Analysis :: Tabular Not Possible To Use Order As Per Database In Pivot Table

Aug 25, 2015

We couldn't find a way to show row/column members in the order as in the database. The Pivot table always applies alphabetical sorting:

Is there really no way to show items as per database order?

Analysis :: SSAS Tabular Small Database Fails In Excel Pivot Table Because Of Memory Shortage?

May 7, 2015

I have a very small SSAS database with around 35 Mb. I opened it on Excel 32 bits and started dragging fields to a pivot table and it started failing with memory errors. The behavior on the SSAS server was that memory started growing very fast until 8 GB (vm memory total) and then the error is reported in excel.

What might be the issue in such a small database? I would understand in a big database, but not on this one.

Analysis :: Order Of Rows In Tabular Table Not In Same Order Data Was Retrieved?

May 19, 2015

I never paid much attention to this before but I noticed this today in a new table I was creating.

For tables defined in the tabular model the table properties have something like SELECT Blah FROM TableName ORDER BY Blah Then in the tabular model the table's data is in the same order it was ordered by in the data source for the table.

I have a date table I setup and I noticed it is NOT respecting the sort order.

I have it sorted by DateID which sorts with the oldest date first and newest date as last row. However, the table that is imported and stored in the data model is not in that order.

I can of course manually sort the rows in BIDS/DataTools, but I find this discrepancy odd.

Would this have negative impacts on the EARLIER function for example if the data rows are not in the order specified?

Analysis :: Tabular DAX / Calculate SUM Against Unrelated Table?

Nov 4, 2015

I tried using the page below but wasn't able to quite properly adapt it to my scenario

[URL]

I have two UNRELATED (can't be related for reasons outside the scope of this, other relationships already exist) tables.

Each table does, however, contain a WorkerID:

WorkerTimesheets:

WorkerID, HoursLogged, Date
3,10,2015-05-05
3,6,2015-05-10
4,8,2015-05-01

Then the unrelated table "ConstructionSites"

SiteID, SiteManagerID, SiteOpen,SiteClosed
A5, 3,2015-01-01,BLANK

What I want to do is be able to show a measure that SUMS the number of hours logged by anyone who is a SiteManager from the ConstructionSites table.

I wanted to do a SUMX of WorkerTimesheets against HoursLogged, but FILTER against WorkerTimesheets[WorkerID] = ConstructionSites[SiteManagerID] so only workers who are also SiteManager would be counted. However, I can't seem to get that to resolve it always throws an error along the lines that it can't determine context.

Analysis :: Excel 2013 Pivot-table / Grouping On Date That Comes From Analysis Service 2008?

Nov 24, 2015

I am using

SSAS: version 2008
Excel: version 2013

I am connecting to SSAS cube from Excel and I have date dimension with 4 fields (I have others but I don't use it for this case). I created 4 fields in order to test all possible scenarios that I could think of:

DateKey:
    - Type: System.Integer
    - Value: yyyyMMdd
Date:
    - Type: System.DateTime
DateStr0:
    - Type: System.String
    - Value: dd/MM/yyyy (note: I am not using US culture)
    - Example: 01/11/2015
DateStr1:
    - Type: System.String
    - Value: %d/%M/yyyy (note: I am not using US culture)
    - Example: 1/11/2015

Filtering on date is working fine:

Initially, in excel, filtering on date was not working. But after changing dimensional type to time, and setting  DataType to Date, as mentioned in [URL] filter is working fine as you can see in the picture.Grouping on date is not working:

I have hierarchy in my Date dimension and I can group based on hierarchy, no problem. But user is used to pre-build grouping function of excel, and he wants to use that. Pre-build functions of Excel, Group and ungroup seems to be available as you can see in following picture:

But when user clicks 'Group', excel groups it as if it is a string, and that is the problem. User wants to group using pre-build grouping function available in Pivot table. I also find out that Power Pivot Table does not support this excel grouping functionality. And if I understood well, this pre-build grouping functionality of excel, needs to do calculation at run time, and that is not viable solution if you have millions of rows. So Power pivot table does not support pre-build grouping functionality of excel and hence we need to use dimension hierarchy to do the grouping. But I am not using Power Pivot table, I am using simple Pivot Table. So I expect grouping functionality to be working fine. Then I tried to do simple test. I created a simple data source in excel itself. And use it as source of my Pivot table. Then grouping is working fine. The only difference that I can see is (When double click the Measure value in Excel),For date values of my simple test, excel consider them as 'Date'.

For date values of my data coming from cube, excel consider them as 'General'

2.1. But value here is same as it was in simple test.

2.2. 'Date Filter' works just fine.

2.3. If I just select this cell and unselect it, then excel change type to 'Date' though for that cell.

2.4. I have created 4 different types of fields in my date dimension thinking that values of attribute of my dimension might be the problem, but excel consider 'General' for all of them.

2.5 This value (that can be seen when double clicking on measure) comes from 'Name Column' of the attribute. And the DataType defined is WChar. And I thought that might be the reason of issue. And I changed it to 'Date'. But SSAS does not allow it to change to 'Date' giving error : The 'Date' data type is not allowed for the 'NameColumn' property; 'WChar' should be used.

So, I don't know, what is the puzzle piece that I am missing.

1. Date filter works, group does not work

2. Excel consider it as 'General' string.

3. SSAS does not allow to change 'NameColumn' to Date.

Drillthrough An Excel Pivot Table Into Analysis Services ?

Oct 5, 2005

Wonder if you could help me ?

I have set up a cube running under MSSQL Server 2000 Analysis services and have created reports in Excel 2002 using pivot tables and linking into the cube as an external data source.

The pivottable works fine and I can slice / dice as usual, the only thing that doesnt work is the drill through into AS. I receive and error message saying "Cannot show detail data for that selection...".

Now I know that the drill through works, as when I create a report using the Analsyis Services Excel Add Inthe drill through works fine, its just how do I get it working using the pivot tables ?

fyi - the reason I dont want to use the Analsyis Services Excel Add In for all the reports is because I have to deploy this to XX number of users, who wont have admin rights on their machines etc etc....

Is there any VB that I could use to perform this drill through and return the results.....or easier ??

Thanks very much

Error Grouping In Pivot Table With OLEDB For Analysis Servises 9.0

Mar 21, 2006

Hi all.

I moved my OLAP DB to SQL Server 2005, installed Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Analysis Services 9.0 on the client and keep creating Pivot Tables in Excel until...

Grouping - when I try to group couple of members (or even 1 for that matter) I'm getting :

"Intrnal error: An unexpected error occurred (file"mdinfo.cpp", line 3335 function "MDInfo::Init")."

The only reference to mdinfo error I found in OLAP newsgroup where a guy was getting it trying to process the cube. My cube is processed (obviuosly). So, anybody knows what has changed with respect to grouping in PTS?

Power Pivot :: DAX - ORDER BY COUNTROWS Does Not Work Within Summarized Table

Nov 9, 2015

I'm using a Contoso database running on Power BI Desktop (Version: 2.28.4190.122). The databiase is actually a Contoso.pbix file provided for a book [URL]. I have a DAX query that summarizes a Products table by Product[Manufacturer] and gives a count of products by the manufacturers. My Problem is that the ORDER BY COUNTROWS doesn't work.

why the order by clause doesn't work when I'm confined to the Products table while the order by clause does work when I start with the Sales table? The numbers are correct in both queries.

This query doesn't sort

EVALUATE
SUMMARIZE (
Product,
Product[Manufacturer],
"ProductCount", COUNTROWS ( Product )
)
ORDER BY COUNTROWS ( Product ) DESC

This query does sort correctly

EVALUATE
SUMMARIZE (
Sales,
Product[Manufacturer],
"ProductCount", COUNTROWS ( RELATEDTABLE ( Product ) )
)
ORDER BY COUNTROWS ( RELATEDTABLE ( Product ) ) DESC

Analysis :: How To Filter Tabular Perspectives

Oct 5, 2015

I have been living in the T-SQL world for years, and am working on my first Tabular model.

I have a fact table that I would like to use for many reports. My idea is that I would use Perspectives in the tabular model to pull in the columns that I need for each purpose. In some cases, I also need to filter out some rows. Is there a way to filter perspectives? The only solution I am coming up with is to create views in SQL Server and import the fact table multiple times for each purpose. That doesn't seem very efficient.

Analysis :: Tabular Refreshed Automatically?

My boss and I attended the SQL conference in Vegas a few years ago. He remembers a session on tabular where the presenter said when the underlying table that tabular is built on changes, it automatically refreshes the tabular db.  Now that we're working on a tabular project I'm looking around for this information and don't find anything like that happens.  From what I can see, the refresh either has to be scheduled from a task, or manually refreshed by right-clicking the db and selecting "process db".  He said the session presenter was a Microsoft Program Manager too.  Is there any truth to what he remembers?

Power Pivot :: Define SSAS Tabular Measures In Batch?

Nov 19, 2015

We have an Excel PowerPivot model that we are trying to move to SSAS Tabular. The model is complex and has over 300 measures. To group these in Excel, we pasted in dummy tables and defined the measures in logical groupings. Now when we are migrating to SSAS, we have to delete the pasted tables --that have ALL of the measures, in order for the import to work successfully.

How to migrate the model? We have a nice report of all of the measures from DAX Studio, but I am not looking forward to manually re-entering 300 measures through the user interface. Is there any way to define measures in batch? Or is there a way to change the pasted table to a file so the import will work? Will the import work in SSAS 2016?

Analysis :: Creating Tabular Model On OLTP

Nov 4, 2015

I have been looking at implementing a tabular model based on an OLTP database that's not dimensional. I know that this is possible but during my proof of concept I have encountered numerous problems ...

The things that I have run into are: After setting up the relationships I have found that measures filter context don't propagate along the relationships as I would expect. if the measure is coming from a target table and not a source then an ALL member is returned ( as in multi dimensional when a dimension isn't related to a measure group). Given the lay out of an OLTP database this will be hard to avoid.

One thing I have done to try an mitigate the above problem is to combine the tables used for measures in a view and using that in the source to connect to the rest of the tables. however due to the tables being of different grains this has then created duplication in some of the keys and measures. so the keys cant be used in relationships and the measures aren't accurate.

Are these things other people have come across? or should I give up the ghost and just recommend using dimensional models for the source? is tabular just geared towards a DW the same as multidimensional?

Analysis :: Server Tabular And Power BI In Azure?

May 12, 2015

getting a complete Microsoft DW/BI (Tabular), Power BI and Office enviroment up running. I am a (Microsoft) DW/BI manager and want to learn about the latest Microsoft DW/BI (SQL Server Tabular) and Power BI (Power Pivot, Power View, ...). To save time & access from anywhere, I thought I could use Windows Azure but quickly got lost in the Azure preview and market place! I even contacted the Windows Azure team and that didn't clarify things.

So, how to get a SQL Server (2014) environment with all DW/BI (SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, Data Mining) technologies together with Power BI and Excel working? If so, how to get started. If this is not possible on Azure and it has to be done on Window, what do I need to install for the Power BI stuff (to work with Tabular)? I already have SQL Server 2014 and Office Pro Plus installed natively on my Windows machine.

Power Pivot :: Connecting To A Tabular Model - Combining With Excel Calculations

Jun 16, 2015

how to combine measures and fields coming from an analytical model (tabular) along with some Excel calculations. Basically I want to provide users with a simple report (to be displayed in SharePoint Excel services) containing charts and slicers. The data comes from a tabular model, and most of the calculations are in the model as well. However there is some little tweaking that must be done. For example I might need additional calculated columns, but I don't feel the need to modify the tabular model for that. I was wondering if I could do this within Excel as well -- but without having to bring all the data through a pivot table, then manipulate it and then show it on the report. So to be clear I do not want any pivot tables lying around, even if on a hidden sheet.

I noticed that when selecting a pivot chart in Excel, at the ribbon menu under "PIVOTCHART TOOLS"/"ANALYSE" there is a group of buttons named "Calculations". One of them is named OLAP Tools. Is it fair to assume that these options will allow me to create new measures at the Excel side, without affecting my tabular model?

However, when I deploy the model to the server it is only deploying 76,500 records for those tables.

Where those 1,046 records went to? Is there a setting that limits the records to be deployed? My base tables in the Data Mart have 77,546 records, just as in my Visual Studio model.
