Analysis :: Only One Fact Table Per Cube?
Nov 22, 2015
Is it correct to say that for each cube you can have only one Fact Table? I am having a funny dispute just now.
According my experience I never built cubes with more than one fact table, if I want take data from more than one table I write a view and I use it as Fact table...but a cube with two or three fact tables? Never tried..

Iam trying to build OLAP cubes in MS SQL Server 2000.But all the tutorials/docs mention about fact tables & dimensions.
Can I get some good tutorials on how to create fact tables to build OLAP cube ?
Also, which OLEDB provider to be used for MS SQL Server while creating OLAP Datasource ?
Thanks in advance & wishing u a prosperous new year too.

I am working on a model where I have a sales fact table. Each fact record has four different customer fields (ship- to, sold-to, payer, and bill-to customer). I have one customer dimension table that joins to the sales fact table four times (once for each of the customer fields above). When viewing the data in Excel, I would like to have four hierarchies (ship -to, sold-to, payer, and bill-to customer) within Customer.
Is there a way to build hierarchies within my Customer dimension based on the same Customer table? What I want is to view the data in Excel and see the Customer dimension. Within Customer, I want four hierarchies.

I am using a WriteBack Partition to receive data from various inputs and appends any new data that I add to the WB partition.
I am able to read the data immediately in the WB partition through a Fact partition query. This is working at this point as desired.
Eventually I want to move the data from the WB partition into Fact Partition. How can I do this, manually and through automation.

We have a sales fact table that has sales by customers, products, date etc. and dimension tables such as customers, products etc.
We built a multi-dimensional cube on top of these tables. how do we support queries like "show me top 10 products by sales amount and then show customers that didn't buy these products"?

I am modelling two fact tables of Actuals and Budget which are at different granularity, Actuals are at day, customer and product sub category level. Budgets are at month, Region and Product category level.
Month, Region and Product Category is present in Date, Region and Product Category dimension respectively. I have only three dimensions as Customer, Product and Date. Linking those dimensions to Actual Fact table is not an issue, what is the best way and options are there to link budget fact table to those three dimensions.

I am developing a BI solution on SQL Server 2008 R2 and how to handle multiple referances to the same dimension from a fact table!
Here is the scenario;
Fact_Contracts (# M)
ServiceProvider_CompanyID, Client_CompanyID, Amount_USD
Dim_Company( hundreds)
ID, CityID, ProfessionID, CompanyName
Dim_City
ID, CityName
Dim_Profession
ID, ProfessionName
As u can see there is two company references in my fact table, and the schema is in snowflake. My customer requirements state that the Contracts' amounts can be aggregated/filtered for/by, ServiceProviderCompany, its city/profession or ClientCompay, its city/profession.
First thing came in to my mind is to dublicate whole dimension structure (one for serviceproviders, one for clients), which i thought that there should be another way around?

I have only 1 denormalized table that is being used in a SSAS Tabular model(which is about 3GB). I am doing a POC to convert it into a SSAS Multidimensional and explore it.
Table1
-----------------------
StoreName
StoreDesc
ItemName
ItemDesc
Qty1
Cost1
Price1
Amount1
1st Question) I am seeing that there is no Primary Key(unique key) in the current denormalized table. (Tabular Model didnt require any primary key). But i think for Multidimensional the key is mandatory? Should i generate a composite key myself in a Named Query based on this table(in the DSV)?
2nd Question) What is the best way to design my Multidimensional Cube/Dimensions based on this single table?
Say if i comeup with a Composite Primary Key called (PK_ID) . Should i be splitting up my facts / dimensions in my DSV using Named Queries similar to below(Using the same PK for my dimension tables also?)
a) FactTable = Select PK_ID, Qty1,Cost1,Price1,Amount1 from Table1
b) StoreDim = Select PK_ID, StoreName,StoreDese from Table1
c) ItemDim = Select PK_ID, ItemName,ItemDesc from Table1
Would this work?

Say you have a fact table with a few columns that all reference the same key column in a dimension table, you want to write a view to return the information for those keys?
USE MyTestDB;
GO
SET NOCOUNT ON;
IF OBJECT_ID ('dbo.FactTemp' ,'U') IS NOT NULL
DROP TABLE dbo.FactTemp;
[Code] ....
I'm using very small data at the moment, and the query plan and statistics don't really say which way.

I have problems creating a cube with AMO.
I can add the cube to the database object and fill it with dimensions and a measuregroup (see code below).
If I call cube.Update() it says something like "Error in meta data manager. Cube has no measuregroups." (getting the message in german language)
The error in Microsoft.AnalysisServices.OperationException.Results.Messages is -1055653629
I can't find any documentation about this (or any other) error code in Microsoft documentation.
Here's my Code:
Cube newCube = database.Cubes.Add("MyCube","MyCube");
newCube.Language = 1031;
newCube.Collation = "Latin1_General_CI_AS";
CubeDimension dim = newCube.Dimensions.Add("dim1","dim1","dim1");
CubeAttribute attrib = dim.Attributes.Find("dim1Attr1");
[code]....

I have a cube that we are processing nightly via an Analysis Service Processing Task in SSIS. In order to increase the performance of the processing time, we elected to use a lot of rigid dimension attributes, and do a full process of everything in the SSIS task. The issue that I am having is that after that task completes, I need to go into Visual Studio to deploy the cube becuase we are unable to browse or use the cube. This issue seemed to start once we changed the SSIS Analysis Service Processing Task to do a full process on the dimensions, rather than an incremental.
I would expect that once development is done, and it is processed and deployed, that is it. My thinking is that the SSIS task should just update the already deployed cube,

Hello,
how can I connect to a cube (on a SQL 2005 server) and get (fact) data to process with SSIS? I looked at the toolbox but I see no applicable tool. It would be fine if somebody can provide a link to an article or example.
Thanks in advanced!

I have built a fact table and few dimension views in Datamart with the aim of creating a Cube.
On the Fact table I have added a CASE Statement with the following threshold for Premium due amounts:
CASE WHEN....
'Due_0-1_Month'
'Due_1-2_Month'
'Due_2-3_Month'
'Due_Over_3_Months'
'Overdue_0-1_Month'
'Overdue_1-3_Month'
'Overdue_3-6_Month'
'Overdue_Over_6_Months'
...END
I then created a Dimension to link this to:
CREATE VIEW...
Select 'Due_0-1_Month' as Ageing_Threshold
union all
Select 'Due_1-2_Month'
union all
Select 'Due_2-3_Month'
[Code] ....
I was successful in processing the cube, however the problem is everytime I drag the dimension on the columns field in Pivot tables the Thresholds start to break up the other amounts that I have on display like Acquisition Costs, Tax amounts. I am only interested in showing the breakdown of Premium amount measure by the Threshold dimension.
somehow 'Hide' or 'prevent' the Threshold dimension from breaking down the other measures on the Pivot and only breakdown the amounts for Premium?
how I should structure my tables in SQL or any MDX queries to resolve this.

I've got a dimension built from a fact (whatever that's called?) ... it's a date interval field, i.e. 0-5 weeks, 6-10 weeks 11+ weeks. How do I sort these members in the respective order? Looks like this currently:
The problem lies in the fact that I don't have any secondary attributes to order it by, i.e. it's not a physical dimension where I can use a key for the 3 members. I was hoping I wouldn't need to create a separate dimension to get round this.

I am modelling cube in SSAS. Cube has around 20 dimensions and 6 fact tables. Some of the dimensions are common among the fact tables. e.g. Time dimension. Fact_PNL has 3 date columns for those we have 3 role playing dimensions in the dimension usages.
Another fact table has 5 date columns for them as well we have separate role playing dimensions in dimension usage tab. We have a common dimension Company which is foreign key in all fact tables. We might need to combine the data from multiple facts to get final output.
Should i create 6 role playing dimension for each of the fact table or use the same dimension for all fact tables?
Role playing dimensions should be created when we have multiple columns pointing to the same dimension ?

I'm currently setting up a Tabular Model to do some research between several fact tables. In this example i have two fact tables (table 1 and table 2) which I've created a 1 to 1 relationship on phone number. Typically I create a relationship between these tables to find common data between the two. However, in this case I am trying to figure out the best way to model the data so that I can easily surface data from one table that does not exist in the other. I would liken this to a LEFT JOIN or a WHERE NOT EXISTS in SQL.
Table 1 has all of the data and Table 2 Only has a subset of the data from Table 1. What I'm trying to do here is display what attributes in Table 1 may play a part in records not existing in Table 2. What is the best way to model this?

I have a Fact table that contains several degenerate string values that I have pulled into a Fact Dimension.
When I browse the cube and cut one of the measures by an attribute from the Fact Dimension, I am getting incorrect data.
In other words, when I query the fact table directly via SQL and apply the same filters, I see the data I am expecting to see. But cube browse with same filters yields different results.
How can this happen since the fact dimension has a 1:1 relationship with the fact table.
I do have the Dimension Usage configured properly.
Is this an aggregation thing? Attribute key thing? What am I missing?

Hi,
I was talking to my boss to day and our report request are not very consistant. We always having someone coming back to change something in our report. We were thinking of useing something called the Cube Analysis. Then it give our employees the raw data for them to run any standard query for themself. We have folks that want a report one way, but then they changed their minds and we are creating yet another report 4 or 5 times. what are your thoughts about this type of database?

I'm making my first attempt at creating a cube using Analysis Services based on my exisiting datamart. Datasource, views, and dimensions have been defined. But comes deploying the cube, it's giving the error saying "A connection cannot be made. Ensure that the server is running." The Deploy Target server and database are the same where my datamart is. Or, maybe I don't know what I'm doing.
Would appreciate any suggestion for my enlightenment. Thanks

I setup Hiarchy in the dimentions of my cube, however when I go and look at it via proclarity, I can't see the hiearchy there.
I have one table that has:
Category
Subcategory
Partnumber
And I have the hiearchy set from Subcategory to partnumber.
Then I go into proclarity and limit the category by "my catname" and I still see the 8000 partnumbers in the list.
Any ideas?

I have a (hopefully typical) problem when it comes to cube design. Westore millions of product records every year, broken down bymonth/quarter. Each product can be assigned to various heirarchialclassification groups etc. The data in an OLTP DB occupies roughly100G for a typical year.We're looking at breaking this out into OLAP to provide faster accessto the data in various configurations and groupings. This is not aproblem, as this is the intended use for Analysis Services.The problem is that we apply projection factors on the product pricesand quantities. This would be ok if it only happened once, however,this happens every quarter (don't ask why). The projection factorschange 4 times a year, and they affect all historical product records.This presents a challenge because to aggregate the data into a usefulconfiguration in the cubes, you throw out the detail data, but thismeans throwing out the price and quantities which are needed to applythe projection.So if you have Product A at $10 and Product B at $20, and roll both upinto Category X, you'll have $30, but you'll lose the ability to applya projection factor of .5 to Product A and .78 to Product B. They'rerolled up.I don't want to regenerate the cubes every 3 months. That's absurd.But we can't live without the ability of projection theprices/quantities on a product level (detail level). So how can thisbe achieved when the other cubes are created at a higher level withless details and sums of the detail data?My initial guess is that we have to update the product data, and thenreaggregate all the other data that is built upon that product data.Is there any other way to apply math to the data on the way out?Thanks in advance!Regards,Zach

I know where the data files are etc, but what is the physical structure of a cube like on disk?
Logically we see the data as a star. Is the physical file akin to a star also? Or is a single file a measure group containing all the required member and measure data - thereby eliminating the need for physical join operators.
