How to correctly open Multidimensional Model in SSAS to Excel Power View Report? I am continuously getting this error message when open with Power View Report.
"Sorry, something went wrong while loading the model for the item or data source 'PC01-4300095 Sales Cube'. Verify that the connection information is correct and that you have permissions to access the data source."
We have a requirement to convert Tabular model to Multidimensional as few functionalists like actions does not support in tabular. Looking for list of things needs to take care to convert tabular solution to Multidimensional.
I have created one Multidimensional CUBE, while browsing(Analyze in Excel) it in Excel, I am unable to create TimeLine Slicer.It is giving me following error as: "We can't create Timeline for this report because it doesn't have field formatted as Date".
I have Dim_Date having Date as a column of Day level granularity. In PowerPivot, we do mark Dim_Date Table as a 'Date Table'.In the same way, do we have to set anything here so that Excel will come to the Date format for TimeLine Slicer?
I need to create a data model for powerview report but I don't have data right now. The data will be loaded later after I create the report. What technique should I use??

I want to use this as the data from which to build a report model. As linked servers don't show up in the Data Source View wizard, I created a view in SQL Server:
create view MyExcel as select * from XL_SPS_1...Sheet1$
Okay, great, now the view shows up in the DSV wizard and I can create the data source view. However, when I create a new report model based on this data source view, the Report Model Wizard tells me at "Create entities for all tables" that I've got an error when it processes dbo_MyExcel that "Table does not have a primary key."
I assume this is where the identifying attributes for the entities in the report model are taken from, so I really can't go further. Does anyone have an idea as to how to add a primary key to a linked server (Excel) in SQL 2005? Can this be done? Other than importing spreadsheet data to a SQL table, how can I get around this?
I have only 1 denormalized table that is being used in a SSAS Tabular model(which is about 3GB). I am doing a POC to convert it into a SSAS Multidimensional and explore it.
1st Question) I am seeing that there is no Primary Key(unique key) in the current denormalized table. (Tabular Model didnt require any primary key). But i think for Multidimensional the key is mandatory? Should i generate a composite key myself in a Named Query based on this table(in the DSV)?
2nd Question) What is the best way to design my Multidimensional Cube/Dimensions based on this single table?
Say if i comeup with a Composite Primary Key called (PK_ID) . Should i be splitting up my facts / dimensions in my DSV using Named Queries similar to below(Using the same PK for my dimension tables also?)

I am trying to implement data masking based on user login and not sure why this is not working. I have the dimensions DimBrand, DimProduct and DimUser. I should mask the BrandCode with 'XXXX' nothing but in the report all the BrandCode should appear but few of the code will be masked if the user is not belongs to that group. I have a fact table FactProduct in this. In the cube I created all these 3 dimensions and the fact table. I created a new dimension DimBrandMask and I separated the code over there with a relationship with the actual DimBrand dimension. In the cube a reference relationship is set up with the measure group. Created a role with read access.
In the dimension data tab of role I put the below MDX to allowed set.
Is it possible to have Analysis Services in both modes or are they mutually exclusive?I have a machine setup with Multidimensional AS and would like to know if it's possible to add a Service in Tabular mode.

When I try to open the PowerPivot sheet form Power Pivot Gallery and click on any filter I receive following message: An error occurred during an attempt to establish a connection to the external data source. The following connections failed to refresh: PowerPivot Data.
I'm trying to make a SSAS default instance available over the internet. I've opened the 2383 port on the server, and I can access it through SSMS using the local ip. I've also attempted to open and map the port on my router, and if I go to [URL] .... it says it's open. If I turn off the server, it says the port is closed, so I think it's routing correctly to the server.
However, when I plug my internet IP address into SSMS, it says
"A connection cannot be made. Ensure that the server is running. No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it IPADDRESS:2383"
It says the same thing if I give it a random, closed port.
I am connecting to SSAS cube from Excel and I have date dimension with 4 fields (I have others but I don't use it for this case). I created 4 fields in order to test all possible scenarios that I could think of:
DateKey: - Type: System.Integer - Value: yyyyMMdd Date: - Type: System.DateTime DateStr0: - Type: System.String - Value: dd/MM/yyyy (note: I am not using US culture) - Example: 01/11/2015 DateStr1: - Type: System.String - Value: %d/%M/yyyy (note: I am not using US culture) - Example: 1/11/2015
Filtering on date is working fine:
Initially, in excel, filtering on date was not working. But after changing dimensional type to time, and setting DataType to Date, as mentioned in [URL] filter is working fine as you can see in the picture.Grouping on date is not working:
I have hierarchy in my Date dimension and I can group based on hierarchy, no problem. But user is used to pre-build grouping function of excel, and he wants to use that. Pre-build functions of Excel, Group and ungroup seems to be available as you can see in following picture:
But when user clicks 'Group', excel groups it as if it is a string, and that is the problem. User wants to group using pre-build grouping function available in Pivot table. I also find out that Power Pivot Table does not support this excel grouping functionality. And if I understood well, this pre-build grouping functionality of excel, needs to do calculation at run time, and that is not viable solution if you have millions of rows. So Power pivot table does not support pre-build grouping functionality of excel and hence we need to use dimension hierarchy to do the grouping. But I am not using Power Pivot table, I am using simple Pivot Table. So I expect grouping functionality to be working fine. Then I tried to do simple test. I created a simple data source in excel itself. And use it as source of my Pivot table. Then grouping is working fine. The only difference that I can see is (When double click the Measure value in Excel),For date values of my simple test, excel consider them as 'Date'.
For date values of my data coming from cube, excel consider them as 'General'
2.1. But value here is same as it was in simple test.
2.2. 'Date Filter' works just fine.
2.3. If I just select this cell and unselect it, then excel change type to 'Date' though for that cell.
2.4. I have created 4 different types of fields in my date dimension thinking that values of attribute of my dimension might be the problem, but excel consider 'General' for all of them.
2.5 This value (that can be seen when double clicking on measure) comes from 'Name Column' of the attribute. And the DataType defined is WChar. And I thought that might be the reason of issue. And I changed it to 'Date'. But SSAS does not allow it to change to 'Date' giving error : The 'Date' data type is not allowed for the 'NameColumn' property; 'WChar' should be used.
So, I don't know, what is the puzzle piece that I am missing.
1. Date filter works, group does not work
2. Excel consider it as 'General' string.
3. SSAS does not allow to change 'NameColumn' to Date.
I have an excel sheet that has a bunch of columns. Some of these columns have static data but there are a few of the columns that retrieve data by making calls to servers and returning values that populate these columns. Usually about 30 mins before the columns are populated.
I then need to to load the excel sheet into a table.
I was wondering if there was anyway by which we can make the connection to the excel sheet and then force a delay of about 30 mins before it starts retriving the data?
Is this possible in ssis? Or can I achieve it by some other means?
I have a Tabular model, it has 8 tables , 7 of the tables process in 3 mins, but the main table is 22.3gb in size//I am processing the table on a 64 bit pc with 8 gb ram to the local instance from a Production server//At this rate it will take days to process the Main table 22.3gb, the main table was running off a view but I have inserted the data into TableA and updated the model///Only other optimization process I can think of is copying TableA to my local machine but the performance to the Server on the network is not an issue.I am just process the main table for the last 4 hrs and it is only at 11.7 mill records out of 124 mill total @ this rate it will take 44 hours
I've built a fairly straight forward report in RS that looks normal in preview mode and in PDF format with out any issues.But when I export it to Excel report header is not appearing in each page.Any ideas as to why this is occurring?thanks in advance,Ramesh KS
I am thinking of a possible design where the cube will never go offline.
Usually when I do some code changes on my cube the cube goes offline and I need to Full Process it again to get it back .
However , in cases where the cube is extremely critical for the business users , it would be great if I can deliver a solution where the cube never goes down.
I have been looking at implementing a tabular model based on an OLTP database that's not dimensional. I know that this is possible but during my proof of concept I have encountered numerous problems ...
The things that I have run into are: After setting up the relationships I have found that measures filter context don't propagate along the relationships as I would expect. if the measure is coming from a target table and not a source then an ALL member is returned ( as in multi dimensional when a dimension isn't related to a measure group). Given the lay out of an OLTP database this will be hard to avoid.
One thing I have done to try an mitigate the above problem is to combine the tables used for measures in a view and using that in the source to connect to the rest of the tables. however due to the tables being of different grains this has then created duplication in some of the keys and measures. so the keys cant be used in relationships and the measures aren't accurate.
Are these things other people have come across? or should I give up the ghost and just recommend using dimensional models for the source? is tabular just geared towards a DW the same as multidimensional?
I created a model in Visual Studio 2012 and when I process the model, most tables (the ones that should) process 77,546 records and that is reflected in VS.
However, when I deploy the model to the server it is only deploying 76,500 records for those tables.
Where those 1,046 records went to? Is there a setting that limits the records to be deployed? My base tables in the Data Mart have 77,546 records, just as in my Visual Studio model.
I try to generate ad hoc reporting model for analysis services cube in reporting services. in Management Studio I connected to reporting services, defined a data source to the analysis services database. But If i try to generate model i get the error: "While connection with a data source a mistake has appeared, or the query is invalid for the data source. (rsCannotPrepareQuery)(Report Services SOAP Proxy Source)"
I get the following error while processing a SSAS tabular model (2014) on a new server.The SSAS service on this server is running under a login which has access to the SQL server data sources. I tried changing the provider to OLEDB from SQLCLNI11 in the connection string but that doesn't work too. The error message isn't useful to debug further.
The cube processing succeeds on a different server. I scripted out the cube DB and ran it on the new server and am trying to process full but it fails with the following error.
Error Message: The operation failed because the source database does not exist, the source table does not exist, or because you do not have access to the data source.
More Details: OLE DB or ODBC error: A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.

I have 2 Excel sheets ( Sheet1 and Summary) in an excel output file. Sheet1 is created and loaded with data fine. Summary sheet is getting the following error: Error: 0xC0202009 at Write Counts and Percentages to Summary Sheet, Excel Destination [337]: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E37.
Error: 0xC02020E8 at Write Counts and Percentages to Summary Sheet, Excel Destination [337]: Opening a rowset for "Summary" failed. Check that the object exists in the database.
I do have an execute SQL task to create the summary sheet before the data flow task. The execute SQL task has CREATE TABLE `Summary` ( `Counts_and_Percentages` LongText )
Please advise on what I can do to troubleshoot/correct the error. Thanks

Our company is doing some basic research into using analysis services as a solution for our customers. I've taken our database and built an analysis services project in BI Studio and deployed it to Analysis Services on my local machine I connect to Reporting Services in Management Studio, create a folder for the cube, give my Windows user acct. Content Manager permission, create the Data Source (conn string = "Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Data Source=(local)SQLServer2k5;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=STI-PDB" -- copied from the Analysis Services project in BI Studio), and go to "Generate Model". What I get is an rsModelGenerationError, sub [Create Perspective From Cubes] with a connection issue at the base:
Either the user, <computername>Thomas, does not have access to the STI-PDB Database, or the database does not exist. () (Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services)
Now, in the Database Engine, my Windows account has the db_owner database role for STI-PDB and it's default schema is dbo, which all the objects are created under. What am I missing here?
We are working on implementing DAX formula(s) on our tabular model (SSAS 2012). When we tried to deploy the solution, deployment wizard giving us then below error:The given key was not present in the dictionary...I checked all the formula(s) that we recently implemented and all looks fine.
I'm working on a Tabular model at my job since the users have a requirement to query against a live data source. I've been looking online for clients that issue DAX as opposed to MDX to the model, but besides SSRS and Power View, I could not find anything else. Any other client side interfaces to a DirectQuery Tabular model?
I built my first tabular model and see that my fact tables are also appearing as dimensions. In Multi dimensional mode i could choose which are the dimensions. How do i do that in tabular model.
