Any Distributed Data Failure

Jul 2, 2006

Scenario:
I have one windows server 2003 and 2 windows XP clients on one machine by virtual pc.
All pings to each other.
The 2 windows XP clients are joining a domain in the server.
They have administrator accounts and administrative privilages on each other.

On each windows there is SQL2000 with SP3 using windows authentication.
Each MSSQLServer and other SQL Services log in by the administrator domain account and has the domain account of the other windows in sysadmin role.

Both XP SQL Servers are linked to each other.

MSDTC is running on all servers with allowing every available option by Services Components.

Firewalls are off in all servers.

Although, neither distributed transactions work giving this error:
"Server: Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Line 7
The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction."

Also Snapshot agent in replication cannot start.

My Question is: Is there something to do with RPC and how?
Please help...

Thanks.

Distributed Transaction Failure

May 10, 2006

I’m attempting to insert the result set from a remote query into a local table and I’m getting the following error:

Msg 8501, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
MSDTC on server 'REMOTESVR' is unavailable.
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'SQLOLEDB' ITransactionJoin::JoinTransaction returned 0x8004d01c].
Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction.

MSDTC is running on both servers. Has anyone ever seen this or have any insight into the cause?

The code that I’m trying to run is:

create table msver
(
[Index] int,
[Name] varchar(30),
Internal_Value varchar(20),
Character_Value varchar(512)
)

insert into msver
exec ('exec [REMOTESVR].master.dbo.xp_msver')

Note that the remote query works fine.

Thanks!

Communication Link Failure Error When Running A Distributed Query

Apr 12, 2007

Hello

TestMachine1 runs SQL2005 SP2 and has as linked server myRemoteServer (SQL2000) server. I run an stored procedure in TestMachine1 which inserts about 20,000 rows to a table in myRemoteServer and brings back a similar quantity of rows. This stored procedures take about 1.5min to complete, but no error appears.

When running the same stored procedure in TestMachine2 (also SQL2005SP2), the following error appears after about 1 minute of execution (not the exact text):

SQLNCli. TCP Provider: network name is no longer available - communication link failure.

Please note that this stored procedure worked before on TestMachine2 (but with less than 10,000 rows) and that connectivity is proven among TestMachine1 and myRemoteServer, since I can execute "select * from synonym_MyRemoteTable" with no problems at all in the TestMachine2's Management Studio.

TestMachine1 and TestMachine2 have Windows XP Professional SP2; myRemoteServer has Windows 2003 and SQL Server 2000 SP4.

Can you please help me to avoid this error?

Distributed Data Synchronization - Comparing Timestamp

Mar 17, 2006

Hello,

I am designing a distributed application where a central SQL Server 2005 database will need to be synchronized with remote SQLExpress databases via a WebService. Data can be edited at the cental db (by our connected applications) or on the local SQLExpress dbs running on the users machines (by this disconnected application).

Now, how can I use the timestamp column to determine the most recent update. The most recent update to me is not the user that most recently invoked the syncing WebService, but the most recent time when the change was made to the data locally vs the change time at the central server. Because a user could make a change on his laptop on Monday but not synchronize it till Friday. I dont want the Mon data to overwrite data of Tues-Fri being overwritten simply based on assumption that a late sync is infact the most recent change.

The initial data will be downloaded to the local SQLExpress db via the WebService so the timestamp data in the table will come along with it.

When a user modifies data in this disconnected SQLExpress db, can that be compared to modifications on the central db using timestamps to determine if the users data being synced is older or newer than the data on the server? I understand timestamps are incremental values, but are they still sensitive to the users timezone since the central server will be a diff timezone then the user.

The Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) Has Cancelled The Distributed Transaction.

Feb 29, 2008

We have a test db, a staging db and a live db. I have a stored procedure that runs fine on test and staging, but throws the following error on live.

The Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) has cancelled the distributed transaction.

The stored procedure uses linked servers and a transaction.
We're using the following transaction code in the stored procedure

BEGIN

BEGIN TRANSACTION

BEGIN TRY

---
procedure stuff here
---
COMMIT TRANSACTION
END TRY

BEGIN CATCH

DECLARE @ErrorSeverity INT, @ErrorNumber INT, @ErrorMessage NVARCHAR(4000), @ErrorState INT

SET @ErrorSeverity = ERROR_SEVERITY()

SET @ErrorNumber = ERROR_NUMBER()

SET @ErrorMessage = ERROR_MESSAGE()

SET @ErrorState = ERROR_STATE()

IF @ErrorState = 0

SET @ErrorState = 1

RAISERROR ('ERROR OCCURED:%d', @ErrorSeverity, @ErrorState, @ErrorNumber)

IF XACT_STATE() < 0

ROLLBACK TRANSACTION

END CATCH

END

I found the following link which seems to be the problem we're experiencinghttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/937517

The link includes a workaround which is the following:
"To prevent the SQLNCLI provider from sending an attention signal to the server, use the SQLNCLI provider to consume fully any rowsets that the OLE DB consumer creates. "

How do I use the SQLNCLI provider to fully consume any rowsets?

This is my last resort. I hope you can help me.

Connection Failure - Data Corruption?

Jan 18, 2006

Hi,

Yesterday, one of the computers on the network of our SQL server experienced a connection failure while using two specific jobs in a table containing assignments for jobs. The data interaction occurs from a Data Access Page, and from what I've learned, the nature of a DAP is such that the client not only connects to the web server but actually also establishes a direct connection to the SQL Server (we use a backend of MS SQL Server 2003). The data is still inside the tables, but on the Data Access Page, any data that was opened during the connection failure does not show up anymore from any computer.

My guess is that there was corruption of some sort on another layer beneath the actual data layer that cannot be accessed directly or viewed. To remedy this problem, I am going to try to recreate all affected records and rebuild all table ID ties manually with append and update queries. Does anyone know the actual problem or corruption that occurs during a connection failure? Is there a way to access the affected layer(s) and undo the corruption or remedy the affect so the records can be used? Is the problem with the SQL Data itself or on a layer with MS Access/MS DAP?

This data is very important and needs to be used today and was supposed to be used yesterday. If anyone could help me in this matter or provide a better way to undo the supposed corruption, it would be greatly appreciated :)!

thanks in advance,
mellamokb

PS - I don't know if this makes a difference, but other data has been changed in the same database/tables since the connection failure, so a complete reversion back to the system at that point in time would mean loss of other updated data.

New Oracle Data Provider For .NET (ODP .NET) 10.2.0.2.20 Failure.

Aug 3, 2006

Oracle recently released Oracle Data Provider for .NET (ODP .NET) 10.2.0.2.20. It happened on August 1, 2006. Oracle claims that its software is compliant with Microsoft ADO.NET 2.0 and €œ€¦more flexible, faster, and more stable€¦.€?. On top of it Oracle introduced many new features €œ€¦ not available from other .NET drivers€¦€?.

http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/windows/odpnet/index.html

I decided to give it a shot and try in SSIS.
I installed ODP.NET on my machine and it works just fine in PL/SQL Developer

Next, I opened Data Source Wizard in BIDS for SSIS project.
I see Oracle Data Provider for .NET option is enlisted under .NET Providers node on a tree. But when I select it, I am getting an error dialog:

Failed to find or load the registered .Net Framework Data Provider.

So what could be done in such scenario?

Login Failure For OLE DB Data Connection

Aug 13, 2007

Hello,

I have encountered a problem with my data source connection. I have a data souce that uses a SQL Login to access a remote server. When I test the connection in the Data Source Designer all works fine. Even when I add the data source as a new data connection in my SSIS package an use it in a OLE DB Source component it works fine, in the preview window.

But when I try to run the package in debug mode i get the following error message,

Data Conversion - NULL Datetime Causes Failure

Jul 9, 2007

Hi,

I have a flat file source and am bringing it into an OLE DB Destination connected to a SQL Server 2005 database. Since I am bringing in the data via a flat file, I have a conversion step in the data flow, which uses a "Data Conversion" transformation to convert each column to the appropriate destination data type.

When I run my SSIS package, if the datetime column in the flatfile is NULL, then the Data Conversion step fails. I have my Data COnversion step set to redirect error rows to an error output. So, I get all the rows with populated datetime values in the intended destination, and none of the rows with null datetime values (these go to the error destination.)

This is a problem! I need to make sure all valid rows fall through. It seems very odd to me that a NULL datetime could not be converted to a datetime data type. This makes no sense, since a datetime column can naturally hold NULL, just like any other type. So, my question is: is this a bug??? It seems to me it is. I can't believe this would be the desired behavior?!

Microsoft: please let us know whether this is expected behavior. If so, then what would the desired workaround be?

Thanks

SSIS Failure - Can Not Add A Row To The Data Flow Task Buffer

Apr 18, 2006

I have a relatively simple SSIS package that I'm building for a data mining process. The package starts with an OLE DB data source, passes the results of a SQL Command (query) along to a conversion step, which then gets sent to a Term Lookup task. The Term Lookup then writes the result to an OLE DB Data Destination. Pretty simple. The OLE DB data source query returns about 80,000 rows if you run it through SQL WB. The SSIS editor shows 9,557 rows make it out of the source, and into the conversion step, 9,557 make it out of the conversion and into the lookup, and about 60,000 rows make it out of the lookup and are written to the results table. Then the package fails with the following errors listed on the progress screen. I was assuming that the 9,557 was some type of batching that was occurring in the process, but now I'm not so sure.

Thoughts?

Microsoft Data Link Error - Connection Failure

Apr 21, 2008

Hi!

I've a computer with W2K SP4 installed. Previously SQL Express 2005 worked but according to the user it "just stopped working".

When selecting database on the server in the "Data Link Properties"-window he is given the following error message:

"Microsoft Data Link" "Login failed. Catalog information cannot be retrieved"
followed by
"Microsoft Data Link Error" "Connection failure"
Note: He is not given the error message "Server does not exist or access denied!"

- The SQL service is started (can be stopped and restarted without problem)
- I've re-installed SQL Express.
- I've checked and is certain the server name is correct (i.e. computernameSQLEXPRESS)

Any ideas here because I'm getting desperate?

Thanks in advance,

Package Failure - Multiple Synchronous Data Flows - File Name Not Valid – /3GB /PAE

Apr 23, 2008

I have a package with 10 synchronous dataflows, which, combined, load about 300MB of flat file data to a database. This package would run successfully on 2 of our database servers, but would regularly fail on a third. The server on which it was failing is a 4 processor box with 16GB Ram with Windows Server 2003, SQL 2005, SSIS and SSRS installed - much more robust than one of the others that the package worked on. The SSIS error messages returned alternated between the following (with no apparent reason why one would show up rather than another, though the first was the most common):

"The file name "\Server1Folder1File1.txt" specified in the connection was not valid."

"The file name property is not valid. The file name is a device or contains invalid characters."

"An error occurred while initializing the flat file parser."

For the first error message, the error would report different connection managers and their associated file as invalid from run to run. All of the files across the 10 dataflows resided in the same network folder, and the package would read in and process a few of them before failing, so the problem was definitely not the connection string.

Searching the forums, etc. for these errors provided no useful information - given the real cause of the problem, these error messages are worse than unhelpful, they send you looking in the wrong direction. It was only when trying to track down another problem on the same server that I discovered the issue. When trying to copy database backups greater than 12GB over the network to this server, the operation would fail with an "Insufficient System Resources" message.

Some research led to the discovery that problem was caused by the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file of the server (don't let your Server team use that switch if you have 16GB of memory or more). Removing the switch and setting SQL to utilize AWE, fixed both the file copy problem AND the SSIS package failure problem. The SSIS package failed, not due to a bad connection string, but rather to insufficient server resources (read memory) to handle the simultaneous connections.

I hope this may help any others trying to track down this kind of SSIS package failure.

I will also provide here what I have gleaned about setting up Memory usage for SQL Server 2005 running on 32 bit Windows Server 2003 (with the caveat that I am no expert €“ corrections and additional information are welcome).

The following links got me started in my research (thanks to the folks who provided such useful information):

http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-6091280.html

http://www.modhul.com/2007/11/10/optimising-system-memory-for-sql-server-part-i/

Also, search BOL for:
Server Memory Options
Enabling Memory Support for Over 4 GB of Physical Memory
Enabling AWE Memory for SQL Server

Windows Server 2003 provides access to 4GB of virtual address space. By default, 2GB is assigned to the OS and 2GB to applications. This default can be change to 1GB for the OS and 3GB for applications by the use of the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file.

Physical memory over 4GB can be addressed by enabling Physical Addressing Extensions (PAE), which is done by setting the /PAE switch in the boot.ini file. This does not increase the systems virtual address space, rather it increases the size of the page table (which is maintained within the virtual address space), adding entries to reference the physical memory above 4GB.

It is important to note that these two switches are not interdependent (they do different things and you can turn each on or off regardless of the others status), though the combination of them has an impact on server performance and the maximum amount of physical memory which can be addressed.

The /3GB switch only impacts the allocation of the first 4GB of memory (virtual address space) between the OS and applications (default 50/50 % split, with switch on - 25% OS and 75% applications). The /PAE switch enables the system to reference/manage physical memory above 4GB, but does not alter the allocation percentages of the first 4GB of memory between the OS and applications. However, when PAE is enabled, the OS requires more memory within the first 4GB to manage the physical memory above 4GB (due to increased page table entries). With the /3GB switch, the OS has only 1GB of virtual address space, and only enough space to manage a total of 16GB of physical memory. If 32GB of physical memory is installed, 16GB of it will go to waste.

Address Windowing Extensions (AWE) is an API that allows an application to address more than the 2-3GB of memory that is available to applications within the virtual address space (first 4GB of memory). SQL Server can utilize AWE to take advantage of memory above the first 4GB that is made available via PAE, and can even reserve portions for its own use. I believe (though I can€™t remember where I got this bit) that SQL utilizes AWE memory only for the page cache (buffer pool €“ which seems to be a misnomer), and not for other operations.

To enable AWE, see the BOL references above.

The big question: what are the recommended settings for all of these? That all depends on what you have running on the server. You need to leave space for the OS, SQL Server and any other applications you have.

The hard and fast rules:
If you have more than 4GB of RAM, you must use the /PAE switch in order to take advantage of it.
If you have more than 16GB of RAM, you must NOT use the /3GB switch in order to take advantage of it.

Based on anecdotal evidence, I€™ve noticed the following generally recommended guidelines €“ assuming the server is dedicated to SQL.

Use of the /3GB switch seems to be a generally accepted practice if you have 8GB of RAM or less. For between 8 and 16GB, some say never use the /3GB switch, others say you can use it up to 12GB and still others up to 16GB. I interpret this to mean that it all depends on what types of loads are being placed on the server and that testing on individual servers will be required to determine whether or not to use the switch. Certainly that was my experience - the /3GB switch worked fine with 16GB RAM, until the server encountered a certain workload. For me, no more /3GB switch.

For setting SQL to use AWE, most seem to agree that it should be enabled if you have more than 4GB RAM. The setting of max server memory is more complicated. BOL seems to suggest (the €˜Server Memory Options€™ entry) a formula of Total Physical Memory minus 1-2GB for the operating system. Based on a desire to be a bit more conservative, I am now using the following formula:

max server memory = total physical memory

minus

4GB for the OS and application processes (since the AWE memory is utilized for page cache, not SQL processes)

minus

AWE memory required by other applications, including other instance of SQL Server

If anyone has additional insight, or a more refined equation, I could certainly benefit from it.

Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed."I can understand that it has something to do with user right but more than that I am pretty lost. Can anyone translate this error for me and give me some tips on what do to.I checked first the user running the sql express service and saw it was the NETWORK SERVICE user. I changed it to be the local system account but that did not make any difference. The application is running just fine on my local computer(Win XP sp2). Is there anyway of running a Store Procedure in Database A that's going against database B? I have a store procedure that does a select on table A in database A and a select on table B in database B.

The problem is that the user have exec rights to the store procedure, which is an object in database A. The store procedure won't run because of permission rights to table B in database B.

Is there anyway of queryiny table B without giving the user select rights to that table? Anyone out there had the same problem?

thank you

Joe R.

Distributed Transactions

May 24, 2001

Hi to everyone!
Any experience handling a Store Procedure that has distribution transactions?
Here is a story.

We have a store procedure #1 that inserts or updates data in two tables A and B on SQL Server 7.0 then it calls another store procedure #2 that:
1. updates C table in the same database on SQL Server from Oracle Server
2. deletes that record on Oracle Server
3. inserts a record on Oracle from table A
4. inserts the same record into table D on SQL Server from Oracle Server.

People who wrote store procedure #1 put Commit Tran before executing #2.
The questions are:
1. Is it correct that we don't have Commit Tran for #2?
2. What do you think about Nested Begin - Commit Tran?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Distributed Queries

Oct 3, 2001

I have a ODBC data source setup for the AS400DB2 which is AS400JDE

The linked server has been created and all the tables are visible within enterprise manager.

If I had a table F0101, datasource = AS400JDE and linked server of AS400

How would I query it.

I gave tried AS400.AS400JDE.DBO.F0101, but i get the following error message.
OLE DB provider 'MSDASQL' does not contain table '"as400jde"."dbo"."f0101"'.

Distributed Queries

Jan 20, 2000

i added a linked sql 7 production server to my sql 7 development server so i could perform some data comparisons between the two
servers. after i linked in the server, i was able to see all the icons for the various tables in the production server. i went to query
analyzer and executed the following openquery:

select * from openquery(itdev_s08, 'select * from dbo.tablename')

it returned all the rows in the table. however, i want to comapre several different values so i needed a better way to query.
i then decided to try the distrbuted query below:

select * from linkedserver.dbname.dbo.tablename

however instead of a result set i got the error message below:

Server: Msg 7314, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' does not contain table '"dbname"."dbo"."tablename"'.

i went to BOL and it told me the only reason i would get this error is if the object did not exist or if i did not have permission
to use it. however, i know the object exists and i have the appropriate permission becuase i can obtain a result set from the
first query in the same query analyzer window. is my syntax incorrect? what am i doing wrong?

thanks!

Distributed Transactions

Aug 3, 1998

Does SQL Server actually support distributed transactions over, say, two tables in different databases but that reside on the same server? When I try to execute such a transaction in which one part of the transaction violates referential integrity and hence should not be executed, causing the rest of the transaction to, supposedly, rollback, the transaction does not roll back but instead produces an error message and executes the second, valid half of the transaction anyway.
Any help or suggestions gratefully accepted.

My MSDTC is on. I had setup linked server using OLEDB.

Microsoft did'nt give enough info or solution for this. ANybody faced this prob and solved it?

Distributed Query

Apr 17, 2001

I have a procedure where it runs a procedure on another server and returns the results to the calling procedure and dumps it into a temp table..

I get the following message:
-----
Server: Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Procedure proc1, Line 60
The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' does not support distributed transactions.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: Distributed transaction error]
----

But both the servers are running the distributed transaction corordinator

example:

create procedure dbo.proc1
@param1 int
as

create table #temp
(col1 int
col2 varchar(255)
)

insert into #temp
EXEC server.database.dbo.proc2 @param1 = @param1

Hi all,
I am trying to merge data of 2 tables on different servers with an insert statement.

INSERT INTO SERVER1.db.owner.table

LEFT JOIN SERVER1.db.owner.table as s1

where s1.key is null

I got this error.
The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: New transaction cannot enlist in the specified transaction coordinator. ]
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'SQLOLEDB' ITransactionJoin::JoinTransaction returned 0x8004d00a].

while the select query is giving the result.
I have done simmilar inserts on some other tables which worked fine

Distributed Sp Problem 32 && 64 Bit.

Oct 19, 2006

Hey,
I have a Sql 2000 w/ SP4 on Server 2003 running an sp that inserts and updates to a 2005 64 bit DB w SP 1 on Server 2003. The SP has worked forever. No code or server changes. Now all of the sudden I randomly get this error. It will work, then fail 2Xs, then work, then fail. Very bazaar.
Any help is appreciated! I have done the MSDTS, ran catalog sps, forced TCP/IP. I'm lost.

If I run the sp on the 64bit box it works fine, but on the 32bit box now, I get the frequent error below.

[OLE/DB provider returned message: Unspecified error]
Msg 8525, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_xxx_xxx_xxx, Line 1496
Distributed transaction completed. Either enlist this session in a new transaction or the NULL transaction.

The line number in the error will change as well and is not always consistent.

Thank you!!!!

Distributed Databases?

Jun 27, 2007

Hi everybody.

I have a question about the database performance.

Suppose we have 15 tables distributed to 3 databases. So if we want to to load some related data from diffrent tables of diffrent databases, we have to make more connections to the other databases, and it takes some time to establish the connection. but if we use 1 database with 15 tables, then we wont have this problem and we wont make more connections. but using 1 database, will grow the size of database file (*.mdf) and sure this couses to take more time of file operation like record-seek-time, record-insertion-time and etc.

which of these solutions have better performance? Distributed databases or single one?

Thanks
