Analysis :: Cross Joins Across User Defined Hierarchies Aren't Supported

Sep 20, 2011

I have some confusion on crossjoin function within MDx.while I try to crossjoin the different level sets of same Hierarchy. It shows error as

For example.
‘The Customer Geography hierarchy is used more than once in the Crossjoin function.’
select {
{[Customer].[Customer Geography].[Country].&[United States]}*
{[Customer].[Customer Geography].[State-Province].members}}
on 0
FROM [Adventure Works]
WHERE Measures.[Internet Sales Amount]

Cannot we Cross joins across user defined hierarchies ,or they aren't supported .?Coz I really need to implement as above MDx within my real Cube.I try to implement by making as another Hierarchy Member but it doesn’t gives the value result as what we want/need.with

member [Customer].[Country].[United States ]as [Customer].[Customer Geography].[Country].&[United States]
select {
{[Customer].[Country].[United States ]}*
{[Customer].[Customer Geography].[State-Province].members}}
on 0
FROM [Adventure Works]
WHERE Measures.[Internet Sales Amount]

Using Joins - Why Aren't Them Working?

Jun 25, 2004

See this post for background info & to see the other things I tried:

http://forums.devshed.com/showthread.php?p=691829

----------------------------------------

I'm not sure how well I can explain this without writing a novel.

I want to get all of the subcategories for a given category and list them.

I have 2 tables for this, one is categories and one is subcategories:

categories table:

---------------------------
catid | title | descript |
---------------------------
1 | Forms | find forms |
---------------------------
2 | Legal | legal forms|
---------------------------
3 | Tax | tax forms |
---------------------------

subcategories table:

-----------------
catid | parent |
-----------------
2 | 1 |
-----------------
3 | 1 |
-----------------

I want to now select all of the subcategories for the Forms category. But this snippet of code below returns the parent row instead of the subcategories.

PHP Code:

 $query = "SELECT * FROM categories c LEFT JOIN
 subcategories sc ON c.catid = sc.parent WHERE c.catid = 1";

$catarray = mysql_query($query,$connect);

The code above returns:

1 | Forms | find forms |

When I want it to return:

2 | Legal | legal forms|
---------------------------
3 | Tax | tax forms |

Analysis :: Filter Data For Two Hierarchies

Sep 23, 2015

I have an existing MDX query returning the correct resultset. However, I want to add a filter so that for a combination of value in Hierarchy1 and Hierarchy2, the data is filtered out.

For example I have data like

H1    H2   Amount
1      1      100
2      1      50
3      1     45

I am getting a value of 100+50+45=195.

I want to filter the data for the combination H1=3 and H2=1. Expected result would be 100...

H1    H2   Amount
1      1      100
2      1      50

Analysis :: YTD Calculation For Multiple Hierarchies With SCOPE Statement

Jul 2, 2015

I am stuck in a situation where I want to use YTD for three different calendars of our company and don't want to create three different YTD calculations. However I want to make this work for any measure not for a particular measure

If I create one YTD and try to use in context of three calendars in SCOPE statements then it does not give my right results. Following is my syntax but It does not work.

SCOPE([Billing Date].[SalesCalendar].MEMBERS);
( [Aggregate].[AGGREGATE CODE].[YTD] )
          = Aggregate({[Aggregate].[AGGREGATE CODE].DefaultMember}*{PERIODSTODATE([Billing Date].[SalesCalendar].[Sales Calendar Year],[Billing Date].[SalesCalendar].CURRENTMEMBER) } );

[Code] ....

However if I comment on one of SCOPE statement , other one works but both don't work simultaneously in context of different calendars.

Application Roles For Cross-Database Joins

Aug 25, 2005

I have an application that segregates data into two differentdatabases. Database A has stored procs that perform joins betweentables in database A and database B. I am thinking that I have reachedthe limits of Application Roles, but correct me if I am wrong.My application creates a connection to database A as 'testuser' withread only access, then executes sp_setapprole to gain read writepermissions. Even then the only way 'testuser' can get data out of thedatabases is via stored procs or views, no access to tables directly.Anyone know of a solution? Here is the error I get:Server: Msg 916, Level 14, State 1, Procedure pr_GetLocationInfo, Line38Server user 'testuser' is not a valid user in database 'DatabaseB'The system user is in fact in database A and B.thanksJason Schaitel

Merge2:

and executed the following code to test the different joins. the first three joins worked but the last two did not. would appreciate any insight. DBM is an instance of an AccessDBManager class i have written to encapsulate interactions with Access DBs.

Code:
DBM.SQLExtractString = "select * from Merge1 INNER JOIN Merge2 on Merge1.K1 = Merge2.K1";
DBM.SQLExtract();

DBM.SQLExtract();
s.Format(_T("%d"),DBM.SQLExtractRecords);

appreciate any ideas/comments to get the last two joins to work.

DB Engine :: Linked Server - Getting Error When Performing Cross Instance Query With Joins

Apr 26, 2015

I've successfully created a Linked Server that connects a local DB Engine with another DB Engine through an ip over an extranet. I am able to run simple Select statement queries on the Local DB Engine and get results from the linked server. However when attempting to perform more complex queries that join tables from the linked server with tables from the local DB server, I get the following error message after several minutes of execution:

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "<ip of Linked Server>" returned message "Protocol error in TDS stream".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "<ip of Linked Server>" returned message "Communication link failure".

Msg 10054, Level 16, State 1, Line 0

How I can resolve it. I've read on Distributed Transactions but I understand that it only applies to manipulation statements?

Do Pre-defined Joins In SQL Server Slown Down Inserts/deletions?

Sep 1, 2005

I wanted to know if SQL Server 2000 does something behind the scenes in a transparent manner whenever records are inserted/deleted from two tables between which a join is defined based on a primary key to foreign key relationship. So I have already defined a parent-child relationship through the 'Database Diagram' between these 2 tables. I know when a table is indexed then SQL Server will perform some actions behind the scenes in a transparent manner.The reason I am asking this question is to know if its bad to define parent-child relatioship between 2 tables that will each contain thousands or millions of records.

Perspectives Defined In Analysis Cube Not Working In Report Builder

Feb 20, 2007

I have created a simple cube in BI Studio against an Oracle Relational Data Warehouse. In this cube I have created a perspective in which I have selected (included) only a small subset of measures and dimension. When I view this perspective on the Browse Tab of BI Studio, only the entities that were included in the perspective were available for report construction as was expected.

Next, I generated a model for this cube in Report Manager. Now here is the problem, I then opended the model in Report Builder and selected the same perspective from above, but all of the Entities in the cube were displayed including the fields I explicitely did not include in the perspective. I then looked at the .smdl file describing the Model and it looked like in the Perspective description section all of the cube's entities were included, even the ones that should not have been included. It seems as if the problem is ocurring durring the model generation. I also tried generating the model in Management Studio and it seems to be doing the same thing.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Could I be doing something wrong(probably)? I have to give a presentation soon and this is a big deal for the Project Stakeholders.

By the way, I am using the 180 Day Evaluation of Sql Server 2005 with SP2 CTP installed.

Help With User Defined Function

Jan 10, 2007

I have a UDF that takes my input and returns the next valid business day date. My valid date excludes weekends and holidays.
It works perfect except for one issue. It doesn't check to see if today's date  is a holiday.
I pass a query to sql server like so " select dbo.getstartdate('01/ 10/2007',2)"
It then moves ahead two business days and returns that date.
Here is the current code. Hopefully someone can tell me how to do the holiday check on the current date.
I really don't want to rewrite the whole script .
Code---------------------------------------------------------

User-defined Functions - Help!

Sep 3, 2004

Hi,

I have a search returning many 'car' records (regno, mileage, color, etc)

In a seperate table I have two columns: accessory and regno. This can have many rows for each regnumber.

Within the storedprocedure that returns the 'car' records I need to also return the relevant accessories for that car as one column.

I have written a function as such (with some help!):

ALTER Function getAccs(@regNo varChar(20))
RETURNS varChar
AS
BEGIN
Declare @List varchar(1000)
SELECT @List = COALESCE(@List + ', ', '') + accessory
FROM frxrep2.dbo.usedaccessories WHERE regnumber = @regno
return @List
END

I was hoping that I could simply use this in the 'car' SELECT statement.

ie:

SELECT regNo, color, mileage, dob.getAccs(regno) as AccessoryList
FROM tableBla etc

I'm not even sure if the function works - How can I test in SQL analyzer?

any help much appreciated,

Pete

Hi everyone,

It is working fine. Only problem is if the user passes word 'all' instead of 1,2,3,4 then I have to doSelect * from tableA

User Defined Function Help!

I am trying to compare the data from one table (shipments) with the data from a view. The point of the function is to match the correct territory with the account depending on the data. Basically, I this deals with accounts that are transfering from one territory to another. The transfers take effect on the first day of the month, retroactive, therefore we need to allocate the sales data to the correct territory in the shipments table. Here is my function. Can someone tell me how I can get this to work and insert a territory ID for the account that has transfered into the shipments table?

CREATE FUNCTION fnShipments ()

User Defined Function

I need a UDF that will do the following:

User: Will be sending me a datetime e.g '9 Nov 2004 15:00:00'
I want the UDF to do the following for me
Return in hours the difference between what the user has send and now (lets say now = '10 Nov 2004 11:00:00')
So the UDF will return to me 20.
But I dont want 20, I want the UDF to avoid any all hours which are not work related (any time after 16h00
until 8h00 in the morning), so I want this UDF to return 4. That means from '9 Nov 2004 15:00:00' I have calculated
1hr until 16h00 and 3hrs from 8 until 11h00 on '10 Nov 2004 11:00:00'

AGAIN IT MUST NOT CALCULATE WEEKENDS. Lets say '12 Nov 2004 15:00:00' was Friday and now = '15 Nov 2004 11:00:00', I must still
get 4 as a return from UDF

I would also like now to be my getdate(), but it seems like you can't use it in UDF

User Defined Functions And OLE

Aug 18, 2006

Hi everyone

I am implementing an encrypted data system whereby captured data is encrypted using MS CAPICOM when written to DB and decrypted when displayed. It works well. However, each time you write the data back on update the encryption is different from the previous time.

I have a search screen that allows users to enter text data and submit it looking for matches. Of course, the user is entering unencrypted text and the DB data is encrypted.

This means that you can't encrypt the input data before you try to match because the encryption alogorithm used on the input data will not match that which was used to encrypt the DB data.

Are you with me so far?

So, you have to compare the uncencrypted input data with DECRYPTED DB data - in other words, decrypt the DB data on the fly within the where clause of your query.

I have accomplished this by writing a UDF that instantiates an instance of the CAPICOM encryption module and calling the UDF when applying the query
eg where udf(columnname1) = 'inputtext' or udf(columnname1) = 'inputtext'.

It works, I get the results that I want.

But, alas, the performance has taken a search severe hit.

Has anyone else ventured down this road?

Is there a better way of doing this?

Thanks

Ray

User Defined Types

I've been doing some reading on UDT's and have a question...

It was suggested in one of the pieces I read that you could create a UDT for, in their example, cities. And every table that had a reference to city could share this datatype. Now, my initial thought was "wow, what a great idea! I wouldn't have to remember the exact datatype for my primary keys (was it a char(5) or char(6)?) and have a "central depository" for my key datatypes.

So the first question is; what are the disadvantages of such a design?

And the second is; How do you update a UDT? If business requirements change and udt_city needs to be changed from varchar(30) to varchar(60), for example, what would be the way of echoing the change thoughout your database?

My gut reaction for the answers are
1) performance will decrease as effectively the dbms has to "parse" every insert/update to a UDT field in a different method.

2) create a new udt and alter any tables referencing the old one before dropping it.

What do we think?
