Analysis :: How To Create Parallel Period For Multiple Measures In SSAS 2012

I am trying to create a calculated member for parallel period function using ssas 2012. I have 10 measures for which i need to create parallelperiod.Â
I can successfully create for 1 measure but when i add multiple values to it it breaks. Below is the sample i tried for multiple measures:
sum(ParallelPeriod([Date].[Calendar].[year],1,[Date].[Calendar].currentmember) ,
([Measures].[Revenue],[Measures].[Expenses]))

I have make a calculated member for previous period of an given date range. The previous period is the same date range from the previous year, and I have managed to achieve that with the calculated member:
Create member currentcube.[Measures].[PrevPeriod] as
(ParallelPeriod( [Start Date].[Cal Hierarchy].[Year], 1, [Start Date].[CAL Hierarchy].CurrentMember), [Measures].[Count]);
This member returns the correct result as long as my query uses the time dimension, which makes sense... but I also need to show results sliced by other dimensions in bar charts that do not display the time dimension. For example, I have a dimension with only 3 members called [Region].[Area].[AreaName].
The result set for the bar chart needs to look like this:
[AreaName]Â | [Count]Â |Â [PrevPeriod]
East           |   43     |      56
West          |   53     |      95
But the [PrevPeriod] only returns values if I include the time dimension. I essentially need to sum the results of the time dimension/AreaName/[PrevPeriod] tuple down to just Areaname/[PrevPeriod] for whatever date range may be involved.
I don't know if this is significant to the issue, but the client tool that generates the bar charts builds the query with the date range as a subcube in the FROM statement. If the [PrevPeriod] is outside of the subcube that is still OK, as long as the time dimension is included in an Axis on the final select statement, so at least I know I am not suffering from the members inside the subcube. I've also found in SSMS that it makes no difference if I make the query a subcube, or put the date range in a where clause instead; I still get NULL for [PrevPeriod] without the dates.
I can't imagine that this is an unusual situation, so I hope I've explained it adequately! What is the recommended technique for summarizing a Parallelperiod by dimensions without displaying the time/dates ?

I have developed a cube in my work place for analyzing current year sales with previous year sales in Time Hierarchy (Year- Quarter- Month) using Parallel period. If we want to see data for particular Quarters i.e. Q1 and Q2 then total at the year level should also get change. Currently if we only choose 2 quarters in the filter then current year data gets change, however data using parallel period is not getting change accordingly and its shows Total of full year.

Our client wants to report on their trade volume for last year as compared to the current quarter. For simplicity let's pretend they have a report where they have a two key measures:
[Trade Volume - Tons]
[Trade Volume - Tons MTD]
[Trade Volume - Tons]
is based on outlook - that is, for any period we are reporting on the trade volume will be reported as actuals that have been loaded up until the current period, and forecast for the current and future periods.
[Trade Volume - Tons MTD] is based only on actuals - that is for any period we are reporting on the trade volume will be reported as actuals that have been loaded up until and including the current period, and 0 for any future periods.
If Feb09 is our current period, and we are using quarter on the time dimension (where quarter 1=Jan09,Feb09,Mar09) and we have the following data:
Jan09 Trade Volume Actual: 100 Trade Volume Forecast: 150
Feb09 Trade Volume Actual: 50 Trade Volume Forecast: 200
March09 Trade Volume Actual: 75 Trade Volume Forecast: 225
Then
[Trade Volume - Tons]=100+200+225=525
[Trade Volume - Tons MTD]=100+50=150
This is a problem, because the comparison with their current results ([Trade Volume - Tons MTD]) with what they 'forecast' ([Trade Volume - Tons]) is not based on the same period of time - we are comparing the sum of two periods versus three periods.To solve this we changed the reporting period to be monthly granularity, and now select Jan09-Feb09 as our range (as opposed to having a quarter granularity and selecting Q1,2009 in the example above).
This works well and produces the expected results:
[Trade Volume - Tons]=100+200=350
[Trade Volume - Tons MTD]=100+50=150
However, this introduces a secondary problem: we are doing a prior year calculation on the Trade Volume also, so the users can compare how the actuals are comparing to the same period last year.To do this we use the following formula for the prior year calculation:
Prior Year Actuals=([Measures].[Trade Volume - Tons], ParallelPeriod([Time].[544 Hierarchy].[Period Year],1,[Time].[544 Hierarchy].currentmember))
The problem is as soon as we move from quarter granularity to (monthly granularity AND select more than one monthly period) the Prior Year Actuals calculation produces a an error "The MDX function CURRENTMEMBER failed because the coordinate for the 'Period Year' attribute contains a set".So, ParallelPeriod does not like it when currentmember is a range (Jan09,Feb09) rather than a single period (Jan09).

I've created a cube and it processed fine. The calculate command is there. The measure that I'm attempting to run in the SSAS/Visual Studios browser is simply a count rows measure. When I drag the measure to the window, it says no rows available. If I click on the filter that allows nulls, the only change it makes is that it goes from no rows available to "NULL".Â

I am creating an SSIS Script Task that will be used to process SSAS dimensions and partitions and ideally log the details of each in a table. Any info on the benefits or drawbacks of using the built-in SSAS parallel processing as opposed to doing it manually in a multi-threaded "Parallel.Foreach" loop using the .NET AMO library.
In my testing, when I use a Parallel.foreach loop, I am able to obtain and log information about the object such as end time and time to process immediately after each object is processed. Â This allows me to keep a history of processing time for each object:

I have a monthly time period dimension representing average number of students for each month. At the yearly aggregate level I don't want it to sum up the avg number of students from every month because that number is incorrect. I would like it to use the number of students from the most recent month as a roll up. Is that possible to configure in SSAS?

I am working on SQL 2012.We have a SSAS Cube build. On top of it client use Excel to connect to SSAS Cube and See the reports.My Cube process every hour and take almost a 1-2 min to Process.When ever End user/Client See or refresh the Excel report (Which use Cube as Source),WHEN CUBE IS PROCESSING ,they get an error that Source is not available
We Have tried best but cannot bring down the Processing time of the cube to 3-5 Second , so that End user don't face report refresh issue at the moment of cube processingÂ
Requirement :In Case End User see the report while Cube is processing from back end , Instead of Error they should see some customize Msg which we can provide some thing Like "Data is Refreshing , please wait ".

I have a MDX query , where I have a date Range in where clause.
I want to replace it with Cuurent Date and Last 7 days date.

I am developing a BI solution on SQL Server 2008 R2 and how to handle multiple referances to the same dimension from a fact table!
Here is the scenario;
Fact_Contracts (# M)
ServiceProvider_CompanyID, Client_CompanyID, Amount_USDÂ
Dim_Company( hundreds)
ID, CityID, ProfessionID, CompanyName
Dim_City
ID, CityName
Dim_Profession
 ID, ProfessionName
As u can see there is two company references in my fact table, and the schema is in snowflake. My customer requirements state that the Contracts' amounts can be aggregated/filtered for/by, ServiceProviderCompany, its city/profession or ClientCompay, its city/profession.
First thing came in to my mind is to dublicate whole dimension structure (one for serviceproviders, one for clients), which i thought that there should be another way around?

We have an Excel PowerPivot model that we are trying to move to SSAS Tabular. The model is complex and has over 300 measures. To group these in Excel, we pasted in dummy tables and defined the measures in logical groupings. Now when we are migrating to SSAS, we have to delete the pasted tables --that have ALL of the measures, in order for the import to work successfully.
How to migrate the model? We have a nice report of all of the measures from DAX Studio, but I am not looking forward to manually re-entering 300 measures through the user interface. Is there any way to define measures in batch? Or is there a way to change the pasted table to a file so the import will work? Will the import work in SSAS 2016?

I have a problem where I have 3 three measures in a virtual cube:
"Actual", "Budget" and "Full Year Budget".
The dimensions I have are:
- Account No_ / Name
- Cost Code
- Sub Cost Code
- Time/Dates
- Budget Name
Both "Actual" & "Budget" measures need to be filtered/dimensioned by:
- Account No_ / Name
- Cost Code
- Sub Cost Code
- Time/Dates (exclusive to "Actual", "Budget")
Thus have put these in one cube
AND "Full Year Budget" needs to be filtered/dimensioned by:
- Account No_ / Name
- Cost Code
- Sub Cost Code
- Budget Name (exclusive to "Full Year Budget")
THUS have put this as one cube…
I then created a virtual cube, with the 2 cubes thinking that the dimensions I created in the original cubes would only filter the measures of the original cube measures in the virtual cube. ...BUT all dimension filters in the virtual cube filter all measures in the virtual cube, irrespective of which dimensions were created with the original cubes.
please help!

I have a cumulative measure in Tabular, and when I filter by a date in SQL it brings back all rows up to that date. However, when I drill down on any of the numbers, it only brings back rows related to the filtered date, and not the cumulative rows. Is there any way round this at all? Major obstacle for me at the moment...

I used formula Measures.Amount/Measures.Count, this formula is not showing correct results when I don't drag any dimensions, it is showing results for All member as 425, but it should show as 350.
So I made a same change ([L].[LK].Currentmember, Measures.Amount)/([L].[LK].Currentmember,Measures.Count), this worked fine but performance is very low and so stopped working on this.
Atlast I did the measure group like this

I am pretty new to MDX and am having trouble getting what I need out of this MDX query. Some business rules:
Gross Amount applies to all clients, whether Type A or Type B. Â I always want to return Gross Amount.Some clients are Type A, some are Type B, some are both, and some are neither.There are Type A Net Amount and Type B Net Amount values for all clients, but I only want to display the Type A Net value if the client is a Type A client, only Type B if the client is a Type B, or both for both, and neither for neither. Â I would like to return blank/null, not $0.00, for those values that should not be displayed.
Here's the basic query. Â

I'm trying to show measures from 2 measures groups in a drillthrough. Obviously, it's not possible with a standard drillthrough action, but I still hope that I can somehow achieve this with the ASSP GetCustomDrillthroughMDX function.
Speaking in AdventureWorks2008R2 terms: Imagine I have a pivot table with Product Categories in filter (say, filtered on Gloves) and "Internet Sales Amount" as measure. From context menu in Excel I can call the drillthrough action which shows me the individual sales records. I would like to show in drillthrough additionally "End of Day Rate" measure from "Exchange Rates" measure group.
One option would be to join FactInternetSales with FactCurrencyRate and make EndOfDayRate a physical measure in the "Internet Sales" measure group. This is a pretty huge overhead for my scenario and I'd like to avoid this.
Another one would be to call something completely external for a drillthrough (for example, a SRRS Report).

I've 2 measures that I would like to swap according to which member in a dimension are selected by the user:Ex.
[Measure].[A]
[Measure].[B]
Dimension called TEMP with 2 members (HOT and COLD).So if the user choose HOT it should show [Measure].[A] and if the user choose COLD it should show [Measure].[B]If the dimension is not included in the analysis by the user or if no dimension attribute are choosed then it should default to [Measure].[A].How to do that as Calculated Script in the SSAS cube ?

I am trying to develop a cube with translated calculated measures in it. I have also translated the all underlying measures/dimensions being used in action for a header.
I can see my translated measures and dimension in excel but when I go to Underlying data, I see default member's names not the translated one. Please note that I have translated all underlying members.

I am new one in MDX. Our PeriodsToDate function does not return any value. We have set type property of our Date Dimension as time.Actually CURRENT MEMBER does not return a valid value. So our PeriodsToDate function fail.

large tabular cubes (SSAS 2012 SP2), with lots of calculations, the keyboard seems to be stuck, one cannot type or make any modifications to any measures, even after closing a project.
The only workaround is to completely restart the machine. Â Using Visual Studio 2010 Shell.
Are there any possibly corruptions or calc limitations that one should be aware of?
Notable that this never happens with any small cubes, but just with the largest cube that we have, that has probably tens of calcs. Â

1. As per my current development SQL Sever Analysis Database consists of two Cube (Cube A and Cube B).  Cube A and Cube B share the same data source view (DSV1). The source for both these cubes has the same data source (DS1).
2. As per the requirement I need to create third Cube i.e. Cube C. Is it possible to create a second Data Source View (DSV2). The Source of second Data Source View (DSV2) will be the same data source(DS1).
I am thinking to create second Data Source View (DSV2) for Cube C because existing layout of the DSV1 has become complex. I wanted to know the pros and cons of creating a multiple data source view with same data source

Hello All,
After hitting limitations in the SQL CLR world that bar us from invoking COM objects we are forced to use windows services to read the messages off the Service Broker Queues.
Unfortunately we loose the auto activation feature in the Queues, but we can still read messages and perform the SQL work under one transaction.
We are going to attempt to take N messages simultaneously from the Queue, though N instances of a windows service. If the messages send to the queue are one message per conversation, will we be able to achieve having N readers take messages off simultaneounsly?

P.S. if anyone has a better approach to obtaining the message in "out of sql code" or invoking external (not assemblies stores in SQL server) code libraries, that would be etremely nice to hear. I have thought about invoking a web service through CLR, but that is probably too much overhead - MSMQ seems much more appealing than a web service;

I have a fact table with one column storing string values. I need to use this column as a measure, but as different measure. Here's a snapshot of the fact ( with 4 columns)
#1 #2 #3 #4(value)
1 1 2007-12-20 Male
2 1 2007-12-20 French
1 2 2007-12-20 Female
2 2 2007-12-20 English
I have a dimension which is like
id name
1 Gender
2 Language
Is there a way to get measures from column 4 in fact table - so that I can give reports like how gender graph during a time period or language usage during a time period. The design will have more than 2 dimension members, so fact column can hold more data like location, etc...
Can you please suggest a way to handle such kind of fact table?
When I try to create a measure based on that column (and 'no aggregation') - I get error like - "Error 1 Errors in the metadata manager. The data type of the 'value' measure is not valid because the data type of the measure is a string type."

I have a date dimension with below Hieararchy:
Year-->Quarter-->Month-->Week
Week is the lowest granular attribute.
Also i have a measure 'Holdings'
I would like to create calculated measure which should give me closing holdings at all levels(week ,Month,Quarter and year levels.) whichever i pull in the browse pane.
Below calculated measure would show the holdings for whatever the level you have specified.
([Measures].[Holdings],
ClosingPeriod( [DIM BI DATE].[Calendar].[WEEK], [DIM BI DATE].[Calendar].CurrentMember
))
But this measure shows the value for only week attribute.
for month,([Measures].[Holdings],ClosingPeriod( [DIM BI DATE].[Calendar].[Month],
[DIM BI DATE].[Calendar].CurrentMember ))
But my aim is to create a calculated measure to give closing value for any level.

calculating a rolling median over a period of 3 years.
I already calculate median and I've tried to calculate rolling median over a period of 3 years as below.
 MEDIAN([Date].[Year].CurrentMember.Lag(3):[Date].[Year].CurrentMember,[Measures].[median])
What this does is, it calculates the median of the medians over the period of 3 years. But, what I'm looking for is the overall median of the underlying measure over a period of 3 years.
What I have now:
Year1 - 41,52,73; Â Median1 - 52
Year2 - 6,9,12; Â Median2- 9
Year3 - 24,68,89; Median3 - 68
Overall Median of 9,52,68 - 52
What I need:
Year1 - 41,52,73; Â Median1 - 52

I have the need to calculate a distinct count over a period of 3 years. I use the MDX Â
SUM([Year].[Year].CurrentMember.Lag(2):[Year].[Year].CurrentMember,[Measures].[CNT])
Which works fine for all my other calculations except this, where I need a distinct count. CNT is a calculated measure. The browser would look like this:

How can I achieve this?
