the query string to get the information of the "Seafood" category out.
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

I have two tables .. in one (containing user data, lets call it u).The important fields are:u.userName, u.userID (uniqueidentifier) and u.workgroupID (uniqueidentifier)The second table (w) has fieldsw.delegateID (uniqueidentifier), w.workgroupID (uniqueidentifier) The SP takes the delegateID and I want to gather all the people from table u where any of the workgroupID's for that delegate match in w. one delegateID may be tied to multiple workgroupID's. I know I can create a temporary table (@wgs) and do a: INSERT INTO @wgs SELECT workgroupID from w WHERE delegateID = @delegateIDthat creates a result set with all the workgroupID's .. this may be one, none or multipleI then want to get all u.userName, u.userID FROM u WHERE u.workgroupIDThis query works on an individual workgroupID (using another temp table, @users to aggregate the results was my thought, so that's included) INSERT INTO @users SELECT u.userName,u.userID FROM tableU u LEFT JOIN tableW w ON w.workgroupID = u.workgroupID WHERE u.workgroupID = @workGroupIDI'm trying to avoid looping or using a CURSOR for the performance hit (had to kick the development server after one of the cursor attempts yesterday)Essentially what I'm after is: SELECT u.userName,u.userID
FROM tableU u
LEFT JOIN tableW w ON w.workgroupID = u.workgroupID
WHERE u.workgroupID = (SELECT workgroupID from w WHERE delegateID = @delegateID) ... but that syntax does not work and I haven't found another work around yet.TIA!

I am trying to run queries against any of the user tables in my MS SQL 7.0 database. I get a message the Query Designer encountered a query error.
We have tried rebooting the SQL Server and I am still getting these messages. Also, the SQL error logs look fine - all database
maintenance are running successfully including the DBCCs which show no errors. Any help would be greatly appreciated as we are to go
into production in a few days.

Could anybody explain the relationship between converting error and timed out query?
If this is poor connection's problem how can I increase the query timeout for the process?

Hi Everyone:
*Before* I actually call up Microsoft SQL Customer Support Services and ask them, I wanted to ping other people to see if you have ever ran into this exact error
"Internal Query Processor Error: The query processor could not produce a query plan. For more information, contact Customer Support Services."
I would have searched the forums myself, but at this moment in time, search is broken :(
If anyone has run into this error before, what conditions would exist that this could happen? That is, if I can sniff this out with suggestions from the community, I would be happy to do so.
It is an oddity because if I alter a couple subqueries in the where clause [ i.e., where tab.Col = (select val from tab2 where id='122') ]to not have subqueries [hand coded values], then the t-sql result is fine. It's not as if subqueries are oddities... I've used them when appropriate.
fwiw - Not a newbie t-sql guy. ISV working almost daily with t-sql since MS SQL 2000. I have never seen this message before...at least I don't recall ever seeing it.
Thanks in advance for other suggested examination paths.

Hi all I'm using Sql server 2000 and sometimes i need to run my Queries in Query analizer before using them in my application just to test them...BUT most of the time when i run a query in query-analizer for second time ,query analizer populates the result (records) more quicker then the first time. Apparently it caches the query !!! i don't know but for some reasons i dont't want this , so how can i prevent Query-analizer from doing so?
Thanks in advance. Regards.

I have a vb.net page that I need to display a list of employees who work in a specific office, based on a MatterID passed in a query string. But, I don't know how to get a value returned from one sql statement into a second. Here's what I'm trying to do...
From the QueryString, we know that the MatterID = 4 ( xxx.aspx?MatterID=4)
Knowing that the Matterid=4, I query the database to get the OfficeId for that MID (Select OfficeID from tMatter where Mid=4) ~This returns an OfficeID of 6
So, then I need to do another query to get the employees where OfficeID = 6 (Select EmployeeID from tEmployees where OfficeID = 6)
How do I do these in one query, or how do I use the Calculated Value for the OfficeID in the 2nd statement?

THis is so annoying. I have 3 ADO executes in my program. THe first one creates a view, the second one performs an outer join on that view and returns a result set, the third execute drops the aforementioned view. THe program that is using this is installed on about 200 computers scattered across Germany and Italy, all querying the same MSsql server 7.0. THe queries run quite quick when few users are actively using the program (after hours for example). however in the heat of the day performance goes up and down dramatically with identical queries taking from 1 to 20 seconds to return their result set. Now I initially thought 'bandwidth issue out of our server'. However I noticed that if I take those three queries and run them from the sql server enterprise manager( running on the same computer as the aforementioned program) then the queries run instantly and the data is in my result pane in less than 2 seconds ALWAYS....even when the program is dogging it with 20 second delays before the result set returns. I know it is hanging on the return of the result set as I put a stop after before each ADO execute in order to check which one was eating up my time. Why is there this dichotomy between running the queries from my enterprise manager versus running them from an ADO object. Both are using TCP/IP (no named pipes involved). I havent monkied with the attributes of the ADO result set so they are all set to default.
I have used the sql server profiler to trace these queries and they always run in less than 33 milliseconds. THe duration is also never more than 33 milliseconds. THis stinks of a network resource issue but what always leads me somewhere else is how consistent the performance of the enterprise manager is when it runs the exact same three queries.
Here is my slightly edited connection string
Public Const connection_string = "Provider=SQLOLEDB;Server=000.000.000.000;" & _
"User ID=johndoe;Password=janedoe;Network=dbmssocn;" & _
"database=fidojoe"
Here are the 3 ADO executes:
conn.Execute (sqlstr_create_view)
Set resultset1 = conn.Execute(sqlstr_get_providers_by_DMISID)
conn.Execute (sqlstr_drop_view)
