Analysis :: One Single User Can Bring SSAS Server Down

Jul 27, 2015

Running PivotTable reports in Excel 2007 which are linked to a SSAS Server 2008 R2 may consume high amount of memory and cause high CPU utilization.

Detail:users may set 7 or more dimensions in row section of a Pivottable report. Some of those dimensions were containing more than 10000 members.

When refreshing such a report, Analysis Services is consuming more than 16 GB of memory, cpu utilization often goes up to 80%.

To run this report it takes arround 10 minutes. During this time other users may be unable to run reports on the server.Is there a way to control expensive MDX queries caused by some users to ensure Service availability?

Analysis :: Data Masking For Dimension Attribute Based On User In SSAS 2014 Multidimensional?

Jun 15, 2015

I am trying to implement data masking based on user login and not sure why this is not working. I have the dimensions DimBrand, DimProduct and DimUser. I should mask the BrandCode with 'XXXX' nothing but in the report all the BrandCode should appear but few of the code will be masked if the user is not belongs to that group. I have a fact table FactProduct in this. In the cube I created all these 3 dimensions and the fact table. I created a new dimension DimBrandMask and I separated the code over there with a relationship with the actual DimBrand dimension. In the cube a reference relationship is set up with the measure group. Created a role with read access.

In the dimension data tab of role I put the below MDX to allowed set.

NonEmpty([DimBrandMask].[Brand Code].Members, (StrToMember("[DimUser].[Login Name].[Login Name].[" + UserName() + "]") ,[Measures].[Dim User Count]))

And in Denied Member set i put the below MDX

IIF( (StrToMember("[DimUser].[Login Name].[Login Name].[" + UserName() + "]"), [DimUser].[Access Right].&[False]), NONEMPTY( [DimBrandMask].[Brand Code].Members,(StrToMember("[DimUser].[Login Name].[Login Name].["
+ UserName() + "]"), [DimUser].[Access Right].&[False], [Measures].[Dim User Count])),{})

Note I created one measure group from the DimUser table and the measure [Dim User Count] is used in the above query.

I am expecting some result like below

Brand      BrandCode           Count
Brand1      b1                       6
Brand2     XXXXX                  5
Brand3     XXXXX                 10

Permissions Not Effective For Windows Authentication Login

Jul 7, 2007

Hello All,

I'm hoping someone can help me with this puzzle.

Most logins I've created have been SQL Server authenticated. I assign the login newEmployee to a role existingRole, and ensure the role has the required permissions. This didn't seem to be rocket science....

My company has been provided with an application with a SQL Server back-end. My instructions were to create a Windows authenticated login and give it full access to the database. I followed the above principles, but running the application, the user got the error -

SELECT permission denied on object 'sysobjects', database 'databasename', owner 'dbo'.

So I decided to try the simplest possible scenario to make it work:

I've created a login DOMAINewEmployee with Windows authentication.

DOMAINewEmployee has been granted access to databasename.

By default, DOMAINewEmployee is a member of Public.

Public has been granted all available permissions on all objects.

ie... grant all on userTables to public

........grant all on sysobjects to public

........grant all on otherSystemTables to public

etc.

Running the application, the user still gets the above error. I'd send the problem back to the vendor, except if I've logged onto the PC as DOMAINewEmployee, querying -

select * from dbo.sysobjects

via Query Analyser produces the same error message. (An equivalent error message is produced when querying a user-created table).

To compare, I then created a login newEmployee2 with SQL Server authentication.

newEmployee2 has been granted access to databasename.

select * from dbo.sysobjects

runs successfully from Query Analyser (as to any queries on user-created tables).

What else is required to grant access to tables from a Windows authenticated login?

( What really scares me, is that the application will run if I make the Windows authenticated login a member of server roles System Administrator and Database Creators, then the application will run - but I don't want this to be the permanent solution. Even after doing this, the above query still fails in Query Analyser for that login, suggesting that there is something wrong with how I configured the permissions. )

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Kim.

Analysis :: SSAS Calculated Member - MDX

Jul 1, 2015

I have a Calculated Member in SSAS that I need to adjust based what the current member is.

The code is below

CASE WHEN [Measures].[End LIS] = 0 AND "HELP" THEN
CASE WHEN [Measures].[Beginning LIS] = 0 OR [Measures].[Beginning LIS] + [Measures].[Beginning LIS] + [Measures].[NETACTIVATIONS] = 0 THEN NULL ELSE
 ROUND([Measures].[Disconnects]/(([Measures].[Beginning LIS] + [Measures].[Beginning LIS] + [Measures].[NETACTIVATIONS])/2) * 100 ,2) END
ELSE ROUND(([Measures].[Disconnects] / [AVERAGELIS] * 100) ,2)
END

In English - i need this to translate to - of End LIS is 0 "AND the current member is the current month and current year" THEN carry on

Else ROUND(([Measures].[Disconnects] / [AVERAGELIS] * 100) ,2).

I came up with

CASE WHEN [Measures].[End LIS] = 0
AND [Dim Date].[FSCL_YM].[Month Nm].currentmember.membervalue = Format(now(), "yyyy")+"]&["+Format(now(), "M")
THEN
CASE WHEN [Measures].[Beginning LIS] = 0 OR [Measures].[Beginning LIS] + [Measures].[Beginning LIS] + [Measures].[NETACTIVATIONS] = 0 THEN NULL ELSE
 ROUND([Measures].[Disconnects]/(([Measures].[Beginning LIS] + [Measures].[Beginning LIS] + [Measures].[NETACTIVATIONS])/2) * 100 ,2) END
ELSE ROUND(([Measures].[Disconnects] / [AVERAGELIS] * 100) ,2)
END

But to no avail.

Analysis :: Calculated Attribute In SSAS?

Sep 17, 2015

I've been working with SSAS for a good few years now but I keep bumping into this problem - my users are trying to build a measure that is based on a calculated attribute and finding it difficult to work out how to write the MDX to do so. Intuitively, they thought a Calculated Member would work, but I don't think a Calculated Member is quite the same thing from my understanding.

So, here's the scenario.

We have a Product Dimension. We have a Measure that is the Number of days the Product took to make, e.g. 5 days. We also have a Product Count measure that counts the number of Products.

The user would like to write a calculated measure that works out the number of products that took <5 days, 5-10 days, 10-15 days etc.It would be easy to write a set of calculated measures for each of these bandings, but the user wants effectively a single dynamic attribute to use in the calculation in order to automatically distribute these values across the columns in their pivot table.

Is this even possible? I was thinking I could build an attribute on the Product Dimension in the ETL to do this quite easily, but the user wants to be able to change the bandings on the fly by changing the MDX for the attribute, rather than go back to the developer every time.

Analysis :: Count Of Rows In SSAS MDX Query

Sep 17, 2015

I need to find the percentile using cube so i am using the below formula :

((n-1) * p /100) -1

n= count of number of array records
p= percentile

I am using below MDX query:

WITH MEMBER [Measures].[PV] AS 25
Member [Measures].[CntCT] as Count(NonEmpty([Tb City].[City Name].&[DC], [Measures].[CPT1]))
Member [Measures].[PVInt25] as  Int(((([Measures].[CntCT] - 1)* [Measures].[PV])/100) - 1)
Member [Measures].[PVC] as ([Measures].[CPT1],Order(NonEmpty([Tb City].[City Name].&[DC],[Measures].[CPT1]),
[Measures].[CPT1],ASC).Item([Measures].[PVInt25]))

Select [Measures].[PVC] on columns, {[Tb City].[City Name]} on rows from test;

The line 2:
Member [Measures].[CntCT]

In that i need to find the n count of rows where city is DC (City is my Dimension) in Measures CPT1

But currently it is giving the result 1 instead in actual in my test cube there is the city DC exists with 23 CPT1 rows count.

I tried the below query:

SELECT NON EMPTY {[Tb City 1].[City Name].[City Name].&[DC]  }
   ON COLUMNS, NON EMPTY { ( [Measures].[Tb Main Count] ) }
 ON ROWS FROM [test]

Above query gives me the correct count i.e. 23 but i need to get the result of above query in line 2 of MDX query:

Member [Measures].[CntCT]
