Power Point :: Macro Enabled PowerPivot Data Model

Aug 31, 2015

When we deploy any PowerPivot Data Model to SharePoint 2013, we get the following options-

1. Create New PowerPivot Report
2. Create New PowerView Report
3. Schedule Data Refresh

These options work fine as long as we deploy a normal Excel Data Model file like .xlsx . However, When I deploy Data Model with some VBA code (Macros, VB functions) contained within it i.e. Macro Enabled file - .xlsm,the above options didn't work. I got following error while creating a New PowerView report as  It says that your Excel has unsupported features like Macro function. Can't we create a new PowerPivot/PowerView report with Macro Enabled Data Model? Is this not supported in SharePoint 2013?

Import Partial Sql Table From Excel Spreadsheet

I tried using oledb connection to read the spreadsheet and sqlbulkcopy to import into sql table. There was no error, but the data wasn't imported into sql. Does anyone have any suggestion what I did wrong or what is the right way of doing this? Thanks a lot. Mia

Define Default For Date Report Parameter / Analysis Services

May 30, 2007

I have a report which will one day display some data from an analysis services cube. my first step is to create a drop down parameter enabling the user to choose the date. I'd like to display only dates that have data, and I'd like it to default to today.

So I've created a dataset that will be the datasource for the dropdown displaying the available non-empty dates, which works fine.

SELECT measures.turnover ON COLUMNS,

nonempty([TBL DIM DATE].[DATE_ONLY].[DATE_ONLY].ALLMEMBERS ) ON ROWS

FROM [Itdev1 Hk]

I've also set the report parameter up to be a queried paramter, and to use the above dataset as it source, with [DATE_ONLY] displayed. and [DATE_ONLY] as the value.

Now, how do I get it to default to the last valid member in the list?

Usually when I do some code changes on my cube the cube goes offline and I need to Full Process it again to get it back .

However , in cases where the cube is extremely critical for the business users , it would be great if I can deliver a solution where the cube never goes down.

Analysis :: Creating Tabular Model On OLTP

Nov 4, 2015

I have been looking at implementing a tabular model based on an OLTP database that's not dimensional. I know that this is possible but during my proof of concept I have encountered numerous problems ...

The things that I have run into are: After setting up the relationships I have found that measures filter context don't propagate along the relationships as I would expect. if the measure is coming from a target table and not a source then an ALL member is returned ( as in multi dimensional when a dimension isn't related to a measure group). Given the lay out of an OLTP database this will be hard to avoid.

One thing I have done to try an mitigate the above problem is to combine the tables used for measures in a view and using that in the source to connect to the rest of the tables. however due to the tables being of different grains this has then created duplication in some of the keys and measures. so the keys cant be used in relationships and the measures aren't accurate.

Are these things other people have come across? or should I give up the ghost and just recommend using dimensional models for the source? is tabular just geared towards a DW the same as multidimensional?

Analysis :: Deploying Tabular Model Drops Records

Oct 22, 2015

I'm using SQL Server 2012 Bi edition.

I created a model in Visual Studio 2012 and when I process the model, most tables (the ones that should) process 77,546 records and that is reflected in VS.

However, when I deploy the model to the server it is only deploying 76,500 records for those tables.

Where those 1,046 records went to? Is there a setting that limits the records to be deployed? My base tables in the Data Mart have 77,546 records, just as in my Visual Studio model.

Analysis :: SSAS Tabular Model Processing Error

Nov 4, 2015

I get the following error while processing a SSAS tabular model (2014) on a new server. The SSAS service on this server is running under a login which has access to the SQL server data sources. I tried changing the provider to OLEDB from SQLCLNI11 in the connection string but that doesn't work too. The cube processing succeeds on a different server. I scripted out the cube DB and ran it on the new server and am trying to process full but it fails with the following error.

Unable To Generate Model Off Of An Analysis Services Data Source

Feb 21, 2007

Hello,

Our company is doing some basic research into using analysis services as a solution for our customers. I've taken our database and built an analysis services project in BI Studio and deployed it to Analysis Services on my local machine I connect to Reporting Services in Management Studio, create a folder for the cube, give my Windows user acct. Content Manager permission, create the Data Source (conn string = "Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Data Source=(local)SQLServer2k5;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=STI-PDB" -- copied from the Analysis Services project in BI Studio), and go to "Generate Model". What I get is an rsModelGenerationError, sub [Create Perspective From Cubes] with a connection issue at the base:

Either the user, <computername>Thomas, does not have access to the STI-PDB Database, or the database does not exist. () (Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services)

Now, in the Database Engine, my Windows account has the db_owner database role for STI-PDB and it's default schema is dbo, which all the objects are created under. What am I missing here?

Power Pivot :: Building A Model Based On Multinational Model With Different Languages?

Oct 19, 2015

I need to develop a language specific dwh, meaning that descriptions of products are available from a SAP system in multiple languages. English is the most important language and that is the standard. But, there are also requirements of countries that wants productdescriptions in their language.

Productnr Productdesc Language
1            product       EN
1            produkt       DE

One option is to column the descriptions, but that is not very elegantly. I was thinking of using bridge tables to model this but you have to always select a language in a filter (I think)..

I'm thinking of a technical solution, such that when a user logs on, the language is determined and a view determines whether to pick a certain product table specific for a certain language. But then I don't have the opportunity to interchange the different language specific fields in a report (or in my case PowerPivot).

Can We Pause Log Shipping, Bring Primary Db To Simple Recovery Model And Then Back To Full R Model?

Apr 25, 2008

We have the following scenario,

We have our Production server having database on which Few DTS packages execute every night. Most of them have Bulk Insert stored procedures running.

SO we have to set Recovery Model of the database to simple for that period of time, otherwise it will blow up our logs.

Is there any way we can set up log shipping between our production and standby server, but pause it for some time, set recovery model of primary db to simple, execute DTS Bulk Insert Jobs, Bring it Back to Full recovery Model AND finally bring back Log SHipping.

It it possible, if yes how can we achieve this.

If not what could be another DR solution in this scenario.

Thanks Much

Getting Partial Recordset.

Apr 19, 1999

I'm an SQL novice, but I know this must be a common problem.

I'm trying to select a recordset (using ASP), but I know I only want part of the recordset, and am not sure how to limit it ahead of time.

For example, the query will return about 500 rows, but I know I only want to use a small section of these records.
I want to give the user the ability to navigate through small sections of these 500 rows without having to get all rows all the time.
I know ahead of time which rows to get, but have no idea how to limit the recordset before I get it (there is no fields in the database to help).

This is what I'm doing now. "select * from xyz where id=xxx order by date desc;" I know I only want the first 10, or 10-20, or 400-410.
The way I'm doing it now, I'm getting the whole recordset each time, doing a "rs.move x" where x is where I want to start.
This is really a waste of network traffic and memory since my SQL server is on a different machine as the web server running ASP.

How do I do this?

Please email me if you could at pmt@vantagenet.com
