Analysis :: Logon Failure - Unknown User Name Or Bad Password
Jan 26, 2015
I am trying to connect Sharepoint 2013 services (performancepoint , excel services) to SSAS 2012 using the EffectiveUserName.
I was getting a error message regarding conencting the datasource and when checking profiler it was saying Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
On the SSAS server i tried using EffectiveUserName in the additional Connection Parameters and it failed for the above reason. I also tried my username as well as the sharepoint service accountthe sharepoint service account and my username are both server admins.
When I try using the EffectiveUserName in the additional Connection Parameters on another server I can connect with no problems.
What seems to be the different with server where I am getting the error message?
I'm trying to execute a SSIS package via proxy user but I keep getting the following error message regardless of I have tried to do to fix it, I have done the following so far:-
1. Recreated the proxy user 2. Retyped the password, under credentials
Message : Unable to start execution of step 1 (reason: Error authenticating proxy "proxyname", system error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.). The step failed.
i'm a software devoloper , i writed a web application and use with this application sql server 2005

I am writing an ASP.NET intranet application on a Windows XP machine running IIS 5.1 which executes a MS SQL Server 2000 DTS package as part of the process. The application allows the user to select a UNC path of an input source (.txt) file to be procesed by the DTS pacakge and the UNC file path property is then set in the source object name of the DTS package tasks before executing the DTS package. Whenever I run the application using a file path that is on my development machine (the same machine that the web server is on) it works fine. When I select a source file path that is on a network share folder, the DTS package fails with the following error:Event Type: ErrorEvent Source: DataTransformationServicesEvent Category: NoneEvent ID: 81Date: 2/14/2007Time: 12:58:06 PMUser: N/AComputer: PHILSDELL2Description:The execution of the following DTS Package failed: Error Source: Microsoft Data Transformation Services (DTS) PackageError Description:Package failed because Step 'DTSStep_DTSDataPumpTask_2' failed.Error code: 80040428Error Help File:sqldts80.hlpError Help Context ID:700Package Name: ATMRecon_ImportElanACHTxtPackage Description: (null)Package ID: {3A8CC31D-A81F-40B7-BE57-AEB3AA238088}Package Version: {B01420A7-ED22-49A7-B4C7-9FA1732394E3}Package Execution Lineage: {2A9D45E8-35F8-4F0A-8339-7E5E29DA08B7}Executed On: PHILSDELL2Executed By: webaccess23Execution Started: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMExecution Completed: 2/14/2007 12:58:06 PMTotal Execution Time: 1.047 secondsPackage Steps execution information:Step 'DTSStep_DTSExecuteSQLTask_1' succeededStep Execution Started: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMStep Execution Completed: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMTotal Step Execution Time: 0.047 secondsProgress count in Step: 0Step 'DTSStep_DTSExecuteSQLTask_2' succeededStep Execution Started: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMStep Execution Completed: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMTotal Step Execution Time: 0.047 secondsProgress count in Step: 0Step 'DTSStep_DTSDataPumpTask_1' failedStep Error Source: Microsoft Data Transformation Services Flat File Rowset ProviderStep Error Description:Error opening datafile: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.Step Error code: 80004005Step Error Help File:DTSFFile.hlpStep Error Help Context ID:0Step Execution Started: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMStep Execution Completed: 2/14/2007 12:58:06 PMTotal Step Execution Time: 1 secondsProgress count in Step: 0Step 'DTSStep_DTSDataPumpTask_2' failedStep Error Source: Microsoft Data Transformation Services Flat File Rowset ProviderStep Error Description:Error opening datafile: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.Step Error code: 80004005Step Error Help File:DTSFFile.hlpStep Error Help Context ID:0Step Execution Started: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMStep Execution Completed: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMTotal Step Execution Time: 0.031 secondsProgress count in Step: 0 When I check the Security Event Log on the server on which the network share is located, I find the following set of messages repeated multiple times:Event Type: Failure AuditEvent Source: SecurityEvent Category: Account Logon Event ID: 680Date: 2/14/2007Time: 1:02:48 PMUser: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEMComputer: FS1ADescription:Logon attempt by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0 Logon account: ASPNET Source Workstation: PHILSDELL2 Error Code: 0xC000006AEvent Type: Failure AuditEvent Source: SecurityEvent Category: Logon/Logoff Event ID: 529Date: 2/14/2007Time: 1:02:48 PMUser: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEMComputer: FS1ADescription:Logon Failure: Reason: Unknown user name or bad password User Name: ASPNET Domain: PHILSDELL2 Logon Type: 3 Logon Process: NtLmSsp Authentication Package: NTLM Workstation Name: PHILSDELL2 Caller User Name: - Caller Domain: - Caller Logon ID: - Caller Process ID: - Transited Services: - Source Network Address: 10.120.4.61 Source Port: 0The problem appears to be that the DTS package is trying to access the input source file using the local ASPNET Id from PHILSDELL2 which does not have authority to the network share. The ASP.NET application is using impersonation, set up through the web.config file: <identity impersonate="True" userName="registry:HKLMSOFTWARESkylightATMReconidentityASPNET_SETREG,userName" password="registry:HKLMSOFTWARESkylightATMReconidentityASPNET_SETREG,password" />The application can sucessfully access the network share under the impersonated id (the application first verifies the existience of the source files before executing the DTS package). I have wracked my brain trying to determine where the ASPNET security context is coming from to no avail. Can someone shed some light on what security credentials the DTS package is using to access the source files and how to change them?
I am setting up the replication with the scripts which used to setup in MSSQL2005 (non-cluster server). After I run the script and start the snapshot agent, log agent or distributed agent, it prompts,
Unable to start execution of step 2 (reason: Error authenticating proxy abc.comadmin9, system error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.). The step failed.
abc.comadmin9 is the administrator for all cluster, mssql service and I am sure that the username and password is correct.
I have come across this error message in ssrs and cannot seem to locate the error. Report manager lets me logon-- I can navigate to the folder but once I click on the actual report I get this error
Hello All!!! I have a 1.1 asp.net applications that has been in production for a little over a year. It is remoted from a webserver --> application server --> that access data server. I am using win2003 servers and sql 2000. Recently, the application has been having an issue retrieving and storing documents to the sql server. When diagnosing the problem I have ran communication testing to make sure the servers are communicating as they should, I have ran the stored procedure to test for retrieval times and/or failure. So far everything has checked out. While researching the issue, I ran across information that suggested changing from the SQLClient provider to the OLEDB provider. All the changes I have tried appear to have no affect. I will mention that this does seem to occur only when retrieving larger files(probably a communication issue which I have my communications staff looking into). Has anyone experienced this issue and maybe know of any possible solutions? Thanks in advance
After upgrading a server from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005, I can't get any SQL Agent jobs to run, giving logon failed messages. MSSQLSERVER and SQLSERVERAGENT services are set up to run as the same domain account which has administrative rights to the server and is a SQL login with the sysadmin role. For basic testing purposes, I created a test job that all it does is run a T-SQL command 'SELECT @@VERSION'. The job is also set to run as the same account that the Agent is running under. Below are the logs (with trace messages on) from the point of starting the Agent to my attempt to run the job (user and server names have been changed to protect the innocent):

IIS has 4 websites hosted on it. The parent level allows anonymous with windows auth off, but the website level has anonymous off with widnows auth and digest. In IIS, is there a problem with having the parent level anonymous and website level windows auth?
Uknown Member is set to "Uknown" in the cube . This cannot be changed because it needs to be visible in other applications. However, in my particular MDX I want to create a custom set that excludes this member.
WITHSET setNoUnknowns as EXCLUDE( [Dim].[Hierarchy].CHILDREN, { [Dim].[Hierarchy].UNKNOWNMEMBER } )SELECT{[Measure].[MeasureName]} on COLUMNS,setNoUnknowns on ROWSFROM [Cube]
With the above MDX, I still get a return for member "Unknown". I've confirmed that there isn't an explicit member name of "Unknown".Excluding [Dim].[Hierarchy].[Unknown] does not work either.
We have a new production server with SQLserver 2005. Our department responsible ofr the installation made it as secure as possible, however. I have to put a new backup on to the server from the old production server. We ran into a problem when we removed the old database. I could not longer logon to the server with an authenticated user.
"A connection was successfully established with the server, but an error occured during the login process" "Shared memory provider : error 0 : No process is on the other end of the pipe"
Strange thing is when i create a new database with the same name. The user can logon to the server again.
We currently have a production server (prodserver) and backup server (backupserver) in the same domain, and I am attempting to backup dbs from the production box on to the backup box using the following:
backup database db to disk = '\backupservere$ackupdb.bak' with init
when executing from SSMS, I receive the following error:
Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device '\backupservere$ackupdb.bak' Operating system error 1326 (Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password)
Here's where the issue lies for me:
Both the production and backup box are running services under the same domain accounts, let's call it "domainsqlagent"
domainsqlagent has domain admin rights on backupserver and prodserver
I can login to both the production and backup servers using the domain account, map drives, hit administrative shares, drag and drop files, etc between the servers
If I use xp_cmdshell to try and simply move a file between prodserver and backupserver, I receive the above error as well. However, if I open an cmd window and execute the move command from DOS, it will successfully move.
There is a development server on the domain as well (devserver) using domainsqlagent to run the service accounts, and I can successfully backup databases from dev to prod, dev to backup, backup to dev, backup to prod, prod to dev, but NOT prod to backup Finally, if I create a maintenance plan in SSMS, I cannot create a connection to the backup server (error reads the connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection)
The backup server was changed to a different domain (domain2) before I arrived here, but has been switched back now, rebooted, service accounts changed via Configuration Manager, services restarted (and rebooted again for good measure). Does SSMS use a different security context to create the connections to remote servers? From all my tests, the domainsqlagent account has all the correct rights and is working OK. Could this be a network issue? The network admin and I have been banging our heads against a wall for the past couple of days, so if anyone has seen something like this, I'd appreciate any help.
This is my first time to deploy an asp.net2 web site. Everything is working fine on my local computer but when i published the web site on a remote computer i get the error "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed" (only in pages that try to access the database) Help pleaseee
I have one old sql 2000 server and I backup the database and restore it to SQL 2008 R2 database. I can see all the tables and users but I do not know, how to move database user and logon's.
We seem to be being plagued by the error below by our SQL Server agent. This happens almost everytime we restart the server that has been running for a day or two.
Our SQL Server Agent uses a none expiring domain credential. I understand that this problem only happens when the profile being used by the SQL Servr Agent has changed (password change). What puzzles me is that the login is A ok and no changes has been made to it's password.
We always resolve this problem by changing the login used in the SQL Server Agent to local and after that, returning it back to it's original domain login. Unfortunately, we cant always do this everytime something goes wrong.
Can anyone please help us shed a light on this? We're using SQL2k with SP3a. Thanks!
Error:
An error 1069 - )The service did not start due to logon failure) occurred while performing this service operation on the SQLServerAgent service.
I just upgraded to Vista and can not run the website anymore. Getting: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'. error I added that user to all databases as db_owner, but that did not help..
I am receiving the above error when using a workstation to connect to my webfiles.
I am using windows authentication (whcih I have selected as my only option on the IIS). Impersonate is set to true in the webconfig file, with authentication set to Windows.
My connection string is: SQLConnection1 = "initial catalog=SIMS;data source=spacesql;integrated security=SSPI"
It runs no problem when I use the localhost. It allows me to use other aspx pages that do not connect to the SQL server. It only gives me this error when I am using a page that tries to connect to the SQL server.
The SQL files reside on a separate server to the IIS and I would like it to remain this way.
I get the following error message when I select a report:
An error has occurred during report processing.
Cannot create a connection to data source 'PSS5'.
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'.
My Data source is set to Windows Integrated Security when I get this error message. If I change my data source to be "Credential supplied by the user running the report", the report generates fine. I am running SQL 2005 SP2. I have SQL reporting services installed on different server than my database services. Both servers are W2K3 R2 x64.
My IIS website and virtual directories are set up for Integrated Windows Authentication. My IIS application pool is set up to use an AD service account. I have followed the step/procedures outlined at: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/technologies/security/tkerbdel.mspx
I'm trying to connect to a Sql Server 2005 database from my local development machine, which is running IIS 5.1 (Windows XP Pro). The web application is not using impersonation and has anonymous access enabled. In my system's machine.config file, I've set the processModel section to look like:
This has been working fine for us connecting to SQL Server 2000 databases (running on Windows 2003). When we connect, I access Sql 2000 databases under the context of "OurDomainMyMachineName$". However, we've recently installed Sql Server 2005 on a new Windows 2003 server & when I connect to that server, I receive the error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'
when trying to call the SqlConnection.Open() method. Our connection string is very basic:
Data Source=sql-dev2; Initial Catalog=TestDatabase; Integrated Security=True; Application Name=PrototypeWebservice;
In the Sql Server logins, we've granted the computer account "OurDomainMyMachineName$" db_owner access to every database (in both Sql Server 2000 & 2005).
I am able to connect to the Sql Server 2005 databases if I change my section in machine.config to <processModel userName="OurDominamyPersonalAccount" password="myPersonalPwd"/>, or if I move the application to an IIS6 server & set the application pool identity to NETWORK SERVICE, but we'd like to continue accessing our Sql Server 2005 databases (from our development machines running IIS5.1) as we currently access our Sql Server 2000 databases; under the context of "OurDomainMyMachineName$".
Would anyone have any ideas why this would be happening or how to resolve? Thanks in advance.
When I'm trying to logon the reporting service main page, the user logon dialogue box will ask you to input the authorized user id and password(It's the account created in windows system). But when I try to open certain report!on my reporting server, this logon dialogue box will be displayed again and I have to input the account and password again. All the reports can be directly opened after second entry.
So my quesition is how to setup reporting service so that I can open all the reports directly just after the first entry. That will bother users to browse report!freely only after inputing authority information twice.
PS: My platform is Windows 2K Server SP4 + SQL Server 2K SP4.
I have two machines that i want to use for merge replication :
Laptop ( Publisher + Distributor )
VPS90 ( Subscriber )
Both connected via the internet
NO DOMAIN
Need to implement merge replication ,after initializing the snapshot I get the following error on both machines :
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'. [CLIENT: 192.168.1.1]
I created a new user "Repuser" (admin)with the same password on both machines and configured the Agent proccess to run under that account ,now i get this error : Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. [CLIENT: 192.168.1.1]
Please note that :
· Mixed mode authentication IS ENABLED ON BOTH MACHINES · BOTH MACHINES CAN PING AND ACCESS EACH OTHER ,BOTH COMPLEETELY VISIBLE. · CONFIGURED ALIASES ON BOTH MACHINES. · Both configured to use Sa account . * I have NO DOMAIN
what does this mean?
It simply means that the SQL Server Agent process account is the one that€™s being authenticated to connect to the other machine and NOT the Sa account ,WHY?
Fairly new to SSIS.I have created a package in BIDS, and am trying to execute it so i can test/debug the flow and view the data in the data viewers. I continually get a logon failed for user... its the user id i am using to connect to my SourceConnection OLEDB. I have been struggling with this for a while now, and getting frustrated. I tried Windows Authentication also, still i get an error message logon failed for user......
I have tried all of the security settings, from Do not save sensitive to Encrypt all with password, entered the password, and then try to Execute Package from the solution explorer and still get error message. Thanks for your help!
Here is the error message
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80040E4D Description: "Login failed for user 'UserName'.".
I have a temptable with a list of user IDs that I want to drop so I created a script to do a cursor and run through my drop functions. The drops work by themselves and the ver check works with them but when I wrap them in the cursor all i get is an output for each user in the results window in ssms. why it's not setting the variable and instead outputting to results?
DECLARE @ver nvarchar(128); DECLARE @UserName nvarchar(50); DECLARE @UserD nvarchar(80); DECLARE @LoginD nvarchar(80); -- Initialize the variable. SET @ver = CAST(serverproperty('ProductVersion') AS nvarchar)
I am facing a problem which is based on the restrictions on the domain of the customer. After deplyoing the report on the server we are getting the following error message in the report manager after executing (clicking) a report link:
Logon failed.
Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070569)
I googled for that and it seems to be an authentication issue where some user / account is not granted to log on as service / locally, but the problems is better described than the solutions. Did anyone faced that problem so far ? Which account has to be granted what priviledges or permissions in Windows. We are using a SQL Server 2005 / Reporting Services 2005 running on the same machine whereas the virtual directories Reports and Reportserver are running in a separate Application Pool
I'm using MS Report Designer 2005 and have created a report that uses a cube, with a dimension set up to convert null values to unknown (nullProcessing = UnknownMember).
When I create a parameter using the checkbox in the graphical design mode's filter pane, Report Designer automatically sets the constrained flag, eg:
When running the report and selecting the 'Unkown' value from the parameter list, the error 'the restrictions imposed by the CONSTRAINED flag in the STRTOSET function were violated' occurrs.
How can I prevent the constrained flag from being used, or am I doing something wrong with converting null values to 'Unknown'?
My goal is to write a DR plan where i am restoring all user databases onto a diffrent server in a event of hardware failure. I was trying to figure out a way to extract DDL of user accounts and their permissions on all user databases so i can simplify my DR documentation.  This is the plan I came up with...to restore all system and user dbs on a different Physical SQLServer.
1. build named instance $PROD
2. restore master database
   - startup sqlserver in single user mode -m or DAC sqlcmd -S ServerName -U sa -P<xxx> –A    net stop MSSQLSERVER$PROD    net start MSSQLSERVER$PROD -m    - restore database master from disk e:master.bak with replace;    3. start sqlserver normally
4. stop SQLServer agent
5. restore msdb
-restore database msdb disk e:msdb.bak with replace;
I am trying to debug stored procedure using visual studio. I right click on connection and checked 'Allow SQL/CLR debugging' .. the store procedure is not local and is on sql server.
Whenever I tried to right click stored procedure and select step into store procedure> i get following error
"User 'Unknown user' could not execute stored procedure 'master.dbo.sp_enable_sql_debug' on SQL server XXXXX. Click Help for more information"
I am not sure what needs to be done on sql server side
We tried to search for sp_enable_sql_debug but I could not find this stored procedure under master.
Some web page I came accross says that "I must have an administratorial rights to debug" but I am not sure what does that mean?

I installed my asp.net 2.0 web application and sql express june editon on my windows 2003 server. When the application tries to reach the database i am getting the following error"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed."I can understand that it has something to do with user right but more than that I am pretty lost. Can anyone translate this error for me and give me some tips on what do to.I checked first the user running the sql express service and saw it was the NETWORK SERVICE user. I changed it to be the local system account but that did not make any difference. The application is running just fine on my local computer(Win XP sp2). This one has SQL express April edition though.
