Any Compatibility Issues Between SQL 2005 Express And SQL 2005 Server

Apr 1, 2006

Hi All,

The IP company that host my site is installing SQL 2005 soon and I my building a web application with SQL 2005 Express. So the question is has anyone heard of any problems with uploading an 2005 express onto a sql 2005 server? I would like to find out now before I finish all of the work. Don't want to find out later that you can't run a sql 2005 express database on a sql 2005 server.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

SQL Express 2005 SP2 Compatibility

Apr 3, 2007

I am attempting to install SQL Express 2005 SP2 on a Windows 2000 Server computer. Can someone tell me if this version of SQL is compatible with this operating system? I am getting a warning that my system does not meet the minimum hardware requirements when attempting the install.

I have 512bm of memory (minimum requirement is 192), a PIII/866mhz processor (minimum requirement is a PIII/600mhz) and plenty od disk space. So is it the operating system that is causing this warning?

I also have the Windows Installer 3.1 as well as the Dot Net Framework 2.0 installed.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help - Steve

How To Apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 To The Version Of SQL Server 2005 Express Which Installs With Visual Studio 2005?

Aug 8, 2006

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.

How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?

Currently, if I run this query:

SELECT @@version

I get the following:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)

After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.

Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/

Thank you,

Bashman

SQL Server 2005 And RDO Compatibility

Jun 12, 2006

Are there any known issues with using RDO with SQL Server 2005?

My company is in the process of updating our SQL Server 7 database to
SQL Server 2005. Most of our applications are several years old and
written using RDO to access the database. I have since started the
daunting task of updating all the applications to ADO, but it's only
about a quarter of the way done. We need to update the database ASAP,
but we cannot wait until all the applications have been updated to ADO.

While testing the applications (written in VB6) against the new SQL
Server 2005 database, I have come across a problem with the RDO queries
not returning the correct data. The query returns 4 records. In the
SQL7, it properly shows 4 for RowCount and 4 records are present in the
recordset (as seen by looping through the recordset using rs.MoveNext).
In SQL2005, it properly shows 4 for RowCount, but looping through the
recordset shows that the recordset only contains 1 record. The problem
seems to be linked to a Left Join in the Query. (see below) Table1 has
a column that has a RecID for Table2. In the case where the Table2RecID
column in Table1 is 0, the row is just not added to the recordset even
though it increments the RowCount.

Code:

SELECT * FROM Table1 As T1
LEFT JOIN Table2 As T2 On T1.Table2RecID = T2.RecID

I converted the query to ADO and it ran fine with no problems. The issue has something to do with SQL Server 2005 and RDO.

Edited Data Won't Propagate Back To The Database (VB 2005 Express && SQL Server 2005 Express)

Dec 11, 2006

Hi,

I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.

When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the

Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)

I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.

I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.

Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.

Thanks,
Ieyasu

Trace Flags Compatibility In SQL Server 2005

Sep 11, 2007

We have the following trace flags present in startup in SQL server 2000:

809
1204
3605
3913

Need to understand if these should be required in SQL Server 2005 + SP2 version. I have run the upgrade advisor tool which indcates that the behaviour of some flags has changed and some other TFs are no longer applicable. Hence, I want to know about the above mentioned TFs.

Database Compatibility Between Sql 2005 Standard V/s Sql 2005 64 Bit

Jul 24, 2006

I am a newbie developing a web site. My local machine has sql 2005 standard edition on it. The host that I am trying to use only has sql 2005 64 bit version.

would I be able to do the use the same database between the two ( i.e. once my site is running at host, would I be able to download the database on my local machine, make changes to my site and then upload again on the hose without any glitches?). In addition, how about sql express doing the same with sql 2005 64 bit.

Thanks a lot for taking time to read the post.

Features Not Supported In Compatibility Level 80 Of SQL Server 2005

Oct 23, 2007

Hello All,
I am in the process of upgrading my current database in SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. I have finished my analysis using the upgrade advisor and have found a lot of SPs having upgrade related issues. From what I estimate I think it will take around 3-4 weeks to resolve all of those issues. I wanted a quicker way to upgrade my database since we have very little time for the final release. The main reason for upgrade to 2005 was use of new features like Database Mirroring and/or peer to peer replication alongwith the Partitioning features and the new T-SQL enhancements.

The question I wanted to ask was does the compatibility level 80 of SQL Server 2005 supports these new features.
From what I have read on the KB article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822400 is that mirroring is supported in any compatibility level, but there is no specific mention on the peer to peer thing.
Also when I personally tried using the New Partitioning Features of 2005 on the database having compatibility 80, it worked fine. Also other features like SQLCLR and TRY...CATCH works fine.
One thing I observed was that new T-SQL statements like PIVOT/UNPIVOT is not supported

It will be nice if someone can give out the entire list of features that will be supported in the compatibility Level 80 and also the list of the ones that are not supported.

Thanks in Advance,
Mitesh

SQL 2005 Server (SP2) To SQL 2005 Express (SP2) Replication Looping/Excessive Repl Times

Sep 25, 2007

We have a large number of clients attempting to replicate two publications on 2005 Express databases (2 publications subscribed to the one subscriber database) with our 2005 Server (9.00.3042.00 SP2 Standard Edition) and experiencing two significant problems:

1) Users experience the following message:

The Merge Agent failed after detecting that retention-based metadata cleanup has deleted metadata at the Subscriber for changes not yet sent to the Publisher. You must reinitialize the subscription (without upload).

This problem should not apparently occur with SQL Server 2005 (or 2005 Express) instances with SP2 applied. All clients experiencing this problem have SP2 installed as does our Server and the retention period is 30 days. The subscribers have been replicating well under that.

2) Replications never succeed after appearing to replicate/loop around for hours

This issue is the most critical as we have clients who have been installed and re-installed with new instances of SQL Server 2005 Express, new empty databases (on subscriber before snapshot extraction), and using fresh snapshots (less than an few hours old) which cannot successfully replicate.

Interestingly there is at least 1 instance where several computers are subscribed and successfully replicating the same database as another where replication refuses to succeed.

To test we have taken a republished database from another 2005 Server which is working fine and restored it to the same server as the one holding the database with which we are experiencing problems and subscribed to it. This test worked fine and replication of both publications went through fast and repeatedly without showing any signs of problem.

This indicates that the problem is perhaps data related as it appears localised to that database.

Below are two screenshots which may assist.

Screenshot 1 Shows that on the server side the replication attempts look like they are succeeding despite the fact that the subscriber end does not indicate success. Also the history indicates the the subscription has spent all it's time initialising and not merging any changes.

Screenshot 2 Shows a rogue process which has appears on many of the problem child subscribers. It shows a process running with no end time even though the job indicates failure in the message and even though other replication attempts appear to have succeeded after it. This process stays in the history showing that it is running even when I can find no corresponding process for it.

Can anyone suggest a further course of action/further testing/further information required which may assist?

This is extremely urgent and any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Scott

Visual Studio 2005 Unable To Connect To SQL Server Express 2005

May 26, 2008

Hi,
I have VS Pro 2005 and SQL Server Express 2005 installed on an XP Pro machine. When using VS 2005, in the 'Server Explorer' window I can see and attach to two SQL Server databases that I have set-up. But if I attempt to access the same databases from withn the 'Solution Explorer' window I get the following dialog box message,

"
Required Component Missing (Dialog box heading)

Connections to SQL Server Files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express to function properly. Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=49251
"

I have uninstalled and then reinstalled both VS 2005 and SQL Server Express twice but it has helped.

I don't understand why I'm getting this error because all of the server configuration tools and connection utilities seem to work fine but VS say's that SQL Server Express is not installed.

Thanks,

CLN

P.S.
I had another application that required MSDE 2000A to be installed. When I removed the other application I also removed MSDE 2000A and that's when the problem began.

Upgrade From SQL Express 2005 Report Server With Advanced Services To SQL 2005 Standard Fails

Feb 25, 2008

I am trying to upgrade SQL Server Express 2005 Report Server to SQL 2005 Standard and it fails with the following error:

SQL Server Setup did not have the administrator permissions required to copy a file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting ServicesReportServer
ssrvpolicy.config. To continue, verify that the file exists, and either grant administrator permissions to the account currently running Setup or log in with an administrator account. Then run SQL Server Setup again.

After I click OK on the message, this whole path where the upgrade is bieng installed dissapears C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting Services. The error is a bit missleading because the file that it is trying to copy rssrvpolicy.config does appear in that upgrade folder so I am not sure why it would try to copy a file that has already been copied.

I was able to upgrade the Database Engine instance fine but can't upgrade Reporting Services due to that error. I have verified that the account that ran the setup had the administrator permissions. Your prompt reply to my question would be greatly appreciatted.

SQL Server 2005 Express And Visual Studio 2005 Standard

Jul 9, 2006

Hi everyone,I am trying to connect to SQL Server 2005 Express with Advanced Services from Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition.  I have SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition but it took up so much space and resources on my computer that I didn't want to put it back on there.  So I put the SQL Express on there and while the Management Studio application connects just fine, VS 2005 will not.  Oddly enough, VS 2005 connected just fine to SQL 2005 Standard.  I have enabled shared memory, named pipes and TCP/IP.  I have set up SQL Express to accept remote connections on named pipes and TCP/IP.  And I have tried running SQL Express as the Local System Account, as a Local Service and as a Network Service.  Nothing.  I have tried feeding the Server Name is the Data Connections dialog in Visual Studio my SQL Express instance as (local)/SQLEXPRESS, localhost/SQLEXPRESS, and {computername}/SQLEXPRESS where {computername} is the name of my local computer which SQL Express is (allegedly) running on.  And I cannot get the list of databases on that server. There is probably something very simple that I have left out.  Can anyone see what it is?Thanks!

I can connect to SQL Server 2005 using SQL Server Management Studio. However, Visual C# is a different story. When I try to add a new Data Connection, it defaults the data source to .SQLEXPRESS, which is no longer on my machine. I can select .MSSQLSERVER, but when I click on either OK or Test Connection, I time out with an error message -- error 25 - Connection string is not valid. The connection string that is shown at the bottom of the Advanced dialog box is -- Data Source=.MSSQLSERVER;AttachDbFilename=E:InventoryDataInventory_Data.MDF;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition 2005 - Update Fails

Mar 26, 2008

HI, My computer keeps trying to download SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 and fails with the error code 0x2B22. It is a new computer running with Windows XP Pro.

I have spent hours searching the forums and the internet, but I can't find anything to help, or I don't understand the solutions or whether they relate to my computer. I don't know how to find out why the update is failing either.

Please can someone help!!

Thank you!

Nebie Connection Problems With SQL Server 2005 Express And VS 2005

May 10, 2007

I downloaded SQL Server 2005 Express and some sample databases (incl. Adventureworks_data.mdf), but when I try to Add Connection in VS 2005 to point to this db and use the Test Connection button, it gives the error:

---------------------------
Microsoft Visual Studio
---------------------------
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
---------------------------

I've tried setting the data source as either "Microsoft SQL Server Database File" or "Microsoft SQL Server", but get the same error.

Any tips on verifying SQL Srv Express is installed correctly? Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.
